Apple’s iPhone XS, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and more are on sale

We start today’s deals with the iPhone XS that’s currently selling for just $350 at Woot.com. Now, before you get too excited, we have to say that this is a ‘Grade A Refurbished’ device. Still, paying just $350 for a 64GB iPhone XS is, without a doubt, a great deal. And since we’re already talking about Apple products, we must also remind you that the latest M1 powered Macs are on sale, and you can check them out here.

If you own an iPhone 12 Pro Max, and you’re looking to protect your investment, the Apple Leather Sleeve with MagSafe in Saddle Brown is getting a $38 discount, which means you can get one for just under $91. The Baltic Blue and Pink Citrus color options are also on sale, but they’re only getting around $4 and $7 savings.

The Apple Watch Series 6 is also getting some nice savings, as you can grab the 40mm version with GPS connectivity for just $374 after a $235 discount. And to make your device look even better, you can get an Anwaut Solid Stainless Steel Wristband for $14.40 with $5.50 savings. Now, moving on to Samsung devices, we find the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ getting a massive $480 discount over at B&H, which means you can grab yours for just $620. Now, this deal is almost as good as the ones available at Samsung.com, where you can get the latest Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series starting at $350. If you go for the entry-level variant with 128GB of storage space or the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, that can be yours for just $750 after trading-in an eligible device.

Further, you can also get a new Samsung Galaxy S21 for as low as $100 with an eligible trade-in. If you want the higher-end variants, you can get your hands on a Galaxy S21+ for $300 or the Galaxy S21 Ultra for $500; it will all depend on the phone you have to trade-in. The best part is that you can also get up to $100 instant credit to use towards Samsung’s online store devices and accessories. And if you’re really looking for another device that won’t break the bank, you can also consider a new Nokia 5.4 with Dual SIM support and 128GB of storage space that’s now available for $200 after getting a $50 discount.

Google cuts Play Store commission fee to 15% for most developers

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Google announced today that it is halving its Play Store commission fee from 30% to 15%. However, there is a catch. The fee is being reduced to 15% for the first $1M USD of revenue every developer earns each year. This means, the company will charge the usual 30% commission if your app has earned $1M USD.

Google wrote in a blog post that it chose $1M USD as the threshold because “we’ve heard from our partners making $2M, $5M and even $10M a year that their services are still on a path to self-sustaining orbit.”

The latest move from Google follows the footsteps of Apple. In late 2020, the Cupertino giant reduced its 30% App Store commission to 15% under its Small Business Program.

Google’s reduced commission will come into effect starting July 1, 2021. According to the company, 99% of developers will benefit from this move. “With this change, 99% of developers globally that sell digital goods and services with Play will see a 50% reduction in fees. These are funds that can help developers scale up at a critical phase of their growth by hiring more engineers, adding to their marketing staff, increasing server capacity, and more,” wrote Google.

The whole reduce-the-fee movement started with the Apple-Epic Games fiasco where Fortnite was banned from the App Store in August, 2020. Further, Apple just terminated Epics Developer Account, to which Epic responded by taking it up the legal way. Apple also had spats with Facebook, Microsoft, and WordPress who accused Apple of forcing to add in-app purchases in some way or the other.

Interestingly, Google’s fee cut comes after it doubled-down on its 30% commission in September last year. It announced that apps submitted this year will have to rely on Google Play Store’s native billing system for in-app payments. As a result, it would ensure that Google gets its cut of 30% for purchases made via apps downloaded from the Play Store. However, that fee is now being halved for most developers.

Signal app for Android now lets you migrate account data to another device

Privacy-focused messaging platform – Signal – has lately surged in popularity, and is quickly adding new features to cash in on the opportunity as more users come to it after ditching WhatsApp. The latest addition comes in the form of a data transfer tool that allows users to migrate their entire profile information and the associated data such as chats from one Android device to another. No more having to rely on local or cloud-based backups.

A similar feature for Signal's iOS app has existed for a while now

The latest feature is called ‘Transfer account’ and it has arrived with version 5.5 of Signal app’s beta version. First shared on the unofficial r/signal community thread on Reddit, the new tool relies on an encrypted local Wi-Fi Direct network to transfer the account information from one device to another. Here’s what the changelog says:

“Your next upgrade deserves an upgrade. Quickly and securely transfer your Signal information to a brand-new Android phone. Use the end-to-end encrypted migration feature to move your account and messages from an old device to a new device over a private local WiFi Direct connection.”

The new Transfer account feature can be accessed from within the Chats section in the app’s settings menu. And as per the steps listed in the app, the process of transferring Signal account information from one Android device to another is fairly easy. All you have to do is download the app on the other device and tap on the transferor restore option while setting up. Now, hit the transfer option on your old device when prompted, followed by the Continue button.

Since the data transfer takes place over a Wi-Fi Direct channel, Signal suggests that you keep both the devices close to each other to avoid any connectivity issues. In case you are on the Signal app’s stable version and want to try out the new Transfer account feature, you can switch to the beta channel for Android here

What’s your flavor? Apple reportedly bringing color options to the 2021 iMac

Safe to assume that on a slow February Wednesday, there’s nothing really going on that rocks the boat in tech world. Nothing, however, compares to a fresh, juicy Apple leak (in case you needed more of those) coming from none other than Jon Prosser via Twitter and YouTube.

As you’ve probably guessed by now, from the title and the thumbnail, the rumor talks about Apple allegedly offering future customers the option to choose a color option for their upcoming iMac desktop computers.

Five are illustrated in the image, with the classic silver and the darker shade (reserved for the exclusive iMac Pro), in addition to green, blue, and pink (with whatever denomination Apple could come up with to describe the shades). These shades will reportedly mirror the colors the iPad Air is currently available in.

Rumors of a redesign coming to the iMac have been around for quite some time, but if Apple couples the redesign (and the addition of the M1 chip version) with an expanded range of color options to choose from, it will give users the liberty to get the one that best suits their personality, or environment. It’s like 1998 again! You know, when there was actually a color choice involved.

Not only that, but there’s chatter about a possible, smaller Mac Pro. No, not a smaller cheese grater, this upcoming model is being described more along the lines of “three-to-four Mac minis stacked”. This should give you an idea about the size, but the actual design, though some have attempted to predict it, is yet unknown.

Malware targeting Apple’s new M1 Macs has already been spotted in the wild

It’s barely been a few months since Apple launched the first wave of Mac hardware powered by the in-house M1 silicon, but malware targeting it has already been spotted in the wild. First spotted by cybersecurity researcher Patrick Wardle and subsequently detailed on Objective-See, the M1 malware was actually disguised as a Safari extension that was originally compiled for systems running x86-based Intel processors and was later recompiled for the ARM ecosystem to run natively on the new Macs.

The security community doesn’t have signatures to detect these threats yet

The full application bundle that was source of the malware was called GoSearch22.app, whose certificate Apple has now revoked. While the risk posed by this specific malware is not too high now, the fact that it has been discovered in the wild is the more worrisome aspect. First, it is quite evident that this recompiled malware had been targeting Macs based on Intel as well as Apple’s own M1 silicon, which means its reach is far wider.

READ MORE: Apple is experimenting with Titanium for making MacBooks and iPads

Second, and the more scary side of the latest discovery is that malicious parties have already started working on malware that targets the ARM-based M-series silicon that will now appear in more Macs in the years to come. While that is definitely alarming, the situation becomes ever more tricky for cybersecurity experts and firms that make malware-detecting tools, because they don’t know much about M1 malware signatures, the likes of which have just been discovered in the open.

Malicious actors are already making malware targeting M1 Macs, which is worrisome

And with little to no knowledge about the threat they face, it is difficult to make a suitable software solution that can effectively target and eliminate the impending wave of malware targeting the M1 Macs. “Secondly, and more worrisomely, (static) analysis tools or anti-virus engines may struggle with arm64 binaries”, Wardle notes in his in-depth analysis.

READ MORE: Next MacBook Air: Thinner, lighter, smaller, more powerful

“Watching malware make the transition from Intel to M1 rapidly is concerning, because security tools aren’t ready to deal with it. The security community doesn’t have signatures to detect these threats yet, since they haven’t been observed,” Tony Lambert, intelligence analyst at security firm Red Canary was quoted as saying by WIRED. Additionally, researchers from the aforementioned firm are also said to be investigating another native M1 malware that looks distinct from the corrupt Safari extension.

Apple’s next-gen iPad Pro and AirTags object tracker rumored to arrive next month

Apple is rumored to launch its next-gen iPad Pro in Q1 2020, and if leaks are anything to go by, the tablet will also make the jump to a new display technology called mini LED. Now, leakster Jon Prosser has added more fuel to those rumors, claiming that the new iPad Pro will be launched in March. Additionally, the tipster also mentioned that the AirTags object tracker might finally see the light of the day next month as well.

Familiar design with a major display technology upgrade

Just like last year, Apple is said to offer the upcoming iPad Pro in two screen sizes – 11-inch and 12.9-inch. As per alleged CAD-based schematics, the design language of Apple’s upcoming iPad will remain almost identical to that of its predecessor. You get two cameras at the back sitting alongside a LiDAR sensor in a squircle module. Over at the front, there will be symmetrically thin bezels on all sides.

For a while now, we’ve been hearing rumors that the next iPad Pro will make the switch to a mini LED display. In case you’re unaware, a mini LED mimics the inherent design of an OLED panel, and is said to offer much deeper blacks, improved contrast, and higher brightness compared to LCD panels.

READ MORE: A little something about Mini LED tech coming to LG TVs, and soon on Apple products too

However, all the rumors in the past have pointed to the presence of a mini LED panel on the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro in 2021, and not its smaller 11-inch sibling. While the same can’t be said with certainty, it appears that Apple will stick to an LCD display with ProMotion and True Tone tech for the 11-inch iPad Pro this year. Additionally, the next iPad Pro might bundle in support for mmWave 5G as well.

AirTags might finally launch next month

Notably, Prosser has also claimed that the AirTags – Apple’s long-rumored and oft-delayed object tracker – might finally make their official debut next month. Previously, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also predicted that the Apple object tracker will arrive in 2021. Third-party AirTags accessories from brands like Spigen have already been listed online and a hidden ‘Items’ tab in Apple’s Find My app has also been spotted, indicating that the launch of AirTags is indeed on the horizon.

Foldable iPhone to arrive with clamshell design and many color options?

We’ve been getting tons of rumors concerning Apple’s foldable iPhone project. The last rumor suggests that Apple may have already decided on the basic design for its new device. Jon Prosser has been posting several reports about this new foldable device on his YouTube channel Front Page Tech, where he now gives us a couple of new updates about the upcoming smartphone.

According to Jon Prosser and his sources, Apple may have already decided to follow the path of a future iPhone with a clamshell design. Earlier reports claimed that Apple was working on two foldable iPhones. The first device is believed to have a design that resembles the one we see on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, while the second one would look more like the Galaxy Z Flip or the Moto RAZR. Prosser’s sources aren’t sure why Apple has opted for a clamshell design or why it is now getting more attention over the other form factor. Maybe Apple’s durability tests have favored the hinge in this variant instead of the other model, or maybe Apple’s recent partnership with Samsung, who’ll be manufacturing the foldable display panels for these devices.

The second leak is even more interesting, as the new foldable iPhone is also expected to arrive with more color options. Why is this interesting, you ask? Well, you just have to take a look at Apple’s recent iPhone 12 and any other iPhone lineup. You will see that the base iPhone models are the ones to get several color options, while the higher-end variants usually arrive with fewer color options to choose from. In other words, this could mean that Apple may want to target a wider audience with these devices, well, if it finally manages to make it happen. Prosser also believes that the new foldable iPhone won’t arrive next year, as some have suggested.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 is also getting amazing BOGO deals at Verizon.

Earlier today, we saw a couple of iPhones getting some love before valentine’s day over at Verizon, as you can get two iPhone 12 devices for the price of one. You can also get a new iPhone 11 Pro with $640 savings or a new iPhone XR for free after meeting certain conditions. However, we are getting more deals on the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S21.

You can currently get two Samsung Galaxy S21 devices for the price of one. That is, of course, if you add a new line to your service on one of Verizon’s eligible Unlimited plans, and you must also purchase the devices with Verizon’s monthly payments. By doing this, you will receive up to $800 over 24 months, which would cover the price of one of your new devices.

Still, that’s not the only option for you to get a new Galaxy S21, as Verizon is also giving you up to $750 off when you trade in an eligible device, and you add a new line to your Unlimited plan, and your final option comes when you upgrade your device, and that will get you $600 off, but you will also have to trade in a device in good condition. If you’re curious as to how much you would have to pay for the different variants of the Galaxy S21, well, the vanilla version will cost you $33.33 a month for the next two years, while the Galaxy S21+ will set you back $33.33 for a total of 30 months. Finally, you can grab the Galaxy S21 Ultra for 39.99 or $49.99, depending on whether you want to pay for 30 or 24 months.

However, options don’t end there, as you can also head over to Samsung.com and check out the latest deals on the Samsung Galaxy S21 and other great devices. First, you can get the vanilla variant with 128GB storage starting at $75 when you choose to go for a phone locked to the carrier of your choice or get it unlocked for $100, after an eligible trade-in, that is.

The Galaxy S21 Plus is also on sale, and you can get one for $300, while the Galaxy S21 Ultra would cost you $500. The next best thing comes with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series, which is available for just $450 in its entry-level variant, while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra can be yours for $750. And Samsung’s best-selling device in the fourth quarter of 2020 is also available, and you can get your very own Samsung Galaxy S20 FE for just $425. Just remember that you must have an eligible device to trade-in if you wish to get these awesome discounts.
