Nothing acquires Essential

Let’s move on to Carl Pei and Nothing as, which clearly does not stand for the amount of cash they hold, as there’s somewhat of a major surprise to discuss here. Just as a recap, back in December the company received $7M in funding and a couple of weeks ago, Carl Pei announced that his new company would be called “Nothing” and talked a little bit about their philosophy. Now, a new report from 9to5Google shows some resent filings at the UK Intellectual Property Office that reveal that Andy Rubin has sold his Essential Brand to Carl Pei’s Nothing Technologies Limited. The application was actually made back in November, with the process being completed on January 6th. Therefore, the trademarks, logo and the Essential Brand is now part of Nothing. We Essentially have Nothing here.. Get it? So far we still have no concrete information on what Nothing is planning on releasing with rumors hinting to wireless earbuds and even smart home technology but, the recent announcements claimed that we should expect it soon. If you think about it, they now have access to Ambient OS, and numerous patents Essential was working on so, let’s see what and when we get it.

HUAWEI P50 series rumored to launch next month with three models in tow

Let’s talk about Huawei for a second as, we’re currently due for a refresh of the company’s P Series. And of course, we know that they’re going through a lot of uncertainty at the moment as, even their SoC production is limited due to the restrictions. However, we have a new leak from a tipster on Twitter that claims that, the Huawei P50 Series is ready for mass production, as the final design is locked. The tweet claims that we’ll be getting 3 models like we did last year with the P50, P50 Pro and P50 Pro+, all with a new design. Finally he claims that the Selling Points here will be the screen quality, some new ultra sensing camera system and the gaming capabilities. Now, according to another tipster, the P50 Series will go official somewhere around March 26th to March 28th. Last year we got this phone in April, but without Google Play services, who knows how this launch will go once again.

Apple may be planning to give stylus support to its first foldable iPhone

Finally, for the hottest news today let’s talk Apple and their upcoming launches. And I know, it’s kind of early for the hottest news but it’s because we’ll be splitting it into 2 segments. Let’s start with the foldable iPhone as, we’ve been hearing a ton of feasible rumors lately. According to some research from a firm called Equal Ocean, the foldable iPhone will arrive with Apple Pencil support, though even if it says current models, we’re not sure if it’s Pencil 1 or 2. They also predict that it will arrive with the clamshell design like Prosser mentioned last week and it will feature a foldable OLED display between 7.3 and 7.6 inches. If you remember what we covered last week, Prosser claims that this foldable iPhone will come with several colorful and fun colorways, to market it to a younger audience. And guys we know, rumors for foldable iPhones have been going on for years now but, it looks like we’re finally getting somewhere with dates pointing on to 2023 or a little bit later. Let’s see where Samsung is by then with the Z Flip as well as by then it’ll be a pretty mature lineup.

Story of the day:

iPhone 13 could finally get an always on display and other great features

Finally, again, for the second hottest news today, let’s talk iPhone 12s.. Yes, make peace with the name, but it doesn’t sound like if this lineup will be bad at all. So far we’ve been hearing very consistent rumors that this will be an S year with the same camera design but with improved internals, a shorter notch, all paired with better internals. Now, we have a new report from Everything Apple Pro where he gives us more information on what to expect. First off he claims that the matte back of the phone will be getting refined, meaning the Pro models, saying they’ll have a slightly more grippy texturized back. This should make them more comfortable, kind of like the soft matte you get on the Pixel Series. Moving on to the front, he claims that we will finally be getting an always-on display thanks to the implementation of an LTPO panel, which also allows for variable 120hz. The Always-On Display will apparently have minimal customizability, kind of like a toned down lock screen. We even hear of an optical fingerprint scanner on the display instead of ultrasonic to keep the cost down, with the power button option maybe making it to a refresh of the SE. Finally, the video also mentions that we’ll be getting an improved camera with a better ultra wide lens, features like Portrait Video and more.

Qualcommā€™s new Snapdragon X65 5G modem brings a promise of 10Gbps internet speeds

Let’s move on to Qualcomm as, the company just announced the new Snapdragon X65 5G Modem which brings some crazy promises. This is the 4th generation for the company’s flagship modems if you think of it. The biggest promise here is that it brings 10 Gigabit 5G to the table thanks to a new Fixed Wireless Access Platform, becoming the first modem-RF system in the world to reach these numbers. This modem features an upgradeable architecture which will adapt via software updates, making it kind of future proof. Qualcomm also brings a new 4th-Gen mmWave antenna that claims to boost mmWave coverage as well as power efficiency, while supporting higher transmit power. It also relies on an AI Antenna Tuning technology to improve cellular performance and efficiency, letting you achieve faster speeds with better battery life. And guys, there’s actually a ton of more technical details and a full article at Pocketnow.com, I won’t bore you with the specifics but yeah, it all sounds *PRETTY* amazing.

Appleā€™s upcoming Mixed Reality headset gets concept rendered. Hey, Ready Player One!

Apple partners with TSMC to develop micro OLED display for its AR devices: Report

Now it’s time for Apple’s Mixed and Augmented Reality devices which have been making a lot of headlines. First off, we have some new concept renders which were created based on that sketch we got of them last week, which *I Agree*, look like a pair of AirPods Max laid down. In the visor you can tell from the outside that there’s multiple sensors and cameras that kind of look like Face ID but, these will reportedly keep track of you’re surroundings while you’re using the headset. From the inside you see the 2 displays which will reportedly be 8K panels, as well as a cushion and a slot for you’re nose. *I agree*, all seriously looks like if it came out of Ready Player One. Now, speaking of those 8K displays on the inside, we have a new report from Nikkei Asia that claims that Apple has tasked TSMC with developing micro-OLED displays that will be used in Augmented Reality Devices. These displays won’t be built into glass like you get with smartphones. Apparently, they will be built directly into wafers, and I also thought about cookies first, but this allows for the displays to be far thinner, smaller and more power efficient. Apparently the production of these displays is currently in trial phase, and mass production will actually take a few years to begin. We’ll see what we get and how much exactly is “a few years”.

More Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip2 details surface online

Moving the spotlight on to foldables, let’s talk Samsung which should have a pretty busy year. Recent leaks claim that we could have the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 as soon as July so naturally, leaks are starting to come in. Now we have a new report from Sam Mobile that gives us more details on what to expect. On the report, they shared the model number for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 along with the fact that it will be available with at least 256GB of storage, running Android 11 out of the box with a new One UI 3.5 on top. When it comes to the Z Flip 3, they shared the model number as well and it’ll apparently bring 128GB and 256GB storage options and running the same software combo. Back to the Z Fold, recently we got some renders that claimed that we should expect the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera module as well as an under the display selfie shooter but, we should take that with a grain of salt. What we are expecting is slightly smaller displays, in order to fit an S Pen inside the chassis. As for the Z Flip 3, we’re expecting it to bring a 120Hz display with slimmer bezels, and a design that resembles the regular S21 models. We don’t have much other information on the Z Flip or the rumored Z Flip Lite but, we’ll see what we end up getting.

Story of the day:

Leak suggests Google is drawing inspiration for Android 12 from iOS 14ā€™s privacy tools

And finally, for the hottest news today, let’s talk Android 12 as we’re getting closer to the announcement at least. A couple of recent reports claimed that Google wants to take a play out of Apple’s privacy book and well, we have some kind of confirmation now. We have some new screenshots of Android 12 recovered by XDA that show a few familiar changes if you’re rocking iOS 14. On the top right corner, you now get a green dot if the camera is being used, or an orange dot if the microphone was used recently. Google is also adding toggles for universally disabling the camera and microphone on the interface which is actually more than what Apple offers. Another change that resembles iOS 14 comes with the new widgets interface, *who would’ve thought*. But seriously, these now offer a cleaner look which allows for things to look better organized, instead of rounded corners on some and sharp ones on others. Going back a little to privacy, last week we covered how Google also wants to implement App Tracking Transparency but in less of a strict way than what Cupertino will bring with iOS 14.5. Keep in mind, these screenshots have not been confirmed and we’re still months away but, I mean privacy changes are always welcomed, especially from Google.

HUAWEI dealt another blow by US government that could cripple its PC business

Ever since the US government put HUAWEI on the entity list as well as the defense department’s military blacklist, the company has suffered a number of setbacks. Aside from shrinking market share, getting alienated from the offering a true-blue Android experience on its phones (prompting the company to work on its own app repository and operating system), and getting its chip supply chocked, it appears that the companyā€™s PC business is now in the red zone. The US government has told key HUAWEI suppliers – one of which happens to be Intel – that their trade license with the Chinese company has been revoked.Ā

After smartphones, the US government is looking to hurt HUAWEI's PC business

ā€œThe Trump administration notified Huawei suppliers, including chipmaker Intel, that it is revoking certain licenses to sell to the Chinese company and intends to reject dozens of other applications to supply the telecommunications firm,ā€ said a Reuters report. ā€œSources familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there was more than one revocation. One of the sources said eight licenses were yanked from four companies.ā€

When HUAWEI was first placed on the entity list, Intel was among the companies that received a license to supply its processors, among other equipment, to the Chinese company. But with the US government now sending notices to companies regarding its latest move, it appears that HUAWEIā€™s access to chips that go inside its laptop range is getting cut off for the foreseeable future. As per the report, a total of eight trade licenses granted to four US companies were revoked by the US government in its latest sweeping move.

The US government intends to revoke more trade licenses involving HUAWEI

Aside from Intel, Kioxia Corp – previously known as Toshiba Memory Corp – also had its license canceled. The notice sent by the US government reportedly includes a broad range of products in the semiconductor industry, and not just processors powering laptops. ā€œBefore the latest action, some 150 licenses were pending for $120 billion worth of goods and technology, which had been held up because various U.S. agencies could not agree on whether they should be granted, a person familiar with the matter said,ā€ the report adds.Ā

READ MORE: Huawei could be left without display and smartphone chip suppliers very soon

HUAWEI, which has been put on the entity list citing national security risk and on the military blacklist over its alleged ties with the Chinese military, has seen its supply of 5G telecom equipment and semiconductor technology choked in the wake of the US governmentā€™s crackdown. It is being speculated that the Chinese company likely wonā€™t be able to make an in-house flagship Kirin chip after the upcoming Kirin 9000 SoC that debuts later this year, primarily due to suppliers pulling away.

NVIDIA has had a busy day at CES 2021 today. The company has just announced the RTX 30 series GPUs for laptops based on the Ampere architecture.Ā The new mobile GPUs announced by NVIDIA include the GeForce RTX 3080, GeForce RTX 3070, and the GeForce RTX 3060. The first wave of laptops powered by the GeForce RTX 3080 and 3070 will hit the shelves starting January 26, while machines rocking the GeForce RTX 3060 GPU will make their way to the market next month.Ā

Higher efficiency, better performance and refined acoustics

Based on the 3rd Gen Max-Q technology, the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs for laptops are claimed to offer up to 2x ray-tracing throughput, thanks to the second-gen ray-tracing cores. Additionally, the 3rd gen tensor cores are also claimed to be 2x more capable compared to last-gen GPUs based on the Turing architecture. And thanks to support for the proprietary NVIDIA Reflex technology, the new laptop GPUs are said to further reduce latency and boost responsiveness.Ā

The third-gen Max-Q design is claimed to offer general improvements in areas such as efficiency, performance,Ā  battery, and even acoustics. With the RTX 30 series laptop graphics, NVIDIA is also introducing the Dynamic Boost 2.0 technology that relies on AI to adjust power uptake by the CPU, GPU, and GPU on a per-frame basis. This tech will be enabled by default on all laptops powered by the new NVIDIA mobile GPUs.Ā

Over 70 laptops with GeForce RTX 30 series GPU will debut this month

Another new tech debuting with the RTX 30 series GPUs for laptops is Whisper Mode 2.0 that is baked at the system level and dynamically adjusts settings (CPU, GPU, and game presets) as well as fan speed to offer the best audio output. Additionally, the Resizable BAR technology allows a laptopā€™s CPU to access the entire graphics memory of a GPU to boost performance (read: higher frame rates) while gaming. This feature will be available via driver updates.Ā

As for the laptops powered by NVIDIAā€™s new RTX 30 series mobile GPUs, some have already been announced such as the Razer Blade 15 Advanced, Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4, Asus TUF Gaming Dash F15, MSI GS66, and the Lenovo Legion 7 among others.Ā

In addition to RTX 30 series Max-Q graphics, NVIDIA has also unveiled the cheapest Ampere-based desktop GPU today – the GeForce RTX 3060. Priced at $329, it will be up for grabs next month and is being marketed as the entry-point into NVIDIAā€™s updated family of desktop graphics in the RTX 30 series. It is claimed to offer 2x boost at rester performance and 10x improvement in ray-tracing performance vis-a-vis the aging GeForce GTX 1060 GPU, one of the companyā€™s most popular graphics cards.Ā

GeForce RTX 3060 desktop GPU will hit the shelves in February

It packs 12GB of GDDR6 memory, and comes with the usual set of enhancements such as Resizeable BAR, second-gen ray-tracing cores, 3rd-gen Tensor cores to make the most its DLSS technology, NVIDIA Reflex, and NVIDIA Broadcast to name a few. Following is a graphical representation of the performance boost offered by the new NVIDIA desktop-class GPU:

Intel announces 11th Gen Core H-series mobile processors for gaming laptops

Intel has made a slew of announcements today its CES 2021 keynote, but one of the biggest revelations was the debut of a new line of processors. Yes, Intel today lifted the covers from its 11th Gen Tiger Lake H-series processors that will power the next wave of slim gaming laptops in 2021. Intel has announced two new H-series processors – three actually – if you consider the special edition model thrown into the mix, all of which are based on the 10nm process.Ā

10nm process, up to 5GHz clock speed, PCIe Gen 4 and Thunderbolt 4 support

The three new 11th Gen H-series mobile processors announced today include the Core i7-11375H Special Edition, Core i7-11370H and the Core i5-11300H, all of which pack four cores. Intel is labeling them H35, likely because their TDP peaks at a rather low 35W, and not in the 40W range you would expect for gaming-centric Intel silicon. Hereā€™s a quick breakdown of the three new Intel mobile processors:Ā

It is worth noting here that the Core i7-11375H touches a boost clock speed of 5GHz, which is unheard of in the world of mobile CPUs. Intel is touting it to be the ā€˜fastest single threaded laptop performanceā€™ and that the machines powered by it offer the ā€˜best balance of mobility and enthusiast level gaming.ā€™ The new 11th Gen Intel H-series processors support the PCIe Gen 4 standard and bring Killer Wi-Fi 6/6E compatibility to the table as well.

                                                  Only 4 cores, but a 15% boost in single-thread performance gen-over-gen

The new Intel offerings bring support for 3200MHz DDR4 memory (4266MHz for LPDDR4x), Thunderbolt 4 support, a 15% boost in single-thread performance compared to 10th Gen solutions, and a 40% jump in multi-thread performance compared to the 15W 11th Gen Intel mobile processors. Intel claims that its 11th Gen H-series mobile processors will provide enough power for playing games at 4K, while popular titles such as Valorant, Destiny 2 will clock at 1080p resolution with over 70FPS frame rate.

Intel will launch an 8-core 11th Gen H-series mobile processor soon

As per the company, its new mobile processors will appear in over 40 designs in the first half of 2021, with Acer, Asus, and MSI being the brands whose laptops will soon debut armed with the new Intel silicon. The new chips donā€™t support CPU, memory or graphics overlocking though. And if youā€™re not satisfied with the core count, Intel has promised to launch an 8-core 11th Gen H-series processor with up to 5GHz multi-core frequency later this year.Ā
