Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Nokia Lumia 920 (Video)

It is here, and it is awesome. That’s a little spoiler about our forthcoming Nokia Lumia 1020 review, which we haven’t had quite enough time to write just yet. But that doesn’t mean you should be deprived of Nokia Lumia 1020 hotness on this bright and beautiful pre-launch Wednesday, now does it? That’s the spirit! What follows is an in-depth comparison video documenting the similarities and differences between Nokia’s 2012 and 2013 flagship Windows Phones. We’ll talk housing humps, design disparities, and just how big the gulf really is between 8.7 and ...

The Lumia 1020 isn’t “cool” enough for me

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is the most advanced camera phone ever to see the light of day. It’s a stunning upgrade to the Lumia 920 and a fitting sequel to the 808 PureView, one whose potential has been met with fairly universal praise from the Pocketnow team, and from most others in the blogosphere. When it launches on ...

Nokia Pro Camera coming to Lumia 920, 925, and 928

The 41-megapixel sensor, Zeiss lens, and the overall hardware construction of the imaging system is just part of the picture snapping capabilities on the new Nokia Lumia 1020. A huge part is played by the Nokia Pro camera, bundled out of the box with the Lumia 1020, just like the Nokia Smart Cam comes with the Lumia 925. Allowing you to manually tweak most of the settings to achieve the best looking stills, the Nokia Pro Camera app will also arrive to other Lumia phones later this year. Official ...

Nokia Lumia 1020 vs. Nokia Lumia 920 (Video)

In this video we’re going to make a quick comparison between the new Nokia Lumia 1020 and Nokia’s previous flagship; the Lumia 920. The Lumia 1020 actually feels lighter and thinner.  Both have very similar shapes, though the Lumia 1020 has a larger circular protrusion for the amazing 41 megapixel camera.  The 920 has an LCD screen while the new 1020 has an OLED HD+ screen.  Unfortunately, our 920 was having a bad day so we couldn’t show you the screen differences, but we’ll try to remedy that as soon as possible.  The 920 also has wireless charging built in ...

Pocketnow Weekly 052: ’twas the day before the Lumia

It’s not every day you schedule a podcast the day before one of the biggest Windows Phone announcements in the platform’s history – but given our plans to host a special-edition Pocketnow Live event covering Nokia’s NYC event tomorrow, we thought it best to get the Weekly out of the way ahead of time. That doesn’t mean we don’t talk Nokia – indeed, we’ve got Chief News Editor Stephen Schenck on the air with us this week to discuss what it’s been like to follow the story of the EOS/1020/909, probably one of the most widely-leaked devices ...

After eight months, the Lumia 920 camera is still my favorite vacation companion

As you’ve probably heard, we’ve got some Nokia news to look forward to this week. If the rumors and leaks are to be believed, the company is gearing up to drop quite a smartphone on the world come Thursday – and whether it’s called the EOS, 909, 1020, or something else, it’s a safe bet its name won’t be the big story. Taking center stage will most likely be its super-sized camera module, which at an assumed 41MP seems guaranteed to blow the pants off every other device ...

How vacation technology can make life easier and more challenging

Ahh vacation. A chance to unwind. Recharge the batteries. Travel across the country seeing great things and meeting great people. I once heard that a vacation pays for itself before you even get on the plane. And it’s so true. It’s just one of those times that everything becomes so easy, laid back, and overall just awesome. Vacation technology is here to make things even more awesome…and more complicated. Here’s a few things I learned about travel vs. ...

Lumia Amber update coming to Nokia phones this August

The Nokia Lumia 925 which we reviewed is running the Lumia Amber update version of Nokia’s own goodies on top of Windows Phone. The Finns have promised that the Lumia Amber update will be available to the Lumia family of devices running Windows Phone later this year. According to a recent Nokia Spain tweet, you should be on the lookout for the Lumia Amber update this August. It will bring the same user experience found on the Lumia 925 to other Nokia Windows Phones, with the addition of Nokia Smart ...

Carrier looking to July availability for Windows Phone 8 GDR2 updates

We’ve been talking about Microsoft’s plans for the next big Windows Phone 8 update, GDR2, for months now. Some of the picture of how the update would arrive has been clear: for instance, we know that Nokia models will start getting their “Amber” updates next month, and that’s going to be tied-in to the release of GDR2. But with how inconsistent Windows Phone update distribution has become, that’s hardly confirmation that other OEMs would ...

Itsdagram (Instance) is the perfect example of a third-party app gone right

Not sure if you remember, but we’ve talked about Instagram around these parts before. We’ve gave you a guided tour of the photo-sharing app when it first came to Android last Spring, and the relative merit of the app has been disputed more times on the Pocketnow Weekly podcast than is probably necessary. But regardless of your personal feelings about the social photography title (looking at you here

Windows Phone Notification Center, features, and more in leaked screenshots

Here’s something to think about this weekend. A Reddit user claims to have purchased a Lumia 920 on eBay with a version of Windows Phone never seen before. There are also a couple of alleged screenshots among which a Windows Phone Notification Center and apparently a new Calendar interface. Microsoft’s Thomas Fennel said the company “ran out of time” when speaking at the Build conference last year, referring to a Notification Center. The screenshot above claims to be ...

Pocketnow Weekly 047: Nokia EOS rumors, webOS sentimentalism, & a whole lotta outtakes

Sometimes you get listener mail that asks how the band got together in the first place. Sometimes that happens the day after you drop some nostalgic sentimentalism all over the internet. Sometimes, simultaneously, there are some sweet, juicy rumors and leaks about a top-of-the-line camera phone with what looks like a moon crater on it. Sometimes you gotta put all that into a podcast with the original cadre of Pocketnow ‘casters, and see what comes out. All that, plus the longest outtake reel in the history of Pocketnow, more Nokia EOS rumors than you can shake a stick at, the ...

Nokia Showdown: Lumia 928 vs Lumia 920 (Video)

The Lumia 928 is an important smartphone for Verizon Wireless, and if you’re a Verizon customer who’s been waiting for a flagship Nokia Windows Phone, it’s an important smartphone for you. We gave the 928 the Quick Review treatment last week, doing our best to consider it on its own merits, avoiding the temptation to compare it too closely with its AT&T-shackled predecessor – because we knew the time would come for such things. Well that time, friends, is now: the Lumia ...

Nokia Android phone? Yawn. Google-friendly Windows Phone? Take my money.

It’s become a trope in mobile tech: write an article about Nokia, and someone will leave a comment suggesting that all the beleaguered company needs to do to return to prominence is build an Android phone. Mark my words: it’ll even happen on this article, despite the contravening headline. And, fanboys being fanboys, a flame war (or at least a small brush fire) will erupt. As Emperor Palpatine might say, “it is unavoidable.” You don’t know ...

Pocketnow Weekly 044: Galaxy S 4 Google Edition, I/O 2013, & Nokia Lumia 925

Last we checked, there are 52 weeks in a year – but you wouldn’t know it, given the announcement schedule of some major players in the tech space. Companies vying for the attention of fickle consumers often stack their events one right after the other in a strategic attempt to undermine competitors, sometimes hosting major announcements just days -or even hours- apart. Sometimes, it’s all a tech podcast team can do to keep up. Such a thing happened this week, with Nokia preempting Google’s annual I/O developer conference with an announcement of its own: the Lumia ...
