Samsung’s new smartphone OLED panel offers improved outdoor visibility and brightness

Samsung’s display-making arm – Samsung Display – has today unveiled an improved OLED display that is claimed to solve the outdoor visibility woes of smartphones. It is quite common to notice that text and images, especially those with a dark background, appear a lot dimmer and less legible when viewed under sunlight. The latest innovation from Samsung Display claims to produce brighter colors and offers improved outdoor visibility. The company adds that its new OLED panel has been certified by UL for its  ‘Sunlight Visibility’ performance. Also, Samsung has already used this improved OLED panel on the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G

Higher brightness, beter outdoor visibility, vivid colors, and over 1,500 nits brightness

The South Korean electronics giant mentions in its press release that its upgraded OLED panel employs a proprietary light-emitting mechanism to produce colors that result in more vivid shades and a higher degree of chroma in outdoor conditions. The company adds that its latest display innovation has managed to achieve an Ambient Color Gamut rating of 73% on the DCI-P3 scale. More importantly, it is claimed to offer a brightness output of over 1,500 nits, which is quite impressive.

Samsung says it is relying on new organic material to make its improved OLED panel that will mostly be used on flagships and high-end 5G-ready phones. “Though it can be used with many types of smartphones, Samsung’s new OLED is particularly well suited for 5G devices as it will provide greater device usability and therein, more value for consumers,” said Dennis Choi, VP & Head of Mobile Display Marketing Team at Samsung Display.

Samsung will offer its new OLED panel to rival smartphone makers too

The new OLED panel will appear on more Samsung flagships and high-end 5G phones

Aside from making its way to Samsung’s own upcoming flagships, the company also expects other smartphone makers to utilize its new and improved OLED display. In addition to offering better color reproduction under sunlight and higher brightness, the next-gen display offering by Samsung is also said to reduce power consumption as well.

Samsung Display is making 90Hz OLED screens for laptops

While the smartphone industry is quickly evolving to high refresh rate displays, the screens on laptops are still limited to 60Hz refresh rate. However, this could change soon. Samsung Display has announced that it has begun mass-production of 90Hz OLED displays for laptops. It announced that it will mass produce these screens in the first quarter of 2021.

Samsung Display announced the latest development on its blog. It said it’s going to mass-produce the world’s first 90Hz OLED laptop displays in the first quarter of this year. The Samsung subsidiary remains one of the biggest suppliers of OLED displays, and now it is all set to bring the new tech to laptops. “OLED display panels can best satisfy the diverse consumer needs for laptops used in telework, online education, video streaming, and gaming,” the company said.

The subsidiary said that it is helping to introduce a major shift in the market as it collaborates closely with global manufacturers. Moreover, several new laptops with 90HZ OLED displays could be introduced this year. Samsung Display believes that customers would quickly adapt to the new development and purchase laptops with high refresh rate OLED panels even if they require the use of a high-spec graphics card.

90Hz OLED vs 120Hz LCD

The 90Hz refresh rate renders images 90 times per second, and thanks to this rapid refresh rate update in motion, smoother-looking visuals are possible. Plus, OLED displays are able to transition from one screen to the next much more quickly than their LCD counterpart with the same refresh rate. As a result,  OLED screens can make gaming and movie watching a more vibrant and pleasurable experience. A 90Hz OLED display is said to offer high-speed driving that is actually on par with that of 120Hz LCD screens.

Business Wire reports that Samsung Display tested blur length using the same motion picture of a fast driving car and found that the image drag of 90Hz OLED and 120Hz high refresh rate LCD screens is 0.9mm and 1mm, respectively.

Samsung may have revealed what we’re getting in future Galaxy phones

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Samsung was one of the first companies to step into the foldable phone market. Indeed, the devices are far from being perfect, and they still have a long way to go before they become the standard, but we can’t deny that they’re fantastic, and deep inside, we all wish we could have one in our pockets. Whatever the case, the South Korean tech giant is constantly working to improve, to deliver some of the best foldable devices available, and its display division has recently teased what could be the future of Samsung’s foldable phones.

Samsung Display has recently posted a couple of images that give us an idea of future foldable Galaxy devices. Renderings show us a phone with a triple folding panel that would easily transform into a tablet. Now, rumors have also mentioned that Samsung is working to make this idea a real working device. We also know that the company has several patents for tri-fold display panels, so we may get to see it in a not so distant future.

The second rendering shows what could be a new device with a rollable display, which doesn’t seem so crazy after the latest rumors of rollable devices from more than one company. However, this design seems to leave the rectangular phone design behind, and it would opt for a cylindrical stick from which a display would roll out. The best part is that Samsung has also been working on this idea, and it also possesses some patents that may also become real in the future.

We are also expecting changes in Samsung’s flagship devices next year, as the Galaxy Note series may disappear, and in its place, we could get a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and a Galaxy Z Fold 3 with stylus support, as well as a new device that could feature a rollable display.

Samsung unveils its next-gen foldable OLED panel with world’s smallest curvature

Samsung Display – the Korean electronics giant’s display R&D and manufacturing wing – has today announced the commercialization of its third-generation foldable OLED panel that offers the smallest radius of curvature out of any comparable solution in the world. This panel has already made its way to the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G, making it the first commercially available device to make use of the innovation. The biggest advantage of a smaller radius of curvature is that the display will now fold more completely alongside the crease, leaving less empty space (or gap) between the two halves of the screen when the device is shut closed. The new foldable panel from Samsung Display measures 7.6-inch diagonally and offers a resolution of 2208×1768 pixels

The company is calling its new product the 1.4R foldable OLED display and it employs the UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) solution as well. Moreover, it has been certified for 200,000 display panel folds by Bureau Veritas – a global inspection and certification company – to verify the material strength and durability of the new foldable OLED panel. Additionally, it is claimed to offer the lowest level of blue light emission in the industry at 6.5%, ensuring a more comfortable viewing experience. A smaller gap between the two halves of the display ensures that the chances of foreign objects lodging themselves in the empty space and causing damage to it are also minimized

“In an effort to minimize folding stress, Samsung Display has optimized a series of technologies related to the material of the display, the panel design and the module assembly, so that the multi-layered structure will function like a cushion when the panel is folded,” says Samsung Display. The company adds that an inward folding panel like its 1.4R foldable OLED display demands a higher level of design expertise compared to the development of an outward folding panel such as the one used on the HUAWEI Mate Xs. You can read more about the pros and cons of the latter here.

Samsung might use its own OLED panels on Galaxy S21 as BOE fails quality test

Back in April, we came across a report from South Korea claiming that Samsung will source OLED panel for the upcoming Galaxy S flagship – tentatively called the Galaxy S21 – from BOE. Well, it now appears that BOE is out of the equation, and Samsung Display will again provide the panels for the upcoming Galaxy S series flagships.

As per a report from Korea-based DDaily, BOE failed to pass Samsung’s display quality test. In fact, the panels provided by BOE reportedly failed at the very first quality analysis test, but the company plans to re-apply for another round of testing for 6.67-inch flexible OLED panels demanded by Samsung.

Notably, BOE even failed to supply the first shipment of OLED panels for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 series. While it remains to be seen whether BOE finally manages to impress Samsung with the quality of its OLED panels, it is quite likely that the South Korean electronics giant will again knock at the doors of Samsung Display to supply OLED panels for the Galaxy S21 lineup.

Samsung may provide almost 80% of the iPhone 12’s OLED displays

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Apple may be looking for ways to stop depending on Samsung’s OLED panels, but it seems that Samsung Display would provide almost 80 percent of the OLED displays that will be used in the upcoming iPhone 12.

“Samsung Display has obtained nearly 80% of the overall panel orders for Apple’s next-generation iPhone series tentatively dubbed ‌iPhone 12‌ slated for launch later this year, according to industry sources. LG Display and BOE are other panel suppliers for the upcoming iPhones.”

It seems that this year’s iPhone 12 displays may come from three different suppliers. According to DigiTimes, BOE may become one of Apple’s suppliers for OLED panels, and join LG and Samsung. Samsung has been Apple’s OLED supplier since 2017 when the company finally gave its iPhone X this feature. Now, Samsung would supply the displays for three of the upcoming iPhone 12 variants, the 5.4-inch entry-level option, the 6.1, and 6.7-inch iPhone Pro models; LG and BOE displays may be used in the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 with similar specs to the entry-level variant.
