Sony Cyber-shot QX10 & Q100 lens-style cameras hands-on (Video)

Coming up to the IFA this year, we had a long list of devices we were looking forward to seeing, but there were only two big mysteries: the Galaxy Gear’s hardware, and these crazy-looking lens-cameras from Sony. Well, we got the answers we wanted about both earlier this week, and while the Galaxy Gear is simple enough to understand, these Sony cameras are just so outside what we’re used to that it was still a trick to wrap our heads around what it would be ...

Sony Xperia Z1 vs. HTC One (Video)

We just got done showing you how Sony’s new Android smartphone, the Xperia Z1 with its 20.7-megapixel camera, held up against Samsung’s 2013 juggernaut, the Galaxy S 4. The GS4 might be a huge commercial success, but when it came to picking a favorite phone from the first half of the year, plenty of us here were leaning towards a preference for the

Sony Xperia Z1 vs. Samsung Galaxy S 4 (Video)

The big 20.7-megapixel camera on Sony’s new Xperia Z1 will no doubt get the smartphone a fair amount of attention; in Android-land, especially, for users comparing raw specs, it’s going to be hard to find anything that really measures-up. But even with that ace in the hole, Sony’s handset is going to face some stiff competition from higher-profile phones already on the market, and few get any higher-profile than the Samsung Galaxy S 4. Sure, the GS4 has evolved a lot since ...

Sony Xperia Z1 hands-on (Video)

Sure, we heard some scattered earlier announcements in the days leading up to Sony’s IFA press event, but when we’re talking about major events from the companies we traveled all that way to see, it was Sony who really got things started for the IFA this year with its Wednesday announcement of the Xperia Z1. After following development of this handset through all the leaks of codename Honami, we were well curious to finally get a chance to check it out for ...

Lenovo announces Vibe X smartphone, S5000 tablet

One of the nice things about expos like the IFA is that they give us an opportunity to look at the hardware from manufacturers that don’t necessarily grab our attention too much otherwise. Take Lenovo, for instance: it’s been churning out Android phones, as well as a bunch of tablets, but its models just haven’t yet managed to captivate us like ones from a Samsung or HTC might. Could it finally be ...

Samsung talks Galaxy Gear compatibility; will non-Samsung smartphones ever work?

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, it appeared to confirm something we had feared: that the watch would only be compatible with specific Samsung devices, rather than the sort of broad compatibility we see with watches like the Pebble. As we begin to learn more about the smartwatch, however, it’s becoming clear that the reality of the situation is a bit more complicated than just that, and we very well should be seeing the Galaxy Gear working with ...

Toshiba Encore hands-on (Video)

Early this morning we caught wind of the Toshiba Encore, the latest eight-inch Windows 8 tablet to go official. While not the first tablet running such software in that form factor, running an Intel Bay Trail Atom sure could give it a leg up on the competition, and the very attractive sticker price of a mere $330 could make the Encore difficult to ignore. We simply had to check this guy out for ourselves, and see if it really would be capable of delivering a solid Windows 8 experience while still managing to keep ...

LG G Pad 8.3 vs. Galaxy Note 8.0 (Video)

LG’s return to the tablet market sure isn’t happening during any kind of lull; instead, LG’s going to have some very serious competition facing it, and in the eight-inch space, that’s sure to include Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8.0, released earlier this year. This match-up’s particularly interesting due to each tablet having its own set of attractive qualities, with neither immediately obvious as the technically ...

LG G Pad 8.3 hands-on (Video)

Plenty of manufacturers are getting a head start on the IFA by making their product announces a little early, as was the case over the weekend with LG and its new tablet. LG’s been out of the tablet game for quite a while now, but it’s finally time to do something about that, and the arrival of its G Pad 8.3 is reintroducing LG to the market. Of course, tablets have come a long way during LG’s hiatus, but the company definitely seems like it’s getting back into things with its feet running, ...

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs. Galaxy S 4 (Video)

Samsung has just unwrapped its new phablet flagship, the Galaxy Note 3, and there’s no denying that if you didn’t look closely at it, it would be hard to tell it apart from its smaller sibling, the Galaxy S 4. For many, that’s actually a good thing, since those who actually like the looks of the Galaxy S 4 will be well served by the added note-taking functionality of Samsung’s approach to a phablet. So is your next purchase the Galaxy Note 3, or would you rather stick to something that you can go pick-up at a store tomorrow with the Galaxy S 4? Don’t worry, ...

Galaxy Note 3 vs. Galaxy Note 2 (Video)

Compared to the Galaxy Note 2, the Galaxy Note 3 is familiar, yet different. It’s an upgrade in every aspect, thanks to the use of 3GB of RAM and the brawny Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core CPU (or Exynos 5 Octa, depending on where you get yours). The display, a bit larger than before, also bumps the resolution from 720p to 1080p; this is one of the best displays we’ve ever seen. Visually, the two are similar, save for the much smaller bezels on the Note 3 and the reduced depth. The S-Pen is still there but with new software features. In terms of in-hand feel, the Note 3 feels ...

Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition hands-on (Video)

Yes, it’s still 2013 – you don’t need to double check your calendar. Nevertheless, Samsung’s already introducing us to its 2014 tablet lineup, and today announced its new Galaxy Note 10.1. While the Note 3 and Galaxy Gear were the obvious stars of the company’s Unpacked event, the 2014 Note 10.1′s improvements over last year’s model are arguably even more significant than the changes we see from Note II to 3, especially in that jump up to the new WQXGA 2560 X 1600 resolution. ...

Galaxy Gear smartwatch hands-on (Video)

Every time we hear about a new smartwatch, we find ourselves racing to ask, “is this it? Will this be the one?” And for good reason: for all the innovation we’ve seen in smartwatch designs, and all the variations in hardware and software, there’s yet to be a model that has really ever been much more than a toy for serious tech enthusiasts. It’s that mainstream appeal that’s thus far been elusive. Coming up to today’s launch event, the Samsung Galaxy Gear sure sounded like it might ...

Galaxy Note 3 hands-on (Video)

If you’re a company making a new phablet, you’re not looking to one-up LG and its Optimus G Pro or Sony and its Xperia Z Ultra: you want to be the one coming out with the next Galaxy Note. Luckily for Samsung, it actually does to get to be the one bringing the Galaxy Note 3 to market, and we just saw the manufacturer formally announce the handset a little earlier today in Berlin. While what we saw failed to live up to every rumor (no fingerprint scanner), there was still plenty to be excited about: a new, ...
