Click this link to join the hangout! . Building your own gestures

2013 is coming to a close, and slipping in under the wire is a brand new operating system brought to us by Jolla called Sailfish. You can check out our coverage of Sailfish from MWC 2013 all the way to our quick impressions having actually used the device, or at least as much as we Americans could use it. One thing that really stuck with us was the major use of gestures in the interface. Just about anything you want to do comes with its own gesture. Now, we here at Pocketnow have special places in our hearts, down near but just to the left of the cockles of our hearts, for gesture-based ...

Nokia pulls HERE Maps from iTunes

When Apple Maps turned out to be a fiasco in the early days, the company’s CEO issued an apology letter at the end of September 2012, in which Tim Cook also suggested some alternatives to Apple’s own solution. Among the recommendations, there was a line to “use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app”. Soon after, Nokia made its own

Oppo Find 7 display size, 2K resolution, confirmed

The Oppo Find 7 has been both rumored, leaked, and teased by the manufacturer itself, and the latest information we received via the official Twitter account was a confirmation of its 2K screen. At that point, about the only unknown variable of the Find 7′s screen was the actual size of the display, something Oppo addresses in its latest teaser. 5.5-inches, that’s how big the display will be, and, at a resolution of 2560×1440, that will result in a PPI rating of 538. Furthermore, Oppo ...

After AT&T failed to buy T-Mobile, here’s why a Sprint/T-Mobile merger could make sense

In these United States there are essentially two carriers that offer “unlimited everything”: Sprint and T-Mobile. Both have advantages over each other, as well as the other major players in the cellular “game”. Then again, they both have some fairly obvious disadvantages as well. After a failed bid by AT&T just a few short years ago, is another merger even possible? Could the advantages of both Sprint and T-Mobile somehow cancel out the disadvantages of the other? Here’s why a Sprint T-Mobile merger just might make sense. Buyouts Continue reading »

2014 HTC One, Sony Smartwatch 3, Samsung fitness band & more – Pocketnow Daily

Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk about the recent rumors of a Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, which should launch at CES 2014. We continue with Samsung as we get some reports that the company is building a fitness band, aside from their current fitness gear. Yes, Samsung continues, this time with Tizen and some leaked specs of their first device running the OS. Sony then follows as we hear that the Smartwatch 3 has just reached the FCC for review. We end today’s show talking about the 3D printed 2014 HTC One that just got leaked. All this and more after the break. ...

LG could be working on multiple wearables for 2014

With the releases of products like Pebble and the Galaxy Gear, it sure felt like 2013 could have been the year that wearables really took off. Maybe if Google Glass would have hit shelves this holiday season that might have come true, but as we learn more and more about devices right over the horizon, 2014 is starting to seem like it could really overshadow the present year: Glass should finally be ready for the public, and an Apple iWatch could be a huge catalyst in generating mainstream interest. Just the other day we were talking about ...

How to get the Google Dialer on non-Nexus phones

Easily, one of the coolest features brought along with KitKat – or Android 4.4 – on the Nexus 5 is the Phone application. In retrospect, it’s something which should have existed since mobile phones married mobile broadband connections. Nearby businesses are discoverable straight from the dialer. Open the Phone application and tap the search bar at the top of the display. Speak or type any general or specific term, such as “coffee.” The three nearest results will appear in the Nearby Places section. Tap ...

HTC infographic spells-out the Android update process: why DOES it take so long?

Android’s come a long way over the past several years, and the problems we saw with fragmentation – how not all devices are running the same system software and consequently don’t share the same abilities – have really gotten a lot better. That’s far from saying that they’re a thing of the past, but improvements have been popping up all over the place: a heightened focus on services rather than Android updates has let Google introduce new features faster than ever before, and even the OEMs ...

How Samsung can fix its tablet lineup

Samsung has more going for it than arguably any other company in the mobile space right now. It’s very nearly usurped Google as the name consumers associate with Android, and while its precise share of the market ebbs and flows, no one’s even close to competing with it on the same level – well, Apple, sure, if we’re looking at the US, but globally, Samsung’s an unstoppable force. And there are plenty of reasons why Samsung deserves to be enjoying the success it is; even though we might have been won over by the HTC One this year, the Galaxy S series of phones ...

Is there no proper way to make gaming-focused smartphone hardware?

I love games. I’ve been playing video games and board games my entire life. I don’t have nearly as much time as I used to have for gaming, and I have yet to pull the trigger on a current-generation console. But I’ve spent a lot of time and money on mobile gaming. And every chance I get, I like to break out a smartphone or tablet and get in a race or two, play a round of Phase 10, or if I have more time, get into a lengthy round of

My fondest tech wish for 2014: a global away message

Like most members of the Pocketnow team, I tote a lot of gadgets. After all, “Captain2Phones” isn’t just a Twitter handle – it’s a lifestyle. It’s also a massive, ridiculous understatement: at any given time, my online persona is logged in to many different mobile devices, all of which titter and chirp incessantly when even the most minor of messages arrives. Couple that with a very busy inbox and a slew of friends for whom the enter key is a form of punctuation all its own, and sometimes I ...
