Nokia, Haven’t You Learned Anything From HTC or Samsung?

In the mobile space, while most hardware OEMs are multi-million dollar corporations with tens of thousands of employees, only a select few are turning a profit and thriving. Even some of the most reputable brands in the industry – HTC, Motorola, LG, Huawei, etc. – are struggling to get a foothold in the smartphone realm. With major re-branding and a fresh start in 2011 and the beginning of 2012, we didn’t exactly expect Nokia to recover from years of turbulence overnight. But we did hope it would impact the company … positively. Now, over one year later, the company is still ...

The Nokia Lumia 925 Omits The 920′s Most Futuristic Feature

Well, we’re about six hours past the announcement of the latest Windows Phone out of Finland, the Nokia Lumia 925, so it’s about time to start armchair quarterbacking. Everyone ready? Good. Let’s hit it. What do you do when your flagship Windows Phone (indeed, your only flagship phone, period) is well-received by the marketplace, but draws criticism for a few elements of its design? Well, you correct those deficiencies in the next flagship, of course. But what if you want to address those concerns sooner, ...

Lumia 925, Lumia 920, Lumia 928: Comparison (Video)

Nokia added two new Lumias to its lineup this month, first with the announcement of the Lumia 928 for Verizon, and just now the Lumia 925. As descendants of the stalwart Lumia 920, these phones all share some basic hardware, and for this group that means packing some serious camera hardware. Still, these three aren’t cookie-cutter copies of each other. Decisions Nokia’s made, both in regards to hardware and software, have shaped how each ...

Pocketnow Weekly 043: The Post-Galaxy S 4 Tech Podcast You’ve Been Waiting For

At Pocketnow, we have a responsibility to try the new, the fresh, and the weird – and that latter swamp is exactly the one Managing Editor Anton D. Nagy waded into with his recent review of the ASUS Fonepad – the tablet with an earpiece. Or the phone with a tablet screen. Whatever you want to call it, we’ve covered it – and Tony has some thoughts about using a seven-inch smartphone in this edition of one of your favorite tech podcasts. After we clear the giant-phone convo, we’ve ...

Microsoft Releases Fanboy-Bashing Video, While Samsung Prepares Cringe-Worthy GS4 Song

Promotion can make or break a smartphone, so let’s take a moment to checkout two recent entries from some of the industry’s heavyweights: a new Lumia 920 ad from Microsoft, and a clip from the Galaxy S 4′s Indian launch that makes even the over-the-top US event seem restrained in comparison. The Microsoft ad really pulls no punches, and in just a short span of time manages to fire off plenty of volleys at all the quirkiness of both Apple and Samsung designs, as well as some ...

The Pocketnow Weekly Podcast, Episode 040

We didn’t expect to run the Weekly with a skeleton crew two weeks in a row – and it’s a good thing we didn’t have to. Mere minutes into this week’s Tony-and-Michael-only podcast, Taylor Martin arrives to save us from the spectre of a fun, but low-energy, two-man show. In its place: jokes, laughs, and a lot of industry insight you’re gonna wanna put your ears on. We talk phone batteries that can jump-start your car, what place Twitter has in music, whether we should be excited about Motorola’s X phone or Nokia’s aluminum Catwalk, and the ...

Video Demos Forthcoming Lumia 920 Tap-to-Wake Feature

Some rumors from a couple weeks back discussed the possible new features that could arrive with a new Windows Phone 8 update, including a handful specific to Nokia models. One of those was a neat ability to wake the phone from sleep by double-tapping on the handset’s screen. Today, we get to check out how that would work, thanks to a video purporting to demo the feature. Sure enough, you can see the Lumia 920 in this clip waking from sleep following a gentle double-tap on the screen. That’s pretty much what we had ...

Dear Nokia, Please Reboot Your Phone Designs

Oh no! Just how many variations on the same design can the market take? I guess the fair answer to that is different from person to person and there’s always the good old saying according to which you shouldn’t fix something that is not broken (or, in this case, that still sells). Apple’s iPhones look fairly the same; of course there are differences from one major iteration to the other (3, 4, 5) but the design principle is alike. Before Samsung launched its Galaxy S 4 I was praying for a new design because the current pebble-like aspect has been used and abused like a ...

Latest Lumia 920 Firmware Hits a Snag; Nokia Halts Distribution

Windows Phone has seriously not been having good luck with phone updates recently. There was that whole business with Microsoft stopping the distribution of Windows Phone 7.8 updates back in February, and now we’ve learned that another release has had to be withdrawn, this time with Nokia and its most recent Lumia 920 update for AT&T. 920 firmware 1308 started going out last week, delivering a bunch of fixes and tweaks that make ...
