HTC tipped to discard One M moniker: enter the HTC 10 [UPDATE: W10M?]

We’ve come a long way from calling HTC’s next-gen flagship O2 to a much more logical and recognizable One M10, with the weird-sounding Perfume filed under, well, weird codenames, but as it turns out, the Taiwanese device manufacturer might ultimately be looking to pull a Sony. After saying goodbye to the perennially troubled

Will we be burned again by HTC Aero camera rumors?

HTC has been in our optical rodeo way too many times. Camera bad. Camera worse. Camera disaster. Sounds like drama much? Probably, but those assessments prove well against the changing camera landscape on smartphones. And each time we find ourselves in the wake of iteration after disappointment after innovation,

Do you want a dual-boot smartphone? (Poll)

HTC recently announced a new version of its flagship HTC One M8 smartphone and the only difference is that it’s running Windows Phone 8.1.1. This instantly made many of us remember the old days when HTC was king of smartphones in part because it allowed the hacking community to have free reign over their phones. The comments on our first impressions of the device lit up with wishes and hopes for dual-boot capabilities.Back in 2002, HTC released a touch screen ...

What other Android phones should get the WP8 treatment?

If there was a unicorn of a device for mobile tech geeks the world over, it was a Lumia device running Android. Well, we finally got one, and it kind of sucked. But if there’s a step below a unicorn, maybe a pegasus, or leprechaun, or even a portly saint in a jolly red suit, it’s probably the HTC One M8 running Windows Phone. Yesterday, we got our Santa Clause. The HTC One M8 for Windows was released yesterday, bringing Microsoft’s operating system onto arguably the most beautiful phone of the year. ...

Android 4.4.3 rolling out to European HTC One M7 devices

Good news for those of you toting a European original HTC One (or One M7, if that’s how you’d like to call it): the European HTC One M7 Android 4.4.3 update has been approved by HTC and is now rolling out to users, starting in areas like Romania and Slovakia. The Android 4.4.3 update includes the security fixes from Android 4.4.4, so you need not worry that you aren’t running the latest version of Android after taking the update yourself. This update will more than likely be one of the One M7′s last ever, though it’s certainly possible (and some might even say ...

HTC Desire 816 versus HTC One M8 (video)

Comparing a mid-level smartphone to a high-end smartphone isn’t exactly what you’d call “playing fair” — then again, it’s not supposed to be. Here’s how the HTC Desire 816 stacks up against the HTC One M8. Both devices run Android Kitkat 4.4.2 with Sense UI 6, although certain features found on the One M8 are missing in the Desire 816. Tap-to-wake is missing on the 816, as are ...

Hands on with the Sprint HTC One M8 Harman/Kardon Edition (Video)

Today Sprint announced a special version of the HTC One M8 called the Harman/Kardon Edition which is basically a normal HTC One M8 except with a few extra special software editions and audio enhancements that showcase services from Sprint, Spotify, and Harman/Kardon. It’s also got a special black color on the back with champagne accents and it will include special high-quality Harman/Kardon earbud headphones. We got to try out some of the new features in New York City today and there are quite a few new additions ...

Making the HTC M8 too much like the One could be a colossal mistake (or pure genius)

Smartphone customers are always on the lookout for the “perfect” smartphone. So far, we haven’t seen it, not yet anyway. There’s always something that’s just not “good enough” to be perfect. The camera isn’t great. It doesn’t have an SD card slot. The battery is too small. There’s no Qi wireless charging in it. The screen uses the “wrong” technology. The colors aren’t “Miniman-tastic” (or is it “Miniman-ilicious”). You get my point. In short, manufacturers have to keep pandering to a ...

HTC One 2014: here’s what I’m wishing for

I’m a fan of HTC products. Anyone who’s been around very long probably remembers how I recall my days with the HP iPaq with great fondness. That device was well-built, stylish, and rugged! I teamed that little Pocket PC up with an IR keyboard and typed countless pages of notes from my college courses on it. While others with laptops hunted for power outlets, I just sat down and tapped away. Back then HTC built devices that other OEMs sold with their brands stamped all over them. Eventually HTC ...

Why are people abandoning yesterday’s flagship phones in favor of a Nexus 5?

Make no mistake, I’m a Nexus fan. I’ve owned every Nexus smartphone to date. I’ve passed up many of the “flagship” models from other OEMs, opting instead to stick with “older” technology. Put another way, I’m usually 6-months out-of-date when it comes to the “latest and greatest” smartphone because I’m not jumping to LG, HTC, Samsung, or Sony‘s newest phone. ...

Google Nexus 7 deals, KitKat for Google Edition phones, US Moto G & more – Pocketnow Daily

Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Google’s Nexus 7 deals, which are ironically not better than the deals we had already talked about a couple of days ago. We then talk about the Google Edition phones receiving Android 4.4 KitKat as of today. Then it’s patent talk as we go through Samsung’s probable new flagship feature for the Galaxy S 5. Apple follows the news as the company has also filed a patent, but this time in order to bring Lytro technology into the cameras of their future devices. We end today’s show talking about the launch of the Moto G ...

Android isn’t laggy, but your cheap phone or tablet may be

I talk with a lot of people about mobile technology (a LOT of people), and I read a lot of comments. A common thread that comes up when people learn that I’m Joe the Android Guy™ is the sentiment that “Android is laggy”. So let’s set the story straight: Android isn’t laggy — but your cheap phone or tablet may be. The problem isn’t with the operating system. Android itself is plenty snappy, but Android does things a bit differently than other mobile operating systems. Android runs tasks all the time, ...

These devices have Android 4.4 ROMs available

Before anyone gets their hopes up, as of right this instant, the only device that has an official build of Android 4.4 KitKat is Google’s own Nexus 5. That will change as soon as Google releases updates for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10, and as other OEMs begin pushing updates to their flagship devices. HTC has already committed to releasing its updates “within 90 days“. In the meantime, Google has already pushed KitKat into the AOSP, and you know what that means: custom ROMs! Custom ROMs come in ...

Sprint HTC One Android 4.3 update going out

As we’ve heard last week, the Android 4.3 update for the US HTC One devices didn’t manage to meet the September 30 deadline. Luckily, we’re already seeing the refresh being pushed out, at least to Sprint’s version, which is good news for the skeptical or pessimistic who were thinking it will be delayed longer. Jason Mackenzie, HTC USA’s head, has informed everyone of the good news. Everyone with a Sprint HTC One, that is. The refresh should be available for you to ...

TLDR: I can get a 64GB microsd card for under $50, so why are 64GB smartphones so expensive?

Before the iPhone was born, everyone wanted an iPod. Back then you could carry around your entire music collection with you. Today, times have changed. MP3s have gotten larger and higher-quality, and individual songs are now easier to find and much easier to download.  Taken together, the size of our music libraries has increased significantly since the “good ol’ days” of the original iPod. Luckily, iPods have improved as well, but now most of us use our smartphones to do that which our iPods used to. Interestingly, a good deal of smartphones still come with only 8GB or ...
