RIP Pebble and Apple’s business post iPhone | #PNWeekly 230

It’s come to this. The end of Pebble. Juan’s favorite smartwatch has shuffled off its mortal coil. As despondent as he is, the industry must move on, as must the discussion of wearable technology. Where do we go from here? Also, is Apple to reliant on phones for profit? Yes. Yes they are. What might be the solution for generating shareholder value in an era of smartphone saturation? We don’t know, but we’re going to talk about it.

No shipments for Pebble Time 2, Core, Time Round with Fitbit acquisition

Health tracking tech company Fitbit has purchased smartwatch company Pebble.

That leaves the latter gutted of its staff and intangibles while those who have backed the Pebble Time 2 smartwatch are being left with refunds. Pebble Core and Pebble Time Round backers will also receive their money back instead of units. Imbursements should come starting December 16 and the process may take until March 2017 to complete.

The company has announced that all of the Pebble 2 Kickstarter perks have been fulfilled and no further Pebble 2 purchases will be fulfilled. Refunds requested from Pebble.com before December 7 will be given out. Pebble purchases from retail are subject to each store’s particular return policy. Warranties have been invalidated.

If you own a Pebble device, the software and/or service functionality of it may be reduced in the future. However, they will operate as they have been for now.

The startup has ended all of its business operations and is in the process of winding down and fulfilling refunds. More details on peripherals and currency exchanges may be found on the Pebble 2/Time 2/Core’s Kickstarter page and on Pebble’s blog post.

Fitbit may only be interested in Pebble’s software, Time 2 and Core nearing cancellation [Update: confirmed]

Update: The “leader in the connected health and fitness market” has just announced it’s indeed acquiring “specific assets of Pebble.” Namely, “key personnel and intellectual property related to software and firmware development.” Nothing hardware-related, as expected.

Interestingly enough, it seems the transaction was already completed yesterday, December 6, though all the financial details remain under wraps. Fitbit is looking to build on its strengths and extend its leadership position in the wearables category after the purchase, but it’s unclear if the Pebble device brand as a whole and the Time 2 and Core in particular are dead and buried now.

Our original story is below.

Pebble’s creative and commercial struggles have been obvious since last year’s introduction of the Time family, its money problems deepened early this year, and unfortunately for the smartwatch pioneer, your nearly $13 million pledged in total on Kickstarter for three new wearable products couldn’t prevent a forced bargain sale to Fitbit.

While not yet confirmed, the deal will almost certainly be announced soon, and unless Pebble can find another miraculous survival solution, it should also close relatively quickly. Fresh inside information suggests software “assets” are at the core of the corporate takeover, with hardware development likely to come to an end.

Not only are future Pebble devices improbable, but the Kickstarter-funded Time 2 and Core may never see daylight either, with supporters of course due full refunds. The Pebble 2 has already started shipping, though its own cancellation is also still possible, with no further units heading out for early adopters.

Existing product inventory and server equipment might be sold off separately if Fitbit shows no last-minute interest, the “less than $40 million” currently set aside for the acquisition merely covering the Pebble watch’s operating system, apps and cloud services. No debt or other “obligations” either.

The global wearable market leader is rumored to be going after smartwatch king Apple more aggressively with this purchase. To achieve its increasingly ambitious goals, the San Francisco-based fitness tech specialist may also take on the bulk of Pebble’s software engineers, “very few” interface designers, but no hardware employees whatsoever.

What could the FitBit/Pebble deal ultimately mean?

I think I owe you all an apology. Unfortunately, a few months back, (actually about a year and a half or more) I wasn’t thinking clearly, and I accidentally bought a Pebble Time. It was so stupid! I mean, I know I have a habit of jinxing platforms, but it was just so awesome, well, I just couldn’t help myself. And I’m very, very sorry. I’ll just go ahead and hang up my Pebble next to my Pre 3 and Nokia 920 in my killed platform trophy case and light a candle.

Pebble Time SteelOk seriously, it’s not necessarily all that bad. Of course, by now most of us have heard rumors of Pebble being bought by FitBit. Some of those rumors indicate that this is an intellectual property-only purchase meaning that Pebble is going the way of Palm before it, and in much the same way, only far, far cheaper. But these are still rumors for now, so there’s no need to push the panic button just yet. But I wanted to take a look, along with fellow Pebble enthusiast Juan Carlos Bagnell, at what this could mean going forward.

What’s next?

Here are Juan’s thoughts:

If Pebble is allowed to operate as a unique division of FitBit (BIG MASSIVE IF), this could be a terrific move for the company. No other smartwatch manufacturer has quite nailed the daily lifestyle experience of a daylight readable gadget that also lasts for almost a week on a charge. Having access to better fitness tracking software and tying into the FitBit hardware ecosystem could be an exciting transition for fans of the brand. The only concerns now, what might this mean for Time 2 pre-orders (mine included) which have yet to ship?

This is a remarkably positive view of the situation, and one that makes a lot of sense. That’s why we loves us some Juan. Some rumors have indicated that Pebble will basically be killed off, but let’s examine Juan’s thoughts just in case that big massive if comes into play, or if this leads to a FitBit that could rightly be called a smartwatch.

Pebble Time Review 2Activity tracking is not enough

See, in my world, fitness trackers have basically zero place in my life. They should, don’t get me wrong, but my level of activity isn’t consistent such that I need to track it on a daily basis. Yes, I do go for 10 mile hikes, and 40 mile bike rides. During the summer, I average 15 miles per day on my bike.0 But the rest of the time, I’m not active enough to meet daily goals. I’m not an exercise guy. Which is why I’m fat. Nice how that works out, isn’t it? At the same time, I’ve used devices like the Moto 360 and Moto 360 Sport, which track your activity, but also function as a smartwatch. I’m not interested in a FitBit, but I might be if it was a full and complete smartwatch, like the Pebble Time.

In that sense, this is a great direction for the Pebble legacy. Bringing a fully functioning smartwatch to an activity tracker might attract folks like me who want a smartwatch, but not necessarily a stand alone fitness tracker. I’m convinced more of us are out there.

pebble_time01The sad grab

But, if this is just a property grab, this smacks of a Palm 2.0, but a couple of billion dollars cheaper. I personally think the Pebble brand will be killed, but what I can’t figure out is why FitBit would pay 40 million dollars to do it. Maybe the answer lies somewhere between Juan and my thoughts. That being the case, I will mourn for Pebble, because Pebble brought smartwatch awareness to the masses. Pebble arguably is the reason why I’m wearing a Moto 360 Sport today, and why the Apple Watch exists.

Ultimately, Pebble couldn’t compete with Apple and Google. But, let’s face it, very few companies can. Which is why Pebble’s days were numbered when Google announced Android Wear. Android Wear and Watch OS are just too beautiful to compete, no matter how awesome the Star Trek face looks on the Pebble Time. The hammer hasn’t fallen yet though, so there is some amount of hope. But, to be perfectly honest, if not FitBit today, it’ll be someone else tomorrow.

Probably the worst part about this (still unconfirmed) news is that if Pebble can’t make it against Google and Apple, then who can? Pebble was the first significant presence on the market, and if it doesn’t have the staying power and following to fight off the Apple Watch and Android Wear, then it seems very likely that Apple and Google will further define where the wearable industry goes. In other words, you better be happy with what Apple and Google are doing, because it looks like they’re the only ones that are going to be doing it in the future.

In memoriam?

Here’s hoping those preorders of the Time 2 do indeed ship. It would be a fitting end to a company that built a category of technology that we all love today and while the final nail isn’t anywhere near the coffin just yet, I would like to say, “So long, Pebble. And thanks for all the fish.”

OnePlus Issues and Company Responses

one-plus-3t-review-780

OnePlus 3T touch latency is a hot topic, but is it being blown out of proportion (partly by us)? If it is an issue, OnePlus claims they’ll fix it after they release Nougat updates. That Nougat update is currently an open BETA for folks who want to give it a spin.

Will these fixes and updates arrive in a timely fashion? Previous issues like RAM management and display accuracy point to fast fixes.

The Information: Fitbit may buy Pebble

Fitness tech company Fitbit is said to be close to buying smartwatch-maker Pebble “for a small amount,” The Information reports.

The Kickstarter maven company, which launched several of its Pebble Watches on the crowdfunding site to major successes, has been ailing financially and was looking to sell. It reportedly laid off a quarter of its workforce in March.

Fitbit, comparatively a legacy company in the wearables field, has been in good health as of late. It acquired assets of Coin, a smart credit card maker. A constant worry for the company is keeping its customers engaged and committed to using its fitness product — if you’ve tracked gym memberships from January to March, you’ll see how retainment rates aren’t that stellar.

With Pebble getting itself into the health tracking business with the heart rate-monitoring Pebble Core, Fitbit may have found the impetus to move on the company.

Pebble just might get it after all

Several days ago I stepped into the Pocketnow family with a heartfelt piece on Pebble and how I thought that their future might be a little murky. Despite my intense love for the simplistic wearables that arguably kicked off the trend, I truly feared that the “big dogs” in the industry would end up forcing this scrappy underdog out on their keasters.
