Pocketnow Weekly 079: Galaxy S 5 whispers, Moto moves, and the CES 2014 virgin experience

[vamp] [vamp] [vamp] [vamp] That’s the text that leads us in to each episode of the Pocketnow Weekly: a column of virtual prompts on the rough rundown reminding us that, after our loosely scripted intro block, there’s a gulf of pure off-topic nonsense between the opening music and the rundown’s news section. It’s a handful of minutes devoted to office banter, good-natured ribbing, and, in today’s case, an EQ experiment by our own Taylor Martin that results in him literally reading the “vamp” cues out loud like the delightful troll he is. ...

Lumia Black features are exciting if you’re living in 2011

Late last year, news came out that the Nokia Lumia Black update rollout was going to commence. As a matter of fact, as of the time of this writing, the Lumia Black update has already gone out to the Lumias 1020, 925, and unlocked 920′s. Coming along with Microsoft’s GDR3 package would be a suite of Nokia-bred software, which – are you sitting down? – would primarily be camera-centric apps and enhancements. I know. Try and hide your surprise. But along with those camera enhancements would come a couple of interesting features. Interesting, that is, if you’re using Windows ...

Lumia Black update hitting unlocked Nokia Lumia 920 phones

Over the weekend the Lumia Black update started hitting unlocked Lumia 1020 devices across the world; the update was first pushed out to American variants of the phone, after its introduction on the Lumia 1520 phablet, with which it shipped out of the box. We’re seeing and hearing several reports that unlocked Nokia Lumia 920 phones are also getting the Lumia Black package, which consists of Windows Phone 8 GDR3, with Nokia’s own Black suite on top of it. Among the things included, worthy of mentioning are: the ability to group apps into folders (requires AppFolder app), ...

Nokia Lumia Black update starts international distrubition

Nokia’s offered its users plenty of reasons to look forward to its new Lumia Black software update. Indeed, the problem hasn’t been a lack of features, but simply getting your hands on the software; the Lumia 1520 runs Black out of the box, and we saw AT&T start delivering Black to Lumia 1020 owners in the States, but what of international users, not to mention ...

RAW vs. JPG photography on the Lumia 1020

The Nokia Lumia 1020 just received an update last week that enables RAW Adobe DNG file format support when taking photos. There is a new option that you can select in the Nokia Camera app’s settings area. It’s not on by default of course, but the new option enables each shot to save a 5 megapixel JPG plus a full resolution 38 megapixel Adobe Digital Negative RAW file. Now before you go turning it on and trying it out, in order to take advantage of the RAW file format, you’ll need a good RAW image editor on your PC. Personally, I prefer the Adobe Camera RAW plug-in for ...

Pocketnow Weekly 075: 2K screens, iris scanners, and learning to use a Jolla

Just what use would an iris scanner be on a smartphone? When will 2K displays take over the smartphone world (and why should we care)? How exactly does one spell “Magotes,” anyway? If these questions have ever crossed your worried minds -and even if they haven’t- the second-to-last episode of the Pocketnow Weekly’s 2013 season is right up your twisted alley, friend. But even if you’re not interested in such tomfoolery, there’s still plenty here to ping your pong. In this episode we talk headline-grabbing rumors like the Galaxy S 5 and wooden Moto X, yes ...

Nokia Camera app updated with DNG format support

Nokia is constantly trying to improve its flagship cameras and also, at the same time, re-confirm its position as a leader in imaging technology and innovation with its smartphones. Currently, the Lumia 1020 is considered by many to be the best camera on a smartphone, and the Lumia 1520, coming shortly to AT&T, will bring a similar experience to a phablet form factor. We’ve been hearing about RAW image output functionality from Nokia’s flagship camera phones for quite some time, and today, the Finns have updated their Nokia Camera app to support just that. The change log is ...

Bluetooth LE coming to all Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices with the Black Update

Bluetooth LE was rumored, back in summer, to come to Lumia Windows Phones as part of the Amber software update. If you have a Lumia 520, 620, 625, or 720, and it is running Amber, you are already able to benefit from the Low Energy protocols. According to a Nokia FAQ page, “with Lumia Black software update, Bluetooth LE will be enabled across the full WP8 Lumia range.” That’s exciting if you are using accessories paired to your phone, like heart-rate monitors, and alike. As a reminder, ...
