Microsoft Surface Pro is one of those products that I include in one-of-a-kind things. It is a compact 2-in-1 PC, which is perfect for someone with my kind of use case. This comes from a Surface Pro user. I love working on it so much that I wrote an article about it. If you are in the market for a 2-in-1, this is your chance. Apple’s new MacBook Air with M1 silicon is already $100 off this Black Friday

Ever since its debut earlier this month, the new MacBook Air with Apple’s own M1 silicon has received stellar reviews for the performance boost it brings to the table. Pocketnow’s own Jaime Rivera has been mighty impressed with the performance of this fanless machine, especially when it comes to demanding tasks such as exporting high-resolution videos. For all that firepower, many industry experts called it a great purchase at $999. But if you’ve been holding on for a price cut, B&H has already taken a sweet 10% off the device’s usual price, despite it being barely over a month old.

At the moment of writing this, the base configuration of the MacBook Air with 8 gigs of RAM, 256GB of onboard storage, and the M1 silicon can be yours for $899. Do keep in mind that the Apple M1 silicon version you get on this base configuration has a 7-core GPU, while the higher-end pricier variant has an 8-core GPU. But the base variant that is currently going on for $899 still offers plenty of processing power that can handle anything you throw at it with ease.

                              MacBook Air with M1 silicon
The new MacBook Air with the M1 silicon has set a new standard for performance that is way higher than what an Intel-powered Mac can offer. And with a $100 discount at B&H that brings its price down to just $899, you should definitely get this as your next machine.

As for the rest of the package, you get a 13.3-inch Retina display (2560×1600 pixels, the M1 chip handling things under the hood, 8 gigs of RAM, and 256GB of onboard storage. The biggest improvement is in the battery department, with Apple claiming up to 15 hours of web browsing and 18 hours of movie playback. Apple has also upgraded the Type-C Thunderbolt port to USB 4.0 standard, of which there are two on the device. The design remains the same as the Intel-powered MacBook Air, but Apple has removed the internal fan for more silent operation.

Read this Twitter thread by Pocketnow’s Jaime Rivera highlighting the insane power of the M1 MacBook Air and decide for yourself:

Apple shifts a portion of iPad and MacBook assembly from China to Vietnam

The ongoing US-China trade war has been an ugly saga, involving everything from app bans over data security concerns, trade prohibitions over espionage charges using telecom equipment, and raised tariffs that have thrown the future of many companies into jeopardy. The latest company to face the heat is Apple, which has reportedly decided to shift the production of MacBooks and iPads to Vietnam, away from China. It must be noted that chief Apple supply partner – Foxconn – is only moving some iPad and MacBook assembly away from China, and not in its entirety.

“The move was requested by Apple,” a person familiar with the recent developments was quoted as saying by Reuters. “It wants to diversify production following the trade war.” The major shift is reportedly inspired by encouragement from the US government to shift production away from China, prompting Taiwanese firms to look at other destinations such as Vietnam, India, and Mexico to continue serving their deep-pocket US partners such as Apple.

Foxconn is headed towards Vietnam at Apple's request

“Foxconn is building assembly lines for Apple’s iPad tablet and MacBook laptop at its plant in Vietnam’s northeastern Bac Giang province,” the report added. Foxconn’s new assembly line in Vietnam for making MacBooks and iPads is said to become operational in 2021’s first half. However, it is unclear how big a chunk of iPad and MacBook assembly Foxconn is migrating from China to Vietnam.

Foxconn has not shared any details regarding the move, but the company’s latest $270 million investment for setting up a new subsidiary that goes by the name FuKang Technology Co Ltd is reportedly a part of the expansion plans in Vietnam. It is interesting to note that all iPads are exclusively made in China, so this would mark the first time that their assembly is being done out of the country.

Foxconn’s factory in Vietnam will reportedly be used to make TVs for Sony and a few other devices such as keyboards as well. However, Vietnam is not the only country that will serve the purpose of diversifying the production of Apple devices away from China. Foxconn is reportedly investing a billion dollars to expand its facility in India and bolster iPhone production in the country.

Upcoming redesigned MacBooks might also have an Intel variant

Yesterday, we reported that Apple’s redesigned MacBook models are all set to debut in the second half of 2021. The laptops are tipped to be powered by in-house silicon as a part of the company’s two-year transition away from Intel processors across its Mac lineup. However, a new report claims that Apple might also launch Intel variants of its redesigned MacBooks next year.

Apple might not be done with Intel…just yet

The latest development comes from reliable leaker known as “L0vetodream” who took to Twitter to tip that redesigned MacBooks coming in the second half of 2021 will include models with both Intel and Apple silicon processors. The tweet was in reply to an article referring to the launch of redesigned MacBooks with Apple silicon in the second half of 2021.

In simple terms, the leakster says that the MacBook redesigns expected in the second half of 2021 will not be only for ‌Apple Silicon‌ models. This implies that the redesigned MacBooks will also come in Intel-powered variants.

The new Mac is matching or outperforming higher-end machines like the 16-inch MacBook Pro in some tasks.

For the unaware, Apple unveiled a slew of new products with the most crucial of them being its own ARM chip for Macs. It announced three Macs including the MacBook Air, Pro and the Mac mini. While the latter two are said to be close competitors to their Intel counterparts, the MacBook Air has surprised the reviewers with its excellent performance despite the fan-less design. It is matching or outperforming the higher-end MacBook Pro in some tasks.

Apple is already reported to announce a new mini-LED and a lower-priced iPad in 2021. The redesigned MacBooks could also feature mini-LED displays. For reference, mini-LED and OLED displays offer many similar benefits over the LCD displays. They provide higher brightness, improved contrast ratio, and increased power efficiency over the traditional LCD counterparts. The company is reportedly preparing its supply chain for the future mini-LED devices since July.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip successor might rock a 120Hz display and slimmer bezels

Fine, let’s now move on to news. If you tuned in yesterday, one of the things we talked about is that we would be getting the next Galaxy Z Flip, later than the Galaxy S21 unlike last year where we got them at the same event. Well, according to some new reports from the Elec this phone was actually delayed, mainly to push production for the Galaxy S21 and because of what we covered yesterday which said that Samsung doesn’t want new products to mess with their regular sales as the Galaxy Note might disappear. The report also adds that Samsung might launch anywhere between three to five foldables next year, maybe they’re adding more phones to each line-up with different price points. On another note (pun intended), a new leak from Ice Universe says that this phone will actually be called the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and it will bring an improved 120Hz display, narrower bezels and it will get a cheaper price tag. Now, we don’t actually know how cheaper yet but, if they really want this strategy to succeed, they should at least price this and the Z Fold 3, somewhat closer to the Note’s price point.

We have new images of the Samsung Galaxy S21 or the Galaxy S21+

And yes, let’s keep talking about Samsung but this time for the Galaxy S21 and I guess you can say we’re in the home stretch when it comes to leaks for this phone. We have some new case renders for either the S21 or the S21+ telling by this design. They show the flat display which will either be 6.2in or 6.7in depending on the variant, both rocking 120Hz display rates at FHD+, kind of a downgrade when compared to the S20. At the back you can also see the camera array which is significantly smaller than the Ultra’s rocking three cameras which consist of a 12MP main sensor, a 64MP telephoto and a 12MP ultra wide. A while ago we also had other case renders for the Ultra but we didn’t do a daily that day and, the thing about it is that all we can see is the camera array and not the display. We’re expecting an event to happen sometime around January 14 so let’s see, things should only get more interesting from here.

                              Story of the day:

Redesigned MacBooks with Apple silicon are coming in H2 2021: Kuo

And finally the hottest news today have to do with Apple, the fact that we still can’t believe how good those M1 MacBooks are, and yet why you might wanna wait a little to buy. I mean sure, Cupertino just unveiled these new batch of computers, but the concerns of many are valid, they seriously look like the old ones in every way. It would make sense for anyone to want a re-design, and we also wonder what the next batch of Apple Silicon chips is gonna be able to do. Well, according to a new research note from Ming Chi Kuo, the next step in Apple’s two year transition away from Intel is redesigned MacBooks. Now, he didn’t really specify which models we’re getting, but he has previously said that we should expect a redesigned 16in and a 14in MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon that should launch in the second or third quarter of 2021. Based on other Kuo reports, we should also expect some new miniLED Macs and a lower priced iPad in the first quarters of the year. Now, when it comes to sales, he predicts that the demand for these M1 Macs is actually higher than expected, and the 12 Pro and Pro Max are actually stealing the show when it comes to iPhones as the demand for the regular 12 and the Mini is not as high. Finally, both Apple Watches are selling well thanks to the new health management functions and the improved design.

Redesigned MacBooks with Apple silicon are coming in H2 2021: Kuo

This season, Apple unveiled a slew of new products with the most crucial of them being its own ARM chip for Macs. While it announced three Macs including the MacBook Air, Pro and the Mac mini, the design remained unchanged. Now, a new report claims that redesigned MacBooks are a thing and they are coming soon. The company might release additional MacBook models with Apple Silicon in the second half of 2021.

The latest development comes from MacRumors, which cites a research note by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The report claims that redesigned MacBook models with Apple silicon are part of the company’s two-year transition away from Intel processors across its Mac lineup. However, Kuo did not specify which models these will be, but he has previously claimed that redesigned 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro models with Apple Silicon are due to be launched in the second or third quarter of 2021.

Apple is already reported to announce a new mini-LED model and a lower-priced iPad in 2021. Kuo predicts that the demand for M1 Macs is higher than expected. Further, the report adds that iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max demand is higher than anticipated. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 and 12 mini’s demand is not as high as was expected. This comes as a surprise since the vanilla iPhone 12 (review) offers better value for money than its same-sized Pro sibling. Moreover, Apple Watch Series 6 and Series SE are both selling well too. The report says “innovative health management functions and improved design” can be attributed to the good sale.

Snapchat ‘Spotlight’ is yet another TikTok rival

And let’s be honest, Snapchat may be my least favorite service ever, but it’s probably the most copied service we’ve ever seen as. Look at Instagram stories, Whatsapp, Facebook, and even Twitter now with Fleets. Well, it looks like now they’re doing it to someone else. The company just launched a new feature called “Spotlight” which is basically made to compete with TikTok and Instagram’s “Reels” but, Snapchat’s got a trick up their sleeve. So, Spotlight let’s users showcase their 60 second videos which are focused on memes and jokes rather than your day to day life like stories where meant to. For the viewer, it will pretty much work like TikTok where the algorithm shows you content related to what you’ve seen in the past. The thing about it is that Snapchat will be paying creators to post on the platform, they will award $1M between the most popular creators on the app per day through the end of this year so, if you have a viral video you might get a piece of the $1M. Spotlight is currently launching to 11 countries so, if that’s your thing go check it out. Let’s hope this algorythm finally fixes their lack of good discovery.

New M1 MacBook Air has been found with 128GB for just $799

Let’s move on to Apple Silicon Macs as yes, Apple did end up making at least one of them more affordable, but there’s a catch. The latest M1 MacBook Air was spotted in Apple’s US Education Institute Hardware and Software list and it’s actually cheaper. This was found on Reddit and this is the regular 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU MacBook Air, with 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM for $799. The thing about it is that, this is strictly for education purposes so, if you work or study at a school that purchases these then you might get your hands on one but, it looks like that might be the only way. This is not a variant that consumers can buy in a store. And on another note, Craig Federighi, aka Mr Wiggle Mode himself, went on an interview and talked about M1 Macs running windows. Please stop trying to run Parallels on them. He claims that Windows could run on these Macs but it’s really up to Microsoft. Thing is since this version of Windows on ARM is emulated, who knows if that will happen. Can any of you imagine Windows running on these ARM chips like a champ?

iPad Pro to get OLED displays after adopting mini-LED in early 2021: Report

And since we’re talking Apple, let’s discuss their future plans for iPads, especially when it comes to the display technology they’re using. We’ve been covering rumors of miniLED iPads for years, but now according to a new report from The Elec, Cupertino is finally planning to adopt OLED displays for the iPad Pro line up. It seems there will be a wait, though, as we know that Apple is working on the transition to miniLED displays for Q1 of next year. The report claims that OLED displays on these will actualy happen shortly after, meaning also within 2021. These displays would be provided by Samsung but, it also says that the adoption of OLED could be delayed, depending on the scale of adoption of miniLED. Again, these miniLED displays are slated for Q1 while OLEDs should come later. This means that Apple might really just upgrade their current LCDs to miniLED and then eventually move on to OLED at least when it comes to iPads because, we know that miniLEDs should be a huge thing for Macs. Whatever the case may be, this might be what will differentiate the next generation of iPads and Macs in 2021, and let’s hope that enables new designs.

OnePlus 9 might sport two 48MP camera sensors

OnePlus 9 Pro leak gives us our first look at its design prior to a March 2021 debut

Now how about if we shift focus to Android and particularly the OnePlus 9 as, we’re expecting this phone to launch a little earlier than usual so the rumors are starting to intensify. Beginning with the regular variant, last week we got some CAD renders for it showing a new white color variant and a triple camera array. Now, we have a new leak from 91Mobiles that claims that the two main cameras from these renders are two 48MP sensors. This means we’ll get a 48MP primary that delivers 12MP images, as well as a 48MP ultra wide. The third and smaller lens would be a macro or monochrome sensor in typical OnePlus fashion. Now, moving on to the Pro variant, we have some new CAD renders from OnLeaks showing off the design changes. From these we can see some smaller bezels, a “Pacific Blue” colorway if you know what I mean, and the new camera array which is pretty similar to the one on the 8T. The 9 Pro is expected to bring a 6.7in display, probably running at up to 144Hz and it will be powered by the Snapdragon 875, or whatever the latest Qualcomm chip will be called. We’ll keep you posted as it’s expected to come some time in March, and I seriously wonder what is it with companies wanting to launch phones earlier next year.

                              Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 might launch sooner than expected

And finally the hottest news today have to do with Samsung, and how the company plans to re-imagine their approach to flagships in 2021. We’ve covered the possibility of the Galaxy Note lineup saying goodbye, and today we get more credible information that goes beyond not seeing it in a listing. According to a new report from Korea, we might be getting this phone earlier the Galaxy Z Fold 3 earlier in 2021. The report suggests that Samsung is already working on this phone and it could possibly launch in June 2021. The report also mentions that this foldable could have support for the S-Pen like we’ve heard before. It also reiterates on the report we covered last week, that claims that we’re getting an under the display selfie shooter, even if we were expecting that until Q3. It also adds that Sammy was able to add an in-screen WACOM digitizer but, they still faced some difficulties with the protective layer which scratches with the S Pen but it’s sounding like they were able to fix it, maybe thanks to the new UTG we’re expecting. With all of the reports on the missing Galaxy Note 21, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra supporting an S Pen, it looks like Samsung is about to re-invent it’s approach to its second batch of product launches.

New M1 MacBook Air has been found with 128GB for just $799

Benchmarks, reviews, and several opinions prove that Apple’s latest M1 devices are some of the most powerful laptops in the market. Apple’s new M1 lineup includes a new 13-inch MacBook Pro, a MacBook Air, and a Mac mini. You can get one of these new products starting at $699 for the Mac mini, $999 for the Air, and $1,299 for the Pro. However, a new MacBook Air with 128GB storage for just $799 has appeared, but it may not be for everyone.

The latest M1 MacBook Air has been spotted with 128GB storage at Apple’s US Education Institute Hardware and Software Price List. Now, what’s curious about this is that the M1 MacBook Air is only available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options on the Apple Store. Less storage also means a lower price, that’s why its price tag reads $799, but who is this variant meant for?

Reddit user “u/dduci97” was the one who found the new Air listed with an M1 chip, with an 8-core CPU, a 7-core GPU, 8GB RAM, and 128GB. However, Apple hasn’t made this variant available on its US Education Store, which makes us believe that it will not be available for the general public. Now, Apple is giving options to purchase the MacBook Air in bulk quantities, which could mean that it will target schools or universities as possible buyers, and if it does become available for everyone, this MacBook Air could arrive with an $899 price tag, meaning it would be the cheapest option in years.

On another note, Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak were recently interviewed by Ars Technica. They were asked about the possibility of using Microsoft and Windows on the M1 Macs since there is currently no Boot Camp feature for them. They were very clear to say that it’s “up to Microsoft.”

“As for Windows running natively on the machine, “that’s really up to Microsoft,” he said. “We have the core technologies for them to do that, to run their ARM version of Windows, which in turn of course supports x86 user mode applications. But that’s a decision Microsoft has to make, to bring to license that technology for users to run on these Macs. But the Macs are certainly very capable of it.”

He also suggested that one of the best possibilities in the future would be to have Windows in the cloud, making reference to CrossOver, which allows x86 Windows apps to run on Apple M1 Macs, using Rosetta 2. Further, Ars Technica did a series of tests of the latest M1 Chrome, showing that it’s up to 80 percent faster than the Rosetta 2 version. Just in case you were planning on downloading Chrome on your new M1 MacBook Air.

“Across all tests, the native M1 version of Chrome performed between 66 and 81 percent better than the version of Chrome running through Rosetta 2. Safari was the fastest browser of all, of course, having been designed by Apple, and it came out on top across all of the tests.”

You can easily download the new M1 version of Google Chrome for your Apple Silicon Mac by going to the Chrome website. You just have to select the “Mac with Apple Chip” option after clicking the download button.
