CES 2015: Everything we got to see at this year’s show

Another year, another International Consumer Electronics Show behind us. Was 2015’s one that will go down as a banner year in the annals of history? We didn’t see any huge show-stopping announcements, nor surprise reveals of everyone’s-talking-about-it hardware, but the show we did see unfold over the course of last week was still a totally solid offering, packed with lots of great phones, tablets, wearables, and accessories that all came together to place us on some solid footing as we get ready for the rest of this quarter’s launches. As we start thinking about

CES 2015 is just days away, but some manufacturers simply can’t wait to get news of their latest products out there. We already told you about the latest announcements from Alcatel Onetouch, hoping to beat the CES rush, and now we’ve got one from Archos, as it reveals its 50 Diamond smartphone and 80b Helium 4G tablet. The Diamond is a five-inch 1080p handset powered by a Snapdragon 615 SoC. It’s got 2GB of RAM, 16GB storage (though with support for microSD expansion), and can ...

Archos goes after the VR-curious with budget-priced VR Glasses

Earlier this week we took a look at one of the latest virtual reality accessories to launch for smartphones, the VR One from Carl Zeiss. It looked a bit like the Samsung Gear VR, what with its strap for head-mounted operation, but sounded more like another Google Cardboard, dialing back on the custom software and hardware – though that also meant a much lower price point ...

Should this Archos phablet count as having “rear mounted buttons?”

With last year’s G2, LG managed to turn a few heads. Sure, the phone had its issues, but looking just at its design, there was a lot to be pleased with: we saw that incredibly narrow side bezel, and LG experimented with moving the handset’s power and volume buttons to the middle of its back. We’ve seen that rear-mounted button business return for the G Flex and the G2 Mini, and we’ll no doubt be running into it again in the future. ...

Here’s what “water resistant” and “water proof” really mean

“Water proof” and “water resistant” mean the same thing, right? Apparently that’s what Archos CEO Loic Poirier thought — he was wrong. Poirier was happily showing off his new phone — a Quechua — which is advertised to French hikers and mountain bikers. He tossed it on the floor. No problem! Then, with cameras rolling, he found a glass jar, dropped the phone in, and started to fill it up with water. The phone is rated at IP54 and advertised as being ...

CES 2014: our coverage from start to finish

For all the months we spend looking forward to the CES, thinking about which devices we might see, and planning whose booth we’re going to hit first, it sure can go by in a flash. Sure, it doesn’t seem like it when you’re in the thick of things, but looking back on it now, just a week later, it’s already starting to seem like a distant memory. Part of that has to be due to just how close we are to MWC, and how quickly we have to transition back into that building-up role ...

Pocketnow Weekly 077: countdown to CES 2014!

Technology trade shows are often a breeding ground for plague and disease, so here at Pocketnow we opted to inoculate ourselves early … by picking up some crazy wintertime head colds just days before flying to Vegas for the 2014 International CES. That’s right: on the first podcast of the year, all three of your humble hosts are suffering from respiratory distress and an overabundance of mucus, all of it glazed over with enough combined medication to drop a Snapdragon dead in its tracks. Or something. On the ...

Archos launches pair of Helium Androids, and one’s not awful

Archos got us started with announcements of CES products super early, and we brought you news of all its Connected Home and Connected Self stuff – including a smartwatch – back at the start of the week. Today we see it follow those up with a couple new smartphones, and at least one of them might be worth giving a second look. The two are the Archos 50 and 45 Helium 4G, both running the same Snapdragon 400 you’ll find in the Moto G, but at a slightly higher 1.4GHz clock. The 50 has a five-inch 720p display, 8GB ...

Archos prepares connected devices, wearables for CES exhibition

CES-time means product announcements galore – and while you may have your interests firmly focused on a few big manufacturers, there are going to be dozens and dozens more hawking their wares. That spells plenty of announcements from companies that don’t generally dominate our coverage; bringing along a whole slew of new products to introduce – even in the absence of any singular hot-button item – can go a long way towards catching our attention. We’re looking at one of these players at the periphery today, as

Archos tablets hands-on (Video)

Saying that Archos sells a number of different tablets is like saying that Crayola makes a few crayon colors; for a manufacturer without the brand recognition of a Samsung, Archos manages to put out an impressive variety of tablets, in all the different sizes, colors, and price ranges you could hope for. We already showed you one of the company’s 2013 smartphones, and now we switch gears for a moment to dive into the array of tablets Archos brought along to the IFA this year. First, there’s the Chef Pad, one ...

Archos 53 Platinum hands-on (Video)

One nice thing about events like the IFA is that they give us the chance to go hands-on with phones we might have heard about already, but haven’t yet had the chance to interact with ourselves. That’s the case with Archos and its 53 Platinum, an Android smartphone the company announced back in April. Along with the 35 Carbon and 50 Platinum, the 53 was also crazy cheap, with a list price of only $250. Is it going to come across as a cheaply made phone, or would we be impressed by the build quality? We ...

Archos Announces Three Super-Cheap Androids, Ranging $100-$250

If there’s one thing we know Archos for, it’s that it makes some of the most affordable Android hardware around. So far, we’ve seen it come up with a whole bunch of cheap tablets. The problem is, there’s already so much competition from models like the Nexus 7 and various Kindle Fires that the middling specs of these tablets just couldn’t win us over, even with their great prices. Could Archos find better luck with super-cheap Android ...
