In October last year, it was reported that Qualcomm was working on a gaming smartphone in partnership with Asus, with both companies said to be considering a joint purchase of components. However, it appears that the gaming-centric device might not be a phone, but a Nintendo Switch-like gaming console that runs Android 12 with a custom launcher on top and access to the full suite of Google’s apps and services that you get on your bread-and-butter Android phone.
As per a report by Android Police that cites sources familiar with the matter, the Qualcomm device will have detachable controllers a la the Joycons on Nintendo’s handheld console. And just like the Nintendo Switch, Qualcomm’s Android-powered console will let you connect it with a TV and play games on a larger screen. As per XDA-Developers Editor-in-chief Mishaal Rahman, the device will feature a 6.5-inch FHD+ display and will support a fan as well. Oddly, it won’t let you make calls, or do your regular telephony stuff.
I heard it’ll have a 6.65″ Full HD+ display, a 6000mAh battery, and support a fan. It apparently doesn’t even have a rear camera.
You can see some work for a fan controller in CAF: https://t.co/hfOxIfVzi9
— Mishaal Rahman (@MishaalRahman) March 23, 2021
The gaming-centric gadget will reportedly be fitted with a 6,000mAh battery that supports the proprietary Quickcharge fast charging technology. By opting for a larger handheld console form factor, Qualcomm is getting rid of the cramped space issue in today’s thin and light phones which prove to be an issue when it comes to managing heat. The upcoming console will reportedly exploit the extra space it gets to make the SoC powering it run faster and more efficiently by evading the thermal throttling issue.
Notably, Qualcomm’s handheld console is said to be missing out on cameras. The chipmaker is reportedly eyeing a Q1 2022 release for its gaming-centric device. 5G will be a part of the package as well, but Qualcomm will reportedly fit the older X55 5G modem inside the device, and not the more recent X60 modem. Coming to the pricing part, the company is said to be targeting an asking price of around $300, but there is no clarity if that includes the detachable controllers as well.
Qualcomm might use its upcoming handheld console as a reference device to showcase the potential of a new form factor. And now that platforms like Stadia, Microsoft’s xCloud, Amazon’s Luna, and NVIDIA GeForce Now have brought console games to mobile devices – and 5G is there to provide the necessary bandwidth – Qualcomm might be looking to make a statement here that a new class of Android-powered gaming devices should become mainstream. At this point, it is hard to comment on what lies ahead, and it is also plausible that the project might eventually end up in the trash can.

The Switch consoles have proved to be a smash hit for Nintendo, selling almost 80 million units since its debut and bringing a monster quarter in the 2020 holiday season. Now, the company is looking to further milk the Switch cash cow by launching a newer model packing a bigger display. As per a Bloomberg report, Nintendo is sourcing OLED panels from Samsung and plans to launch a new Switch console later this year. Production of the larger 7-inch HD display will reportedly begin as early as June, with the likelihood of an official debut in the 2021 holiday season.
“Samsung Display Co. will start mass production of 7-inch, 720p-resolution OLED panels as early as June with an initial monthly target of just under a million units, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters. The displays are slated for shipment to assemblers around July, the people said.” |
The current Nintendo Switch model comes equipped with a 6.2-inch LCD display with HD resolution, while the Nintendo Switch Lite has a smaller 5.5-inch display with the same resolution. We’ve been hearing rumors about an upgraded Switch model for a while now, but the company has refuted those claims in the past, stressing that it is currently focusing on diversifying the library of games for two existing Switch models.
An upgrade to an OLED display promises better colors with deeper blacks and improved contrast. Moreover, OLED panels are less taxing on the battery, which means more playtime per charge. However, Nintendo has gone with rigid OLED screens which are cheaper but more fragile compared to flexible OLED panels that you’ll find on many high-end smartphones out there. A previous rumor that emerged last year claimed that the next Switch console could use Samsung and AMD components.
It is unclear if Nintendo will use a high refresh rate OLED panel on its upcoming Switch console. However, the report cites sources who claim that the new Nintendo console will support 4K gameplay when connected to a TV. Additionally, it is unclear if Nintendo will also jazz up the internals of its upcoming Switch model. In case the housing remains the same, we might see a larger 7-inch OLED display with slimmer bezels compared to the existing model flaunting a 6.2-inch display.

Good news, Xbox fans. You no longer have to pay more for the Xbox Live Gold service, and can now enjoy free-to-play games on your console without paying for te service either. Earlier today, Microsoft announced a price hike for its Xbox Live Gold subscription service. The move didn’t sit well with a lot of people, with many calling it a greedy move to shove the pricier Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription service down every gamer’s throats. Plus, forcing users to pay for a Live Gold subscription even if they wanted to enjoy a free-to-play game on their Xbox console was also a terrible idea.
Well, it appears that the backlash has finally reach the Microsoft headquarters, as the company is reversing the price hike and is also ending the Live Gold requirement for free-to-play games. Here’s Microsoft’s full statement:
We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing. We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. For free-to-play games, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months. If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months. |
To bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience we will be removing Gold requirements for free-to-play games.
— Xbox (@Xbox) January 23, 2021
We're starting work on that immediately and will have updates in the coming months. Details: https://t.co/tWomNAwmp9
However, Microsoft’s offer to convert Live Gold membership into an Xbox Game Pass subscription at no additional cost still stands. So, if you want to make the jump, you can convert up to 36-months of Live Gold subscription into the much better Game Pass Ultimate membership that offers a lot more perks such as access to Xbox games on PC, cloud gaming on mobile and tablet to name a few. Here’s a quick comparison for your convenience:

In what can be called a not-very-surprising move, Sony has decided to pull Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store. Yes, it was due to complaints of disgruntled players who came across way too many bugs on the PlayStation 4 version of the game. Ever since the game’s launch, it became apparent that the PC version and the build released for next-gen consoles (read: PlayStation and Xbox Series S/X) was much better compared to the experience you get on the PS4 and Xbox One. Even CD Projekt Red’s business development SVP, Michal Nowakowski, had to admit in an investor call that the game was not well-optimized for the previous-gen consoles.
“SIE strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, therefore we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store. SIE will also be removing Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation Store until further notice,” said Sony’s statement on the PlayStation Store. “Once we have confirmed that you purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store, we will begin processing your refund. Please note that completion of the refund may vary based on your payment method and financial institution.”

— Ask PlayStation (@AskPlayStation) December 18, 2020
To recall, CD Projekt Red recently announced that it would offer refunds to players who were dissatisfied with how the game performed, but the actual process of claiming the refund left many frustrated. It was later revealed that CD Project Red’s decision to offer refunds was not actually cleared by the two main distributing partners at the time – Sony and Microsoft. With Sony officially throwing in the towel and promising players a refund, the process of getting your money back will likely be a lot smoother.
Choppy frame rates, screen-tearing, and weird-game physics were among the issues reported by Cyberpunk 2077 players who experienced it on the PS4 and Xbox One. Some of the glaring differences between the PC and console experience even became the butt of jokes online and have now been immortalized as memes in the gaming community. Remember #Cyberbug2077 trending on Twitter?
Criticism aside, it is unclear when Cyberpunk 2077 will be back on the PlayStation Store. CD Projekt Red has already revealed that it will release two large patches – one in January and the second in February – that will fix some of the biggest performance issues that players came across in Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The PlayStation 5 price in India is set at INR 49,990. On the other hand, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will carry a price tag of Rs 39,990. In comparison, the devices will sell in the US for $499.99 (~INR 36,700), and $399.99 (~INR 29,400) respectively. The company has also revealed the price of DualSense controller in India. It will cost users INR 5,990. Further, the HD Camera will be made available for INR 5,190, while the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset will sell for INR 8,590. While Sony has not revealed the availability details of PlayStation 5 in India yet, the company had suggested November 19 as the launch date recently. However, it later redacted that date from its website.

So far, we’ve only had glimpses of Sony’s PlayStation 5 from the official reveal and a few videos from Japanese publications, but nothing too detailed about its inner hardware. Well, the wait ends now, thanks to Sony’s official teardown video of its latest console. Yasuhiro Ootori – VP of Mechanical Design Department, Hardware Design Division at Sony Interactive Entertainment – meticulously took apart the PlayStation 5 on video while explaining the engineering that went behind it. However, the two aspects that stood out the most about the PlayStation 5 are its ingeniously designed stand and the use of liquid metal for cooling.
Starting with the stand, it looks like a disc with a slight incline and two claws. Notably, the stand is put to use irrespective of whether the console is kept vertically or placed horizontally on a table. When standing vertically, a single metallic screw at the base is used to hold the stand and the rest of the console in place. Now, if you want to position it vertically, it is easy too, but you must first worry about safely storing the screw. Or NOT.
The stand’s underside has a small compartment where the screw can be safely kept. Now, all you have to do is rotate the top of the stand and the screw will be safely sealed in the compartment. And if you’re worried about the screw hole at the base being visible while the console is kept horizontally, Sony also hides a small plastic screw in the aforementioned compartment that can be used to cover the screw hole. Neat, isn’t it? Now, you can use the stand’s claws to clip it alongside the real panel, while the flat portion cushions the sides as the PlayStation 5 is laid horizontally.
The other interesting thing we learned from the PlayStation 5 teardown video is that Sony has used liquid metal for cooling. Now, this is not a first, as Asus has already showcased it on video and plans to use the novel solution in its ROG-branded gaming laptops soon. However, it is by no means an easy feat to achieve inside a console, as Sony claims to have spent over two years trying to fine-tune the liquid metal technology and getting it ready for the PlayStation 5.
The liquid metal plays the role of a Thermal Interface Material (TIM) to draw heat from the processor and direct it to the huge heat sink inside the PlayStation 5. Ootori pointed out that the liquid metal solution is as effective as the vapor chamber technique, which Microsoft has adopted for its own next-gen console – the Xbox Series X – without namedropping it. The Sony executive also mentioned that using liquid metal instead of the conventional thermal paste as TIM ensures “long-term, stable, high-cooling performance.”
Sony’s official PlayStation 5 teardown video also reveals the M.2 slot that can be used to expand the storage using compatible PCIe 4.0 drives. Additionally, the two dust catchers are easily accessible, which means all foreign particles can be vacuumed out without breaking a sweat by just removing the two side panels with bare hands. On the front, you’ll find a USB Type-C port and a USB 2.0 Type-A port.
The rear panel has two USB 3.1 Type-A ports without a 10Gbps output, sitting alongside an ethernet port and an HDMI port. The console is also claimed to be quieter, despite using a larger, double-sided fan with a 120mm diameter and 45mm thickness. Overall, it appears that the PlayStation 5 won’t be a repairability nightmare. You can watch the entire teardown video below:
