Huawei’s 2014 results show significant growth, but short of target

It’s clear that if you ask OEMs which is the best market to address at the moment, the answer will most likely be China. We’ve seen top players like Apple and Samsung make significant changes in their lineups in order to address the Chinese market, and we also see top players like

Lumia 1520 color options expand to European countries

The Lumia 1520 is not only the largest Windows Phone money can buy, but it’s also one of the most powerful models to reach the market. We highly praised Microsoft for the existence of the Lumia 1520, even though a ton of people agree that it’s far too big for the average user. That said, the launch of the Lumia 1520 on AT&T left certain exclusive rights when it came to color options, and that just ended. If you ...

HTC promises “huge surprises that will blow you away” for 2015

HTC may still have a couple rungs to climb on the smartphone manufacturer ladder before it’s up there with companies like LG (to say nothing of Samsung), but 2014 has seen the company deliver some very attractive smartphones, interesting accessories, and hardware that crossed platform boundaries – not to mention an overdue return to tablets. What’s next for HTC? Senior Global Online Communications ...

Apple lawsuit claims iOS is eating up too much storage space

Back in the early days of 2014 we took a look at a breakdown of several popular phones, ranking them all based on how much storage space was actually available to users. Apple appeared to be doing quite well, with both the iPhone 5S and 5C arriving with between 70 and 80 percent of their total storage (for the 16GB models) available out of the box – compare that with Samsung and the Galaxy S4, which had less than 55 percent of its space free. But even Apple’s relatively small iOS footprint there ...

How to retrofit your smartphone or tablet with Qi wireless charging (video)

We’ve long been fans of Qi Wireless Charging, but not all devices support the standard. Devices that include Qi can be recharged through electromagnetic induction rather than by directly connecting to a power source via  a charging cable. This requires some additional components inside Qi-compatible devices as well as a “base station” or charging pad, but once you’ve tried it, you’ll very likely be hooked. However, if your phone or tablet didn’t come with Qi support built-in, you may have thought you were out ...

Apple Pay glitch reportedly has Apple replacing iPhones

We haven’t heard any reports that claim that Apple Pay has taken the world by storm, but we do know that the service has gained some dramatic market share in just a few months of service. These reports even mention that a good percentage of users are not just testing the service, but actually using it more than once over ...

T-Mobile’s 2015 predictions speak highly of the Apple Watch

Whether you admit it or not, John Legere is most famous for making the T-Mobile brand something to talk about in the US. His hilarious demeanor and his “Un-carrier” strategy has brought T-Mobile back to the lime light after a failed buy-out by AT&T just a few years ago. Legere is also famous for his predictions, and today he’s ...

Amazon’s latest free app bundle has $110 worth of software

Does Amazon even have an app store anymore? Clearly, it has an app distribution system, but we’re talking more about the “selling” bit. After all, the intent is to make a little money through app sales, right? Well, someone at Amazon clearly hasn’t gotten that message because the company seems to keep doing everything it can to give apps away for free. It was just one week ago when we checked out a whole slew of normally-paid apps Amazon was handing out for free, and now we’ve got ...

Best Android Apps: Movy

While Facebook and Skype are busy fighting it out for video messaging dominance, a new app called Movy has quietly entered the fray with a few compelling hooks of its own. It’s pronounced “moh-vee” (as in Moby with a “v”) and it just might have what it takes to surpass the usual suspects in the rapidly growing video chat sphere.

Movy

Movy app

To really understand how Movy works, you have to look at it as a cross between Skype and an open social media platform. On the one hand, you have the ability to send private video messages to individuals, or groups of individuals, from your smartphone contacts list. Movy calls this your “private stream.”

On the other hand, there’s also the ability to post public video messages for all the Movy audience to see, appropriately referred to as your “public stream.” When you post to your public stream, anyone can view and respond to your message – turning it into something of a 21st century version of good old AOL chat, only better.

Probably the most important feature about Movy is that there are no caps to the length of video messages you can record. The only limitation you’ll experience is the time it takes your video to upload from your smartphone to the virtual world, which could be sizable if you’re sharing a full-blown presentation. Potential uses for this kind of service expand well beyond simple social communication; having no video cap makes it rather handy for work-related needs as well..

The app boasts a handsome UI that can incorporate your Google+ or Facebook info to create your profile. On installation, it asks for access to your contacts list so that you can easily send video messages from within the app.

Unlike other free video messaging services, though, Movy distinguishes itself by not requiring your recipients to have the app installed in order to receive your message. You can send video messages to the uninitiated on any platform, and they can view it from any standard browser (they’ll need to install the app to respond, of course). Just don’t go too wild bugging your friends or co-workers with vids they may not always want.

Support is robust, even though the app should be easy enough to pick up on your own. It gives you brief video tutorials that show you how to navigate and get the most of the app. Camera orientation for either front-facing or rear-facing video is supported and easily toggled. You can also share your recorded videos across Facebook, Google+ and Twitter.

Movy requires Android 4.0 and up and is available for free at Google Play.

Most exciting things of 2014

As usual, at the end of every year, we’re looking back at what happened over the course of twelve exciting months — that got us a lot of extraordinary products and services. We not only do this because it’s fun and important to recap some crucial events, but also because we usually also look at the future, trying to anticipate what the next year will bring us; and, in order to realistically try to predict things from the future, we need to know what happened in the past.So far, we looked at what we think were the
