Iffy HTC U12+ box leak seems convincing enough

Far from perfect, the box design just seems a bit mangled and weird to us. But it has its heart in the right place... if you can call getting most of the items seemingly right.

The penultimate HTC 10 leak

Many in the mobile tech media ranks have admitted to being at least a little excited for the HTC 10. In the 36 hours or so before the Taiwanese manufacturer officially launches the new Android phone, there’s been no need to struggle through the pre-event ennui, much less to say the

Was the HTC ultrapixel the right way to go all along?

HTC started something a few years ago that was, perhaps unfortunately, laughed off of not one, but two stages. The HTC One M7 and One M8 both featured rear-firing cameras packing “Ultra pixels” which were pixels on the camera sensor that were 2.0 µm in size – generally four times larger than standard pixels of the day. The problem that HTC ran into was the inability to pack more than 4 of these “ultrapixels” (well, technically four million) into the camera module in its flagship while other Android phones were playing in the 12-20 megapixel space. We’re not here to spark ...

HTC One M10 rumor roundup: everything’s subject to change

Welcome to the HTC One M1-whoops, sorry about that. I think one of our rumors dispels that name. Anyways, what we know about this device, codenamed “Perfume,” is that it’s … well, uh… kinda. Y’know. That it’s … the Taiwanese manufacturer’s flagship smartphone for the spring of this year. And that’s about it.Let’s just get to it.The Time and The PlaceThese two factors, as rumored, will ...

HTC One A9 leaked as mid-ranger with Snapdragon 617, not Helio X20

The slow burn and churn at HTC has produced a series of rather disappointing results seemingly for both the consumer and, as the effect to the cause, the company itself. This so-called “Aero” project that CEO Cher Wang has been touting as the autumn “hero” (no, not that Hero) to save the Taiwanese OEM from ...

Mobile photography as art: an interview with the MPA’s Daniel Berman

Image credit, left to right: John Gamble; Clay Butch Benskin; Helen Breznik • Since its invention, photography has gone from being a complex craft mastered only by experienced professionals to being easily accessible to all. Pretty much everyone these days carries a smartphone in their pocket, with an always ready-for-action camera. The rise of mobile photography and the ability to shoot and share instantaneously has revolutionized the field and created what has been called a ‘democratization of photography’. While many are still wondering about the possible implications of ...

HTC One M8 (2014) review: an elegant smartphone for a more civilized age

The down side to success is the pressure to keep on succeeding. HTC’s 2013 flagship, the original HTC One (M7), defined “successful” in nearly every way. We awarded it one of the highest review scores we’d ever bestowed on a smartphone, a reception mirrored by most of the tech community. “Bravo HTC,” we said of its stellar industrial design and innovative new features. Our opinion stayed

HTC One Camera Feature Tour: Everything You Need To Know (Video)

About this time last year, we shot a video called How To Take Great Photos with the Samsung Galaxy S III. It’s very much an artifact of yesteryear, with a fifty-second intro, hazy interlacing, and one the worst haircuts in my personal history, but people seemed to enjoy it. So much so that when the Galaxy S III’s successor dropped just a few weeks back, we followed up our full ...

HTC One vs HTC Droid DNA (Video)

The HTC Droid DNA bears a confused and somewhat tragic legacy. Born of Verizon’s desire for an “ultimate Droid,” the device represented far more than a retooled HTC Butterfly when it was announced at a New York City event last November. Back then, the Droid DNA was the first -and the only- 1080p smartphone to hit the United States, and the first device to adopt a five-inch display while rejecting the burdensome “phablet” moniker. The Droid DNA could have been a superstar, but -

UltraPixel vs Megapixel: HTC One & HTC Droid DNA Camera Shoot-Out

The HTC One, as we mentioned in yesterday’s unboxing and hardware tour, is a crucial device for the Taiwanese smartphone maker. The company’s brand has suffered a steady decline since its heyday of the last decade, and HTC is -for the second year in a row- banking on a device titled the “One” to save it from the increasing pressure of the competition. The One of 2013 is similar to last year’s

Megapixels Are Overrated: All We Want Is Awesome Image Quality

I can’t begin to count the number of times I have taken a picture with my smartphone and thought, “Man that looks great!” Only a handful of times, however, has the quality of a photo taken with a phone’s camera served as passable when viewed at full size. To date, I can recall no more than a dozen pictures that are really worth keeping, based on quality (not sentimental value). By that, I mean only an extremely small percentage of the pictures I take with my smartphones end up as wallpapers on my laptop or get more use than sharing once and discarding. But that ...

Are Ultrapixels the Future of Mobile Photography or Just Marketing Buzz Words?

Camera quality is just one of the many metrics we use to gauge the overall capacity of a smartphone. Alongside performance, battery life, display quality, storage capacity, memory and a host of connectivity and sensors, the camera is one of the more important qualities of a smartphone. Specifications and performance are quickly approaching a threshold where reasonable and modest have been replaced with exceptional and excessive … in a good way. Only two areas are in dire need of improvement: battery life and image sensing. Battery life has met its fair share of hurdles over the years. ...
