I have no interest in the new iPad Pro, iMac, or AirTags

Earlier this week, Apple announced a bunch of new stuff on a video live stream. We’ve got new commercials for Apple TV shows, a purple iPhone, Podcast stuff, an Apple TV remote that actually makes sense, some AirTags, new iMacs, and a new iPad Pro.

AirTags

The first really new Apple product for 2021 was the AirTags, and I immediately said, “Welcome to 2013!”  AirTags are little battery-powered Bluetooth things that connect to your iPhone and help the iPhone’s “Find My” software keep track of the locations of the tags. Sounds familiar because these kinds of things have been around for many years. A company called Tile was one of the first to release this type of gadget back in 2013.

Nokia released a similar Nokia Treasure Tag in early 2014 that had similar functionality. I had a bunch of Nokia Treasure Tags attached to my Nokia Lumia 1020 and they certainly worked as advertised… just the same as today’s Apple AirTags. I stopped using them after getting a new phone because they were kind of a hassle. I mean, how many batteries do I have to keep around and keep replacing? Sure, the removable battery can be replaced pretty quickly, but still, it’s another thing to manage, and I never lost anything while I was using the Treasure Tags anyway. So what’s the point? It costs more cognitive energy paying attention to the battery levels of all of these tags than it costs to remember where whatever it’s attached to is in the first place.

iMac

The new iMacs are bringing back a rainbow of color options like the original iMac had in 1998. It has Apple’s new M1 processor, an extra thin form factor, and it comes in 7 colors. That’s cool and all, but the front has a big pastel-colored chin and a white bezel that looks really bad to me. What’s more, is that the white bezel is going to interfere with your white balance perception since that will reflect the color temperature of your ambient lighting instead of the color temperature of the display.  Looks like the display is still pretty reflective too, so glare will still be a problem. That’s not so good for creative professionals.

Having the computer really thin is nice I guess, but how much does that really matter?  The stand is still pretty thick, so it’s not going to save a whole lot of desk space. Maybe it makes the iMac easier to move, but if I’m going to put a computer on a desk, that’s probably where it’s going to stay until I replace it. That being said, I have seen iMacs that need replacing kind of frequently, so maybe that is a good thing since we’ve had to carry them to the car and then to the Apple store for repair kind of often. That’s in contrast to the HP workstation where a repair person just comes to the office and replaces parts right there under warranty the next morning.

iPad Pro

Apple’s new Center Stage feature for video calls on the iPad Pro is probably the most impressive feature, but again… “Welcome to 2010, Apple!” This awesome feature was something that first appeared 11 years ago in Video Kinect for Xbox. Honestly, it makes way more sense having this feature plugged into a big screen TV than it does an iPad. You’ll need to set the iPad on a stand to make any use of it, and as you move away the people on the screen will look so much smaller. With Xbox Kinect and a big TV, I could walk around the whole room and the video call camera would follow me beautifully.  It was even cooler when the person on the other end had the same thing in their living room… we could both walk around doing other stuff and it was like there was a camera crew focusing on our faces on the TV.

The iPad Pro does have a new mini-LED display now that’s supposed to display color better, but it’s still a glossy screen that’s going to have a lot of glare when using it in real life. Apple’s video looks to be extremely processed to remove or hide the glare of the environment completely. It looks super fake because it is. That’s not how the screen is going to look in real life.

I’ve never thought that the iPad Pro deserved the “Pro” moniker. It’s not great for creative pro stuff anyway. See “13 Reasons why I don’t use an iPad Pro & Apple Pencil for graphic design“. The M1 processor and 16GB of RAM options in the new iPad Pro seem like kind of a waste since it won’t run really high-end programs like those available on macOS.

Amazon is giving up to $120 savings on several iPad models

We start today’s deals with some nice alternatives for anyone who’s been looking for a new iPad. We’re not sure if we will get new iPads during the upcoming Apple “Spring Loaded” event that’s scheduled for April 20, but maybe that’s why we keep on getting great savings on the latest iPad Pro models. You can get the new 12.9-inch Pro model with 128GB of storage space and WiFi-only support for $949 with $50 savings on its Silver variant, but if you want to save more, grab the Space Gray model, as it’s $52 off, leaving it at $947.

Of course, you can also choose to score $100 savings when you grab the 256GB storage variant since it’s selling for $999. Get the same $100 savings on the 512GB option in Space Gray, as it can be yours for $1,199, even though I’d suggest you consider the Silver variant, as it’s getting a whopping $120 discount, meaning you can get one for $1,179.

Now, if we focus on the smaller, 11-inch iPad Pro, you can grab one starting at $749 with $50 savings when you choose the WiFi-only option with 128GB storage. Double the storage and still manage to squeeze in a $49 discount, which leaves it at $850. Unfortunately, the 512GB is not on sale, but you can score a $100 discount when you grab the 1TB storage option in Space Gray. The Silver model will only get you $70 savings, but it’s still not a bad deal since you can get yours for $1,199 and $1,179, respectively.

Now, the latest iPad Air is also getting some love. You can grab a new model with a 10.9-inch display, Wi-Fi support, and 64GB of storage space for just $559, which translates into $40 savings. And if you want more storage space, you can grab the 256GB option for $699 after a $50 discount applied to every color variant, except for the Silver one. You can also get your hands on a new 10.2-inch iPad and save $34. Unfortunately, the only one on sale is the 128GB option in Gold, which sells for $395.

And if you’re already planning on getting a new tablet, you must also consider getting a new Apple Pencil. The second-generation Apple Pencil is currently getting a $9.99 discount, which means you can get yours for $115. This model is compatible with the latest iPad Pro models, as well as the fourth-generation iPad Air. And if you have an older model or go for the latest 10.2-inch entry-level variant, you can also grab the first-generation Apple Pencil for $94 after a $5 discount.

Discord plans to block NSFW communities and channels on iOS devices

Discord is one of the most popular messaging platforms in existence, with a focus on conversations in dedicated channels and communities (sometimes called ‘servers’) over 1-to-1 communication. However, there is now one catch to using Discord on iOS: servers marked as NSFW are inaccessible.

Discord announced a policy change yesterday (via The Verge), explaining that all adult content should be kept behind an NSFW (‘Not Safe For Work’) warning. The platform has allowed individual channels to be marked as NSFW for years, but now entire communities can have the warning. No one between the ages of 13 and 17 will be able to join or view NSFW communities. If communities with adult content don’t add the warning themselves, Discord may do it on their behalf.

More importantly, NSFW communities and channels will be blocked on all iOS devices, even for people over the age of 18. “iOS users aged 18+ will still be able to join and access NSFW communities on the desktop and web versions of Discord,” the company said.

The move is likely intended to keep Discord on the App Store, as Apple has historically blocked apps that feature or promote adult content. Tumblr famously banned all NSFW content from its platform in 2018, only days after Apple removed its app from the App Store. Tumblr was allowed to return to the App Store shortly afterwards, but not before the platform experienced a mass exodus of users upset at the NSFW ban.

Discord users are already criticizing the company for the new policy, for most of the same reasons that Tumblr users spoke out in 2018. Some believe the move could adversely affect LGBT+ communities (YouTube has a long history of this, for example), while others are concerned that many art communities could be incorrectly marked as NSFW.

It remains to be seen if Discord will lose any significant market share over its new policy. However, it’s not hard to see the platform as stuck between a wall and a hard place — Discord can either play by Apple’s draconian rules, or say goodbye to all iOS users.

iPad and MacBook production faces delay as global chip shortage hits Apple

Looks like the global semiconductor crunch has finally hit Apple. As per a report by Nikkei Asia, the production of some MacBooks and iPads has been delayed owing to the worldwide chip shortage that has put the automobile as well as consumer electronics industry under severe stress. As the demand has shot up and continues to outweigh the supply, Apple faces a tough task ahead as the company prepares a highly anticipated slate of products that includes redesigned Macs with in-house silicon, upgraded iPad Pro models with a new display technology, and of course, the upcoming iPhone 13 family.

“Chip shortages have caused delays in a key step in MacBook production — the mounting of components on printed circuit boards before final assembly — sources briefed on the matter told Nikkei Asia. Some iPad assembly, meanwhile, was postponed because of a shortage of displays and display components, sources said.
As a result of the delay, Apple has pushed back a portion of component orders for the two devices from the first half of this year to the second half, the people said.”

As per the publication’s sources, the production of iPads has also been postponed due to the shortage of displays and display components. In MacBook’s production, the step of mounting the components on printed circuit boards just before the final assembly is being affected. Hence, Apple is now pushing back a part of its component orders for both products from the first half of this year to the second half.

So far, iPhones have remained immune to the chip supply woes

However, it is unclear if the production delay concerns only iPad and Macbook models that are already on the shelves, or if the semiconductor shortage has also affected the production of the yet-to-be-launched models too. And even though the production of iPhones has not been hit, the report mentions that the supply of some components is ‘quite tight.’ As per a Bloomberg report from earlier this month, ‘the tightened supply of Qualcomm AP chips produced by TSMC is affecting everybody except Apple.’

iPhone 12

Apple is known to have a solid supply chain control mechanism, and also commands a ‘priority client’ status. And that means it is among the few big brands with the luxury of a steady component supply while smaller names are hit by upheaval in the notoriously complex semiconductor industry. Foxconn, Apple’s key manufacturing partner, revealed earlier in March that its shipments will reduce by 10% due to the global chip shortage.

Key Apple supplier Foxconn has already announced 10% cutdown in shipments

Industry sources believe that delays are a sign that the chip shortage is growing more serious, which could in turn, impact smaller tech firms even more adversely. So far, the production of iPhones has not been affected by the supply shortage. The report goes on to say that the component shortage remains a supply chain issue for Apple, but it hasn’t yet had an impact on product availability for consumers.

We really don’t see an end to this shortage, and things could be even worse, looking ahead to the end of the June quarter, as some smaller tech players could run out of some critical inventories to build their products and need to scale back production,” said Wallace Gou, president and CEO of Silicon Motion, a NAND flash memory controller chip developer that supplies Samsung, Western Digital, Micron, Kingston and many others. If you’re looking for an in-depth take on the ongoing semiconductor crunch and how it is affecting everything from phones to cars, read this excellent Bloomberg explanation.
