Samsung boldly expects 60 million Galaxy S8 unit shipments, 100 million J-series sales

Samsung seems to have impressively bounced back from embarrassing Galaxy Note 7 scandals already, at least as far as overall financial gains are concerned, never suffering much in terms of brand confidence anyway.

But the real test is yet to come, and we’re all curious about the market’s response to a prospectively game-changing Galaxy S8. As always, its makers expect the world from the “next big thing”, reportedly asking supply partners for enough components to build and sell 60 million units this year alone.

Just how ambitious is that number? Not as ambitious as 100 million, which is apparently the 2017 shipment goal of the low to mid-end Galaxy J lineup. Meanwhile, the upper mid-range Galaxy A series, now consisting of water-resistant models, has its sights set on a “modest” 20 million sales target.

To put those figures in the right context, let’s look back at the Galaxy S7, S6 and S5, which reportedly sold between 45 and 48 million copies apiece, preceded by the most successful S in history, the 70-million-worth GS4.

Of course, the Note family wasn’t that big in 2013, the high-end smartphone industry didn’t know what saturation meant, and the budget flagship concept sounded like a pipe dream.

As for entry-level J devices, they badly need lower price points than last year to fend off an avalanche of sub-$250 China-made killers, slowly making their way even stateside. Bottom line, it’s all doable for the global smartphone champ, but it’s not going to be easy.

Still having trouble letting go of a not-so-distant past when 4 to 4.5-inch smartphones were not only the industry norm, but also a power user’s top choice? Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo begins receiving OTA Marshmallow treats

Not many people got the appeal or saw the point of a Galaxy S5 Neo derivation released more than a year after the standard model with extremely similar overall specifications, an Exynos processor replacing a Snapdragon, and no fingerprint sensor or 32GB internal storage option. But for the few that did embrace the summer 2015-unveiled mid-ranger pre-loaded with Android 5.1 Lollipop, Samsung has a surprise in store. One you probably lost all ...

Slow and steady: Android Marshmallow spreads to T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S5

It’s been roughly a month and a half since Sprint surprised its older, more devoted customers with an unusually early OS promotion to Android 6.0 for the ancient Galaxy S5 and S5 Sport, and at long last, T-Mobile follows the Now Network’s suit today.Of course, Magenta can’t update the GS5 Sport, seeing as how it never carried such a model of Samsung’s spring 2014 flagship, instead “only” sending Marshmallow ...

Androids crash way more often than iPhones, Galaxy S6 leads shame list

Beyond matters of personal preference, like how an OS looks or subjective brand reliability, what tends to separate Android devices and iPhones in the eyes of many is security and software stability. Samsung Galaxy S5 mini inches closer to Marshmallow update

AT&T LG V10, Sprint Galaxy Note Edge and S5 Sport all jump on the Marshmallow bandwagon

Could we be looking at double-digit share for Android 6.0 in distribution numbers before long? You’d think it’s about time, with the first Marshmallow OTA packages available for Nexus devices as far back as October 2015, and build N inching closer and closer to its own release.Unfortunately, last we heard from Google, there were still less than 5 percent of the world’s Androids on the newest OS flavor, so getting to 10 might ...
