Samsung, Google, HTC, Oculus, Sony and Acer join hands to form Global Virtual Reality Association

They may routinely sue and countersue one another on often frivolous copyright infringement matters, they’ll occasionally exchange humorous jabs in advertising campaigns too, but at the end of the day, many of the tech industry’s veterans, pioneers and leaders can find some common ground to sometimes build alliances on.

When it serves a greater purposes, that is, like the promotion of “responsible development and adoption of VR globally.” The market’s strong fledgling aspect and its virtually limitless potential certainly helped Samsung, Google, HTC Vive, Facebook’s Oculus, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and Acer Starbreeze tame their egos and agree to follow a set of shared guidelines.

In the years to come, as virtual reality hardware and software hopefully moves forward and forward, the Global Virtual Reality Association (GVRA) aims to “bring the international VR community together.” Created as a “resource for consumers, policymakers, and industries interested in VR”, this will see its illustrious members “develop and share best practices, conduct research, and foster dialogue between public and private stakeholders around the world.”

Of course, everyone will still do its own thing, separately marketing existing and future Gear VR, Daydream View, Vive, Rift, PlayStation VR and StarVR products. But at least on paper, all of the aforementioned together hope to “change the landscape of education, training, healthcare and design” for years, nay, decades ahead.

Samsung’s free Gear VR brings out all the feels in effective new holiday ad

Once again, Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge buyers across essentially all authorized US retailers will be eligible for a free Gear VR headset and Oculus “content bonus”, normally worth a combined $150, as long as they get their phones between November 24 and 28, and remember to claim the holiday gifts by December 12.

Reluctant to pick up the bundle for a loved one this gift-giving season, as you’re not exactly sure about the mass appeal of virtual reality technology yet? Perhaps Samsung’s latest commercial, suggestively titled “Unwrap the Feels”, can put you at ease, starring a diverse group of young and old people, men, women and teenagers, all having a pretty awesome time with the GS7/Gear VR duo.

They’ll be frightened, amazed, surprised and confused, entertained and just all-out immersed in their own personal parallel universe, sometimes all at once, but they will absolutely not be bored or disappointed by another uninspired Christmas present.

Of course, the question is what happens when the novelty wears off? Worst case scenario, they (or you) will still own one of the world’s best all-around smartphones, having experienced some jolly good fun for no extra charge with a headset that’s supposed to get better in time anyway, as Oculus develops new “feel-unwrapping” VR content.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 headline Target’s massive list of Black Friday deals

Following in an arch-rival’s footsteps, America’s second-largest discount retailer has just willingly unveiled its fast-approaching Black Friday 2016 deal bonanza, and while we can’t help but notice a few similarities to what Staples has in the pipeline, Target will cater to a much wider range of bargain hunters.

Without further ado, we’d like to direct your attention to several mobile and wearable must-buys available at their lowest prices in deeply limited quantities starting Thanksgiving Day.

Target lends Samsung a hand with its Note 7 recovery efforts by shining the spotlight on the Korean company’s top replacements. Both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge activated on Verizon, AT&T or Sprint are to hook you up with free $250 gift cards, Gear VR headsets, and $50 worth of Oculus content.

Meanwhile, the hot new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus on the same three carriers will net you “just” complimentary $250 coupons, though you’ll be able to save good money on some other Apple products too.

Namely, the iPad mini 2, Air 2, Pro 9.7, all Apple TV models still around, Apple Watch Series 1, and yes, even the Series 2. If you want a cheaper wearable, look for the $50 Garmin Vivofit Jr., $60 Vivofit 3, $120 Vivosmart HR+, $90 Fitbit Charge HR, $100 Alta, or $130 Charge 2. Last but not least, don’t forget about obligatory markdowns on latest-generation Chromecast and Fire TV Stick media streamers.
