Thank goodness the Surface Mini was cancelled

Last week we heard from the good folks at Neowin about the tablet that never was, but maybe should have been – the Surface Mini. This Microsoft built tablet would have been of the eight inch variety and was pulled back at the last minute just before we got the Surface Pro 3. The Surface Pro 3 is arguably the best hardware ever released by Microsoft. It has a few teensy weensy flaws, but overall is one helluva device.Whether or not the pull back of the Surface Mini led directly to the release of the Surface Pro 3, is unclear. It’s very possible we may have seen both of them at the same ...

Surface Mini hands-on account describes the tablet we never got

How close were we to getting the Surface Mini this past May? To hear the reports, Microsoft’s decision not to introduce us to its pint-sized tablet at the event that ultimately delivered the Surface Pro 3 was very much a last-minute one. In the time that’s followed, we saw evidence for the tablet’s existence in the form of inadvertent ...

Microsoft acknowledges aborted Surface Mini launch in earnings report

For a moment in time, it seemed like such a sure thing: following the first two generations of full-sized Surface tablets, this past spring it finally looked like Microsoft was going to introduce a more compact Surface Mini. In the days leading up to the company’s May event, the Mini was the clear favorite for the new hardware likely to be featured, but at the last minute

Microsoft’s official Surface Pro 3 user guide littered with Surface Mini references

Leading up to last month’s Surface Pro 3 launch event, we were very much expecting to see the Surface Mini, instead. Really, that’s what we expected the main focus to be, and it wasn’t until just about a week prior to the announcement that we started getting the sense that this was going to be a Pro 3 shindig. If we’re to believe the rumors, there’s a good reason we were getting that Mini vibe, and

The Surface Mini was pushed back because it wasn’t unique enough to compete?

Even though we were all expecting yesterday to be the Microsoft Surface Mini event, and where we also expected a Surface Pro 3 to be launched, it turned out to be a Surface Pro 3 event, and the Mini was no where to be found. We can’t say we’re disappointed with yesterday’s event, as the Surface Pro 3 has done a great job in giving us some wow for the platform, but we can’t deny that we weren’t waiting for Microsoft’s unique stab at what a smaller tablet should be, and actually that’s the reason why no mini product was launched. According to some ...

Pocketnow Weekly 096: phone lasers, remixes, and the false promise of “Prime”

What exactly qualifies as a “remix?” How deluded do you have to be to believe in all these “Prime” rumors? Why are we so transfixed by the notion of lasers on smartphones, and so easily taken in by a smartphone commercial, if it’s shot like a trailer for Inception? We tackle these questions, and the biggest announcement section in the history of the podcast, in episode 096 of the Pocketnow Weekly. No, that’s not bragging – it’s just an unavoidable symptom of a month packed with unboxings, hands-ons, product launches, and reviews (both ...

Microsoft to launch the Surface Pro 3 next week along with the Surface Mini?

Even thought he Microsoft Surface hasn’t been as popular as most of us feel it deserves to be, at least in its Pro model, it doesn’t change the fact that Microsoft is still betting hard on it. Is Microsoft bringing the Surface Mini too late?

Rumors are swirling about a new device about to burst forth from the fertile loins of Redmond. A Surface Mini looks to be unveiled later this very month and it will bring Microsoft up to speed with all the form factors that are held by today’s tablet-toters. The only problem is, that Microsoft is kinda already up to speed in this arena, but it’s throwing another tablet into the mix anyway. The Surface Mini follows in the footsteps of other devices that carry the “Mini” tag, which is to say it will be a smaller, 8” inch version of it’s older and larger sibling. This is ...

Surface Mini to be powered by Qualcomm, multiple slates expected on May 20

A Surface Mini has been rumored for quite some time — actually, since last year — and according to recent reports, it might land, finally, this month. There will be a certain May 20 Microsoft event where the smaller slate is expected to make an appearance, and the inter webs are already trying to anticipate some of the features (or lack thereof).
