vivo unveils the X60 duo rocking Samsung’s 5nm Exynos 1080 SoC and gimbal-style camera

Chinese smartphone-maker vivo has today launched its latest flagships – the X60 and X60 Pro. The two 5G-ready phones share a lot of their internal specs and come with a couple of firsts. vivo claims that the X60 and its Pro sibling are the world’s first smartphones to come equipped with Samsung’s Exynos 1080 SoC that is based on the 5nm process. Additionally, the vivo x60 is touted to be the thinnest 5G-enabled phone in the world, thanks to a thickness of just 7.36mm. For comparison, the iPhone 12 Mini is just a hair thicker at 7.4mm. But hey, bragging rights are a thing, right?

Coming to the internals, the vivo X60 and X60 Pro offer a 6.56-inch FHD+ (2376×1080 pixels) OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification and hole-punch at the top. Even though the key display specs are identical, the vivo x60 rocks a flat panel, while the Pro model has a curved profile along the edges. On the inside, the Exynos 1080 handles things, ticking alongside 8/12 gigs of RAM (only 12GB configuration on the Pro model) and 128/256 GB of fast UFS 3.1 internal storage.

vivo x60

120Hz OLED display and 33W fast charging

The key differentiator between the two phones is their ZEISS-branded camera hardware. The vivo x60 Pro packs four rear cameras, while the vanilla vivo x60 features three snappers at the back. Both the phones feature an optically stabilized 48MP main camera based on a gimbal-like system that first made its debut with the X50 series.

It is accompanied by a 13MP wide-angle camera with a 120-degree FOV on the vivo x60 duo, sitting alongside a 13MP portrait camera. However, the x60 Pro also adds an 8MP pericope-style telephoto camera at the back with 5x optical zoom and 60x hybrid zoom output. You also get a ton of camera tricks such as night mode portrait shots, a sports portrait mode, and the ability to colorize vintage black-and-white photos using AI.

Camera setup of the vivo x60 Pro

Surprisingly the vanilla vivo x60 packs a larger 4,300mAh battery, while the x60 Pro offers a 4,200mAh Li-ion unit. However, support for 33W flash charge is a trait shared between both the devices. On the software side, the vivo X60 duo runs the new Origin OS 1.0 skin based on Android 11. Of course, both the devices support 5G, while authentication is handled by an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Vivo has priced the x60 starting at  ¥3,499 (~ $535), while the x60 Pro will set buyers back by at ¥4,498 (~ $690). The two devices are currently up for pre-orders from vmall in China, but details about their international are not known at the moment.

Google alongside OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi might launch a foldable phone in 2021

The foldable smartphone market is all set to expand next year. While Samsung and HUAWEI have been in the segment for a couple of years now, Google could try its hands at the foldable market. Further, Chinese OEMs like OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi are also said to introduce their folding phones in 2021. For the unaware, Xiaomi showed its own take on the foldable segment this January. Plus, OPPO recently showcased its concept X, so there’s a lot to be excited about. The phone features a flexible display and structural stacking, bringing users more natural interactive experience.

The latest development comes from Ross Young, the founder and lead analyst at Display Search and DSCC. He took to Twitter to reveal that in the second half of 2021, several OEMs will launch their foldable smartphones. He said that Samsung will announce at least three models, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo will announce four phones in total. Moreover, Google is also expected to join the list of manufacturers for foldable phones. It is said to announce one model as well. Google developing a foldable phone rumor has been there for a while. Back in March 2019, we first heard that Google may be working on a foldable smartphone

In another tweet he says that there will be no Z Fold Lite, which is surprising since several rumors have pointed towards the presence of the device. Even support page for the device was spotted on Samsung India’s official website. It was rumored to launch in the first quarter of 2021 with a $1,100 price tag. Instead, as per Ross, Samsung could announce a new Z Flip Lite in late 2021. The South Korean company is likely already working on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, which are tipped to be announced in the third quarter of 2021.

vivo unveils a new Android-based mobile operating system called OriginOS

vivo has today launched a new mobile operating system based on Android and is calling it OriginOS. Announced at the 2020 Developer Conference, OriginOS focuses on an aesthetic overhaul, deep customization, a smooth user experience, and user convenience. In the words of vivo, OriginOS repurposes familiar features with new exciting designs

From the first looks, it appears that vivo has taken some healthy inspiration from iOS, especially with the customizable widgets. Departing from Funtouch OS, OriginOS also introduces a re-imagined gesture system, better memory optimization and a major aesthetic overhaul – down from new dynamic wallpapers to updated iconography.

Talking about the home screen widgets in OriginOS, they can be resized and positioned to the user’s liking. Plus, they can also change their look depending on weather and daylight timing, while app widgets can show nano alerts for notifications. For memory optimization and system resource management, vivo’s new Android-based mobile operating system brings Multi-Turbo 5.0 technology to the table. The company also claims that OriginOS further refines the app loading experience.

On the aesthetics front, OriginOS also introduces what vivo calls behavioral wallpapers, which are essentially motion wallpapers that change their color and shape based on time of the day as well as weather. For example, a young flower petal will bloom as the day progresses, which you can see in action in the video below:

OriginOS also brings a redesigned quick actions control panel that looks much cleaner. Vivo is yet to detail all the changes OriginOS brings, but the company promises an all-new design experience that appears much cleaner compared to FunTouch OS.

Listed below are all the phones that are eligible for an upgrade to OriginOS, a process that begins before the end of the year:

Vivo to launch its new OriginOS on Nov 18

Vivo recently confirmed that it is working on a new mobile operating system, which is named OriginOS. It will reportedly be replacing the existing FunTouch OS. Now, the Chinese manufacturer has announced that it will be launching its new user interface on November 18 at a special event that is scheduled to take place in Shenzhen, China. Vivo is touting the OriginOS to come with an anthropomorphic design, which will aim to offer a new experience to the users.

Vivo has been doing some exceptional work with its hardware. However, personally, FunTouch OS has always been a downside to the overall fantastic smartphones like the Vivo X50 Pro. We are looking forward to what Vivo brings with its new OriginOS. In the previous teasers, the company has revealed that it is developing the new OS under Origin Studio that carries the tagline “Brave New World.” It will likely be a complete overhaul to the current user interface.

OriginOS will be available for existing Vivo devices as well.

Reportedly, Vivo will be offering two different types of interface for the users — OriginOS and Stock Android. It is said that the company will allow users to choose and switch between the two options. Vivo is also expected to announce several other products at this 2020 Developer Conference alongside the new OS. It could launch new apps, games, business partnerships, and more.

The OriginOS will not only come pre-installed on upcoming Vivo smartphones but it is also said to be made available for the company’s existing devices. However, we’ll have to wait for the launch to know which phones will be compatible with the OriginOS.

Vivo shows off a color-changing rear panel for smartphones

OnePlus had us in awe when it announced the OnePlus Concept One, a phone that could hide its rear cameras behind a layer of glass. OnePlus achieved the camera-hiding magic by covering the lenses with a strip of what it calls electrochromic glass, which automatically darkens when the cameras are not in use. While alternating between transparent and a dark tint on the glass was an impressive feat, vivo is experimenting with something that is truly breathtaking – a rear panel that changes its color.

No, this is not a gradient design that appears to change color when light falls on it from different angles. We’ve already seen those effects come to life on the Aura Glow shade of the Galaxy Note 10 and the OnePlus 8’s Interstellar Shade. What we’re talking about is a rear panel that actually changes color/

As per a post by vivo’s official Weibo handle, the magic behind this impressive feat is the same electrochromic technology used by OnePlus. Now, this is not a truly novel technology, as electrochromic glass (also known as smart glass or dynamic glass) is used in cars, windows, skylights, etc. and changes color/tint via electric stimulus.

But replicating it on a smartphone’s entire rear panel is noteworthy, and the Chinese company also makes it clear that the effect is very hard to achieve. Another important aspect while working on it was to ensure that the rear panel does not drain the battery as it changes its color. The video is in Chinese, but from what we can extract from Google Translate, it appears that the rear panel will change color to remind users about incoming notifications, calls, reminders, etc.

Moreover, it is quite likely that users will be able to color-code each notification with a different shade on the rear panel for easy identification. vivo is still mum regarding when or on what phone we are going to see a color-changing rear panel. But if the color transition is as smooth as shown in vivo’s video, the long wait will be worth it.

Curved displays make your phone look good but they lose out on practicality

I remember when the Galaxy Note Edge debuted back in 2014, it became the talk of the town. I read and watched every first impression and review of the device that year, which includes watching Pocketnow’s video on “Edge lessons” and going gaga over all the features the single curved display offered. Honestly, it was Michael Fisher (@TheMrMobile) and his presentation skills that made me fall in love with the edge functionality.

Back in school, and the geek I was, the Galaxy Note Edge remained my favorite device to talk about. The phone gave birth to Galaxy S6 Edge the following year. It featured a dual-curved display with expanded edge functionalities. It was exciting back then, looking forward to where the design might take us.

Five years later, and to my sheer disappointment, the tech hasn’t evolved much in terms of practicality and has so far remained an eye candy.

Now, I’m not saying that curved displays don’t offer benefits. I’m currently using the OnePlus 8 Pro as my daily driver. It sports a beautiful design and the dual-curved edges give it a premium feel. The ergonomics are good, and it feels thinner in hand than it actually is. The aesthetics of this display have grown on me. It is super-sleek – the curved edges create an illusion of a slimmer device. They minimize the bezels on the side of the phone, which I appreciate. But that is all.

The benefits of curved edges are limited to the looks of the device. Even the Note Edge with one curved edge had more practicality to it than the current curved displays. Now, Samsung does offer the “Edge panel” functionality but it is redundant in my opinion. The side-swipe menus can be implemented just as easily on regular screens.

OnePLus 8 Pro Curved displays, Prakhar Khanna

The curved displays have more drawbacks than upsides. In fact, I feel edge displays gained a lot of attention for over half a decade, but no significant development to actually make them more practical happened. And this was just a missed opportunity that ended up taking a toll on the pocket of consumers.

Another key area where smartphone makers need to work is palm rejection. My colleague Nadeem used the Vivo Nex 3 for a while, and in his own words, the waterfall display bowled him over. The wavy animations during music playback and charging alongside the curved edges lend some practicality aspect to it, but that was just about it. “Sure, the phone turned a few heads, but I couldn’t really find any functional positives for the curved glass that almost wraps around the edges. Capacitive volume controls, the ability to launch certain apps by designating a particular region with tap or long-press gestures, or anything like that would’ve been a great addition, but alas, that wasn’t meant to be”.

The curved displays are more expensive to build than the flat ones. According to iFixit, they make repairs more expensive since they are more challenging to build and replace. Further, they are more fragile when compared to flat displays. Additionally, phones with curved displays are harder to get a grip on as the device is thinner at the edges. Hence, you are more likely to drop your premium phone and break its screen than a cheaper phone with a flat display.

If you want protection, you have to get a bulky and usually ugly case. But doesn’t it negate the only real advantage of curved displays – the looks? Moreover, cases make it harder to use any edge functionality. The phone aesthetics they offer are gone too.

OnePlus 8 Pro, curved displays, Prakhar Khanna

The advantage of looks also disappears when you turn on the display. No matter the quality of the screen, there’s always slight color distortion along the curved edge of the display. Brighter the surrounding, more the two lines of reflections on both sides. It makes the display look as if something has gone wrong with it. Basically, you lose out parts of the display for the sake of looks.

Hence, the argument of paying more for the looks seems illogical to me since your phone is a device that you buy for its functionality and practicality. I wouldn’t like to pay more and get a display that’s easier to break and offers a poor experience in bright conditions. I’d prefer a practical design any day over a good-looking design.

And, by the looks of it, Samsung agrees here. The company went with a flat-screen design with its 2020 flagship Galaxy S20 series. I expect more OEMs to follow suit.

Curved display aesthetics look good in pictures and promos, but when it comes to actually using it on a daily basis, you get to know that there’s hardly any benefit, if not more downsides.

Maybe I am wrong here, and there are many who won’t agree with me. So let’s discuss this in the comments section below. What do you think of curved edges? Do you agree or disagree with me?

VIVO’s camera-centric X50, X50 Pro smartphones are launching in India on July 16

The wait is finally over. VIVO has announced that its camera-centric X50 series smartphones are launching in India on July 16. To recall, the VIVO X50 trio – consisting of the vanilla VIVO X50, VIVO X50 Pro, and the VIVO X50 Pro+ – was launched in China last month to much fanfare, thanks to the hype surrounding their camera capabilities.

However, the Chinese smartphone maker will only bring the VIVO X50 and its Pro sibling to India. A report from Gadgets 360 claims that the top-of-the-line VIVO X50 Pro+ with the Snapdragon 865 chip at its heart and a quad camera setup won’t make it to the Indian smartphone market.

As for the VIVO X50 and its Pro variant, both of them feature an AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC paired with up to 8 gigs of RAM. The quad camera setup at the back includes a 48MP camera with a gimbal-like stabilization system and a 32MP selfie snapper.

Vivo could launch a smartwatch soon

Vivo is allegedly working on a smartwatch. It could be named Vivo Watch. Two variants of the device were spotted at the 3C certification platform in the previous month. The listing suggests that the Vivo Watch could be launched in China soon. Now, the device has been spotted listed in the database of the Bluetooth SIG certification platform.

The latest listing confirms support for Bluetooth 5.0 on the Vivo Watch. It carries model number W2056. To recall, the 3C listing had revealed two model numbers namely, W2056 and W2052. It also revealed that the Vivo Watch might come with 5W charging.

At present, there is no official word on the launch of Vivo Watch. However, devices generally go official in a timeframe of around one month after appearing at Bluetooth SIG. Hence, it could go official by the end of next month.
