RIP Pebble and Apple’s business post iPhone | #PNWeekly 230

It’s come to this. The end of Pebble. Juan’s favorite smartwatch has shuffled off its mortal coil. As despondent as he is, the industry must move on, as must the discussion of wearable technology. Where do we go from here? Also, is Apple to reliant on phones for profit? Yes. Yes they are. What might be the solution for generating shareholder value in an era of smartphone saturation? We don’t know, but we’re going to talk about it.

American-Candian dating app, Maple Match, nigh doubled in user base last night

The 45th President-Elect of the United States is Donald Trump. Regardless of what you think of him, one thing is for sure: some people just want out.

But with the masses clogging Immigration Canada’s website to the crashing point and waves of loneliness (in more ways than one) suddenly sweeping the land of the free and the home of the brave, it seems that one enterprising 25-year-old from Austin, Texas, had the right idea for people under the sway of despair.

The idea is an app called Maple Match. Yes, it’s a dating app. It aims to pair a Canadian citizen with an American one in romantic union with the goal of having that American citizen naturalize in Canada and gain permanent residence status. You know, to avoid whatever happens as the Trump administration’s policies are enacted.

It’s been in beta tests since May and officially only went into service on iOS on November 5. And the big reason why it’s in the news today is because its servers, like Immigration Canada’s, were bombarded.

Around the launch of the beta, hundreds of users every hour signed up for the service. We don’t know how much “almost double” means for Maple Match, but we’d like to find out.

There is no ETA on an Android app just yet.
