Pantech Vega Secret Note off to a strong start in South Korea; should Samsung be worried?

A little over a month ago, we saw Pantech launch its Vega Secret Note phablet. With a 5.9-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 800 SoC, 13-megapixel camera, and 3GB of RAM – not to mention the name Pantech gave it – the phone seemed destined for comparisons to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3. It’s easy to dismiss the Vega Secret Note as a ripoff, lacking premium features like a stylus that uses an active digitizer panel, as opposed to the capacitive pen Pantech ...

Hey, OEMs: either do a stylus right, or not at all

We’re finally going full-circle on the stylus. Back in the Windows Mobile days, the stylus was king, and if you wanted any kind of precision with that less-than-touch-friendly UI on those tiny screens, you absolutely had to have one. But as capacitive displays rose to prominence, the once-noble stylus fell by the wayside, sticking out like a sore thumb, a banner of a previous era. As the years went on, the stylus seemed to fade away from our collective consciousness, but then a little over two years ago, at the 2011 IFA, Samsung debuted the original Galaxy Note with its S Pen. Since ...

Pantech launches fingerprint-scanning Vega Secret Note with Snapdragon 800, 3GB RAM, and stylus

We are on a bit of a kick when it comes to new phablets this morning; we only just wrapped-up telling you about LG’s new G Pro Lite, the company’s budget-minded 5.5-inch handset, and now Pantech has gone official with a phablet of its own, the 5.9-inch Vega Secret Note. This phone managed to show itself a little early, and though its specs were rumored at the time, both the phone’s name (now adding that “secret” bit) ...

Pantech Vega Note fingerprint scanner leaked in pictures

The HTC One Max will not be the only Android phone — hopefully to be announced next week — to join the iPhone 5S in the fingerprint scanner game. Apparently, the Pantech Vega Note will also sport one at its back, in the same place the One Max will, according to leaks, if a recent report and its leaked photos are any indication. October 10, which is tomorrow, is the date circulated as the announcement date for the Pantech Vega Note. However, the images above and below have been leaked ...

Android gets fingerprint-based payment system

In the months leading up to the launch of the iPhone 5S, and confirmation of Apple’s Touch ID system, we heard all manner of suggestions for how the company might make use of fingerprint scanners on its phones. One idea that kept floating to the top of the pile was that it could be tied to a new mobile payment system, authenticating purchases. Now, to an extent, that’s happened – iPhone 5S users can use their fingerprints when buying things on iTunes or in ...

Samsung buys stake in Pantech, 10% for the moment

Samsung and Pantech are direct competitors, and, even more, they’re from the same country, South Korea, together with LG. According to a press release today, the announcement says that Samsung buys stake in Pantech. 10%, to be more specific, according to the wording. That tenth slice will cost Samsung 53 billion won (about $47.6 million), but, on the long run, it is believed to further strengthen “bilateral cooperation in smartphone and other business areas”. With this move Samsung becomes the third largest stake holder in Pantech, after chip-maker Qualcomm Inc. with its ...

Bezel-Less Quad-Core Flagship Coming From Pantech Soon

Screen sizes are becoming larger and larger and so is the “standard” display dimension. Manufacturers are trying to minimize the bezel in order to offer the larger screens in a chassis as small as possible; while we’re still far away from the real “bezel-less” phone, their efforts are solid and remarkable. According to a recent report, South Korean manufacturer Pantech is preparing a real Samsung Galaxy S 4 competitor (or alternative) part of the Vega R series of devices, the IM-A870. It will pack a “bezel-less” five-inch screen and Qualcomm’s ...
