With MWC Ending, All Eyes on Samsung

MWC had a lot to offer this year, and while we didn’t get any big news of things like a PureView Lumia, we got to check out a lot of interesting hardware. One hugely anticipated phone we knew wouldn’t be making an appearance was Samsung’s Galaxy S IV, but now that the MWC is wrapping-up, our attention moves back to this Android flagship. Sometimes it seems like those of us covering the smartphone world live in a constant state of anticipation; if we’re not counting the days until a trade show or press event, ...

Sapphire Screen vs. Gorilla Glass: Scratch Test (Video)

That $10,000 Android we looked at a couple weeks back, the Vertu Ti, might not have been the most impressive phone in the specs department, but it did have one killer feature: a screen made of synthetic sapphire. Single crystals of aluminum oxide like this have a Mohs scale hardness of nine, meaning you’re going to need something in the same league of hardness as other sapphires or diamonds in order to scratch them. At the MWC this year, we got to check out a demonstration of just what kind of damage sapphire ...

The Smartwatch I Want Doesn’t Exist Today, but It Could

I have always have a fascination with tiny, supplementary gadgets that change the way we interface with staple devices. The S Pen, for example, is a controller for the Galaxy Note series that unlocks tons of functionality. To this day, while using the Nexus 4 as my daily driver, I miss using the S Pen. And other styli simply can’t compare. When the inPulse Smartwatch by Allerta was first announced in late 2009, I could’t help but swoon. At the time, I was was die-hard BlackBerry fan (to the point I refused to own anything else) and could not wait to get my hands on this ...

When Nokia announced its new, more affordable Windows Phone 8 models earlier this week, the Lumia 520 and Lumia 720, it gave us some initial pricing and retail launch info. Samsung Announces Passbook-Like Wallet; Should Google Be Worried?

Google’s been struggling for over a year now to drum-up interest in Google Wallet, and despite the arrival of more and more Androids with NFC capabilities, it faces some formidable competition from alternate mobile payment systems with carrier backing, like the threat posed by Isis. Now Google could have one more player to worry about, with Samsung announcing its own partnership with Visa and demonstrating its own Wallet app. While Samsung Wallet and its Visa deal are separate arrangements, together they could draw users away from ...

10 Year Throwback: Photoshop on a Smartphone (Video)

Many of my friends often consider me to be about 5 years ahead of everyone else in terms of the tech world.  With today’s release of Photoshop Touch for Android and iOS Smartphones, here’s another example.  Back in 2002 on July 17th, I was at Macworld with a number of industry experts as well as the new Photoshop product manager, John Nack who has since become a popular Adobe blogger.  I ...

Dual-Screen Android: NEC Medias W Hands-On (Video)

It has been a while since we’ve seen a proper dual-screened smartphone. Sure, we just looked at the fascinating YotaPhone, which is very interesting for what it does, but we’re talking about phones with a pair of regular, full-color, full-motion screens. Following in the footsteps of the Kyocera Echo or Samsung Doubletime, ...

Jolla Sailfish OS: Software Tour (Video)

A little earlier this month we had the opportunity to chat with Jolla CIO Stefano Mosconi about the upcoming Sailfish OS. Originally stemming from MeeGo, birthed under Nokia’s watch, Sailfish has since gone its own way and is maturing into a mobile platform getting ready for launch. This week at the Mobile World Congress, we tracked down Jolla and Mosconi again, getting the opportunity in the process to check out a live Sailfish demo. We check out how notifications work, look at the Sailfish take on a status bar, ...
