FBI: Over $140 million handed over to ransomware attackers

By analyzing bitcoin wallets and ransom notes, the FBI has determined that cybercrime victims paid over $140m to ransomware operators over the past six years.

At this year's RSA security conference, FBI Special Agent Joel DeCapua presented in his findings during two sessions in which he explained how he was able to use bitcoin wallets and ransom notes collected by the FBI, shared by private partners or found on VirusTotal to figure out how much victims paid in ransom payments.

According to DeCapua, between October 2013 and November 2019, approximately $144,350,000 was paid in bitcoins to ransomware actors. However, this figure does not include operation costs related to these attacks but just the ransom payments that were made.

When it came to the most profitable ransomware families, Ryuk brought in the most money for ransomware operators at $61.26m followed by Crysis/Dharma at $24.48m and Bitpaymer at $8.04m. It's worth noting that the actual amount of payments made over these six years is likely much higher as the FBI does not have access to all of the data surrounding ransomware attacks, as many businesses keep them secret to prevent hurting their stock prices.

Defending against ransomware

During his sessions at RSA, DeCapua also provided some tips on how companies and individuals can avoid falling victim to ransomware attacks.

DeCapua revealed that the Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is the most common method that ransomware attackers are able to gain access to a network before deploying ransomware. In fact, RDP accounts for 70-80 percent of network breaches which is why he recommends that organizations use Network Level Authentication (NLA) for additional protection.

With NLA, clients are required to authenticate themselves with the network before they can actually connect to the remote desktop server. This provides increased security against preauthentication exploits though, DeCapua also suggested that unique and complex passwords should be used for RDP accounts.

Additionally, DeCapua suggests that businesses and individuals be careful of phishing attacks, install software and operating system updates, use complex passwords, monitor their networks and have a contingency plan with backups to prevent falling victim to a ransomware attack.

Huawei considered a Samsung Z Flip shape, but wanted ‘more smartphone’

During the Huawei Mate Xs reveal in lieu of an MWC 2020 debut, a Huawei executive spoke to TrustedReviews and noted that the Chinese tech company had, indeed, thought about making its own Samsung Z Flip-style clamshell foldable. But Huawei rejected it for not providing more display real estate, it seems.

“If you open it up and there [isn’t] more smartphone, why … do [a] foldable?” Huawei UK MD Anson Zhang told TrustedReviews. “You do the foldable in order to enhance the user experience. Why do people [want] a foldable? … They want a device with a bigger screen but pocketable – that is the reason behind [it].”

The company instead opted for a foldable phone design that would unfold into a larger display to give users a better experience, which became the Huawei Mate X series. “You do foldable in order to have better views – reading, video, even multi-task as Richard [Yu] showed,” Zhang said, referring to Huawei’s CEO, who debuted the Mate Xs on stage at the event.

The Z Flip unfolds to a 6.7-inch FHD+ (2,636x1,080) display that’s rather narrow, with a 21.9:9 ratio. While the Huawei Mate Xs is a bit shorter, it’s more than twice as wide, with an 8-inch (2,480x2,200) display.

Not just a shape - what about the Z Flip glass?

Turns out Huawei had explored foldable glass like that seen in the Z Flip, too:

“At the beginning, we have also another solution similar to the glass fold. That way it’s more, let’s say, secured … when you see that one, there’s a gap … at the edge. That is a more simple way to do the hardware design,” Zhang said.

Flexibility has been a key issue in foldable displays, which is why the first generation opted for plastic displays, which bend but are nowhere near as durable as glass, often getting scored by simple fingernail pressure.

But even the ultra-thin glass used in the Z Flip might be suspect. Teardowns like those by JerryRigEverything reveal the device’s display gets scratched up just as easily as plastic displays.

Coronavirus could lead to a decline in PC sales this year, according to IDC report

Anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock for the past two months is well aware of the impact the novel deadly coronavirus has had on everything, including the computing world.

Entire factories in China have already been forced to shut down, halting production of not just tech products, but also parts and components needed for those items. Companies like Apple have been closing retail stores due to the outbreak. And, tech trade shows and events are either getting cancelled or seeing exhibitors drop out at the last minute.

That’s not the end of it, however. As Tom’s Hardware reports, IDC’s latest forecasts predict that the COVID-19 outbreak may actually hurt the first half of 2020.

IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, which covers everything from desktops and workstations to laptops and tablets, shows a considerable decline in PC shipments. That’s not just in the first quarter, but for the rest of 2020 as well, especially H1.

IDC predicts even bigger shipment decline

These forecasts show 6.4% and 10.3% drops in shipments of traditional PCs year-over-year in Q1 2020 and Q2 2020 respectively, as well as a 11.8% and 17.5% decline in shipments of tablets.

Considering IDC’s November 2019 forecasts for the same quarters, which only predicted a 6.8% and 10.7% fall for Q2 2020 for traditional PCs and tablets respectively, there’s a massive difference. Though it’s also worth noting that there are other smaller factors at play, including Windows 7’s end of life.

IDC forecast

There have already been reports of a significant drop in demand due to consumers avoiding public places. But, IDC is also expecting depleted inventory in the second quarter from Q1’s production halt.

As Linn Huang, research VP, Devices & Displays, IDC, said in a statement, "the existing inventory of components and finished goods from the first quarter will have been depleted by the second quarter.

Many critical components, such as panels, touch sensors and printed circuit boards, come out of these impacted regions, which will cause a supply crunch heading into Q2."

And, there’s still a long road ahead even after the factories reopen. "We have already forgone nearly a month of production given the two-week extension to the Lunar New Year break,” says Huang. “And, we expect the road to recovery for China's supply chain to be long with a slow trickle of labor back to factories in impacted provinces until May when the weather improves."

Facebook sues analytics firm over alleged data harvesting

Facebook has filed a federal lawsuit in California against the New Jersey-based data analytics firm OneAudience claiming it allegedly harvested data from the social network.

The social networking giant claims that the firm paid app developers to install its Software Development Kit (SDK) in their apps which was used to collect data on Facebook users without their knowledge.

According to court documents obtained by ZDNet, the SDK was embedded in a wide variety of apps and some were even made available through the official Google Play Store. In its complaint, Facebook provided more details on the kind of information OneAudience allegedly harvested, saying:

"After a user installed one of these apps on their device, the malicious SDK enabled OneAudience to collect information about the user from their device and their Facebook, Google, or Twitter accounts, in instances where the user logged into the app using those accounts. With respect to Facebook, OneAudience used the malicious SDK – without authorization from Facebook – to access and obtain a user's name, email address, locale (i.e. the country that the user logged in from), time zone, Facebook ID, and, in limited instances, gender."

Data harvesting

Twitter was the first to discover that OneAudience was secretly harvesting data in November of last year and in a blog post, the social network confirmed that the company was also targeting Facebook, Apple and Google users.

Facebook's lawsuit against the company comes after its investigation into the matter has been closed. The company also revealed to ZDNet that it first learned about the suspicious behavior of the OneAudience SDK from a bug report submitted to its Data Abuse Bounty program which it created after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

In response to the accusations that its SDK was harvesting user data, OneAudience published a statement on its website claiming that the company never intended to collect any user data at all, which reads:

“Recently, we were advised that personal information from hundreds of mobile IDs may have been passed to our oneAudience platform. This data was never intended to be collected, never added to our database and never used. We proactively updated our SDK to make sure that this information could not be collected on November 13, 2019. We then pushed the new version of the SDK to our developer partners and required that they update to this new version. We believe that consumers should have the opportunity to choose who they share their data with and in what context. Today, we are shutting down the OneAudience SDK.”

Facebook responded to OneAudience's behavior by sending the company a cease and desist letter and it also requested that the firm participate in an audit. However, OneAudience refused to cooperate according to Facebook and now the social network is asking a judge to order the data analytics firm to comply with its audit request.

Intel is adopting one of AMD and Nvidia’s most useful features in its latest graphics software

Intel released its Graphics Command Center way back in March 2019, but it obviously wasn't finished. Instead, Intel has updated it with one of the most useful features that both Nvidia GeForce Experience and AMD Adrenalin offer: gameplay recording.

Intel has announced that video recording and broadcasting will be coming to IGCC (Intel Graphics Command Center) through a Twitter post, bringing its gaming-focused UI more in line with what's offered by competitors AMD and Nvidia, notably before Intel Xe. And, luckily if you want to try it out yourself, you can download the beta version of the software through the Microsoft Store

While it doesn't look quite as robust as what you can do with Nvidia Shadowplay, which allows you to assign a hotkey through GeForce Experience to record the last 15 minutes or so of gameplay, it will at least allow you to actually record gameplay. However, because right now Intel graphics are limited to integrated GPUs, performance will likely take a dive – but this is about the future – the far future if rumors are to be believed.

That's right, it looks like Intel wants to make sure its software game is up to snuff when Intel Xe graphics cards eventually make it to market. That will likely be a while, since the Intel Xe DG1 GPU we played with at CES 2020 is still in its early stages, and will likely not be in the hands of consumers for quite a while.

However long we have to wait for Intel's graphics cards in the mainstream, we hope to see many more software features like this make their way into its software. Who knows, maybe by the time we actually get our hands on an Intel Xe graphics card, Intel Graphics Command Center will be as fully featured as Nvidia GeForce Experience or AMD Adrenalin.

Intel is coming for AMD hard, if this latest performance leak is any indication

Intel's 10th-generation Comet Lake-S processors for desktop still aren't here, and while we haven't heard anything from Intel itself, there's a deluge of performance leaks out there.

The latest of which comes via famed hardware leaker @TUM_APISAK and shows a supposed Intel Core i7-10700KF scoring 294.33GOPS on the SISoftware CPU Arithmetic benchmark. For comparison's sake, an AMD Ryzen 7 3800X can score around 308GOPs according to SiSMark's results browser

This would mean that Intel's next generation processors won't quite catch up to AMD's mainstream platform, but because Comet Lake-S is, by all indications, going to still be on the 14nm manufacturing process, that shouldn't be too much of a surprise. In fact, its promising that Intel is able to come so close on its aging manufacturing process at all.

This is likely largely due to the processor boosting all the way up to 5.3GHz, which is an amazing boost clock for any processor, especially when it comes with 8-cores and 16-threads. Only time will tell if this is an actual boost clock and not an overclock – if this benchmark result is even real. However, it's still promising.

We are fully expecting Intel to unveil its Comet Lake-S processors any time now, and these chips will show us whether or not there really is any life left in the Skylake architecture. We'll just have to wait and see.

Wait, there's a catch

According to some juicy speculation by our friends over at Tom's Hardware, Intel may end up launching its 10th-generation Comet Lake-S chips with three different levels of TDP (thermal design power): 125W, 65W and 35W.

It's extremely likely that the Intel Core i7-10700KF shown off in this benchmark is going to come with the 125W TDP rather than a 65W, which would be significantly higher than the 105W TDP of the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X.

You also have to take into consideration the fact that TDP is measured differently by Intel and AMD. Here at TechRadar, we didn't review the 3800X, but we reviewed a large portion of the AMD Ryzen 3rd Generation lineup, and the Ryzen 9 3900X stays closer to its 105W TDP with a peak power draw of 145.75W than something like the Intel Core i9-9900KS which is rated for 127W but draws up to 202.75W.

It's likely then, that if the Intel Core i7-10700KF ships with a 125W TDP, it could see power consumption spike much higher than the Ryzen 7 3800X, which would make it both slightly slower and much less efficient.

Still, this loss in power efficiency may not be a dealbreaker for some users, especially if Intel manages to keep its lead in single core – and thus gaming – performance with its next-generation CPUs. The benchmark leaked here is definitely geared more towards multi-core performance, so its possible that Intel could still maintain its lead elsewhere.

We'll have to wait until we manage to get our hands on these processors ourselves, of course, but until then we'll report on any other major benchmark leaks leading up to the release of Comet Lake-S. We can't wait.

AMD solves some huge problems with its latest Radeon drivers

AMD is making big strides with its hardware, as CPU sales have dominated and even its GPUs marketshare has grown, with AMD even beating Nvidia for market share in Q4 2019. But, that increased prevalance put some of AMD's Radeon graphics cards' bugs in front of more users. Now, AMD has released updated drivers to address the biggest problems.

A number of stuttering and black screen bugs are covered by the Radeon Software Adrenalin 20202 Edition 20.2.2 update. These black screen bugs would be an especially big issue on computers running an AMD CPU, as it would more than likely not have an iGPU to help users troubleshoot.

Task switching with certain features on or applications running hardware acceleration could cause black screens. Launching games and programs could also cause a black screen if Instant Replay was enabled, as could toggling on HDR in Battlefield V, specifically. Playing Battlefield V for too long could also cause graphics cards to hang.

Problems extended to other games as well, such as Grand Theft Auto V, Monster Hunter World, and Metro Exodus. And the cause of the issues could come down to having an app with an on-screen overlay or even just choosing a particular dialogue option. Outside of gaming, even Chrome could suffer from the black screens, or partial black outs, when using hardware acceleration.

Even users who performed a factory reset on their computer to address the problems may have run into another issue where Instant Replay could not be enabled if it had been enabled prior to the reset.

Not quite done yet

All the bugs we've mentioned are fairly common and thankfully are addressed by the 20.2.2 update to AMD's drivers. The update also addresses graphics card fan speeds lagging behind changes in CPU temperature.

But all of the problems users have experienced aren't guaranteed to be fixed, as AMD notes, “Although Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.2.2 resolves many black screen issues, AMD is aware that some users may still experience black screen or system hang issues during extended periods of gameplay,”

In certain situations Enhanced Sync may still lead to black screens. Some games and video capture software may also run into stuttering still. Even Doom, the perfect test case for Radeon to show its chops running the Vulkan API, is still susceptible to random hangs and crashes during gameplay.

Hopefully, AMD can get a handle on all of these issues, especially the overarching issue related to simply playing for too long. If AMD tackles all that in time of the anticipated “Nvidia killer” Radeon RX 5950 XT, it could be a smash hit.
