Apple Watch Cellular vs GPS: What’s the difference?

Apple has been offering its eponymous smartwatches in two variants – GPS and GPS + Cellular – for a while now. The GPS-only model will need to be paired with your iPhone over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The GPS + Cellular version, on the other hand, can also latch on to cellular networks (LTE or UMTS) and can be used as a standalone device.

What this means is you can leave your iPhone at home and go out for a walk wearing just your Apple Watch, and you will still be able to receive calls, messages, and notifications from other useful apps. Pretty convenient, right?

Well, there are more differences between the GPS and GPS + Cellular variants of an Apple Watch than just what is mentioned above, as we’ll detail below.

What can the GPS + Cellular Apple Watch do?

Before we get into other differences, let’s first discuss what are the things that only an Apple Watch’s GPS + Cellular variant can do. Fundamentals first, you can send and receive messages and also make and answer phone calls. Plus, you can ask Siri to get directions, access messages, perform a quick web search, and do a lot more.

An Apple Watch with cellular connectivity onboard will also let you check the weather, track the performance of stocks, control your connected home devices, view a friend’s location, listen to podcasts, stream music, enjoy a radio show, use the walkie talkie feature, and also find your way back home using Maps. You can do all this without having to carry your iPhone if you have a cellular Apple Watch model strapped to your wrist.

Family Setup is a crucial consideration

Another advantage that comes with the GPS + Cellular variant of an Apple Watch is that you can use Family Setup. Arriving as part of the watchOS 7 update, Family Setup allows you to set up an Apple Watch with cellular connectivity for a family member without them requiring a phone.

This means your family members can go out and will still be able to receive calls and messages without having to carry an iPhone. But do keep in mind that this feature only works on the GPS + Cellular variants of the Apple Watch Series 4 (as well as its successors) and the Apple Watch SE. You can check the whole procedure of starting with Family Setup here

Cellular connectivity comes at a cost

With the GPS + Cellular model of an Apple Watch, you get a huge convenience and also the freedom from always carrying your iPhone. But as the saying goes, nothing good comes in life for free, especially when you are a part of Apple’s ecosystem. So naturally, you’ll have to pay a premium of around $100 for the GPS + Cellular variant of an Apple Watch compared to the GPS-only model.

The price gap might vary depending upon the case type, its size, and the Apple Watch generation you pick. For example, if you pick up the cheapest Apple Watch Series 6 model with a 40mm watch case, the GPS-only model will cost you $399. On the other hand, you pay $499 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model with the same case size and choice of strap.

Carrier conundrums

But that’s not all. Once you’ve enabled cellular functionality on your Apple Watch, your carrier will charge you a monthly fee for that convenience on top of your iPhone’s bill. Another limitation is that your Apple  Watch needs to be on the same carrier network as your iPhone. So, if your carrier doesn’t support cellular connectivity on Apple Watch, you’ll have to wait for them to adapt or switch carriers.

Thankfully, if you live in the US, almost all major carriers such as T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and even Xfinity Wireless support cellular connectivity on Apple Watch. But not all of them support Family Setup, with only T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and C Spire supporting the feature as of now. If you are a non-US citizen, you can check the complete list of carriers that support cellular connectivity and Family Setup on the Apple Watch here.

Limited design choices

You can pick up an Apple Watch in two sizes, an equal number of connectivity options, multiple case material choices as well colors, and then configure them with the band of your choice. But it doesn’t apply universally to all models. For example, if you pick up the Apple Watch Series 6 with the Gold Stainless Steel Case and Milanese Loop (pictured above), you can only get a GPS + Cellular variant, and not a cheaper non-cellular model. Likewise, the choice of watch bands at your disposal might also be limited depending upon the variant you pick. And in case you can’t get the desired combination, you might have to splurge extra cash to buy the strap of your choice separately.

    Apple Watch Series 6
Available in both GPS & Cellular models, in either 40mm or 44m size, the Apple Watch Series 6 features sleep tracking, notifications, fitness tracking, fall tracking, sleep tracking and far more. With the Cellular version, you can also use Family Setup to give your child an Apple Watch without needing to give them an iPhone as well!

Singapore will pay citizens to stay fit with Apple Watch

Singapore government and Apple have partnered in a health initiative for the citizens of the country. The two-year health initiative is called LumiHealth. Basically, it will track and reward user behavior through the Apple Watch and an iPhone app. Singapore residents will be able to earn as much as S$380 ($280) in rewards and vouchers by completing goals and tasks set within the app.

The first-of-its-kind program was designed by Singapore’s Health Promotion Board in conjunction with Apple. It is part of the country’s Smart Nation initiative, which leverages technology to deliver benefits to its citizens and businesses. The scheme has been created with a team of physicians and public health experts. Apple says it is designed “with user privacy and security at its core.” All user data will be encrypted and none will be sold or shared for marketing purposes, as per the company. Users must opt-in and provide consent to share information with LumiHealth when they join and may opt-out at any time.

As for the LumiHealth initiative, its goals can be accomplished by walking or doing other exercises like yoga or swimming. The app will also offer personalized coaching and reminders for health screenings and immunizations. These wellness challenges will help users to make better food choices and improve sleep habits. The app will remind users to go for health screenings and immunizations.

“Even as all of us around the world are dealing with the challenges of COVID-19, we must keep investing in our future. And there is no better investment than in our own personal health,” said Heng Swee Keat, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister. “This partnership between Singapore and Apple will enable Singaporeans to lead healthier lives, but equally important, it will contribute valuable insights to improving the health of people all over the world.”

To participate in the initiative, an Apple Watch and downloading the LumiHealth app is necessary. The LumiHealth app is available in the App Store for pre-order now, and the two-year program will be offered from late October 2020.

How to download and install watchOS 7 on your Apple Watch

Apple released the watchOS 6 back in September last year. It added major new features and improvements like new apps, cycle tracking, Siri improvements, Activity Trends and App Store. Fast forward to June 2020, the company released watchOS 6.25 earlier this month. It brought several bug fixes found in previous versions of watchOS. Let’s dive deep into how you can download watchOS 6.25 on your Apple Watch.

How to download and install watchOS 6

download WatchOS
  • First things first, you need to update your iPhone to iOS 13 or later. Also, charge your Apple Watch to at least 50%.
  • Make sure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Launch the Watch app.
  • Tap on My Watch tab.
  • Go to General > Software Update.
  • Now, tap on Download and Install.
  • If prompted, enter your iPhone Passcode.
  • Agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  • Go to your watch and tap Proceed to begin download.
  • Enter your Passcode on the Apple Watch.

The watchOS will download and your Apple Watch will reboot to apply the update. You can follow the progress on the Apple Watch screen. Done! You are all set.

Update to watchOS 7 instead?

download watchOS

There’s a newer version for the update out there. At WWDC 2020, Apple took the stage to announce the watchOS 7. It introduced new re-designed watch faces, better performance in Maps, and the Workout app, which now includes Dance workout.

Further, the Activity app is also getting a new name – it will now be known as the Fitness app. As if that’s not compelling enough for you to update to the latest version – which is by the way, in developer beta – watchOS 7 also brings sleep tracking.

The new OS is coming this fall. However, developers can now download the watchOS 7 beta to test it out. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get to test it for yourself right now. All you need to do is install a certificate on your Apple Watch. Moreover, you’ll need to run iOS 14 on your iPhone.

A NOTE OF CAUTION: It goes without saying that a beta build is primarily intended for developers. It also comes with bugs that can prevent the normal use of your Watch. Hence, these updates are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That’s why we recommend you to stay away from developer previews unless you have a spare device or need them for software development. Use the developer beta with caution.

How to download and install watchOS 7 Beta certificate

  • Go to developer.apple.com and log-in on the iPhone paired with your Apple Watch.
  • Tap on Discover > watchOS > Download.
  • Sign in with your Apple ID when prompted.
  • Tap Install Profile next to watchOS 7 Beta.
  • Tap on Allow for the prompt asking permission to install a profile.
  • Enter your Passcode if prompted.
  • Tap on Install to confirm.
  • Tap on Restart to reboot your Apple Watch.

Once rebooted, your Apple Watch goes back to normal.

Install watchOS 7 using your iPhone

Once the watchOS 7 Beta certificate is installed on your Apple Watch, the process of installing it is the same as any other watchOS update. We installed the certificate because it is what tells the Watch app on your iPhone that watchOS 7 is available.

  • Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi. Also, make sure your Apple Watch is charged to at least 50%.
  • Launch the Apple Watch app and tap on My Watch tab.
  • Go to General > Software Update.
  • Tap on Download and Install.
  • Enter your Passcode when prompted and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  • Tap on Install on your iPhone or the Watch.

The watchOS 7 update will start downloading. It will reboot to apply the update. You can follow the progress on the Apple Watch screen. Once done, you are all set.

Failed at the Verification stage – If your watchOS 7 update fails at the verification stage, try again. If it still fails, un-pair and re-pair the Watch and try again.

How to install WatchOS 7 using your Apple Watch

download WatchOS

Once the watchOS 7 Beta certificate is installed on your Apple Watch, we can start the process of applying it to the system. Apple added the ability to update your Apple Watch through the Settings app on the Watch itself starting with watchOS 6. Hence, you can also download watchOS 7 and install it on the device using your Apple Watch only. Here’s how:

  • Open Settings app on your Apple Watch.
  • Go to General > Software Update > Install.
  • Tap OK.
  • Open the Watch app on your iPhone and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  • Tap Download and Install on your Apple Watch.

Here’s the new Apple Watches we’re expecting at Apple’s Time Flies event

Apple has scheduled an event on September 15 – themed ‘Time Flies’ – where the company is expected to launch the Apple Watch Series 6. Notably, the company is also tipped to launch an affordable smartwatch that might eventually debut as the Apple Watch SE, taking cues from the iPhone SE which currently rocks the title of Apple’s affordable iPhone. Being a next-generation upgrade, we expect the Apple Watch Series 6 to offer better performance (duh) courtesy of a new chip, a ton of new features – some of which were announced as part of watchOS 7 – and more fitness-centric capabilities. There have been multiple leaks so far that hint at the upcoming features of the Apple Watch Series 6 and also shed some light on the Apple Watch SE. So, let’s dive right into it:

Blood Oxygen level monitoring

So far, we have come across multiple reports claiming that the ability to measure blood oxygen level will finally arrive with the Apple Watch Series 6. Fitbit and HUAWEI already offer smartwatches that are capable of measuring the oxygen concentration in blood for quite a while, and it is quite likely that Apple has refined the technology and is finally ready to ship it. However, it is unclear if Apple will add new biosensors to the Apple Watch Series 6 or it will rely on the existing heart rate sensor to measure the blood oxygen level, something that was recently spotted by iFixit.

Blood oxygen monitoring will reportedly be offered via a notification system that will alert users whenever the concentration of oxygen in their blood falls in a range that can be a health hazard. This can be a life-saving feature for people who suffer from chronic respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

Improved sleep tracking

Apple introduced a native sleep tracking feature with watchOS 7, and it will likely make its way to the Apple Watch Series 6. While sleep tracking on its own is helpful, but pairing it with data gathered from the blood oxygen measuring biosensors will give more information about the quality of sleep during different stages of your nap. However, it remains to be seen if an upgraded sleep tracking capability will also make its way to older Apple smartwatches via a software update.

Larger battery

A larger battery would be a more meaningful upgrade for the Apple Watch Series 6, considering it opens the doors for adding more health tracking features to run in the background. Earlier this year, a battery of 303.8mAh capacity was certified by the Korea Testing and Research Institute for an Apple device that was listed in the ‘Fitness’ category. To recall, the Apple Watch Series 5 shipped with a smaller 296mAh battery. The space for fitting a larger battery will reportedly be achieved by removing the Taptic Engine and 3D Touch in favor of haptic touch on the Apple Watch Series.

Panic attack detection

Panic attacks can be quite serious, and I can attest to it after seeing some of my friends go through the harrowing experience. Apple Watch Series 6 is rumored to combine heart rate and blood oxygen level data to detect if users are hyperventilating and identify if they’re having a panic attack. If the smartwatch detects users are at risk, it will ask them to take some rest and will offer some breathing exercises to help calm them down. This capability might also be tweaked to detect stress levels, something we’ve already come across in the smartwatches offered by HUAWEI, Honor, and a few other brands.

Additionally, there have been rumors of improved waterproofing, new watch faces, and even a Touch ID sensor that will be embedded in the crown. However, these rumors come from sources that don’t have a particularly stellar track record with Apple leaks, so do process them with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Apple Watch SE

As per prolific leakster Jon Prossser, an affordable Apple Watch SE will likely be launched as well, and that it will be targeted at masses that want an Apple Watch but don’t necessarily desire all those fancy features which cost a premium on the Apple Watch Series 6. It will reportedly come in two sizes – 40mm and 42mm – both of which will be offered in GPS-only and cellular variants. The design will reportedly be inspired by the Apple Watch Series 4, but it will sacrifice ECG and an always-on display to keep the price in check.

The finally marketing name might be different, but a previous Bloomberg report had also claimed that the upcoming Apple Watch lineup will include “a replacement for the Series 3 that will compete with lower-cost fitness devices such as those from Fitbit.” Details about the pricing are still under the wraps, but rumor suggests that the Apple Watch SE might be priced well under the $299 mark to make it more accessible.

You can now get Google Maps on your Apple Watch, Apple One confirmed

The wait is over. The Google Maps app is now, once again, available for download in the Apple Watch. This app was removed back in 2017 from the App Store, but now it is officially up for grabs after the latest update. And it seems that software updates have also confirmed the name of the subscription bundle that Apple wants to offer.

The new Google Maps app is now available for Apple Watch users. This new Apple Watch version is mainly focused on providing users with step-by-step directions and estimated arrival times. The apps main screen will display the user’s “Current trip,” and it will also show a list of “Travel times” below that.

Unfortunately, users won’t be able to input new locations from their Apple Watch, as they will still have to use their phone’s Maps app to add new locations. The app will allow users to navigate by car, bike, public transport, or travel, and that you can choose directly from the Apple Watch in the “Set travel mode” option.

Now, the Apple Music code for Android devices has revealed the new Apple One subscription service bundle. This service is expected to launch in the near future, and it seems that users who upgrade won’t be double charged for Apple music. This new subscription would also be managed on the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac.

It is also believed that Apple may be working on several Apple One bundle tiers. The basic service would include Apple Music and Apple TV+, while other tiers would include Apple Arcade, and the third tier would also include Apple News+. We may also see options with iCloud storage, a new fitness-oriented service with virtual classes, and more. These bundles would help customers save from $2 to $5 depending on the services they need.

First public beta for watchOS7 is available for beta testers

Apple released the first public beta version of watchOS7 earlier today. This version has arrived four weeks after sending it to developers, and one month and a half after being announced at WWDC 2020. This new update can be downloaded after installing the proper profile from the Apple Public Beta site.

The new watchOS 7 public beta is available for grabs. This new version finally includes a Sleep Tracking feature for the Apple Watch. It also brings Wind Down, which will help you establish a bedtime routine, a new Sleep Mode that activates Do Not Disturb, and dims the display on your watch.

Your Apple Watch will also be able to wake you up using haptic vibrations. It gives you weather reports and info on your watch’s battery life. You will also be told if you have washed your hands for the appropriate amount of time with automatic handwashing detection. The Maps app will also support directions for Cyclists, and Siri will provide spoken translations and more.

However, you have to remember that this is still a beta version, so it may include one or two bugs. If that’s not a problem for you, you can get the new watchOS 7 public beta version on your Apple Watch Series 3, Series 4 and Series 5.

The next Apple Watch could feature blood oxygen monitoring sensor

According to a new report, Apple is working on adding new upgrades to the health-related features of Apple Watch. The company might add a blood oxygen monitoring sensor to its Apple Watch Series 6. It reiterates on the previous rumor that said future Apple Watch will detect blood oxygen levels for the first time.

The latest development comes from DigiTimes. It says that Apple Watch‌ 6 will feature biosensors that can monitor sleeping conditions, detect blood oxygen and measure pulse rates. It will also allow the watch to give data on heartbeats and atrial fibrillation. The report adds that the future Apple Watch will also incorporate MEMS-based accelerometer and gyroscope. It will allow the device to lead in measurement precision among wearable devices.

According to previous reports, the Watch will send a notification when it detects blood oxygen below a certain level. Previous rumors have also stated that the Apple Watch 6 could arrive with a Touch ID sensor. We had seen this feature embedded in the devices Digital Crown, even though it is currently used for capturing ECG.

Best screen protectors for Apple Watch in 2020

If you’re looking for Apple Watch screen protectors, we’re rounding our favorites up for you. The Apple Watch is not only a life companion, but it’s also a fashion statement. It could be your best gym buddy or personal trainer, just as well as it can be an accouterment complementing your attire. We already rounded up some of the best Apple Watch bands to use for most occasions, and now we’re giving you some of the best options to keep your Apple Watch pristine.

Whether you’re at the gym, on the court, at the office, or just living your daily routine, chances are you will, at one point, end up scratching the glass on the Apple Watch or scuffing its case. To prevent that, check out the screen protectors below, and make sure your wearable stays just as shiny as it was the first time you put it on your wrist.

    ZAGG InvisibleShield HD

    The minimalist

You won't notice this Apple Watch screen protector as it's 100% clear. It's also Military Grade and has self-healing properties.
    IQ Shield Screen Protector

    The abuser

With four layers of protection, this Apple Watch screen protector comes in a six-pack offering LIQuidSkin smart film protection.
    JETech Screen Protector

    No distractions

These are tempered glass screen protectors only 0.2mm thick offering edge-to-edge protection. They're responsive and highly transparent.
    DeltaShield Screen Protector

    The comfortable

Comes with Lifetime Replacement Warranty. Package contains screen protectors, installation squeegee, microfiber cleaning cloth and instructions.
    LK Screen Protector (6 Pack)

    The hoarder

This six-pack contains 0.1mm thin flexible TPU screen protectors which are 99% HD Clear for maximum protection and transparency.
    Liquid Tempered Glass Screen Protector

    Full coverage protection

This tempered glass protector is anti-shatter and scratch proof, with a 9H hardness rating. Features polished rounded edges and 98% transparency.

If you’re among those power users who expose their Apple Watch to extremes, don’t worry if a classic tempered glass, TPU, or film screen protector won’t just cut it. IF you’re mountain climbing, river rafting, playing football, or any other activities that put the integrity of your Apple Watch at risk, you might want to consider a more advanced protective solution.

That’s what the Apple Watch cases are for, offering extra protection for the watch, in addition to protecting the screen itself. Check out three popular options that we recommend, for the elegant, the casual, and the active.

    UMTELE Shiny Rhinestone Protector

    Bling bling!

For the flashy, this case is decorated with premium sparkling bling crystal rhinestones. Offers hard frame full protection.
    BRG Case Screen Protector

    Minimalist full protection

With 99% transparency, this case offers complete 360 degree protection for your Apple Watch. You also get a two-bundle.
    V85 Shock-proof Protector

    The rugged solution

This TPU bumper is shock-proof and shatter-resistant, offering full edge coverage to prevent scratches, drops, bumps, and other abuse.

When it comes down to our personal preferences, we like the minimalist approach, because we prefer to show off the beauty of the watch itself. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, and your tastes could be different, but we think you shouldn’t cover up leather seats with fabric covers.

That’s why our favorite is the ZAGG InvisibleShield HD, as it is seamless in providing that extra layer of protection for the glass on your Apple Watch. Being military-grade, and featuring self-healing capabilities, it also ensures you don’t have to swap them out very often as they tend to regenerate and fix light scratches.

For the reasons we mentioned above, we don’t like the case approach, but we’d pop on a V85 Shock-proof Protector when Crossfit training and weight lifting, especially if you’re working with kettlebells. Those of you who are active at the gym know what we’re talking about, as you always have to take off your watch to protect it when you’re handling kettlebells above your shoulders.

For the flashy among us out there, if you’d like to stand out with a blingy watch, Umtele Rhinestone Protector. It comes in several colors, and it really stands out as it shines from all those crystal rhinestones.

Sometimes having more options makes it more difficult to choose the right product for you. In the case of the Apple Watch bands, you have thousands of choices, if not more, at various prices, designs, styles, materials, colors, and so on.

By narrowing it down to our favorites, we’re trying to make your choice easier. In our particular case, when we’re burning calories, we prefer the look of the YC YANCH Watch Band. Couple it with a watch face that’s matching the band color, and you’re killing it with style at the gym, on the court, or the track.

When we go classic we prefer the looks of the JETECH Replacement Band, because it brings everything a classic metal watch band is about. With a classic metal clasp and individual links, you can never go wrong if you’re aiming for that “classic” look. As they say: “you can’t beat a classic!”.

In case you’re dressing up for a special occasion or a business meeting. In that case, we prefer the KYISGOS Watch Band, because it’s simply elegant, and it’s affordable to get a pair or a trio to match your belt, shoes, other accessories, or general attire. Watch out though: the stainless steel adapters that connect to the watch come in different colors. Make sure to match your watch color for a seamless look!

Upcoming Apple Watch feature will detect panic attacks

Rumors have long suggested that the upcoming Apple Watch Series 6 will be able to monitor your blood oxygen levels — something competing smartwatches and trackers already do — but according to recent reports Apple’s won’t stop there.

watchOS 7 will allegedly use all of the information it can gather in order to introduce and focus on new mental health-related features. The information was shared by Jon Prosser on the Geared Up podcast, and he said:

What their biggest focus on is right now and I hope it comes this year, it might come next year, but I hope it’s coming to WWDC is mental health capabilities. Where they can take the oxygen levels in your blood with your heart rate and determine if you’re hyperventilating. They can identify a panic attack before it happens and warn you on your watch. Especially if you’re driving, they’ll ask you to pull over and they’ll offer breathing exercises once you get pulled over.

Jon Prosser

It’s not certain whether said features will be available this year, or maybe in 2021, though Prosser is hopeful it happens in 2020. If, indeed, said features require a hardware sensor for blood oxygen monitoring, chances are Apple will hold back on the announcement until said sensor is available on an upcoming Apple Watch.

If, however, current and older Apple Watches will be able to detect, with their current hardware components, blood oxygen levels, we should expect an announcement at the upcoming WWDC.

Alongside these features, Apple is also expected to introduce capabilities related to stress levels and sleep tracking.
