Galaxy S21 series is $200 off at Amazon, or get a new iPhone SE for free right now

Apple’s latest 16-inch MacBook Pro, Microsoft Surface laptops and more are also on sale

The official news today begin with deals, starting with Samsung. The Galaxy S21 Series is currently 200 dollars off on Amazon.. Yes, the new phones that just launched. That means you can get the S21+ for just 799 or the S21 Ultra for 999 dollars. If you’re looking for more Samsung deals and have a device to trade-in, we still have those deals where you can find the S21 Ultra for as low as 400 dollars in the links in the description. Moving on to laptops, the 16 inch MacBook Pro is currently 350 dollars off on Amazon, meaning it starts at 2450 dollars.. But I’d recommend you stick around before you pull that trigger cause we’ve got hot news coming on what’s next. If you’re more of a windows guy, the Razer Blade Stealth 13 is currently 400 dollars off, meaning it starts at just 1300 dollars which is a pretty good deal. Best Buy also has the Surface Laptop 3 for 400 dollars off, leaving it at just 900 dollars. We have more deals on LG TVs, Amazon Fire TV products, other Samsung smartphones and more, in the links in the description.

Huawei Mate X2 goes official with a Galaxy Fold-like inward-folding design

Let’s move on to Huawei as, we’ve been expecting the Mate X2 for quite some time now and it’s finally out, and yes, it looks like a Galaxy Z Fold 2, but this is actually a different story. It features a new inward folding design with an 8 inch main OLED Display running at 90Hz refresh rate. On the cover, you’re getting a 6.45 inch display running at 90Hz as well. This phone is powered by the Kirin 9000 SoC along with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. When it comes to the camera, you get a 50MP main sensor, a 16MP Ultra Wide, a 12MP Telephoto with 3x Optical Zoom, along with an 8MP “Super Zoom” Camera that supports 10x optical zoom. Of course, you get your typical set of features like Pro Modes, Tracking Shots, High-Res and more. On this phone you’re also getting a 4500 mAh and 55W fast charging and yes, it is sadly exclusive for China and it doesn’t have Google Services. Thing is, the other reason why it’s different is because if you do the math, this phone costs a crazy $2775.. Yeah, high-end MacBook Pro territory, and I’m trying to figure out why.

AirPods 3 leaked images allegedly show off an in-ear design akin to the AirPods Pro

Let’s talk about Cupertino and their upcoming March Event as we get closer. Last week we covered how we could be getting new iPad Pros, AirTags, maybe an iPad mini and maybe some new AirPods. Over the weekend Jon Prosser made a video on the products his sources have told him we’re getting and that includes, iPad Pros, AirTags and a Magic Keyboard for that iPad Pro. However, he didn’t rule out the fact that we could get more things, he just wasn’t aware at the time. Well, going back to those AirPods, we have some new leaked schematics, showing off the new design. As the previous leaks claimed, these are taking design cues from the current AirPods Pro which is very welcomed if you ask me. They bring the black pressure sensitive touch input area, and the pressure relief vents at the top as well. They are also expected to support Spatial Audio but, Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode won’t be making the cut to separate them more from the Pros. Apparently the price tag will be $150 and this leak also claims that they will debut in March so we’ll see if we get them at the event.

MacBook Pro with SD card slot, HDMI port to launch in H2 of 2021

Sticking to Apple for another segment let’s talk MacBook Pro and I actually had to read this report twice because it sounds too good to be true. See MacBooks Pros have historically been criticized for repeatedly killing ports that Pros *actually* use, but just like we’ve seen with the iPhone, seriously it’s as if Apple finally listens. According to a new report from non-other than Ming Chi Kuo, Cupertino plans to release 2 new MacBook Pro models that, hear this, come equipped with an HDMI port and an SD Card reader.. A full throwback to the 2012 model, and I really hope I’m reading this right. Kuo mentions that we should expect these two new MacBook Pro models in the second half of 2021 that will have several significant design and specification changes. Of course, the SD Card reader was rumored last month but, this is the first time we’re hearing about this dedicated HDMI port. So, we’re expecting new 14 inch and 16 inch variants of the MacBook Pro, both powered by Apple Silicon. These are also tipped to feature brighter, higher-contrast panels, probably thanks to new mini-LED panels and MagSafe could be making a return to laptops as well which could apparently make them charge faster. We don’t know exactly how much they plan to scale back the USB-C ports but, I feel like 4 USB-C ports along with these new leaked ones are pretty reasonable, and especially at how high Apple prices these computers.

Story of the day:

Google Pixel 5a leak shows a familiar design with an upgraded dual rear camera setup

Yes.. It’s finally time. We’ve had a running joke with Diego about the fact that it’s been way too long since we’ve gotten any Pixel leaks.. And they’re finally here, though I’m not exactly sure how excited we should be. We have some new renders from OnLeaks that apparently belong to the Pixel 5a and in typical Pixel fashion, there’s nothing left to the imagination here. As yes, it brings pretty much the exact same design as the Pixel 4a.. Sort of. According to the leaks, this is a 6.2 inch OLED display at FHD+ resolution but, it is still unclear if Google will stick to 60Hz or make the jump to at least 90Hz refresh rate here. At the back, the little stove is making a return but this time we’re getting a dual camera module, finally. In typical Google fashion we should expect the same hardware we get on the Pixel 5 with a 12MP main sensor and a 16MP ultra wide. From the leaks you can see that we’re getting the same punch hole, same fingerprint scanner at the back and the headphone jack is still here! Apparently we should expect the Pixel 5a to come out some time in August this year, maybe with Android 12 as that’s when we should expect the first stable build. So yeah, it seems we’ll be getting a smaller Pixel 4a 5G in every which way you can think of, unless Google plans to fix things under the hood, and it’s not like if the company is famous for that.

Pocketnow Daily: Apple Event LEAKED! Here’s What You Should Expect! (video)

Apple’s latest iPad Air, HP Chromebooks and more on sale today

The Google Pixel 5, OtterBox cases and more devices are on sale today

As expected, let’s end the week with deals. Starting with the Google Pixel 5 and Amazon which is currently 150 dollars off. That leaves the entry level model for 789 with free shipping involved. If you really want a Pixel, the Pixel 4 is also available for 250 dollars off its original price tag, leaving it at 549 dollars. The Sony Xperia 1 Mark II which we know a lot of you like is 102 dollars off, leaving it at 1098 and yeah, that’s still pretty expensive. The OnePlus 8T is still 60 dollars off, leaving it at 689 dollars shipped which is a pretty ok deal. If you’re looking for an iPad, the new iPad Air which I’m currently rocking is 50 dollars off, leaving it at 699 dollars. Samsung’s trade-in deals are still available, leaving the Galaxy S21 Ultra for just 499 dollars and giving you 250 dollars in instant credit, but if you have an eligible device. We have more deals on Google Nest Speakers, Hisense TVs which are some of my favorites, plus Chromebooks and more.

ASUS ROG Phone 5 to launch on March 10

Moving on to the ASUS ROG Phone 5 and yes, they’ll be pulling a OnePlus and skipping the number 4. For the past couple of weeks we’ve been getting a ton of leaks and rumors, including Geekbench listings and teasers from the company. Now when you go to the ASUS ROG Phone 5 landing page, it has a countdown that ends in 18 days and 20 hours at the time when Diego was writing the script. So yes, we’ll be getting this phone on March 10 at 6:00AM ET. The ROG Phone 5 is tipped to bring a 6.78 inch display, powered by the Snapdragon 888 SoC, 8GB or 16GB of RAM, a 6000 mAh battery, running on Android 11. According to the leaks we should also be getting a dot matrix display on the rear panel, kind of like the panel you get on some ROG Gaming Laptops. We don’t have any price tags just yet, but we hope ASUS surprises us with some wow factors as, is it just me or it sounds kind of boring?

Malware targeting Apple’s new M1 Macs has already been spotted in the wild

Let’s talk about Apple Silicon Macs but, not for the reasons you would typically expect. We have a new report from a Mac security researcher cited by Wired, that explains in detail how malware is being adapted and recompiled to run natively on M1 Macs. He discovered the first one to be a Safari Extension called “GoSearch22” which was originally written to run on x86 Intel Macs. As they usually do, it presents itself as a regular Safari extension but, it collects your data and serves you a ton of banners and pop up ads, including ones that link you to malicious websites with malware. Now, the writer mentions that since malware is still at an early stage, antivirus scanners are not detecting the malware as easily and effectively as they do on Intel Macs as most of the tools haven’t been adapted or are simply not available just yet. Of course, all of this is bound to change as Apple expands their line-up.. Hopefully very soon.. And developers start patching these up and bringing antivirus software. We’ll make sure to link to the report in the description as, it’s still pretty interesting.

OnePlus 9 Pro might use an LTPO display to enable adaptive refresh rate

Let’s talk about the OnePlus 9 Series as, we’re getting pretty close to it. So far, the leaks for the OnePlus 9 have been kind of calm, I mean of course we had the design heavily leaked last week but for the other features, things have been kinda quiet. Now, we have a new tweet from Max Jambor that shines some light on what we could expect from the 9 Pro’s display. In his typical fashion, he didn’t share much on the tweet but it brings an image with the words, 9 Pro LTPO, on top of a display that looks like it’s scrolling at a high refresh rate. This also means that we should expect the 9 Pro to feature adaptive refresh rate like we get on the Galaxy S21 Series. For those of you who don’t know, this feature uses software to automatically change your refresh rate, depending on what you’re doing with the phone and giving you better battery life in the process. According to the guys over at PhoneArena, Jambor also confirmed that the regular OnePlus 9 won’t bring this feature, but it should still bring 120Hz. Now, according to surveys on OnePlus fans, they like their display permanently set at 120Hz so, this might be kind of a turn off for them but I mean, high refresh rate, better battery life.. Sounds good to me.

Story of the day:

Apple reportedly locks March 16 event to launch new iPads, and possibly, AirTags too!

And finally, for the hottest news today let’s talk Apple, as we’re just a few days away from March and we’re expecting to get a lot of products at this March Event. We have a new report from Korea’s Economic Daily News that claims that Cupertino will be having their Event Virtually on March 16th. Now, Apple has recently been doing this event a little later but, this date actually makes sense. See, according to the report the main focus here will be the new iPad Pros, and the original iPad Pro was announced on March 18 back in the day. Speaking of that iPad Pro, the report mentions that we shouldn’t expect a complete redesign, pretty much like what the leaks have pointed out but, this iPad could finally bring mini-LED displays and it will most likely be the first 5G iPad. And along with 5G we could also be getting additional built in magnets for new accessories. Apparently we could also be getting a new iPad mini which could be getting a larger display by shrinking down the bezels, at least to the older iPad Air’s level of course. The report also mentions that we could get a One More Thing moment to Tag along with.. AirTags. These trackers have been on the leaks since 2019 and according to trusted sources, they’re finally set to release. Other tipsters claim that we could also get new AirPods but, those rumors are kinda shaky.

Apple’s latest M1 MacBooks, iPad Pros and more devices are on sale

Apple’s latest M1 Mac mini, iPad Pros and more devices are on sale today

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Watch 3 are on sale today

And you know the way it goes, the official news today begin with deals. Starting with the new M1 MacBook Pro. Amazon currently has the entry level model for 100 dollars off, meaning it’ll cost you 1200 bucks but, you have to go for the Silver variant as, Space Gray is just 75 dollars off.. Actually watch my video on why Silver is my favorite. However if you go for 512GB of storage, both variants have the 100 dollar discount. If you’re looking for a desktop, the M1 Mac Mini is a cool 69 dollars off, meaning it starts at 600 but the discount is applied until checkout. Amazon also has the OnePlus 8T which is a pretty solid offer for 60 dollars off, leaving the entry level variant for 689 dollars shipped. If you’re looking for a new monitor, LG’s Ultra Fine Ergo Display which I love is 53 dollars off, leaving it at 645 dollars shipped and yes, its 4K. Finally, the 11 inch iPad Pro is also 50 off, leaving the Wi-Fi and Cellular and 256GB of storage model for 999 shipped. We have more deals on Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Series on trade-ins, other LG monitors, Alienware laptops and more in the links below.

Another Huawei Mate X2 teaser hints at an inward-folding design

Let’s move the spotlight on to Huawei as, we know that the P Series isn’t the only thing we’re waiting on. For the past couple of weeks the company has been heavily teasing the Mate X2 which is set to launch on February 22nd, in China of course. Now we have a new teaser image from the company that kind of shows a clock, with the phone being the hands, and you can definitely tell that this is an inwards folding display, meaning it’ll look like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 unlike what we got with the Mate X and the Mate XS. According to the leaks, the Mate X2 will feature a 6.45 inch outer display along with an 8.01 inch main display. When it comes to the cameras, we should expect a quad setup at the back with a 50MP primary, 16MP, 12MP and 8MP shooters to go along. Apparently there’s no selfie camera on the main display but there’s a dual one on the cover display. This phone will be powered by the Kirin 9000 and a 4400 mAh battery. We’ll see what the company announces as, I mean it looks interesting.. I just hope we could get it on this side of the pond.

LG could be helping Apple on its upcoming foldable iPhone

Let’s move on to Cupertino for a couple of segments, beginning with their foldable which has been getting a lot of traction lately. We’re expecting this phone to launch sometime during 2023 or later but, it looks like Apple is heavily invested in it already. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Apple is getting some help from LG to develop the foldable display. Now, this doesn’t mean that LG will be supplying the panels as, we know that Apple’s main OLED supplier is Samsung and according to previous rumors, they will be the ones supplying these flexible panels and they have already sent them multiple samples. The report claims that LG would be assisting Apple in these developments, without specifying on what their role would be exactly. If you haven’t been watching lately, we’re expecting this “iPhone Flip” to compete with the RAZR and Z Flip, by bringing a clamshell design. Some sources claim that we should expect a 7 inch panel with Apple Pencil support but, according to other sources like Prosser, we’ll be getting several bright color variants, to be marketed more towards a youthful audience. So yeah, we’re still very far but, rumors just keep coming.

Apple patent proposes the idea of an in-screen Face ID or Touch ID

Moving on, let’s talk Apple once again but this time we’re focusing on iPhones and FaceID which is currently useless until we get iOS 14.5. Now, we know that Apple has been working on finding ways to put FaceID under the display because we know that’s were the industry is going. Now, we have a new patent where Apple is looking at including Photodetectors Integrated into Thin-Film Transistor Backplanes”. I know that was a handful but, basically what they’re saying is that even as the display presents images, they can simultaneously include sensors that detect a different range of environments. These sensors would be variously configured as a biometric sensor, camera, or depth sensor probably being used to generate images, depth maps or even video clips according to the patent. And I think we all know where that’s going. However, most off the patent is concerned on how this photodetector can be included within the display, so it would have to be attached to an organic photosensitive material. Bottom line, the patent mentions that you would be looking at the display with the camera under the display looking right back at you without making the phone thicker and giving you full FaceID functionality. And, like we said yesterday this is just a patent so it could happen soon, it could happen in years or it might not happen at all. Hey, at least a smaller notch is a step in the right direction.

Story of the day:

Android 12 now out. Check out the full rollout schedule and compatibility details

And finally for the hottest news today, let’s talk Google and Android 12 as yes, it’s finally that time of the year again. Like in the case of last year, Google just launched the Developer Preview for Android 12 and of course, it’s currently limited to Pixels. Apparently for this preview, Google is focusing on “new tools for giving great experiences to users”. Some of the features include smoother transitions in the OS, a new design and layout for notifications. Alerts are getting tweaked to open faster, switching away from older notification methods. It’ll now be easer to paste images, videos, and other content from the clipboard or keyboard, finally. They’re also adding native AVIF and HEVC support, and we even hear of an immersive mode for video playback. Google is also tweaking audio, meaning new apps can have haptics correspond to audio playback, giving you better experiences for games, custom vibrations for contacts and more. Probably the biggest changes we’re expecting here go along the lines of privacy, now letting you know if your camera or microphone were being us, toggles to turn these off and more, kind of like to match Apple’s strategy, and improve it in certain ways. Of course, this is just generalized features and we should know more once the preview settles in.

Pocketnow Daily: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Crazy NEW Camera?! (video)

Apple’s latest M1 MacBooks, iPad Pros and more devices are on sale

Microsoft Surface laptops, SSD’s and Razer peripherals are on sale today

The OnePlus 8, 7T, Amazon Echo bundles and more devices are on sale

As per usual, let’s begin today with deals, and today we have some different ones. If you’re looking to replace your smartphone, OnePlus currently has some crazy deals on their website but you better move quick cause the entry level model of the OnePlus 8 already sold out. If you go for 12GB of RAM, that one is $100 off, leaving it at 699. The OnePlus 7T which is still a pretty good phone is 250 off, that leaves it at just 349 dollars. Moving on to Apple, Amazon has the latest iPad Air for 50 dollars off, which leaves the entry level model for 549 shipped but, you can also get a similar discount if you go for more storage and even the Cellular model. Sticking to Apple for a second, the Apple Watch Series 6 is available for a cool 20 dollars off, starting at 379 dollars shipped. For those of you who keep asking for more computers and parts, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is available for 200 dollars off, meaning it starts at 799 shipped. And guys, we have more deals in the links in the description for Samsung smartphones since the Galaxy S21 series still has trade-in deals, Samsung SSDs, LG displays, Pixels and more.

OnePlus patent filing reveals smartwatch with a round dial and two strap designs

Now obviously you know what deals on OnePlus phones mean. Let’s move on to see what’s next as yes we’re getting new phones, but that’s not all. Ever since Pete Lau confirmed that we’re getting a smartwatch from the company early in 2021, the leaks just haven’t stopped. Now, we have some new patents of the Watch spotted by TechNik News, showing off the schematics. We’re getting a round design with a ring on top but, it’s unclear if this will be a rotating bezel like we get on some Samsung Watches or a capacitive one. From the patent you can also see 2 different strap designs, one that kind of looks like the sport silicone bands for the Apple Watch, and the other one rocking a more traditional look which could probably be a leather strap. So, if you think about it, OnePlus might also go for the Elegant and Sport variants, to appeal to different demographics. So far, we have no real leaks for the software aside from the fact that it will be based on Wear OS and it’ll bring different sensors for features like measuring your heart rate and other vitals.

Apple’s new AirPods 3 could also arrive next month

Let’s talk about Apple’s March Event for a second as, rumors point that we should expect a ton of products from Cupertino. Now disclaimer, this tipster doesn’t have the best track record but, this tweet goes along with other rumors we’ve been covering from trusted sources. On the tweet he gives us a check list on what products have been rumored to make the cut where he checked the new iPad Pro, AirTags and new AirPods and, these pretty much go along with Prosser’s leaks from last week. However, he did cross out 2 products including new ARM Macs and Cheaper AirPods Max. Now as a recap, last week Jon Prosser confirmed that both AirTags and that new iPad Pro are both slated for March so, that sounds like it’s pretty much a done deal. As for the AirPods, we’ve been hearing tons of rumors but, we don’t know if this means that we’re getting the 3rd Generation AirPods or the 2nd Generation AirPods Pro. Let’s see what we end up getting as we’re just a few weeks away from March and I mean, the more products the merrier, but true, this economy doesn’t make that idea compelling.

Next iPhone/iPad Pro to have a variable refresh rate of up to 240Hz? Apple’s patent says so

Let’s move the spotlight back to Apple as we got some new and crazy leaks.. Well, sort off. Patently Apple discovered a new patent which describes an iPhone Display which could have high refresh mode enabled. That’s all great but, we’ve been covering that for weeks, but wait for it. What’s interesting here is that it mentions that this high refresh mode might be capable of updating content up to 4 times the native refresh rate. And if you do the math, this would mean that your iPhone could go all the way up to 240Hz. Yes, 240Hz. We know that touch sampling is not new to Apple, but it said refresh rate. Of course, most of the headlines yesterday claimed that this was coming to iPhone 12S but, we know the way Apple works so even if they got the patent we will most likely not get it this year, heck we might not even get it at all.. Or who knows, they might leap frog. So far, we’re expecting the iPhone 12S Series to introduce high refresh rate displays to iPhones with the Pro models, but we still expect them to be limited to 120Hz. But, we should also expect those Always-On Displays thanks to the new LTPO technology we’re getting.

Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 again rumored to arrive with an under-display camera

And finally, for the hottest news today, let’s talk Samsung and foldables as we have a very interesting development. If you remember, a couple of weeks ago we got some new renders from Ben Geskin, showing off the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s design and probably the 2 things that stood out the most where the S21 Ultra’s camera and an under the display selfie shooter. At the moment we thought it wouldn’t happen at all but, a new tweet from Ice Universe claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is still very likely to adopt UPC which is an Under-Panel-Camera. This technology was announced by Samsung back at CES and of course, they wouldn’t be the first to bring it to smartphones as ZTE already does it. This, however, does give them some serious bragging rights by having a foldable with an under the display camera, since you pretty much have a regular selfie shooter in the cover display when you need better quality, or vice versa, we’re not sure. Some other things we’re expecting from the Z Fold 3 include smaller 120Hz displays, an S Pen, your typical set of flagship specs with the Snapdragon 888 running on One UI 3.5 and we’re still expecting the price tag to be around the $2000 mark.

Nothing acquires Essential

Let’s move on to Carl Pei and Nothing as, which clearly does not stand for the amount of cash they hold, as there’s somewhat of a major surprise to discuss here. Just as a recap, back in December the company received $7M in funding and a couple of weeks ago, Carl Pei announced that his new company would be called “Nothing” and talked a little bit about their philosophy. Now, a new report from 9to5Google shows some resent filings at the UK Intellectual Property Office that reveal that Andy Rubin has sold his Essential Brand to Carl Pei’s Nothing Technologies Limited. The application was actually made back in November, with the process being completed on January 6th. Therefore, the trademarks, logo and the Essential Brand is now part of Nothing. We Essentially have Nothing here.. Get it? So far we still have no concrete information on what Nothing is planning on releasing with rumors hinting to wireless earbuds and even smart home technology but, the recent announcements claimed that we should expect it soon. If you think about it, they now have access to Ambient OS, and numerous patents Essential was working on so, let’s see what and when we get it.

HUAWEI P50 series rumored to launch next month with three models in tow

Let’s talk about Huawei for a second as, we’re currently due for a refresh of the company’s P Series. And of course, we know that they’re going through a lot of uncertainty at the moment as, even their SoC production is limited due to the restrictions. However, we have a new leak from a tipster on Twitter that claims that, the Huawei P50 Series is ready for mass production, as the final design is locked. The tweet claims that we’ll be getting 3 models like we did last year with the P50, P50 Pro and P50 Pro+, all with a new design. Finally he claims that the Selling Points here will be the screen quality, some new ultra sensing camera system and the gaming capabilities. Now, according to another tipster, the P50 Series will go official somewhere around March 26th to March 28th. Last year we got this phone in April, but without Google Play services, who knows how this launch will go once again.

Apple may be planning to give stylus support to its first foldable iPhone

Finally, for the hottest news today let’s talk Apple and their upcoming launches. And I know, it’s kind of early for the hottest news but it’s because we’ll be splitting it into 2 segments. Let’s start with the foldable iPhone as, we’ve been hearing a ton of feasible rumors lately. According to some research from a firm called Equal Ocean, the foldable iPhone will arrive with Apple Pencil support, though even if it says current models, we’re not sure if it’s Pencil 1 or 2. They also predict that it will arrive with the clamshell design like Prosser mentioned last week and it will feature a foldable OLED display between 7.3 and 7.6 inches. If you remember what we covered last week, Prosser claims that this foldable iPhone will come with several colorful and fun colorways, to market it to a younger audience. And guys we know, rumors for foldable iPhones have been going on for years now but, it looks like we’re finally getting somewhere with dates pointing on to 2023 or a little bit later. Let’s see where Samsung is by then with the Z Flip as well as by then it’ll be a pretty mature lineup.

Story of the day:

iPhone 13 could finally get an always on display and other great features

Finally, again, for the second hottest news today, let’s talk iPhone 12s.. Yes, make peace with the name, but it doesn’t sound like if this lineup will be bad at all. So far we’ve been hearing very consistent rumors that this will be an S year with the same camera design but with improved internals, a shorter notch, all paired with better internals. Now, we have a new report from Everything Apple Pro where he gives us more information on what to expect. First off he claims that the matte back of the phone will be getting refined, meaning the Pro models, saying they’ll have a slightly more grippy texturized back. This should make them more comfortable, kind of like the soft matte you get on the Pixel Series. Moving on to the front, he claims that we will finally be getting an always-on display thanks to the implementation of an LTPO panel, which also allows for variable 120hz. The Always-On Display will apparently have minimal customizability, kind of like a toned down lock screen. We even hear of an optical fingerprint scanner on the display instead of ultrasonic to keep the cost down, with the power button option maybe making it to a refresh of the SE. Finally, the video also mentions that we’ll be getting an improved camera with a better ultra wide lens, features like Portrait Video and more.

TikTok sale to Walmart and Oracle shelved

Let’s move the spotlight on to TikTok which, had a very interesting end to their 2020. If you remember, back in September, the company reached a deal with Oracle and Walmart, to avoid the US ban that was being imposed on them. The deal was approved by the administration but, when the sale deadline came on December 4th, the government gave them no response so the deal was left off in kind of a limbo. Now, it looks like the new President of the US has different plans. According to the Wall Street Journal, TikTok’s deal with Oracle and Walmart has been put on hold “indefinitely”. Apparently the new President is reviewing the past efforts which were based on handling security risks from Chinese tech companies. Now, the officials haven’t ruled out anything just yet but it looks like the sale might not happen at all. However, the new administration might have to make a decision pretty soon as, they are supposed to deliver a formal response before February 18th as part of TikTok’s lawsuit. We’ll see how this evolves next week as, we know that they might end up selling or, simply making changes to the app and the algorithm it uses to recommend you videos as, that wouldn’t be sold.

First signs of a Samsung Galaxy S21 FE aka Fan Edition have emerged

Moving on back to Samsung, a couple of weeks ago we covered how the company might already be working on the S21 FE but, that was kind of a reach and most likely just an LTE variant of the S21. However, we have a new report from SamMobile, showing off the model number of a new Samsung device which reportedly belongs to the S21 Fan Edition. Now, the report mentions that Samsung hasn’t launched LTE variants of their flagships just yet, so they’re assuming that they’re only trying to streamline things by bringing this model number of the Galaxy S21 FE in line with the rest of the Galaxy S21 models, basically to throw us off. Now, it is pretty early in the year when compared to when we got the S20 FE, but we are expecting the specs on this phone to include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 870, a similar camera to the Galaxy S21 Trio, 5G and of course, a high refresh rate AMOLED display. The report also mentions that Samsung might go the same route by bringing a wide array of bright color options, to market it in the same way they did last fall. So yeah, let’s hope we get this phone somewhat soon as the S20 FE was a great pick last year.

This is what we could expect from Apple’s new mixed reality headset

Let’s move on to Cupertino for the rest of the show, beginning with their upcoming Mixed Reality headset as, we’ve had a ton of leaks in the past 2 weeks. Now, we have some new patents for this headset which were made public yesterday. This headset is listed as a “Head-Mounted Display Unit with Adaptable Facial Interface” and it explains how the design elements can prevent the headset from moving around when the person moves while providing a comfortable fit. Now, there’s a ton of technical jargon here so, apparently it’ll feature at least one eye tracking camera, an illumination source that emits infrared light to the user’s eyes, and a diffraction grating located in the eye pieces. Other details mention over a dozen cameras, to help achieve the eye tracking, as well as the 8K displays, making everything look as good as possible. Another image on the patents show that this might work in a Tony Stark kind of way where, it will display a 3D text generation and editing GUI in a virtual spaces, which includes a virtual screen for you to enter or edit text in documents via a keypad from the input device. Apparently the text document or area can be placed and moved to various depths in your 3D virtual space. Very Michael Fisher Iron Man if you ask me. We should expect this headset as soon as next year and priced at $3000 to compete with Microsoft’s solution… which sounds all enterprise.

Story of the day:

Apple’s next-gen iPad Pro and AirTags object tracker rumored to arrive next month

Finally, for the hottest news today, let’s talk Apple leaks as, we’re due some products. Earlier today Jon Prosser went on an answering and tweeting spree where he gave us some new information on when we should expect some things. First off, let’s get iPhone 13 out of the way as, someone asked him if Touch ID was still coming to iPhones this year, and Prosser simply replied “Yup”. Now, moving on to other products and their launch dates, he tweeted out that AirTags, which have been ready for months now, are still slated to launch in March. Of course this isn’t set in stone but, he claims that his sources haven’t mentioned any further delays this time. Meaning it should finally be a done deal. Now, speaking of March, someone also asked him about a new iPad Pro with Prosser replying that we should also expect it in March as far as he knows. Now, to expand on these products, we’re expecting the AirTags to be Tile-like tackers that will help you keep track of your belongings. And yes, you’ll most likely have to attach them to a third party accessory to carry it around. When it comes to the iPad, we’re expecting a similar design to the current iPad Pro with the dual camera at the back, the boxy design, Face ID and we really hope this is the debut of mini-LED displays. Finally, for iPhone 13, we’re expecting a shorter notch, Touch ID and upgraded cameras for all 4 models this year.

Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X65 5G modem brings a promise of 10Gbps internet speeds

Let’s move on to Qualcomm as, the company just announced the new Snapdragon X65 5G Modem which brings some crazy promises. This is the 4th generation for the company’s flagship modems if you think of it. The biggest promise here is that it brings 10 Gigabit 5G to the table thanks to a new Fixed Wireless Access Platform, becoming the first modem-RF system in the world to reach these numbers. This modem features an upgradeable architecture which will adapt via software updates, making it kind of future proof. Qualcomm also brings a new 4th-Gen mmWave antenna that claims to boost mmWave coverage as well as power efficiency, while supporting higher transmit power. It also relies on an AI Antenna Tuning technology to improve cellular performance and efficiency, letting you achieve faster speeds with better battery life. And guys, there’s actually a ton of more technical details and a full article at Pocketnow.com, I won’t bore you with the specifics but yeah, it all sounds *PRETTY* amazing.

Apple’s upcoming Mixed Reality headset gets concept rendered. Hey, Ready Player One!

Apple partners with TSMC to develop micro OLED display for its AR devices: Report

Now it’s time for Apple’s Mixed and Augmented Reality devices which have been making a lot of headlines. First off, we have some new concept renders which were created based on that sketch we got of them last week, which *I Agree*, look like a pair of AirPods Max laid down. In the visor you can tell from the outside that there’s multiple sensors and cameras that kind of look like Face ID but, these will reportedly keep track of you’re surroundings while you’re using the headset. From the inside you see the 2 displays which will reportedly be 8K panels, as well as a cushion and a slot for you’re nose. *I agree*, all seriously looks like if it came out of Ready Player One. Now, speaking of those 8K displays on the inside, we have a new report from Nikkei Asia that claims that Apple has tasked TSMC with developing micro-OLED displays that will be used in Augmented Reality Devices. These displays won’t be built into glass like you get with smartphones. Apparently, they will be built directly into wafers, and I also thought about cookies first, but this allows for the displays to be far thinner, smaller and more power efficient. Apparently the production of these displays is currently in trial phase, and mass production will actually take a few years to begin. We’ll see what we get and how much exactly is “a few years”.

More Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip2 details surface online

Moving the spotlight on to foldables, let’s talk Samsung which should have a pretty busy year. Recent leaks claim that we could have the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 as soon as July so naturally, leaks are starting to come in. Now we have a new report from Sam Mobile that gives us more details on what to expect. On the report, they shared the model number for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 along with the fact that it will be available with at least 256GB of storage, running Android 11 out of the box with a new One UI 3.5 on top. When it comes to the Z Flip 3, they shared the model number as well and it’ll apparently bring 128GB and 256GB storage options and running the same software combo. Back to the Z Fold, recently we got some renders that claimed that we should expect the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera module as well as an under the display selfie shooter but, we should take that with a grain of salt. What we are expecting is slightly smaller displays, in order to fit an S Pen inside the chassis. As for the Z Flip 3, we’re expecting it to bring a 120Hz display with slimmer bezels, and a design that resembles the regular S21 models. We don’t have much other information on the Z Flip or the rumored Z Flip Lite but, we’ll see what we end up getting.

Story of the day:

Leak suggests Google is drawing inspiration for Android 12 from iOS 14’s privacy tools

And finally, for the hottest news today, let’s talk Android 12 as we’re getting closer to the announcement at least. A couple of recent reports claimed that Google wants to take a play out of Apple’s privacy book and well, we have some kind of confirmation now. We have some new screenshots of Android 12 recovered by XDA that show a few familiar changes if you’re rocking iOS 14. On the top right corner, you now get a green dot if the camera is being used, or an orange dot if the microphone was used recently. Google is also adding toggles for universally disabling the camera and microphone on the interface which is actually more than what Apple offers. Another change that resembles iOS 14 comes with the new widgets interface, *who would’ve thought*. But seriously, these now offer a cleaner look which allows for things to look better organized, instead of rounded corners on some and sharp ones on others. Going back a little to privacy, last week we covered how Google also wants to implement App Tracking Transparency but in less of a strict way than what Cupertino will bring with iOS 14.5. Keep in mind, these screenshots have not been confirmed and we’re still months away but, I mean privacy changes are always welcomed, especially from Google.

    Sony Xperia 1 II

HUAWEI Mate X2 with an inward-folding design will debut on February 22

Let’s move on to foldables which, like we mentioned yesterday should be having a big 2021. This time, let’s talk Huawei as so far, the company has given us 2 foldables with the Mate X and the Mate XS which was just a refresh. Now, recently the company filed some patents that hint that we might be getting a new design and, it’s kind of a familiar one, looking a lot like the Z Fold 2. According to the leaks, this phone will bring an 8.01in main display, with a 6.45in cover display which will bring a pill-shaped punch hole, no selfie camera on the main display. On the camera department, Huawei will reportedly give us a quad camera setup with a 50MP main lens, along with 16MP, 12MP and 8MP sensors, but we’re not so sure on the specifics of those just yet. It’ll also be powered by the Kirin 9000 SoC, along with a rather small 4400 mAh battery along with 66W charging. And yes, for the price tag, we’re still hearing around $2000 but, due to the whole ban we might not get it world wide once again. Now, the reason we’re covering this is, the company just sent out press invitations for an event to happen on February 22, showing off the folding display in the teaser. We’ll see what we get.

Apple working on Mixed Reality headset with over a dozen cameras and 8K displays: Report

Let’s talk Apple and a little more of their unconventional projects, cause right now, it seems the sky is the limit for them. Starting with the Apple Car which was a big topic yesterday, a new report from CNBC claims that this will be a fully autonomous vehicle and it will not be designed to have a driver. This means that Apple is planning to go head to head with Tesla as, we know that that is one of Tesla’s ultimate goals. Now, moving on from the Apple Car, let’s talk about Mixed Reality headsets.. Yes. For some time now, there’s been a ton of rumors surrounding VR and AR headsets from Cupertino as well as glasses. Well, according to a new report from The Information, Apple is working on a Mixed Reality headset that will come equipped with over 12 cameras for head and hand movement tracking, as well as capturing your real world surroundings. Apparently they will also equip it with 2 8K displays and it will feature some eye-tracking technology. Just for contest, Microsoft’s $3500 HoloLens 2 features a total of 7 cameras and a 2K display, so yeah. Now, you might be wondering about the crazy Apple price tag but, the report mentions that the current discussed price is $3000, way cheaper than Microsoft’s considering everything you’re supposed to be getting. The report also shared a rough sketch of the product with a mesh headband and a rather small visor at the front. It will reportedly be aimed at enterprise customers but, we don’t have any dates yet.

Google is exploring a less stringent take on Apple’s anti-tracking tools for Android

Last week we covered how Facebook could be suing Apple thanks to the new privacy changes Cupertino announced with iOS 14. If you’re unaware of these, iOS 14.5 which is currently on beta testing, will require developers to ask for the users consent to track their activity across other apps, websites and even devices. You’ll get a prompt with the options, Ask App not to Track or Allow. Facebook’s whole case is that this will affect small business as they can’t track your data to serve you their ads. Yeah right. Well, according to Bloomberg’s Marc Gurman and Nico Grant, Google is also looking into this matter with Android but, there’s a catch. According to the report, Google might implement this feature but in a “less stringent way”. The report mentions that Google is trying to balance the rising demands of privacy-conscious consumers with the financial needs of developers and advertisers. They are apparently seeking input from stakeholders, similar to how they’re developing the new Privacy Sandbox feature for Chrome. So, apparently, Google’s approach won’t directly ask you to opt in or opt out of being tracked because, advertisers won’t really like that but they will probably opt for a solution that allows a certain degree of ad-targeting, but still in a narrower scope for the kind of data they’re collecting. You know what’s funny? That Apple’s Face ID solution for iOS 14.5 will make the update so enticing for EVERYONE, that I doubt anyone will want to skip the update.. So sorry Facebook.

    Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 foldable phones might arrive in July

Finally, for the hottest news today let’s talk Samsung and foldables. Late last year we heard a ton of rumors on how, the Galaxy Note line was dying so Samsung could shift their focus on to their foldable products. Samsung debunked that but, there are some rumors about it still happening. Another thing Samsung mentioned is how their launch schedule might be changing, which we saw with the S21’s release. Now we have a new tweet from Ice Universe that kind of confirms it. On the tweet he mentions that we may have to wait 5 months to see the Z Flip 3 and the Z Fold 3. If you think about, their releases are always pretty much 6 months apart and January and August makes all the sense in the world. So far, we’re expecting the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to bring a new UTG composition for the 7.55in internal display, and then on the outside we’ll reportedly be getting a 6.21in cover. A couple of days ago we covered some renders from Ben Geskin showing off the possible new design with the S21 Ultra’s camera and some under the display selfie shooters and even though they aren’t too far fetched, we don’t know if any of those 2 features are coming. Other rumors hint that it’ll be priced at $2000 like the Z Fold 2 was, and it will bring an S Pen included which is why the displays are shrinking down. So far we don’t have much information on the Z Flip 3 expect for the fact that it’ll bring a 6.7in main display at 120Hz and a larger cover display. We’re also hearing some rumors of a Z Flip Lite but that isn’t certain as well. If this is the case though, we should be getting more leaks and rumors soon. Would you buy an Apple Watch just to improve Face ID?

The Galaxy S21 5G is still starting at $99, but now with just $50 in instant credit. The S21+ now starts at $299 with $75 in instant credit as well. And finally, the S21 Ultra is available for $499 with $100 in instant credit if you buy it. Just keep in mind all of these prices are for trade-in deals so you need a device to trade in to take advantage of these. If you are planning to buy a new Galaxy and want some protection, SUPCASE is still our #1 choice. Use promo code 10POCKETNOW on Amazon to get 10% off, or use promo code POCKETNOW15 on SUPCASE.com to get your cases. Looking for an older device? Don’t worry the Z Flip is still available for $299 and the Z Fold 2 for just $1000 if you have a device to trade in. Moving on, the Microsoft Surface Go 2 is available for $35 off, meaning it starts at $515 and we also have deals on the Type Cover. The OnePlus 8 Pro is still available for $200 off, leaving it at $700 from OnePlus, though yeah, kind of meh with thos S21 deals. The Google Pixel 4a 5G is still $50 off leaving it at $450. And finally, the Pixel 4 XL is available for $109 off its original price tag, leaving it at $609. We have more deals on Motorola phones, Razer accessories and more in the links below.

onor could unveil a foldable phone this year

Now let’s talk about the future of Honor. The company has actually been quite active this year after Huawei sold the brand. Today we have a new statement from the company’s CEO where he does mention that Huawei’s sanctions no longer affect them, with other reports claiming that they have allegedly made new deals with Qualcomm, MediaTek and even Google. Earlier this week we heard how they might be preparing 2 different line ups with Google Play Services but apparently, that’s not all. The company’s CEO mentions that they will soon launch a “flagship series” like the Mate and the P line ups from Huawei and even a foldable phone under the Magic branding;. Actually, a leak from Weibo claims that we should expect the first series of folding screen phones later this year. Speaking of foldables, it looks like this year they’ll probably become more mainstream, with Xiaomi reportedly working on 3, OPPO working on 1 and Samsung working on 3 as well, including a Z Flip Lite. We’ll see what we get from Honor though as, it should be good, but outer folding has proven to not be a good idea.

We could see batteries used as haptic engines in a future Apple Watch

Let’s move on to Cupertino and the Apple Watch as, it looks like the company is looking to shake things up.. You’ll get that in a second. The company just filed a new patent to the USPTO where they would make the Apple Watch thinner, by removing the haptic feedback engine. However, since the haptic feedback is so essential to the Apple Watch’s User experience, Apple plans to use the battery to take over that roll. The patent describes a “moving battery component” which will provide the haptic feedback. Now, by removing the haptic engine this might also allow for a larger battery, improving battery life in the process, unless Apple has other plans. But yeah, this is just a patent and we know that Apple is notorious for patenting stuff and never releasing it so, we’ll see what we actually end up getting with the next Apple Watch as, so far the only other rumor we’ve heard is the blood glucose monitor. Does anyone remember the days when if you wanted your Nokia phone to vibrate you needed to buy a special battery that did so? No one? I know.. I’m that old.

Samsung might soon debut its own rollable phone too

Moving back a little bit to Samsung, let’s actually talk foldables, since in the Honor segment we discussed that the company is working on 3. It seems we should expect big upgrades with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, a Z Flip 3 (3 is for the names to match) and the rumors have it that we’ll be getting a Galaxy Z Flip Lite, making foldables more affordable. But, it looks like foldables isn’t the only market Samsung plans to roll into. I know, Diego is full of puns today. Well, Samsung Display’s VP just said during an earnings call that they plan to “fortify their presence in the display market through innovative form factors such as rollable and sliding displays”. Now, he didn’t specify that these are for smartphones as, we know that Samsung Display does much more. However, we have a patent that was filed by Samsung back in 2019 that shows a smartphone screen that slides down and back into the device. Once it slides down it reveals the selfie camera and other sensors, probably for facial recognition. Of course, there’s no guarantee that we’ll be getting one of these any time soon but, with LG possibly leaving this market, would you like to see a rolling or sliding phone from Samsung?

    Story of the day:

Apple is testing optical in-screen fingerprint sensor for its upcoming iPhones

iPhone 13 Pro could have a 1TB storage variant

Finally, for the hottest news today let’s talk iPhone 13, or 12S. Yes, I know Apple hasn’t done an S in 2 years, but I’m sure you understand what I mean about iterative updates. We’ve heard multiple reports that overlap so far, like the smaller notch or the on-display fingerprint scanner, as well as the 120Hz refresh rate. Now, we have a new report from IT-Home claiming that the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max could get up to 1TB of storage. Just for reference the current Pro models can go up to 512GB and Apple hasn’t added more storage in 2 generations. Yesterday, Jon Prosser also mentioned that there are some prototypes at the moment with the added storage but, it will only happen for the Pro models. He also called it 12S in the video so, interesting huh. Finally, we also got some new renders of the phone by LetsGoDigital and Concept Creator who always does a great job. These renders are for the iPhone 13 Pro and they show a very familiar design, with the boxy build and pretty much the same camera module as, we’re only expecting internal changes for the camera. Probably the biggest change from last year is the shorter notch, which won’t be narrower according to multiple reports. These renders also show yet another courageous move from Apple, with no charging port at the bottom, and we wouldn’t be surprised considering how much they’re currently pushing MagSafe. Both of these reports also mention Wi-Fi 6E integration, which we talked about a couple of days ago.

iOS 14.4 arrives with a fix for security bugs that may have been actively exploited

Now let’s continue with official news, but let’s switch gears into Apple, as I don’t know about you but my Apple Watch was acting funky in calorie counting, so I was waiting for an update. Yesterday, the company released iOS 14.4, iPadOS 14.4 and watchOS 7.3, which I highly recommend you download. See, iOS 14.4 includes improvements like, smaller QR codes being recognized by the camera, the option to classify your Bluetooth devices in Settings for the phone to correctly identify headphones or another devices. Apple is also now warning you, that with iOS 14.4 your iPhone can recognize if the camera on it had a third party repair for the iPhone 12 Series, which is handy if you buy second hand I guess. iOS 14.4 also brings a ton of bug fixes, like the artifacts that appear in HDR photos in the 12 Pro, some widgets that wouldn’t show your activity data, and delayed typing in the keyboard. Probably one of the biggest changes is with the HomePod mini as Apple is now introducing the functionality of the U1 Ultra Wideband chip for the iPhone 11 and 12 Series. This improves the handoff feature, as well as visual, audible and haptic effects while doing so. watchOS 7.3 that brings some new Unity faces, ECG support for more countries, enhancements to Fitness+, but what I really cared about was the bug fixes. So yeah, make sure to download it if you’re having issues with some bugs, not so much if you have a third party camera. And we also have a full list of the updates in the links below.

Carl Pei is now the CEO and co-founder of Nothing

Now let’s move on to Nothing, and no this is not one of Diego’s bad jokes. I guess Carl Pei decided that the best way to name his new company is to call it Nothing. A few months ago he made headlines after leaving OnePlus to start his own venture and now, he’s announcing his new company, “Nothing”. This comes shortly after the $7M he got in financing was announced back in December with funding from his friends like Kevin Lin and even Casey Neistat. Carl issued out a statement saying, “it’s been a while since anything interesting has happened in tech. It’s time for a breeze of fresh change”. He claims that Nothing’s mission is to “remove barriers between people and technology to create a seamless digital future. He believes that the best technology is beautiful and intuitive to use, and once it is sufficiently advanced, it should fade into the background, and feel like “nothing”. The company will be releasing their first products in the first half of this year but, we have no information on what kind of products or how many we should expect. We don’t even know what field they’re going into but, we really do hope this is not another “Essential” case as, we all know how that went down. Let us know if you like the name Nothing, cause I understand the idea, but I debate the negative nature of the name, though hey, he’s someone I admire as a marketing genius so I’m excited.

More OnePlus 9 images surface online

And yes, we’re getting closer to the OnePlus 9 Series as 2021 is kind of the year of earlier releases like we saw with the S21. A couple of weeks ago we got some high definition renders of the phone from Ben Geskin and now we get to see the real deal. This is apparently the OnePlus 9 Pro and these pictures were taken somewhere in the Chinese subway. From the back we get to see the new camera module which brings 2 large sensors for the 48MP primary, the wide angle and of course, a smaller lens for the macro. This looks like a silver color variant with the OnePlus Logo in the center as you could expect. From the front, remember this is the Pro so it is rocking a curved display with very small bezels and that punch hole looks so small it kind of looks photoshopped. On the display you also get to see the specs, like the Snapdragon 888, 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. We’re also expecting this phone to bring a 32MP selfie shooter, a 4500 mAh battery with 40W wireless charging. We’re expecting this phone along with the OnePlus 9 and the 9 Lite some time in March, along with maybe the OnePlus Watch which was recently certified.

    Story of the day:

AirPods Pro 2 rumor again points to 1H 2021 launch

iPhone 13 series could support faster Wi-Fi 6E

Spigen’s AirTags case listed online, hints at imminent debut of Apple’s object tracker

And finally, for the hottest news today, let’s move back on to Apple but for 3 different reports of things we should expect this year, so bear with me. Let’s start with the next generation AirPods Pro which should be launched very soon. According to a new report from DigiTimes, a company called Winbond is expected to be one of the suppliers for the next generation AirPods Pro which are “slated for a launch later in the first half of the year”. And actually, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this as a previous report claimed that we should get these in April with the iPhone SE+… I know, you heard that right, SE+. Moving on to another unreleased wearable, let’s talk AirTags. We have some new, high resolution images of another leather keychain carrier for the AirTags from a company called Cyrill which is actually a sub-brand for Spigen. The keychain is listed at $20 along with its features like being wireless charging compatible. The thing about is, this keychain is listed for “Late October” but these have been delayed so much, this could probably be late October for 2020 so, we’ll see. Finally, let’s talk iPhone 13 as, a new report from a Barclays Analyst claims that the iPhone 13 Series will bring Wi-Fi 6E amplifiers with suppliers like Broadcom benefiting from Apple and Samsung adopting the technology. Wi-Fi 6E is the new technology which offers higher performance, lower latency and faster data rates at up to 6GHz.. You know, stuff the Galaxy S21 Ultra has. We’ll see what else we get as, is it just me or are the iPhone leaks getting kinda slow?

Apple’s latest M1 Mac mini, Surface laptops and more are on sale today

As expected, let’s begin the week with some deals as those don’t seem to bet slowing down at all. The Galaxy S21, S21+, the Ultra and every product we got at Unpacked is still available for pre-orders with huge savings but, you only have 3 days left to pre-order it. So, if you get the Galaxy S21, it is available for just $99 and the S21+ for $299, if you have an eligible device for trade-in and you also get $100 or $150 respectively in instant credit for accessories and 6 months of Spotify. When it comes to the S21 Ultra, that one is available for just $499, with up to $200 in instant credit, a smart tag, and 4 months of YouTube Premium. Yes, I know, they’re still going. Where you can use code POCKETNOW15 to get a 15% discount. If you want an older device that’s too good for the deals, the S20 FE is available for $425, while the Z Fold 2 is still available for $1000 if you have a device for trade-in. The Surface Book 3 is $203 off at Amazon, leaving the Intel Core i5, and 8GB of RAM model for $1396. We have more deals on LG Monitors, other Samsung products and more.

HUAWEI considers sellings its P and Mate flagship phone brands: Report

Moving on to Huawei, the company has been doing some interesting moves in order for their US ban to continue affecting the successful mobile business they had. Recently the company sold their HONOR brand which, actually means that Honor can now launch phones with Google Mobile Services. Now, there’s a weird conflicting report from Reuters claiming that Huawei has been in talks to sell their P and Mate Series to a consortium of buyers. Apparently this is another government-backed consortium of investments firms from Shanghai and the talks have been going on for weeks, as Huawei is claimed to have started to internally explore the possibility of selling their brands as early as September. Now the conflicting twist is that Huawei themselves have refuted the report. They put out a statement saying that they have “learned of some rumors regarding the possible sale of their flagship brands, and they said that there is no merit to these rumors whatsoever. Huawei has no such plan”. The reason why we’re still covering this is because, something similar happened to Honor as it was tipped that the company was selling it, Huawei said it wasn’t, and we know how the story ended. So yeah, at the moment, the Mate and P Series are still huge in China but what the future holds is yet to be seen.

Samsung and Apple’s upcoming smartwatches might allow blood glucose monitoring

Let’s talk about Smart Watches for both Apple and Samsung as, it looks like both companies are looking to push new health-centric features in 2021. So far we’ve seen ECG, blood pressure measurements, blood oxygenation and more. Not all are entirely accurate, but they’re there. Now, it looks like the next big upgrade will be blood sugar or glucose measurement. According to an ETNews report, the Galaxy Watch Active 3 will employ a non-invasive technology to take your glucose level measurements, while using an optical sensor. When it comes to Cupertino, they will reportedly be using the same technology to offer this feature, and they have apparently filed the patents and they are doing testing for the accuracy and efficiency for the blood sugar monitor. This technology was showed off at CES by a Japanese company, and bringing it to the mainstream is good for everybody at the end of the day.

Sony will revive the Xperia Compact phone in 2021, and here’s how it looks

Now let’s talk compact smartphones. The iPhone 12 mini was an interesting experiment, but we’ve been hearing that they slowed down production to boost the Pros which have been doing far better. Now if you remember, Apple didn’t pioneer this market. It was Sony, and it seems the compact is making a comeback. We have some new renders from OnLeaks of an Xperia Compact. According to these renders, this phone brings a 5.5in display with a waterdrop notch and somewhat of a thick chin at the bottom. When it comes to the cameras, it’ll reportedly bring a dual module at the back with one of them being a 13MP sensor. Also, it’ll bring a dedicated camera shutter button, a headphone jack and the fingerprint sensor comes embedded in the power button. OnLeaks mentions that the phone will be a tad bigger than the iPhone 12 mini, even if the displays will be of almost the same size and it also looks like this is more of a mid-ranger when compared to the 12 mini. Imagine that, dedicated camera button and headphone jack on a mini phone.. Seriously how hard can that be?

Apple’s new AirTags could be getting closer to launch

Let’s keep talking about Apple and unreleased wearables, but this time with the ones we’re still waiting for, AirTags. We’ve been waiting for these Tile-like trackers for the longest time, with sources like Jon Prosser claiming that they are ready to go, but Apple has delayed them multiple times due to the pandemic. A couple of weeks ago, Evan Blass posted some pictures of the accessories that will be used to carry around the AirTags, like these Nomad leather keychains as well as a Glasses Holder, for you to be able to track your glasses. Now we have a new image from a tipster on Twitter, showing an AirTag holder allegedly made by Spigen which will be sold on Amazon. This is another keychain with a black design, and you can see the AirTag sticking out in the center. So again, AirTags are Apple’s upcoming trackers which will work like the Galaxy Smart Tags, and according to multiple sources like Ming Chi Kuo, they are set to launch but, we don’t really have a timeline as for when so we’ll just have to wait. It’s just interesting that what matters is not the bare airtag, but instead the accessories that would use them to become smarter.

    Story of the day:

Samsung’s Exynos SoC with AMD GPU conquers Apple’s A14 Bionic in leaked benchmarks

And finally for the hottest news today let’s move on to Samsung and your favorite topic, their Exynos processors. I know, bad joke.. But bare with me, it seems this is about to change. A couple of weeks ago now we got the Galaxy S21 Series which comes with the Exynos 2100 in some regions. And in case you haven’t heard, Samsung abandoned their custom CPU cores to use ARM’s design, meaning that the Exynos 2100 can compete with the Snapdragon 888 when it comes to CPU prowess. Not necessarily the same story on graphics though, but that’s about to change. Samsung is partnering with AMD to power the next generation of Exynos chips and these may come sooner than expected to the market. A Korean publication allegedly has some benchmarks of Samsung’s unnamed new chips which should debut in 2022. Now, we should take these with a big grain of salt as, they didn’t provide any screenshots but, according to these numbers, the A14 Bionic should be scared. In the Manhattan benchmark it beat it by 60 frames at 181.8 fps, in the normal Aztec ruins it beat it by almost 60 frames again, and in high Aztec Ruins it still beat it by 28 fps. And we know, this is Apple’s processor for last year and we should expect some upgrades from the A15 but guys, this is Exynos we’re talking here. This could solve everyone’s problems with Exynos if AMD and Samsung execute it correctly.

Gaming monitors, Marshall Bluetooth speakers, and more accessories are on sale

iPhone 11 Pro, OnePlus 8T, Galaxy S21 and more phones on sale today

Looking for gaming peripherals? There’s a ton of Razer deals available right now

And yes, let’s end the week, as we end ever week, with Deals, and it actually begins with the ones you should not let go by. The Galaxy S21, S21+, the Ultra and every product we got at Unpacked is still available for pre-orders with huge savings. For example, if you get the Galaxy S21 it is available for just $99 and the S21+ for $299, if you have an eligible device for trade-in and you also get $100 or $150 respectively in instant credit for accessories and 6 months of Spotify. In the case of the S21 Ultra, that one is available for just $499, with up to $200 in instant credit, a smart tag, and 4 months of YouTube Premium. I know, it’s crazy. If you’re looking to protect your new Galaxy, SUPCASE is still our go-to choice for rugged cases and we’ll leave links for both Amazon and SUPCASE.com. Where you can use code POCKETNOW15 to get a 15% discount. If you want an older devices, the S20 FE is available for $350, while the Z Fold 2 is still available for $1000 if you have a device for trade-in. If you’re looking for an iPhone, Verizon currently has the 11 Pro for $400, leaving it at $599 on an installment plan. The OnePlus 8T is available on a Buy One Get One Free deal for 50% off, meaning you can get two entry level models for $1124. Finally, the Google Pixel 3 XL is available for just $300 over at B&H, if you want a great camera. We have more deals on Razer peripherals, LG smartphones and more.

Honor could launch smartphones with Google Mobile Services

Let’s move on to Honor, and a positive note for a change after all the mess that was 2020 for them. Recently, Huawei announced the sale of the Honor Brand due to “tremendous pressure” from the sanctions they’ve been imposed by the US. Well, a new report from a Russian publication claims that Google Mobile Services might be making a comeback to Honor devices, as they are no longer a Huawei subsidiary and, the sanctions imposed on Huawei don’t apply. The report claims that GMS could come back to Honor smartphones this Spring and the company has reportedly been working on two new lineups with support for GMS. This means that the new devices getting launched by Honor will no longer have Huawei’s App Gallery pre-installed, but older devices still won’t have access to GMS. They are currently preparing the Honor V40 which will debut on January 22 but, this one most likely won’t support Google Services. It is said to bring the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+, 8GB of RAM and 128GB with Android 10 running on Magic UI 4.0. We’ll see how this evolves as, this is kinda huge for other markets like Latin America now that Google Services are back.

LG’s smartphone business could be handed over to a Vietnamese manufacturer

LG’s new rollable smartphone could be canceled before its possible launch

Moving on to LG and more of a negative news, the rumors of the company selling their mobile division just got worse. On the last Pocketnow Daily we talked about how the company might sell or downsize their smartphone division due to losses over the years. Well, a new report claims that LG Electronics might want to sell their smartphone business to Vietnamese Conglomerate, Vingroup Co. This company is actually an ODM for LG and has been producing smartphones for them since 2018, being the third largest manufacturer in Vietnam after Samsung and OPPO. This company has a market capitalization of $16.5B and they reportedly want LG’s business in the United States, as they own 12.9% of the market on this side of the pond. Moving on to another report, at CES LG shared some teasers of their rollable smartphone which would debut in September. However, the Korea Herald reports that LG might pull the plug on the Rollable. The cause is that the Wing has sold less than 100K units since it launched, being considered a financial failure. And now, insiders are doubting that the Rollable might make it to the market, because of the hefty price tag. They claim that even if it outperformed the Wing, it might not be enough to keep the whole division alive. We hope that LG manage to turn things around as, they don’t make the best smartphones but they did pioneer a lot of what we see today, and now their more experimental phones are also great to see.

iPhone 13 again rumored to flaunt a smaller notch, upgraded camera for Pro models

I feel like every year we hear a ton of rumors of what we’re getting with the next iPhones and half of them don’t happen but, this year everything seems so consistent. According to a new report from DigiTimes, a ton of the rumors we’ve been hearing about will be happening. First off they mention that the notch will be shrinking down thanks to a Face ID redesign. However, they claim that it will only shrink vertically, while maintaining the same width. The report also adds that the smaller iPhones, meaning the 13 and the 13 mini, will come with superior CMOS Image sensors, the ones we currently have on the 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max. These sensors will reportedly be supplied by Sony and Apple will continue using the same 7-element system we currently get. Finally, the report also reiterates on the fact that all of the iPhone 13 family will bring sensor shift image stabilization which is currently exclusive to the 12 Pro Max. So once again, 2021 is sounding like an S year for the iPhones.

Samsung could be prepping to launch a cheaper, 4G Galaxy S21

You know, it’s funny but I seriously thought the S21 was like this year’s S20 FE, but it seems there’s a broader plan behind that. See, last year, when 5G wasn’t the norm yet, Samsung announced the S20 5G, but kept an LTE model with the Exynos for regions where 5G isn’t really available just yet. This year with the Exynos 2100, the company put 5G modems on all models. Well, a 4G variant of the Galaxy S21 was just certified by Bluetooth SIG with two different model numbers. Now, this could mean two things. Either Samsung is already working on the Fan Edition for this smartphone, or this is just a less expensive variant of the phone with no 5G support. Either way, this should be less expensive than the flagship model but, we don’t know if Samsung plans to downgrade the processors and other specs since they won’t be adding 5G. AS a recap of the specs, this means a 6.2-inch display, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a similar camera array at the back. We know that it’s pretty early for Samsung to be working on the FE variant for this phone and that this might not be the case at all. Regardless, for those asking if the $100 price difference between the S20 FE and the S21 is worth it, I say it is.

    Story of the day:

Next MacBook Air: Thinner, lighter, smaller, more powerful

Upcoming MacBook Pro could have a microSD card slot

Face ID support on iMac isn’t coming soon

And finally the hottest news today have to do with Apple. Let’s talk Macs as we’re currently expecting the next generation of Apple Silicon Macs and, we actually have a report for three separate line-ups here so bear with me. Let’s start with the upcoming MacBook Air as, a new report from Mark Gurman claims that the next MacBook Air will be a higher-end model and it will bring Apple’s MagSafe Charging technology and next-generation Apple Silicon processor. He also claims that Apple is considering making the laptop smaller, by shrinking down the bezels in the display, but it will still be a 13in panel. Apparently, there’s also some rumors of a 15in MacBook Air with 4 USB-C ports.. Finally.. But this isn’t certain at all. Since the MacBook Air was just refreshed, we’ll most likely see the changes Gurman mentioned until 2022, hopefully with 16 and 32-core processors. As for this year and moving on to the MacBook Pro, Gurman claims that the company is planning to bring back the SD Card Slot, which makes a TON of sense considering how Apple caters to content creators. The report also reiterates on details we’ve heard before, like the fact that it will feature a brighter panel, with higher contrast and that the Touch Bar is going away. Finally, we’re expecting a huge redesign for iMacs this year and one of the rumors was that we would get Face ID with this new design. Well, Gurman claims that it won’t happen, at least not for the models launched this year. So yeah, we should expect these iMacs and MacBook Pros around the middle of the year, and it looks like we’ll have to wait until 2022 for that higher end MacBook Air which sounds very enticing considering the Apple Silicon rumors.

    LG contemplates smartphone market exit

Now, let’s talk about LG on more of a negative note sadly. We thought that the Explorer project meant more innovation for the future, but that’s if there is one. Last year the company was turning a lot of heads with the LG Wing, but it looks like it didn’t turn enough pockets. According to a report from the Korea Herald, “a change is coming”. According to them, LG is set to make a cold judgement, whether that is to sell, withdrawal or downsize their smartphone business. But don’t worry, regardless of the change in direction, the employment will be maintained. It is tipped that about 60% of their staff will be moved and reassigned into other business units within the company or their affiliates but, the future for the other 40% is not clear just yet. Now, this is not the first time we’ve heard this kind of rumors from LG as, the company has reportedly posted operating looses for 23 consecutive quarters which is, pretty crazy. On another note, a report from The Elec also claims that LG has stopped making LCD panels for iPhones as Apple is fully moving on to OLED and because they will reportedly move on from the smartphone market. At the moment, we’re expecting LG’s rollable smartphone which will reportedly bring a 7.4in display as part of their Explorer Project. Just not sure if consumers will want to adopt it if these rumors continue to evolve.

Asus ROG Phone 4 appears in a hands-on video flaunting its secondary rear screen

New ASUS ROG Phone 4 may arrive with a massive battery

Let’s move the spotlight on to ASUS as you can’t deny the company’s disruption in the gaming smartphone market, and the ROG Phone is due for a refresh. Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been getting a couple of tidbits on what to expect but now we have some good information. First off, ASUS posted a poster of the phone on Weibo, showing the phone’s silhouette over the Aries constellation. Now, according to a tipster, the ASUS ROG Phone 4 will come in with a crazy, and I mean crazy 6000 mAh battery which will allegedly support 60 or 65W charging speeds. The phone recently went through Geekbench, revealing that it will be powered by the Snapdragon 888, 8GB of RAM and it will run Android 11 out of the box. Finally, a Chinese tipster posted an image of the actual device on to Weibo, showing off the back of the phone. It looks very ROG to say the least, with the camera module resembling its predecessor and a gray color variant with some accents for RGB lights, which were shown on a quick hands on video posted to YouTube. On that video you also get to see the phones display but it doesn’t really show anything. Judging by the poster and the constellation, we should expect this phone between March 21 and April 19 so, let’s see what we get. All that said, I’m seriously curious as to what you think, cause I have noticed a trend in drop in specs lately. Notice those RAM numbers.

Samsung Galaxy Note 21 Ultra might feature an under-display camera

Now let’s talk Samsung Galaxy Note 21 Ultra.. I know, the phone that still doesn’t have a codename. Last year we had a ton of polarizing rumors when it came to the future of this lineup, saying that it would be discontinued in favor of foldables but then Samsung cleared out the air and said that they wouldn’t be discontinuing any products. Well, we have a new trademark application spotted by LetsGoDigital, made by Samsung display for an Under the Display Camera and, it includes a smartphone. According to them, this is a hint of the Galaxy Note 21 Ultra bringing the technology and if you think about it, that should be Samsung’s next major release as, the Z Fold 3 isn’t exactly average consumer friendly for the price. The camera is listed as a “UPC” which was actually showcased by Samsung in a video, showing their Blade Bezel laptop back at CES with the display being just 1mm thick and weighing in at 130 grams, and we’re reportedly getting this technology for the Galaxy Note 21 Ultra. Now, there is a possibility and there have been some rumors that we could get this technology on the Z Fold 3 in the second half of 2021 but, that’s not clear yet. We’ll see what happens as, this is the first thing we hear about the upcoming Note and it’s kinda vague so, let’s see what we get.

    Story of the day:

Apple’s TouchID could return with the iPhone 13 lineup

iPhone 12 Pro Max’s sensor-shift stabilization might come to entire iPhone 13 family

And finally for the hottest news today, let’s move on to the iPhone 13 as, rumors keep ramping up but, and it looks like this will be more of an S year than anything. First off, we have even more confirmation on yesterday’s rumors from trusted tipsters. Someone just tweeted “need Touch ID on the iPhone again” with LoveToDream quoting the tweet and saying it’ll “be back soon”. Jon Prosser also replied to the original tweet saying “you’re getting it”. It is still unknown exactly how Apple will be bringing Touch ID back now that the home button is completely gone from the flagship line up, but the company has reportedly been testing under-the-display sensors, probably from Qualcomm. Then again, you have the iPad Air solution by placing it in the power button but we’ll see. Let’s move on to the cameras as, Apple introduced “Sensor-shift stabilization” with the iPhone 12 Pro Max but it looks like they want to expand. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Apple’s next generation iPhones will all come with sensor-shift stabilization technology. Another report from ETNews claimed that at least 2 models would bring the technology, with LG InnoTek supplying these components. Following on the IBIS we see in professional cameras, here what’s being stabilized is the sensor and not the lens, for better results, which you can definitely notice when it comes to video. DigiTimes also claims that the LiDAR is expanding to other models and that mmWave 5G will expand to models outside of the US as well. So yeah, it looks like this is a refinement year for the iPhones.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G SoC announced; OnePlus, OPPO, Motorola, Xiaomi to announce devices soon

Let’s stick to the official news but moving on to Qualcomm, as this morning we got the companies latest processor which is, a pretty interesting launch. The company just launched the Snapdragon 870 SoC, which is a follow up on the Snapdragon 865+, meaning it’s kind of a prequel to the 888 5G. This new SoC is built on a 7nm process and it comes with Qualcomm’s Kryo 585 CPU with a prime clock speed of 3.2 GHz. When it comes to the GPU, you’re getting the Adreno 650 GPU and it also brings both flavors of 5G, thanks to the Snapdragon X55 modem. This SoC supports things like 4K displays at 60Hz and QHD+ at 144Hz, 10-bit color, HDR10 and HDR10+. When it comes to the camera, it brings a Spectra 480 ISP which allows for up 200MP photo capture, it supports 25MP dual cameras and even 8K video. This chip will power different devices from companies like Motorola, OPPO, Xiaomi, and OnePlus, it even makes me wonder if this is the processor behind the OnePlus 9 Lite. So yeah, not even sure if this is to 2021 what the Snapdragon 765G was to 2020, but who knows. Expect products right now in Q1.

It looks very ROG to say the least, with the camera module resembling its predecessor and a gray color variant with some accents that’ll most likely bring RGB lights. Judging by the poster and the constellation, we should expect this phone between March 21 and April 19 so, let’s see what we get. All that said, I’m seriously curious as to what you think, cause I have noticed a trend in drop in specs lately. Notice those RAM numbers.

Android 12 to arrive with new feature that will improve storage management

We’re, probably a few weeks away from the Android Developer Beta so, some of the features we’re supposed to be getting have started to leak and get some traction. A couple of weeks ago we got a tweet from XDA saying that Android 12 might let you hibernate unused apps in order to free up space, kind of like what iOS does where it uninstalls the apps you don’t use after some time, which was actually a NextBit invention on Android years ago. Now we have a screenshot of the Android Open Source Code shows that we will be getting the feature. The system will manage the app’s hibernation state to optimize storage and it will clear the cache for this app. When an app is hibernated for a single user, it hibernates for the others but, your data will remain in the app so that once you need it again, you just have to press download and pick up right were you left it. It’s not exactly clear how this will work as, the developer preview isn’t out yet but, it’s definitely nice to have especially since the biggest complain for the S21 is that SD Card Slot missing. We’ll keep you posted as more leaks emerge as this one is not necessarily what I’d call new.

Apple working on redesigned iMacs and a smaller Mac Pro with in-house silicon

Let’s move on to Apple, and the upcoming Apple Silicon Macs as all eyes onto what the company is doing, especially Intels. According to a new report from Mark Gurman and Bloomberg, those redesigned MacBook Pros we talked about last week aren’t the only thing we’re getting from Cupertino this year. The report claims that Apple is planning to launch 2 new iMacs, to replace the Intel 21.5in and 27in models with Apple Silicon. Apparently the internals aren’t the only things changing, as Gurman claims that we are finally losing the thick bezels in favor of a cleaner display, kind of like what we get from the Pro Display XDR, and that also goes for the curved back which will now be flat. The report says that this will be one of the biggest visual updates to any Apple product this year. But wait, there’s more. Apple is reportedly looking to refresh the Mac Pro as well. This new model would retain the cheese grater design we got in 2019 and it will also retain an Intel processor, as one of the last machines to do so before Apple finishes the transition, it will most likely just bring better internals. However, we might be getting a second and smaller model which will feature an aluminum exterior that can resemble the Power Mac G4 Cube. Finally, Cupertino is working on a more affordable monitor, geared towards the average consumer but of course, it won’t bring the same level of brightness or contrast ratio as the Pro Display XDR. We just hope the stand isn’t sold separately on this one.

    Story of the day:

Apple testing foldable screens, considers in-screen fingerprint sensor for iPhones

And finally the hottest news today have to do again so early in the year with iPhone 13, and maybe even further. See Mark Gurman’s report digs into what we can expect soon, and what we can expect in the future, so let’s start with what you might not see yet. According to him Apple has already developed foldable screens for internal testing. Now, even if they are progressing with this project, apparently it is only limited to the screen stage, and they don’t really have a prototype of an actual folding iPhone just yet. Mark claims that one of the options on the table is a 6.7in panel, making it sound like this is actually a clamshell and not a tablet-like device. But moving on to projects we might get as soon as this year, it looks like Cupertino wants to bring back Touch ID which makes all the sense in the world considering these times. According to them, Apple is testing in-display fingerprint sensors for the 2021 iPhones, a rumor which we’ve heard multiple times. However, this doesn’t mean Face ID is dying, even though the notch is getting smaller we will reportedly be getting both ways to unlock your device. I mean if they can’t add it to the display we could at least get it in the power button. So far it looks like the major improvements for the iPhone 13 will come from hardware changes like the smaller notch, the high refresh rate display and now Touch ID.

Netflix might soon add support for Spatial Audio feature on AirPods Max and Pro

One of the best features to come out of True Wireless Earbuds and Headphones like the AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max has to be Spatial Audio. It basically tracks your head to offer a cinema-like surround audio experience, while you’re listening to music or watching a movie. The problem: It doesn’t work with every service. Well, according to a French website citing the Netflix development team, Netflix has been working on adding Spatial Audio to the platform since December of 2020. According to them, if everything goes as planned Netflix’s library will enable Spatial Audio support on the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max by Spring this year. Now, we know that Netflix already offers Dolby Atmos but with a few select titles, so we wonder how many titles will support this feature. Also, we’re wondering if they plan to make this available for other Earbuds supporting this type of technology, like the Galaxy Buds Pro we got yesterday. We’ll keep you posted once Netflix actually pushes the update out, and let’s hope it’s not limited to only Netflix titles, like seriously.

OnePlus 9 Lite might not be that “lite” in terms of prowess

Let’s move on to OnePlus as, last year they launched a crazy amount of products and it looks like they don’t plan to stop any time soon. We’ve heard multiple leaks claiming that we’ll be getting a Lite variant for the OnePlus 9 Series and now we have some new leaks about the specs we should expect. According to a tipster on Twitter there’s two different models and he also showed the model numbers, but sadly these will be exclusive to China and India at launch, probably expanding to Europe and the US later. In the tweet he also claims that this phone will powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 which, is kind of impressive considering this is a Lite variant. Other leaks claim that we should expect this phone with an AMOLED display running at 120Hz, Android 11 and support for 30W fast charging out of the box. As for the rest of the OnePlus 9 Series, we’re reportedly getting an earlier launch than usual and the company is focused on bringing a better camera, with many rumors pointing to some 48MP sensors tuned by Leica. If that early launch is true, we should start getting more leaks very soon.

Samsung will remove the bundled charger for more smartphones in the future

Samsung says S Pen support will come to more device categories after Galaxy S debut

And yes, yesterday was Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked but, as with every event we have a couple of extra tidbits of information of what we got and what the company’s doing in the future. Let’s start with the elephant in the room, the charger. A Samsung spokesperson mentioned in a Q&A, that they “believe that the gradual removal of the charger plugs and earphones from their in-box packaging can help address sustainable consumption issues and remove any pressure that the consumer may feels towards continually receiving unnecessary charger accessories with their new phones.” So yeah, it looks like Samsung is going green but at least, they have lowered the price of their 25W charger from $35 to $19. And, they will also be removing them from other line ups in the future. Now, let’s move on to the S Pen as, the Galaxy S21 Series is the first non-Note line up to support the stylus. On a statement from Samsung they’re also claiming that they “plan to expand the S Pen across additional devices in the future”. Hopefully they’re talking about the Z Fold line as, that’s what we all want to see. So yeah, it looks like we have to get used to S Pens on other phones and no chargers in our boxes. Also, keep in mind that the S Pen or the special case is not bundled in the box, so I’d take advantage of those pre-order perks to get one, cause they’re actually not stupid expensive.

Apple might add a vapor chamber cooling system to future iPhones: Kuo

Let’s move on to Apple and Ming Chi Kuo for the next couple of segments as his latest research note reveals a lot. For now, let’s focus on iPhones as, Kuo claims that Cupertino is highly likely to include new vapor chamber tech into an upcoming iPhone. Vapor Chamber technology basically involves the evaporation of a liquid within a specialized heat pipe and then it snakes its way through the device’s chassis. This means that the heat from the processor and other high load components causes the liquid to evaporate into a vapor that spreads through areas of low pressure. Apple has reportedly been working on these for quite some time but, the solutions haven’t matched their standards. Kuo claims that Apple is very optimistic about the improvement schedule in this technology and he expects that at least the high-end iPhone models will bring the technology in the near future. Vapor Chamber tech will help the adoption of 5G as the thermal loads for CPUs just keep increasing, especially now that we have 5G. The thing about it is, we don’t know if this technology will be ready for iPhone 13 but, we hope it is as better cooling allows for more features while ensuring a better battery life.

    Story of the day:

Next MacBook Pros: Much faster processors, MagSafe, upgraded displays, and no Touch Bar

Apple working on redesigned iMacs and a smaller Mac Pro with in-house silicon

And finally, for the hottest news today, let’s talk about Apple Silicon Macs, as I’m sure you didn’t think that Apple’s M1 was gonna be it. Yeah that was just the tip of the iceberg. Mark Gurman and Ming Chi Kuo have a lot of common ground on today’s reports. According to them, Apple is working on refreshing the 14in and 16in variants for the MacBook Pro. Both of these devices will be moving away from Intel processors and will be powered by next generation Apple Silicon chips which will be upgraded with more cores and enhanced graphics. According to other reports, Apple is testing chips with 16 and 32 cores even when it comes to GPUs as, these will also power the upcoming iMacs and probably a Mac Pro model. Now, when it comes to the display, Cupertino will finally make the jump to mini-LEDs, meaning you’ll get brighter panels with higher contrast. Both of the reports also claim that MagSafe is making a comeback allowing the computers to charge faster but, the computers will still bring multiple USB-C ports, they just won’t be used for power, or I’m sure it’ll remain optional. Finally, and probably one of our favorite updates, the report claims that Apple will be getting rid of the Touch Bar which was introduced back in 2016. Now, when it comes to the design, they will look similar to the ones we currently have with some minor design changes and hopefully some smaller bezels with the new display technology. We could be getting these by the middle of the year but, they could come out at any point this year.. I’m looking at you March Event.
