HUAWEI overtakes Samsung in global smartphone shipments in Q2 2020

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

HUAWEI was the leading smartphone brand in Q2 2020, according to Canalys. The company overtook Samsung Electronics in global smartphone shipments in the second quarter. It shipped 55.8 million devices from April to June, down 5 percent from a year earlier. In contrast, Samsung’s volume slid a sharper 30 percent to 53.7 million.

According to Canalys, it was the first quarter in nine years that a brand other than Apple or Samsung has led the global market. However, it may be tough for HUAWEI to maintain that lead due to the US sanctions. Further, the company’s overseas shipments fell 27 percent in 2Q, but its Chinese volumes rose 8 percent.

Following the announcement, Huawei has released the following statement:

“Our business has demonstrated exceptional resilience in these difficult times. Amidst a period of unprecedented global economic slowdown and challenges, we’ve continued to grow and further our leadership position by providing innovative products and experience to consumers.

As we look towards the future, where 5G, AI and IoT will grow increasingly ubiquitous, our focus will remain on executing our All-scenario Seamless AI Life Strategy. Our technology – from smartphones, tablets through to PCs and wearables – is grounded in our commitment to consumers and fulfilling their needs.”

Apple’s Q2 numbers show strong iPhone sales in the Chinese market

Let’s talk about sales for a second. We know that Apple was struggling back in February as they reportedly only selling 500k iPhones in China for that month. Now, according to some CINNO research, Apple saw a 225% growth from April-June which resulted in a 13M iPhones shipped during this period. Since then, the iPhone 11 and the new iPhone SE were apparently driving many of the sales, which lead to a 62% growth year-over-year. These numbers aren’t exactly clear but another research note also puts Apple in the second place in terms of growth, with the leader being Huawei.

Future Apple AirPods could feature bone conduction for improved audio

We’ve been talking about a lot of Apple patents as of late and now, we have a new one that sheds some light as to what AirPods might do in the future. According to this patent, Cupertino is working on bone conduction technology with normal air-based sound transmission. To put it in a simple way, it would allow them to send audio through two general areas and, since there is nothing really going into your ear canal, you have better awareness of your environment if you want to hear it. However, we know that Apple is notorious for patents and this may not happen soon but it would be nice to see.

Samsung is considering to drop Bixby & Galaxy Apps Store as Google offers new mobile apps deal

Alright, now let’s talk Samsung cause we have some possible major news, which we are hoping do happen. For those of you Samsung users that like to disable the Bixby button, we have some good news for you. Samsung is apparently in talks with Google for a deal that would make Samsung push the Google Assistant and get rid of Bixby. This also means that Samsung would stop pushing their Galaxy Apps Store. The two companies are apparently discussing the financial terms and according to Bloomberg, Samsung stated that “they are closely working with Google and other partners to give you the best customer experience”. Google also stated that they won’t be doing the same with other partners. Does this mean you can partner again for a new Samsung Galaxy Nexus? Or Google Play Edition Note 20? Guys can you imagine?

Samsung Galaxy Buds Live flaunt their wingtips for the first time in leaked renders

Here’s your first detailed look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 live image spotted online ahead of launch

Let’s move on to your daily dose of the unhealthy amount of Samsung leaks we have and, they come from trusted sources. Let’s start it off with the Galaxy Buds Live. We have some new renders from Twitter, showing off the Buds in their Black and Bronze color variants and, if you hadn’t seen these before…. These pictures show them from every possible angle, they even show some wing tips that we hadn’t seen which will prevent them from falling off your ear. Moving on to the Z Fold 2, we have a hands on IRL picture which shows the phone booting up but, we can’t really see anything else other than the name. Luckily, the source from the Buds pics posted other renders of the Z Fold 2 as well, showing off the new design. The outer display looks way better than the original Fold, and the camera array looks pretty much like the one we’re expecting from the Note. Other leaks also suggest that we might get a very expensive Thom Browne edition of the Z fold 2 which will retail for around $2800, yeah you heard that right.

Story of the day:

OnePlus Nord-series smartphone is coming to the US later this year, reveals Carl Pei

OnePlus’ next Nord-series smartphone might use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 690 SoC

And finally the hottest news today have to do with the OnePlus Nord. Actually let’s start calling it the Nord lineup, because we’ve got two separate news that indicate so, one pretty much official. We thought that you would only be able to get the OnePlus Nord in North America through that trial thing were only 50 fans would get it but, apparently that won’t be the case, sort of. Carl Pei just went on an interview and said that the Nord won’t be available in the US once it goes on sale on August 4th but, he said that a Nord-branded phone is set to land on US shores later this year so “you don’t have to feel left out for too long”. As a matter of fact, in one of their Nord promo videos they mentioned the term “OnePlus Series” possibly hinting that the Nord isn’t the only device and, they even have a dedicated “Nord Series” page in their website. On the second report that’s most likely unrelated, it seems that there’s also another, less expensive Nord in the works. XDA also discovered in the latest Oxygen OS update a new OnePlus phone that would use the Qualcomm 690 SoC which is their latest 5G budget solution. Apparently the internal code name is Billie and we don’t have any other information just yet.

iPhone 12 lineup and new iPads could launch in October

We keep getting more information suggesting that the new iPhone 12 lineup may launch in October. The latest rumor comes from well-known leaker Jon Prosser, who also believes that we are getting new iPads in the next Apple event.

It seems that Apple may not launch its new iPhone 12 in September like previous years. We have seen tons of rumors and reports claiming that the ongoing pandemic has affected Cupertino’s supply chain and, therefore, the launch of its new devices. Now, leaker Jon Prosser has posted on his Twitter account, that the iPhone 12 and iPads will arrive until October. In a way, this may line up with @ihacktu’s information, where he believes that we will have an Apple event in October, but then again, this event is supposed to deliver a new iPad Pro and Apple Silicone Macs.

Prosser doesn’t specify which iPad model will get a refresh, but rumors mention a new mini-LED iPad Pro and a new iPad Air with an all-screen display and under-display Touch ID.

OnePlus 8T could’ve been spotted at Geekbench

OnePlus is not taking a break. It has recently launched the new OnePlus Nord and the OnePlus Buds, but it seems that it’s also getting things ready to launch the OnePlus 8T.

We usually have to wait until October-November to see the OnePlus’ T series launch, but that doesn’t mean that we have to wait until then to get information about the device. It seems that the new OnePlus 8T has recently passed through Geekbench. A device with model number KB2001 has just appeared running Android 11, with 8GB RAM and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. Unfortunately, we can’t know if this was the regular version of the OnePlus 8 T or the OnePlus 8T Pro. It’s also hard to tell if this is the regular Snapdragon 865 or the 865+ processor, but at least we can say that the device reached decent scores, which match the results of other SD865 powered devices.

Apple’s Q2 numbers show strong iPhone sales in the Chinese market

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

According to recent data, iPhone sales have skyrocketed in China. The last report from Shanghai’s CINNO Research claims that Apple’s Q2 sales have seen a huge leap when compared to the previous quarter.

It seems that Apple’s presence in the Chinese market is growing steadily. Apple started this year a bit slow, as Apple reported that it had only sold 500,000 phones. However, things have improved thanks to the iPhone 11 and the new iPhone SE, and it seems that Apple has managed to sell 7.4 million units. In other words, Apple has managed to see a 225 percent increase in iPhone sales, which also results in a 62 percent yearly increase. We also see a 32 percent increase when we compare Q2 2020 to Q2 2019. Still, this isn’t enough for Apple to take the crown of phone sales in the Chinese market since Huawei still holds first place with 36.6 million sales, followed by OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi.

Qualcomm hints at a slight delay in the debut of Apple’s 5G iPhones

Apple is expected to launch a total of four new iPhone 12 series devices – some of them offering 5G support – later this year. While rumors of a delayed launch due to the coronavirus pandemic have been making rounds for a while, Qualcomm’s latest earnings report mentions a delay in the arrival of a “global 5G flagship phone.”

In the quarterly earnings report for Q3 2020, Qualcomm underlines a potential effect on the revenue forecasts due to the “impact of the delay of a 5G flagship phone launch” in the company’s financial guidance. Even though the Qualcomm report doesn’t mention a name, analysts believe the flagship 5G device in question is the iPhone 12 series.

But as per Qualcomm’s Chief Financial Officer Akash Palkhiwala, the delay might be brief. “We’re seeing a partial impact from the delay of a flagship phone launch. And so what we’ve seen is a slight delay that pushes some of the units out from the September quarter to the December quarter for us,” Palkhiwala was quoted as saying by Reuters.

OnePlus’ next Nord-series smartphone might use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 690 SoC

Just a day ago, we came to know that OnePlus is planning to launch a new Nord-series smartphone in the US market later this year. The folks over at XDA-Developers dug into the OxygenOS 10.5 build for OnePlus Nord and found evidence of a new OnePlus smartphone that might use Qualcomm’s latest budget 5G platform – the Snapdragon 690.

The OxygenOS code references an unannounced OnePlus device codenamed “Billie” alongside the model numbers “BE2025”, “BE2026”, “BE2028”, or “BE2029.” The model number falls in the numerical naming strategy for OnePlus Nord and the successive number identifiers for different markets. Those particular model numbers are associated with the term “SM6350”, which turns out to be the part number for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G SoC.

The code also suggests that there might two variations of the upcoming OnePlus device with the internal name “Billie.” While details remain scarce, it appears that the upcoming OnePlus Nord-series smartphone might be more affordable, given the hierarchical positioning of the Snapdragon 690 SoC below the Snapdragon 765G silicon that powers the OnePlus Nord.

Here’s your first detailed look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G

Earlier this month, a blurry render of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G surfaced online, giving us an idea of how the phone roughly looks. Today, leakster Ishan Agarwal has posted (via MySmartPrice) high resolution renders of the upcoming Samsung foldable smartphone in all its glory and in multiple color options.

Just as the leaks have indicated in the past, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G’s cover display is taller with a waterdrop notch and has a much higher screen-to-body ratio compared to the one on its predecessor. Over at the back, we see a triple rear camera setup encased in a module that looks much like the one on the Galaxy Note 20.

Unfolding the device reveals the foldable inner display, and it is where Samsung has made the biggest change. Unlike its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G has a hole-punch drilled in the right side of the panel. As per the tipster, the phone comes in two colors – Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze. Notably, Samsung has retained the side-mounted fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 might also get a pricey Thom Browne edition

Samsung unveiled a special edition Thom Browne Edition of the Galaxy Z Flip earlier this year, targeted at those who want a touch of high fashion for their foldable smartphone. It appears that Samsung’s upcoming foldable offering – the Galaxy Z Fold 2 – will also get the same luxury treatment created in collaboration with the eponymous US-based designer.

As per the latest Weibo post from leakster IceUniverse, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will also be offered in a Thom Browne edition. And just like the luxurious Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne edition, buyers will find a smartwatch and true wireless earbuds flaunting the same design language.

In case of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne edition, the accessories bundled inside the package will reportedly include the upcoming Galaxy Watch 3 Titanium Edition smartwatch and the Galaxy Buds Live true wireless earbuds. The price? Well, you might have to pay north of an eye-watering CNY 20,000 (~ $2,800) for all that limited edition luxury and bragging rights.
