Google Voice finally makes MMS support a priority

Regular users of Google Voice won’t hesitate to tell you that the service is ten kinds of awesome, letting them juggle multiple devices while only distributing a single phone number to friends, family, and business contacts. If you’re using it for calls or text messages, everything tends to work just fine, but when we start bringing pictures into the mix, a lot of users hit a brick wall. Problem is, Voice support for MMS has been extremely limited, and while

Google Voice begins integration with Hangouts

It’s been a long time coming: slowly but surely, Google’s been pushing existing messaging services into Hangouts. Already we’ve seen Hangouts become the new destination for text messaging on our phones, and rumors extending back into last year suggested that the next to make the transition to Hangouts would be Google Voice. Evidence has popped-up time and time again to that effect, and this week ...

Google Voice coming to Hangouts: the good, the bad, the ugly

I’ve used Google Voice since the days when it was Grand Central. It’s an amazing product and one that I don’t know what I’d do without. For those of you who don’t know, Google Voice is an interesting combination of telephone services. First, and foremost, Google Voice is to voicemail what Gmail is to email. When someone calls you, if you don’t answer (or if you have a rule set up) they go to voicemail. After they leave a message it’s transcribed (sometimes with ridiculous results). From there you can peek at what the message was (or what Google ...

Hangouts integration with Google Voice is nearly complete, suggests debug tool

With Google+ Hangouts came the promise of integration with Google Voice down the road — it was supposed to be Google’s unified chat client for all of its communication services. Today, as one member of the internet discovered, this merger looks to be one step closer to completion, as a screen within the app showed off Hangouts Google Voice integration setup. The screenshot was made possible because of a debug menu. This debug menu ...

Google Voice may soon be absorbed into Hangouts

It’s been clear for a while now that big changes are coming to Google Voice. We’ve complained in the past about how the feature set seemed a bit frozen, like Google had given up on making improvements to the existing service. But if Voice as we knew it was dying, what would it become? Much of the focus has looked to bundling Voice up within Hangouts; we saw phone calls ...

Hangouts, other Google services down (no, it’s not just you)

Come back from lunch to find that you’re unable to touch base with all your friends on Google Hangouts? You’re not alone. A disruption is currently affecting a number of Google services, and Google has confirmed that an investigation is underway. Google’s own status page for its various apps and services shows reported disruptions for Talk and Hangouts, which is probably how most of you are noticing this outage, but that’s not the extent of it. Google also mentions issues affecting Sheets, and while it doesn’t ...

The current state of Google Voice

Google Voice is a service that started life under the name “GrandCentral” back in 2005. It was purchased by Google in 2007 and would later become what we now know as Google Voice in 2009. For those who may not know, GrandCentral was introduced to solve a singular problem that was becoming more relevant in the technological age: how to call someone. I know, it sounds silly, right? Just just pick up the phone and dial. Ah yes, but what number do you call? During the day, you’ll be able to reach me at my desk job — unless I’m at lunch or in a meeting. Around 6pm ...

Google Voice SMS coming to Hangouts “early next year”

If you’ve found yourself frustrated by all the disparate messaging apps you need to keep up with on your Android phone, yesterday’s Android 4.4 launch probably came as great news to you, integrating text messages sent through your wireless carrier with your chats in Google’s Hangouts app. For others, though, it didn’t go quite far enough, and users of Google Voice were left a little let-down, with Voice SMS not getting the same Hangouts support. Why ...

Google Hangouts for iOS a step closer to replacing Google Voice

There’s no secret that Google plans to consolidate as much of their projects as they can. Some of us find Google Hangouts to be more of a convoluted solution than anything, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not better to have everything in one place, than to be jumping around apps for services that are similar to each other. As a result the company has now updated their iOS app, and the changes are quite significant. You can now make phone calls directly from the app to USA & Canada numbers at no charge, and Internationally for a fee. The service actually makes your ...

Google Voice was supposed to be the future – so why is it stuck in the past?

In the summer of 2007, I had a problem – and the problem was too many phones. As I revealed in a collaborative piece last week, I’ve always been a two-device kinda guy. That peculiar habit started well before that blistering summer season six years ago, but it was only then that the problems that came along with it became truly unbearable. The number-one issue I encountered with carrying too many phones was, perhaps predictably, too many phone numbers. To be sure I was consistently ...

The future of voice communication: VoIP, cellular, or Skype?

The introduction of a consumer-centric smartphone greatly changed the landscape of mobile communication. Prior to the smartphone, voice calling was still largely the primary form of communication, the quickest and easiest way to get in touch or stay in touch while on the go. Of course, the introduction of SMS (simple message service), which allowed cell phone users to send 160 character messages back and forth, changed that. And email-enabled BlackBerrys and PDAs also changed the course for mobile communication once again. But the eventual introduction of the modern smartphone is what ...
