Upcoming Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom revealed to feature dual rear cam, huge 5000mAh battery

While we certainly hoped we’d ultimately find out a bit more about the “Zennovation” star of next month’s CES 2017, China’s Tenaa and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group have just unveiled inside information on the Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.

Yes, even that product name is already confirmed as part of regulatory Bluetooth SIG documents published the other day. Plus, a Z01HDA model number, and alternative ZE553KL designation. That’s awfully close to ZenFone 3 Max’s ZC553KL denomination, and the two are actually quite similar as far as external designs go.

But somehow, the soon-to-be-released ZenFone 3 Zoom squeezes a gigantic battery with a capacity of around 5,000 mAh (“just” 4,850, according to the Chinese FCC equivalent) into a 170-gram, 8mm-slim metallic package.

That sounds like a breathtaking engineering feat (if it pans out), given the comparatively small 4,100 mAh cell under ZenFone 3 Max’s hood, and the super-chunky body of the original 5,000 mAh juicer-hauling Asus ZenFone Max.

But wait, there’s more. This “most creative” ever ZenFone will apparently have a dual rear-facing camera setup going for it too, as well as up to 4GB RAM, and sadly, a middling octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor replacing the ultra-high-end SD835 we know you were all so badly craving.

Back to the trendy dual main shooter expected to grace ZenFone 3 Zoom’s elegant behind, this may sport 12.2 and 13MP sensors, sitting flush with the rest of the chassis instead of forming an unpleasant bulge.

Asus heads to CES 2017 for cryptic ‘Zennovation’ event possibly starring Snapdragon 835 phone

Let the CES 2017 teasing games begin. Xiaomi actually got the ball rolling by saying “hello Vegas” a couple of weeks back in anticipation of a mysterious “all-new” global product launch, and now Asus follows suit with a similarly cryptic “Zennovation” invite and countdown webpage.

We’re a little over 27 days away from a January 4 press event happening at the Caesars Palace in Vegas, where the media will “experience” the multitasking Taiwanese company’s “latest innovations that will expand your vision and stretch the imagination.”

In addition to the more than obvious Zen clue regarding the branding of these fast-approaching “innovative” new Asus devices, we’re also told to expect Qualcomm Snapdragon processing power inside.

It’s hard not to jump to conclusions and hope for the best, dreaming of an extremely early Snapdragon 835-packing ZenFone 4 announcement, but let’s keep in mind there are many other chips included in QCM’s industry-leading roster.

The ZenFone 3, as well as its numerous derivations, are also far too young to already prompt sequels, though the ZenFone Zoom isn’t. The photography-focused 5.5-incher was in fact unveiled at the previous Consumer Electronics Show before launching stateside at $400, and a follow-up effort should be right around the corner. With even greater optical zoom, presumably, and perhaps SD835 muscle after all.

Newegg jumps on Black Friday preview bandwagon with a number of enticing mobile deals

Not a big fan of computer hardware and software anymore? Not a problem, as Newegg also sells smartphones, tablets and intelligent wearable products at pretty great prices these days. More so around the holidays, of course, with the e-tailer’s Black Friday 2016 deal extravaganza detailed on the heels of similar Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target and Staples reveals.

Interested in a $250 ZTE Axon 7 Mini, $180 Asus ZenFone 3 Laser or perhaps an age-old, never-cheaper $180 32GB Apple iPad 4, but not really looking forward to spend the day (or night) after Thanksgiving furiously refreshing Newegg’s overloaded home webpage?

No need to wait so very long, as discounts will in fact be valid from next Monday, November 21, all the way through Saturday, November 26, at 11:59 pm PT. Quantities are obviously limited, though, and “subject to availability”, so be sure you check the Huawei Watch at $200 and up, or $220 ZTE Axon Pro off your shopping list as early as possible.

Windows convertible enthusiasts can opt for a $799 Microsoft Surface Pro 4 with Core i5, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD or $470 i5 Surface Pro 3, while cash-strapped Android phone buyers have a $150 non-Pro original Axon and $200 Asus ZenFone Zoom to compare and contrast. Last but not least, the $350 Honor 8 will apparently come bearing “exclusive gifts.”

Better late than never: Asus ZenFone Zoom and Selfie score Marshmallow goodies

From the get-go, it seemed unwise of Asus to flood the value-focused smartphone market with more ZenFone 2 derivations than you can count on the fingers of one hand. It wasn’t only absurdly confusing, also unnecessarily complicating the family’s software updating process.Instead of sending Android 6.0 Marshmallow for one or two models, Asus has over half a dozen 2015 ZenFones to stabilize and optimize, of which the Max and ...

Expect a bunch of Marshmallow updates to roll out to Asus phones in Q2

When Asus publicly tackled names of devices with Android 6.0 on the way and update timelines for the first time, it forgot two crucial things that greatly displeased ZenFone and ZenPad owners. Specifically, no actual schedule was announced, and both seasoned veterans and promising rookies were excluded from the list. But now, the Marshmallow-ready roster has grown by a couple, and more importantly, we have a (vague) deadline to look forward to. Unfortunately, you still need to wait until at least April to ...

Asus ZenFone Zoom Review: The smartphone camera to beat?

We don’t see “experiment phones” as often as we used to. Smartphone design is largely homogenizing around a limited range of design options and aesthetics. Whenever a company takes a risk, targets a specific niche, it’s always exciting to see what might arrive. Asus is doing just that for the camera crowd, building a phone around one specific feature. This isn’t just a “camera phone”, the clue to their targeted demographic is in the name of the device.Immediately we can drop any pretense of this being an “all rounder” phone, but who is this device actually for? Does the ...

Asus ZenFone Zoom real camera review: attack of the zoom? (Video)

The Asus ZenFone Zoom is a smartphone built around one specific feature. No. Not the camera. The phone’s name is a dead giveaway. This device is built around the zoom on the camera. We’re talking niche of a niche, as we’ve seen camera focused phones before, but few with this kind of optical hardware capability, and none in recent memory which didn’t have a telescoping lens popping out of the back of the phone. It’s an audacious experiment to be sure, one which Asus should be ...

24 hours with the ASUS ZenFone Zoom

You only get one chance to make a good first impression. It’s a strategy we’ve seen before. If you want some headlines and media coverage, design a phone around one specific feature. ASUS is following in the footsteps like of devices like the Lumia 1020 and

ASUS ZenFone Zoom unboxing and first impressions

In the world of smartphones, most manufacturers produce “all rounder” gadgets with feature sets designed to be accessible to a wide majority of consumers. It’s always exciting when a company experiments with a smartphone built around one specific feature or designed for one niche demographic. Smartphone camera debates can be visceral, but Asus thinks they have a killer feature which we haven’t seen in such a slim form factor:

Asus ZenFone Zoom finally launched stateside at $400

It was one of the most interesting Android devices unveiled at CES 2015 (yes, 2015), at least as far as shutterbugs were concerned, but for reasons we never could fully understand, it was held off until IFA, then teased all over again, and ultimately slated for a long overdue “early February” 2016 release. This time, Asus made good ...

ASUS teases ZenFone Zoom’s camera tech as we patiently await its release

Where the heck is the ASUS ZenFone Zoom? Right now the crew at Pocketnow is well into getting ready for the CES 2016 trade show in early January, where we expect to see all manner of cutting-edge hardware. Back at the 2015 show, that lineup included the ASUS ZenFone Zoom, marrying a 13MP camera with an optical zoom lens – an outright rarity in the smartphone world. Sales were supposed to get underway later in Q1, but that never happened.

ASUS ZenFone Zoom hands-on: the power of optical zoom (Video)

Is Android ever going to get its own Lumia 1020? Windows Phone may get a lot of flack for the size of its user base, and the dearth of phone options available, but fans of the platform still have a few big wins they can hold over the heads of users of other platforms, and when it comes to cameras with megapixels to spare, there are few that can hold a candle to the 1020. Well, if you’re looking for that 41MP camera, you can keep right on waiting, but at IFA this week we went hands-on with a phone that’s at least superficially similar (minor victories, we know) to the 1020 with ...

ASUS ZenFone Zoom and ZenFone Max coming at IFA, 6-7 ZenFones next year

The ASUS ZenFone 2 is a phone to definitely keep on your shortlist if you’re looking for a new device. It impressed us with the occasion of our review, and, if you’re lucky enough to live in specific markets, you can also get a special edition which packs a whopping 256GB of internal storage. The company is preparing to capitalize on the success of (and buzz around) its ZenFone line-up, and will prepare no less ...
