Samsung innovation

This coming week, we will be introduced to the latest in a line of reasonably successful phablets. The original Samsung Note arguably helped shape the “phablet” space when it debuted three years ago. It was in and of itself an innovation. Sure, it’s just a smartphone with a big screen, but sometimes the simplest innovations are the biggest (no pun intended) and most successful. And yes, it’s at this point that I grudgingly have to admit that a heart monitor is an “innovation”. Now if you’ll excuse me I have to go vomit.Samsung has done its share of trying out new things over ...

Samsung Galaxy S5 – After The Buzz, Episode 38 (Video)

Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review. Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity. For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not many ...

HTC One E8 lands in the US with carrier support

A couple weeks back we saw signs that the HTC One E8 – the plastic One M8 – was gearing-up to come to America, as Sprint posted a video to YouTube highlighting the smartphone. Problem was, there were no details about how or when sales might begin, and shortly thereafter Sprint pulled the video down. Did it get cold feet, or had that clip just gone live a little too early? Today we get our answers, with ...

Latest Sony IFA teaser offers some mysterious measurements

Quite a few smartphone manufacturers have been hinting at their IFA 2014 product launches, if not outright spilling the beans, and while Sony got off to a slow start, it’s recently been really stepping-up its efforts, most recently delivering a teaser video featuring the silhouettes of three devices, presumed to represent the Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, and Z3 Tablet Compact. Today Sony’s UK Twitter account released a new IFA teaser, but this one’s proving to be a bit harder to figure ...

What’s in our bag for IFA 2014: Pocketnow Insider

When it comes to trade shows, we at Pocketnow keep it low-key. As we discussed in detail on a recent episode of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, we don’t have all the resources of a major media corporation, so we’re often called upon to do a lot with a little. That’s been the case with the last few trade shows we attended, and IFA 2014 is no different. What’s in our bag for IFA 2014: Pocketnow Insider appeared first on Pocketnow.

Nokia brings HERE Maps to Android, exclusively for Samsung models

When Samsung introduced its curved-screen Gear S smartwatch the other day, it announced an interesting collaboration, partnering with Nokia to bring HERE maps to the wearable for delivering navigation services. We also saw teasers for this HERE/Gear effort on social media, but it wasn’t clear if the Gear S was the beginning and end of the partnership, or if there’d be more to it. Well, today the other shoe drops, as Nokia announces HERE for Android, exclusively on Samsung ...

NFC chip finally spotted in Apple iPhone 6 leaks

One of the many rumors surrounding Apple’s plans to deliver its iPhone 6 lineup has concerned the presence (or not) of support for NFC. Granted, such talk is hardly new, and last year we were hearing about possible NFC support for the iPhone 5S – hell, we were even seeing NFC rumors surrounding the iPhone 5 back in 2012, continuing up until just hours before the phone’s launch event. So of course,
