Samsung Galaxy S 4 Active Quick Review

One of the up-sides to Samsung’s “try everything once” approach to doing business is that it lets the company nimbly and swiftly crank out variations on a theme. Want a Galaxy S 4, only smaller? You got it. Want a Galaxy Camera with a phone attached? Done. Want the world’s craziest tablet/notebook hybrid?

Samsung, the Galaxy S 4 Active is not as rugged as we want

Phones are expensive. It’s ironic but true. I find it odd that the average computer can be much more affordable than the average smartphone. Shouldn’t this be the other way around? If we were to judge the cost of building a computer in comparison to a smartphone, computers are bigger; they require more powerful technology to work, so in basic but un-researched logic, smartphones shouldn’t be as expensive as they are. The reason why we pay so much money for them is because there are too many third parties involved in the smartphone industry, and because they’re the ...

AT&T offers 50% off all smartphones; Waives activation throughout June

Not sure what’s going on in this specific month of June, but let’s just say that there are only 7 days left for you to make some extra bang for your buck. As it turns out, we just learned that Walmart is discounting the iPhone line-up permanently, but it also seems as if this is not the only company wanting to give you a discount, and this time there are even carriers involved. As of today and until the end of June, AT&T will be offering a 50% discount on all smartphones, and we didn’t type that ...

Galaxy S 4 Active unboxing (Video)

The Galaxy S 4 Active. We’ve talked about it on the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, we’ve followed its march from rumor to release, and we’ve even taken it for a dunk in a demo tank in London. Now, thanks to the speedy folks at AT&T, we’ve got a review version of this durable smartphone in the Pocketnow offices – and in eye-catching Dive Blue, no less! But the folks at UPS must’ve been tipped off to the rugged nature of our IP67-rated demo unit, because the box arrived on our doorstep in a dilapidated, disintegrating condition. Did the Galaxy S 4 Active ...

Pocketnow Weekly 049: Samsung keeps making stuff, we keep squawking about it (Samsung Premiere 2013)

In the food service industry, when you’re a server who’s been slammed with too many customers and can’t keep up with the demand, you’re said to be “in the weeds.” On a podcast, that same expression means something quite different. It means you’ve wandered so far from your intended topic (in this case, mobile technology) that you’ve found yourself in the far-flung wilderness talking about anything but (in this case, sports cars, British accents, and the adult film industry). But while we do spend a fair amount of time in OT land on ...

Samsung, stop calling every new phone a Galaxy S 4

Branding is more important than many people give it credit for. And if you have ever doubted its power or influence, look no further than Samsung for proof that branding does matter. Every Android phone Samsung releases these days bears the Galaxy branding. Every Windows device bears the ATIV branding. Between them, the flagship devices each use the S moniker (i.e.: ATIV S and Galaxy S 4). The Note line signifies any device with an S Pen. The Tab moniker is used to categorize high-end tablets without S Pens. And there are at least a dozen other branding terms Samsung uses for various ...

Samsung Galaxy and ATIV announcements, Instagram Video & more – Pocketnow Daily

Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Instagram Video, and what this means to the few that actually use Twitter’s Vine service. NVIDIA is next as the company is shaving-off some money from the price-tag of their NVIDIA Shield. Liquid Cooling is next as both Apple and Samsung are reportedly in advanced projects that will allow future iPhones and Samsung Galaxies to offer this technology. Microsoft and Nokia make the headlines next since rumors had them working on a Nokia buy-out weeks ago. We end today’s show talking about the Samsung Premiere event and all the ...

Galaxy S 4 Active underwater trial (Video)

With some killer specs that very nearly measure up to the dry land version of the Galaxy S 4, the GS4 Active would make a decent smartphone even if you never found the need to put its dust- and water-resistance to the test. Of course, we’re not going to let a major selling point like that go uninvestigated. Sure, Samsung showed us some underwater GS4 Active action during its Samsung Premiere event, but we had to check this out for ourselves. After all, even knowing how this phone’s specifically engineered to withstand ...

Galaxy S 4 Active vs. Galaxy S 4 (Video)

OK, so the Galaxy S 4 Active can stand up to a quick dunk – but is it a better straight-up phone than the stock Galaxy S 4? The two may be close relatives, but they aren’t without their differences. Between these two Galaxy Androids we can find a number of small differences when it comes to specs and capabilities, along with some more obvious revisions, like the GS4 Active’s modified design. Do those rivets on the back look as cool in real life as they have

Galaxy S 4 Active hands-on (Video)

Samsung may have announced the Galaxy S 4 Active earlier this month, but at the Samsung Premiere event in London today we finally got our first chance to interact with the smartphone. The Sony Xperia Z got a trend going earlier this year where Android smartphones could be resistant to the elements without sacrificing on power. That’s very much the case here with the GS4 Active, which manages to come through with a five-inch 1080p screen and ...

Pocketnow Weekly 048: Galaxy S 5 rumors meet Nokia EOS leaks in back alley, nasty knife fight ensues

Before we begin, we’d just like to say something to everyone who’s going to call us out for click-baiting with that “Galaxy S 5″ title: your allegations are completely founded and true. But look here: even though Galaxy S 5 rumors are (to say the least) premature and indicative of a serious problem with our nasty-fast industry -an issue we discuss on the air- they’re also important. That’s because, as unreliable and, frankly, stupid as they are, they also give us an opportunity to discuss the future of Samsung industrial design. And any opportunity we ...

AT&T announces Galaxy S 4 Active as carrier exclusive

Yesterday, waterproof phones were all over the news, and part of that was due to a teaser video AT&T produced showing what sure looked like it might be a Samsung Galaxy S 4 Active, along with the promise that the carrier would have more news for us today. Sure enough, this morning AT&T came through with its announcement, revealing plans to start selling the GS4 Active on June 21. AT&T will get the phone in Urban Gray and Dive Blue (none of that Metallic ...

AT&T announcing Galaxy S 4 Active plans tomorrow?

One week ago, Samsung finally confirmed rumors about the ruggedized version of the GS4 we had heard it was working on, and announced the Galaxy S 4 Active. While there were a few sacrifices made (like an eight-megapixel camera and LCD screen) the Active stayed remarkably close to matching its namesake’s hardware. That answered all our questions about the device itself, but we still needed to learn just how it would arrive. A new teaser video from AT&T now has us thinking that we could begin getting ...

Pocketnow Weekly 047: Nokia EOS rumors, webOS sentimentalism, & a whole lotta outtakes

Sometimes you get listener mail that asks how the band got together in the first place. Sometimes that happens the day after you drop some nostalgic sentimentalism all over the internet. Sometimes, simultaneously, there are some sweet, juicy rumors and leaks about a top-of-the-line camera phone with what looks like a moon crater on it. Sometimes you gotta put all that into a podcast with the original cadre of Pocketnow ‘casters, and see what comes out. All that, plus the longest outtake reel in the history of Pocketnow, more Nokia EOS rumors than you can shake a stick at, the ...

Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the announcement of the BlackBerry Q10 for AT&T, along with the rumors of a flagship BlackBerry A10 for the fall. Microsoft has also announced Outlook RT for Windows RT, but there’s a lot that’s lame about the timing. Nokia is next as they’ve just leaked photos of their EOS smartphone emerge, some good, some fake. HTC takes the spotlight again today as we’ve got some leaked photos of an HTC One Mini, which looks like an interesting alternative to the One. We end today’s show talking about Samsung’s ...
