Apple’s new Mini-LED iPad Pro may launch in Q1 2021

Rumors about Apple devices with mini-LED displays have been around for quite some time, so our time expecting them has also been extended. However, it seems that the wait may be getting closer to an end. A new report from Korea suggests that we may get a new iPad Pro with a mini-LED display in the first quarter of 2021.

According to a report from ET News, Apple would present its new iPad Pro with Mini-LED displays in the first months of 2021. LG would supply the display, and Patently Apple also claims that the company will also start mass production of these panels at the end of this year. Still, we have seen reports claiming that Apple has been preparing its supply chain for the future mini-LED devices since July.

If we go back this year, we can see that leaker L0vetodream gave us information saying that Apple would give us a new iPad Pro featuring a new A14X chip, 5G connectivity, and a mini-LED display in the first half of 2021. Ming-Chi Kuo has also given us insight into the matter, as he believes that the first model to include this new technology will be the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

However, we must also remember that Apple already refreshed its iPad Pro lineup back in March. Still, this could also mean that we may not get a major update. In other words, we could get a similar design, but the new models would feature mini-LED displays, a new and more powerful A14X processor, and 5G connectivity.

Now, Apple may also be working to include mini-LED displays in future MacBook models. This technology will give us an iPad Pro with a brighter display, improved contrast ratio, and increased power efficiency. So hopefully, we will see these displays make their way to smartphones as well.

The new iPad Pro could be the first Apple device with mini-LED display

The idea of getting mini-LED Apple products has been out for quite a while. We have heard rumors mentioning possible MacBook Pros and iPads with mini-LED displays to be launched this year, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. Now, we get information from a very reliable source, claiming that the new iPad Pro will be Apple’s first device with mini-LED displays.

It seems that Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple has been working on mini-LED displays for some time now, and we may soon get a total of six new products featuring this technology. According to Kuo, these will be new iPads and Macs, but he is very specific as to which will be the first Apple device to include this feature, and it seems it will be the iPad Pro.

He claims that Apple will be accelerating mini-Led panels’ adoption because they are performing better than expected in current testing. These new displays would be manufactured by a new supplier called Sanan Optoelectronics, and they could appear on the next 12.9-inch iPad Pro. He also mentions that Epistar will remain the main mini-LED panel supplier for Apple, but the company needed to get more panels to meet the initial demand.

“While Sanan has seen rapid development of its mini-LED capabilities that could allow it ship large quantities of the chips to Apple in the first half of 2021, Kuo says that Epistar has experienced some yield issues that have led Kuo to reduce his fourth-quarter 2020 display shipment estimates by 50% to between 300,000 and 400,000.”

We are also expecting the next iPad Pro to include 5G connectivity, even though we’re not sure if we would only get sub-6GHz support or the faster mmWave 5G antenna. The new iPad Pros and the future MacBooks with mini-LED displays would feature great color gamut performance, high contrast, dynamic range, and local dimming for darker blacks. Rumors suggest that we may see them arrive in the first quarter of 2021.

New mini-LED 14-inch MacBook Pro could enter production in 2021

Back in March, we saw that Ming-Chi Kuo was talking about a new 14-inch MacBook Pro. He believes that this new mini-LED laptop will take the 13-inch MacBook Pro’s place in 2021, and new information from Taiwan suggests that he is right.

According to TrendForce, Apple suppliers are getting ready to manufacture 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops with mini-LED displays. These new models should start production in the first quarter of 2021, and they would include brighter displays and high contrast ratios. These new panels would also help Apple to give its users thinner and lighter devices. Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned six new mini-LED products by the end of 2021, which would include these new MacBook Pros, which are expected to include Apple Silicone.

It is also believed that Apple may launch a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED displays in the first quarter of 2021. These new iPads could arrive with a 5nm A14X chip and 5G connectivity.

We have been getting more rumors and predictions about Apple working on launching future iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models with mini-Led technology. Now, the latest report from DigiTimes claims that Cupertino is already adding more companies to its supply chain to make flexible printed circuit boards for its future mini-LED devices.

“Both firms are expected to start small-volume shipments of mini LED-backlit modules in the fourth quarter of 2020 to support the launch of new ‌iPad Pro‌ in the first quarter of 2021, the sources said. As such modules are likely to become standard specs for diverse new iPads and MacBooks, Zhen Ding and Flexium can secure a new profitable outlet for their flexible boards, the sources noted.”

We get new reports from DigiTimes claiming that, according to industry sources, Apple has added Taiwan’s Zhen Ding Technology and Flexium Interconnect to its supply chain to make parts for its future mini-LED iPad Pro and MacBook Pros. They would be competing with Young Poong Electronics to get a larger part of the required, flexible boards. DigiTimes also claims that we could see these new devices next year, as a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED technology and 5G could arrive sometime in Q1 2021. We are also expecting to get new MacBook Pros with mini-LED panels, a 16-inch refresh and a new 14.1-inch version next year.
