Anyone here nostalgic about a 2013 mid-range Samsung phone by the name of Galaxy Amp? Did you at least know such a thing existed?Well, if you did, and you were waiting for an affordable upgrade or two, prepaid US carrier Cricket Wireless serves up the Galaxy Amp Prime and Amp 2 in online and offline stores starting today. Cricket Wireless picks up lackluster $90 LG Spree with Android 5.1

Not to be outdone by Samsung, which just brought 2010 mobile technology back with the Galaxy J1 mini, LG is only 24 hours away from releasing a similarly shoddy low-end Android effort on American prepaid network Cricket.AT&T’s daughter carrier tries hard to sell the LG Spree as a “great phone for those who currently own an entry-level smartphone and aspire for more without sacrificing style and features”, but the fact of the matter is the 4.5-incher lacks both things.Style? Please, this is a ...

Cricket picks up the very affordable ZTE Grand X 3 from CES

CES 2016 may not have given us much in the way of high-end, really appealing flagship devices, but for manufacturers looking to flesh out their lineups with some new affordable options, there were plenty of opportunities to showcase new gear. ZTE did just that with some of its new offerings, bringing out both the Avid Plus and Grand X 3. Today we’re taking a closer look at the latter as Cricket begins sales. When we checked in with the Grand X 3 back at CES, official carrier pricing wasn’t ...

Cricket drops no-contract Moto E price to $10, HTC Desire 520 to $20, Lumia 640 to $60

Compelling smartphone deals have stopped being a holiday-only affair a long time ago, but it’s a known fact January tends to be the slowest month of the year in terms of gadget sales, due among others to a proverbial stubbornness to not cut prices from manufacturers and retailers. When the occasional steal does crop up shortly after Christmas, it’s obviously wise to jump on it before it expires or inventory runs out. Case in point, Cricket’s latest batch of discounted prepaid handhelds, starting as low as $10, no contracts needed, no strings attached.Well, there is one string ...

Black Friday 2015 deal roundup: cheap phones, tablets, and wearables for all

Purchasing mobile gear of any kind around Turkey Day is always wise. Waiting until the last minute to score the best possible Black Friday deals is the complete opposite. Granted, the temptation may feel irresistible, but unless you want to risk getting body slammed by a fellow desperate bargain hunter for that coveted final discounted Apple Watch, it’s good to know beforehand what to expect from every retailer and how to avoid the holiday shopping frenzy.Luckily, many electronics merchants, actual device manufacturers and carriers included, have either already kicked off early Black ...

Cricket inaugurates holiday shopping season early with a handful of free phones

AT&T prepaid subsidiary Cricket Wireless has gained a reputation as one of the most generous US mobile carriers in recent years, often “selling” decent phones for free despite not demanding a contractual obligation.Naturally, the small operator’s holiday deals are always a sight to behold, this year letting you score no less than four Android and Windows handhelds sans upfront charges, as well as two more at deeply discounted prices. Now, granted, Christmas is still over a month away, and even Thanksgiving Day feels like a sweet but distant dream. You needn’t worry however, as ...

Cricket welcomes Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3, upgrades plans with free North American data roaming

Alcatel Onetouch may not be on your mental short list of companies to turn to when looking for a nice budget-priced smartphone, but based on our positive experiences with the company’s Idol 3 earlier this year, maybe it should be. We saw direct sales of the 5.5-inch model get started back in the spring, and then in August saw those joined by sales of a more petite 4.7-inch model. Ordering your phone independently of ...

How to be happy with a cell carrier contract

Adam Doud propped some major points against buying a new phone with your carrier in this weekend’s debate post. If you haven’t taken a look at his post, please do so to grab some context. But at this point, I think it’s time for some B sides to this discussion. Not only a counterargument, but a hybrid proposal that could break your perception of the usefulness of a contract. No contract, but no credit

HTC introduces new mid-range Desire 520, Desire 526, and Desire 626

For the middle of summer, a time when we’re used to seeing a lull in the smartphone market as manufacturers gear up for their big fall launches, this week sure is proving to be full of some interesting launch events. Yesterday brought us not just the Samsung Galaxy A8, but also ZTE’s affordable Axon flagship. Today we’re back to looking at the mid-range market as we check out a trio of new Desire models from HTC, with ...

ZTE brings new phones to AT&T, Cricket Wireless

It’s not all that often that we see phones from Asian manufacturers make their way over to the United States. Some companies – like OPPO, for example – have been really good about making their phones available across the pond soon after they launch in Asia, while a majority of devices never make it out of their country of origin. So imagine our excitement when we see not one, but two phones from ZTE make their way to AT&T and an MVNO carrier, the ZTE Maven and the ZTE Sonata 2.The ZTE Maven is ...

ZTE announces the enormous Grand X Max+ for Cricket Wireless

Many people, when going smartphone shopping, just want something that’s cheap and is on a decent rate plan. In the United States, it’s not that simple to work this combo out with ease and still get a phone that’s workable, but the newly-announced ZTE Grand X Max+ on AT&T MVNO Cricket Wireless could change this. The phone packs a massive 6-inch HD screen with an HD (1280×720) resolution, a 13MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facer, a 3,200 mAh battery (that’s the benefit of having such a massive phone), Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, ...

ZTE announces budget-priced Grand X Max phablet

With the successful launch of the iPhone 6 Plus last month, not to mention the Galaxy Note 4, manufacturers have gotten their latest doses of confirmation that the smartphone-buying public continues to be enamored by larger-screened devices. But as we know all too well from experience, larger screens can also mean higher prices: while the latest Galaxy S model may sell on-contract for $200, the season’s new Note regularly ...

T-Mobile, Cricket get ready to welcome Lumia 530 to the US

Summer already seems like a distant memory at this point, and the smartphones it brought us have started to be eclipsed by new models, like the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, and now all this Nexus 6 talk. But some of those summer launches have been taking their sweet time getting here, and we’re only now starting to see their availability come to carriers in the States. Back in July, Microsoft announced the Nokia Lumia 530, the ...
