A High-End Smartphone Without The High-End Price Tag

It’s not often that a smartphone comes along that packs in all the bells and whistles we’ve come to know and love - err demand - in a smart device, that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. But, that’s exactly what the Axon 10 Pro - the latest flagship smartphone from ZTE -  does!

The Axon 10 Pro features a sleek, elegant design and brilliant display. It has a 3D-curved Corning Gorilla Glass display on the front and back and is encased in a high-strength aluminum alloy frame. There’s a triple rear camera, and the whole device measures just under 8mm thick.

The 6.47” screen is the first smartphone to integrate AMOLED and touchscreen into a quad-curved display. They’ve also - very smartly - integrated Chip on Pi into the device, which has helped to reduce the bottom bezel allowing the device to have a larger screen and provides more antenna room under the display for a stronger network signal.

The Axon 10 Pro screen has an in-display fingerprint sensor, front camera facial recognition and an RBG sensor to adjust the temperature of the screen when inside, outside, or in reading mode.

On the inside, you’ll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor, which as it happens is the same processor you’ll find in the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10. What that means is you’re going to get a fast phone that has smooth multitasking and provides a great user experience.

It comes with 8GB of RAM, or you can upgrade to the 12GB model, and 256GB of memory. There’s also a MicroSD slot that can hold up to 2TB of additional data!

The Axon 10 Pro has a large 4,000mAh battery and uniquely customizable battery software, which means you’re not going to lose juice!

Supporting the F2FS file system, combined with the smarts to learn your behaviors, this highly intelligent device will get smarter over time. It’s ready to launch with Android P OS and ZTE is promising it will provide an update to the next major release of Android before the end of the calendar year.

Today’s smartphones are known more for their stunning picture quality and ability to take amazing video. Good for us, ZTE thought of that too. With AI Portrait Lighting Adjustment, AI Motion Capture and AI scene recognition, the Axon 10 Pro brings all the benefits of AI to picture-taking.

And with optical and digital zoom, 20x smart tracking, new portrait types and other modes all optimized by artificial intelligence - your selfie game will be on point.

As if that wasn’t enough, it also features DTS:X Ultra 3D sound, which provides a stunning on-the-go concert experience through the in-ear headphones included in the box.

Alternatively, you can hear and optimize the sound through its dual speakers, for a center-stage experience in the comfort of your own home. Either way the Axon 10 Pro offers exceptional sound quality for videos and music.

It’s also been optimized to enhance your gaming experience, ensuring games load quickly and play smoothly.

The Axon 10 Pro is the ideal device for those of us who are increasingly frustrated by the rising cost of smartphones that feature only minor performance enhancements. And when it comes to what really matters in a smartphone: speed, performance, memory, clarity and camera - you can’t deny you’re getting the best bang for your buck.

The Axon 10 Pro is available for preorder in the US now! Get yours online at zteusa.com and through participating retailers Newegg Inc. and B&H Photo.

And the best part, the 8GB model is only $549 while the 12GB versions is $599. That’s a fraction of the cost of what other smartphone manufacturers are charging! ZTE may be onto something with the new Axon 10 Pro.

Malicious Android apps hijacked phones to click on ads

Android users have been warned that certain apps may have hijacked their devices to click on malicious ads.

New research from Symantec has shown that cybercriminals are using apps to auto-click on mobile ads to generate a profit.

Two main culprits were identified by the security company, with the compromised apps having been downloaded more than 1.5 million times after going undetected on the Play Store for more than a year.

Hijacked

The malicious apps both come from a developer called Idea Master, one being a notepad app (Idea Note: OCR Text Scanner, GTD, Color Notes) and the other a fitness app (Beauty Fitness: daily workout, best HIIT coach)

Symantec's researchers found that the apps utilise embedded advertisements, which are typically placed strategically beyond the normal viewable area of mobile device’s screen area. This will then initiate an automated ad-click process that stealthily generates revenue for the criminals.

Users affected by the apps may see their device's battery draining far faster than usual, as well as performance of the device slowing down.

Some users have even been stung by an an increase in their mobile data usage due to frequent visits to ad sites, potentially leading to higher than expected bills.

Symantec says the two apps are still present on the Play Store, and has urged any users that have downloaded either program to uninstall it immediately.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro vs Note 7 Pro: What’s different?

Xiaomi just unveiled the Redmi Note 8 Pro in China, which is now its latest budget smartphone. It succeeds the Redmi Note 7 Pro launched earlier this year, and brings quite a few upgrades, some of which were previously unseen in this price segment.

The Redmi Note series have been bestsellers in India since a few generations, thanks to its high value for money offerings in the budget segment of India. The Redmi Note 7 Pro was a very successful device that also drove the adoption of 48MP cameras on smartphones. Similarly, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the world’s first smartphone with a 64MP camera and the new MediaTek G90T chipset. Here are all the differences and upgrades between the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Redmi Note 7 Pro.

Design

Redmi Note 8 Pro

The Redmi Note 7 Pro implements a glass sandwich design with Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and the back, with the camera array tucked in the corner. The Redmi Note 8 Pro sticks to the same choice of materials but brings a curved back with cameras placed along the spine of the phone, which is slightly identical to Xiaomi's latest K20-series. Also, the Redmi branding finds itself vertically placed in line with the camera setup.

The fingerprint scanner is also located on the back on both the phones.

Display

The Note 7 Pro has a 6.3-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 which equates to an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The Redmi Note 8 Pro retains that resolution but opts for a bigger 6.53-inch display with a waterdrop notch on the top for the front camera which might be a little bigger than the dot notch on the Note 7 Pro. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 on both the models.

Considering the slightly bigger display area, the ppi(pixels per inch, the unit for pixel density) drops from 409 to 395, but the difference in sharpness won't be perceivable. As mentioned earlier, the fingerprint scanner is not under the display.

Performance

Processors primarily determine the performance of a smartphone. The Redmi Note 7 Pro has a Snapdragon 675 chipset which was one of the best processors of its time in this price segment. The Redmi Note 8 Pro opts for a 12nm gaming-centric MediaTek Helio G90T chipset which is expected to bring a great gaming experience. The last time we saw a MediaTek SoC powering a Redmi Note device was  in 2015 with the Note 2.

That is paired with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, instead of starting at 4GB as the predecessor did.

Camera

Redmi Note 8 Pro cameras

48MP cameras were all the rage in the first half of 2019 and the Note 7 Pro was one of the most popular devices to bring it to the masses. However, the other camera was a modest 5MP depth sensor.

With the Redmi Note 8 Pro, Xiaomi has brought one of the most versatile camera packages seen in this segment, with a quad-camera arrangement. The primary camera is a 64MP f/1.8 sensor with PDAF, along with an 8MP ultrawide lens with a 13mm focal length, a 2MP macro lens and another 2MP depth sensor. The front camera also gets a bump up to 20MP from 13MP.

The 64MP Samsung Bright ISOCELL GW1 image sensor is expected to make an appearance in a lot more smartphones coming later this year such as the Realme XT.

Battery and Charging

The Redmi Note series has always been known to offer big batteries. The Note 7 Pro shipped with a respectable 4,000 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. Ever since the Redmi Note 3, Xiaomi had been offering a battery this size, but with the Redmi Note 8 Pro, it has finally moved an even bigger 4,500 mAh battery that supports 18W Quick Charge 4+, over USB Type-C.

Both the phones retain the 3.5mm headphone jack, and the Note 8 also adds NFC. Storage, too, is expandable on both the devices via the hybrid SIM slot.

Price in India

The Redmi Note 7 Pro starts at Rs 13,999 for the 4 + 64GB variant in India, and goes up to Rs 16,999 for the top 6 + 128GB model. The Redmi Note 8 Pro will come to India in October, but the Chinese pricing indicates a very similar price point. The 6 + 64GB variant is priced at 1,399 yuan which converts to about Rs 14,000 and goes up to 1,799 yuan for the 8 + 128GB model.

Here are the best retro console revivals

When it comes to gaming, the past was a simpler time. You bought your console, paid for your games, and then you sat down and played them.

No online multiplayer, no downloadable content, no guides to spoil all the fun, and no patches to get in the way of you playing. Sounds nice, doesn't it?

Over the years, several companies have attempted to bring this simplicity back with a variety of retro console revivals.

These boxes plug into the back of your TV, and use emulation software to allow you to play a number of games that would otherwise be impossible (or at least, very expensive) to find as a physical cartridges.

Here are our top picks of the best boxes to have revived these retro consoles and their classic games.

UPDATE: We've added both the SNES Classic Mini and PlayStation Classic to our list of the best retro games consoles. Click through the guide to find out which could take you on a delightful trip down memory lane and which is best to leave in the past.

Following the massive success of the NES Classic Mini, Nintendo has returned to its 90s days in a more compact form with the SNES Classic Mini.

The box plugs into your TV via HDMI and comes with 21 pre-loaded games (one of which is the unreleased Star Fox 2!) as well as two mini controllers that will allow you to take advantage of multiplayer.

The drawback of Nintendo's retro consoles is that once you've exhausted the fairly limited library you won't be able to play anything else - the console doesn't accept the original cartridges, nor does it let you download more content.

Read our full review: SNES Classic Mini review

Nintendo is going back to the start of its gaming conquest with the NES Classic Edition, a compact version of its iconic 80s console.

The box plus into your TV via HDMI and comes with 30 built-in games and a mini NES controller.

The bad news is that once you've exhausted that library you won't be able to play anything else - the console doesn't accept the original cartridges, nor does it let you download more content.

Still, for US$59.99/AU$99.95 (around £45) it's a nice nostalgic proposition, and one we'll be picking up when it rolls around on November 11.

The ZX Spectrum was one of the first mainstream home computers to come out when it was released in the UK in 1982.

It was to the UK what the Commodore 64 was in the US, a trojan horse for getting computers into homes, and a device that would inspire a generation of coders.

Yes, its keyboard was a bit of a mushy rubber mess, but with a software library that contained classics such as the original Elite, Football Manager, and Manic Miner, you can't exactly fault the little console that could.

The Sinclair ZX Spectrum Vega looks nothing like the original console. Rather than having a full QWERTY keyboard, the console is instead packed completely into a controller which has 1,000 games built-in.

The device is available now for £99.99 (around $130), but the manufacturer Retro Computers has recently completed an IndieGoGo campaign to fit the console into a handheld form factor.

Everyone remembers the Mega Drive (or the Genesis as it was known in North America). Acting as Sega's competitor to Nintendo's SNES, the console was home to such classics as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Earthworm Jim.

Unlike some of the other hardware on this list, the console, which is manufactured by Chinese firm At Games, will play any original Mega Drive cartridges that you have lying around.

Don't worry if you've not got any old cartridges lying around though, since the console comes with 80 game pre-installed, including Mortal Kombat and Golden Axe.

Also unlike the original Mega Drive, the new console supports wireless controllers so you don't have to worry about the mess of controller cables that used to plague console gamers.

The console is available in a console and handheld configuration, which will both be available this October for $65/£49.99.

Whereas other consoles on this list consist of completely custom designed hardware, the Vectrex Regeneration is slightly different since it's first and foremost an iPad app.

Simply download the app onto an iPad, and such classics as Cosmic Chasm, Fortress of Narzod and...Solar Quest?

Ok we're less sold on the games, but if you combine the app with an iCade iPad housing things get a lot more interesting. Simply connect your iPad to the cabinet via bluetooth, slot it in place, and have fun playing games as they were originally intended with arcade controls in a box that closely resembles the form-factor of the original console.

The app itself is available for iOS for $2.99/£2.29, but unfortunately the iCade cabinet appears to be a little harder to come by Amazon US is selling the cabinet new for $195 and Amazon UK has them for £59.99.

It might not be as portable as other handhelds, but the SupaBoy gives you a SNES you can take on the go.

It even goes one better than the NES Classic Edition by accepting original SNES and Super Famicom cartridges.

Other than the 3.5-inch LCD screen, the SupaBoy is designed to look just like the original SNES pad, while the two front ports are compatible with SNES controllers if two of you fancy playing on it like a regular TV.

The length of the rechargeable battery seems to vary a bit, but you'll be looking at close to the four hour mark.

While the handheld's form factor seems convenient, it's unlikely to be of much use to anyone without some old SNES cartridges lying around. Since the SupaBoy is unlicensed, Hyperkin is unable to include any games as built-in software.

So it's appeal might be limited, but if you do happen to have a couple of cartridges lying around then you could do a lot worse than trying out the SupaBoy, which can be found on various auction sites for around $80 (£60).

The PlayStation Classic console is certainly fun, but we feel like it's missing a trick. Sony could’ve followed in Nintendo’s footsteps by releasing a populist's retro console, one that had the undisputed best games of the era like Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy 8 and 9 or Tomb Raider.

But that's not the PlayStation Classic.

It doesn’t include the majority of the console’s greatest hits and instead opts for some cult classics like Persona and Jumping Flash among a few well-received titles. Using Sony’s retro console is therefore a lot less like walking down memory lane, an experience we had with the SNES Classic and NES Classic Mini, and a lot more like a sample platter of what the PlayStation had to offer 20-some-odd years ago.

Of course, some people might develop a real attachment to games like Destruction Derby, Ridge Racer Type 4 and Intelligent Qube - and if that's you, then the PlayStation Classic is going to be everything you've ever wanted in a retro console.

If not, however, then you'll be disappointed with the game selection, unimpressed by the lackluster interface and forced to watch, often in horror, as late '90s FMVs are brought to life like Frankenstein's Monster on your 4K or 1080p TV.

Why the speed limiter on the 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is so helpful

In the future, cars won’t be so annoying about safety issues. If you've driven recent models, you'll know there are little warning flags that pop up about lane markings, traffic delays, and of course the dreaded speed alert. In some BMW models, the HUD will flash a little icon when you speed as a way to inform you about being an idiot. It even has a red flashing icon as though the car wants to give you a hint of what red flashing lights look like.

In a recent test of the 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, one safety feature worked a bit differently. It’s almost subversive – in a good way. In the menus, there’s a way to set a speed limit for the car, from 20mph up to something much more insane. I set the limit at 65mph, which is the posted speed in my area for many highways. (Note for those interested in this twin-turbo monster crossover: the speedometer actually goes all the way to 200mph.)

Now, Ford has offered speed limiting in their cars and trucks for years as part of the MyKey feature set. Designed in theory for teenagers, the idea is to set fairly strict guidelines for inexperienced drivers, such as disabling the radio unless you buckle up. I recall testing a speed limiting feature in a Ford truck once, and you simply can’t go any faster – the accelerator pushes back. My only issue is that MyKey is part of a suite of features for teens (mostly) and some of the menus and options can be a bit confusing... for the parents.

On the Stelvio, the speed limiter is just one setting. Once enabled, you set the speed limit and that’s it. There aren’t any other related features to worry about.

I liked that during multiple road trips, mostly because it works so well and also because the Stelvio wants to go fast. On one trip, I forgot all about the setting and start punching it a little. I didn’t see the nanny-minder slap on the wrist warning. The Stelvio just refused to go faster.

The speed of progress

That’s important as we enter an age of connected cars and automated driving. I prefer when the car thinks for me in situations where that is actually helpful and not annoying, such as limiting my speed if I’ve chosen to allow that. The difference here is critical. For starters, a warning doesn’t work. Our brains tune that out and we ignore it, at least until we realize the real flashing lights of a police car and a siren start whirring away behind us.

More importantly, though, is how distracted we can be when we drive. It’s all about the brain science – as humans, we tend to go into automatic mode when we drive. That’s awesome because we don’t have to think about the brake pedal anymore, we just use it by rote. One specific part of your brain controls those motor functions. It’s not as helpful though when we need to control our speed, not sway out of our lane, or there’s a stopped car on the road.

Some of the future-looking safety features like the speed limiter on the Stelvio are designed to act only when they are supposed to and won’t flash any icons in your face at all. As automakers develop more and more safety features, to an almost overwhelming extent, we’ll appreciate the ones that stay in the background and only do what they are designed to do.

You are out there in the market looking for a new laptop, the one that you can rely on when working on-the-go or relaxing after a day’s work with some old comedies. Truth be told, there aren't plenty out there which provide the perfect balance between power, portability and ease of use.

Enter HP Pavilion x360. The new HP Pavilion x360 14-dh0045tx is pretty lightweight, can be configured with upto latest 8th generation Intel Core i7 processors, supports touch response and has a great display. The brushed metal finish gives the laptop a premium look and feel.

Here are the 5 reasons why the new HP Pavilion x360 14-dh0045tx should be on your list.

1.Borderless immersive viewing experience

The new x360 range of laptops are fitted with a 14-inch IPS micro-edge display which results in 27.4% thinner top bezel and 12.3% reduction in left and right bezel sizes. The screen has a Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution and is anti-glare with support for pen and touch input. This gives the laptop over 80.9% screen-to-body ratio and all that screen estate to watch videos and movies on.

2. Thin and light

HP Pavilion x360 has been designed keeping in mind the people who work on-the-go. With portability, the laptop has a modern hourglass design which lets a user hold the lids firmly. This allows easier switching between laptop and tablet modes which comes in handy if you’re a designer who needs to draw on the screen.

3. Creatively artful

If you’re a designer and looking for an affordable laptop which has the ability to let you create artworks, the Pavilion x360 is just what you are looking for. The laptop supports simultaneous pen and touch inputs, so one can easily sketch with the bundled HP Active Pen and control the remaining tools with the other hand.

The HP Active Pen can help users design, illustrate and sketch from the comfort of a single screen. It also supports Windows Inking feature which provides an Ink Workspace on the Pavilion x360 to users for them to play around with the digital pen.

4. Packs a punch

HP Pavilion x360 14 offers the perfect balance between work and play as it can be configured with upto 8th gen. Intel Core i7 processors and upto 2GB NVIDIA GeForce MX250 graphics for smooth editing and casual gaming. So, if you work on Adobe Premiere Pro and play PUBG on the side, this one machine has got it covered.

There’s a fingerprint reader on the keyboard dock which let users quickly sign into the laptop. This comes in handy especially if you forget your password or pin. And with Microsoft’s OS onboard, it also supports Windows Hello which lets a user quickly sign-in to the laptop and into supported apps and websites very securely.

5. Speedier and responsive

The new x360 convertible has a 512GB M.2 SSD paired with 16GB RAM, ensuring blazing fast performance. It comes fitted with HP’s Precision Touchpad which can be configured for sensitivity, scroll/zoom, tapping, gestures and volume controls.

The touchpad supports one-finger tap and drag to select, two-finger pinch to zoom in/out, three-finger swipe-up to execute task view and four fingers swipe to switch desktops.

ssHP’s new Pavilion x360 14-dh0045tx looks modern, feels premium in the hand and is powerful enough to back you up in your daily tasks. The HP Active Pen gives a second dimension to the convertible laptop, encouraging budding creators to widen their horizon. It is totally worth the price!

Epic Games Store snatches up eight exclusive indie games

Epic Games Store has announced that eight new indie games will be available exclusively on its store. The games were announced as part of a PAX West 2019 Showcase, and include highly anticipated titles such as Ooblets and Wattam.

The announcement that these indie games will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store continues the company’s strategy of nabbing exclusive rights in a bid to win over customers from rival stores such as Steam.

Epic Games Store’s habit of making games exclusive has been rather controversial in the past, with some games, such as Metro Exodus, being made exclusive to the Epic Games Store even after preorders had been taken on rival stores.

The games

So, which have been announced as exclusive to Epic Games Store?

Ooblets

Ooblets is a cute looking farming game that encourages players to farm, grow and train ooblets, as well as explore the world of Oob and take on other trainers in dance battles.

The creators of Ooblets announced Epic Games Store exclusivity earlier this year, and unfortunately the announcement was met with a lot of hostility.

Hopefully things have calmed down a bit now, and the announcement of yet more Epic Games Store exclusives won’t trigger the same level of anger.

No Straight Roads

In No Straight Roads, which is also available on PS4, you play as an indie rock band that combines visuals and audio to create a truly unique game. Directed by Wan Hazmer, lead game designer of Final Fantasy XV, and Daim Dziauddin, concept artist of Street Fighter V, it looks set to do something really different.

Manifold Garden

Manifold Garden is an indie first-person puzzle game that wants to “reimagine physics” and “explore the Infinite”, which are certainly lofty goals.

Strongly influenced by the dimension-bending works of MC Escher, this looks set to be a visually stunning game when it launches.

Superliminal

Superliminal is a mind-bending game based on optical illusions. It’s an inventive debut from Pillow Castle Games, and we’re excited to try it out to see if it lives up to its potential.

Wattam

From the mind of Keita Takahashi (creator of cult games Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy), Wattam looks just as nuts – and adorable – as Takahashi’s previous creations, focusing on the joys of friendship and discovery. This could be very special indeed.

The Alto Collection

Combining Alto’s Adventure and Alto’s Odyssey, The Alto Collection brings the popular mobile games to PC, with gorgeous graphics and addictive snowboarding gameplay.

Airborne Kingdom

Blending citry management and exploration, Airborne Kingdom looks like it could be a cyberpunk SimCity. That though alone makes us very excited to get our hands on this game.

The Eternal Cylinder

The Eternal Cylinder looks set to do something completely new with the popular survival genre, with players controlling a herd of alien Trebhums as they explore a strange new world.

Exclusive for how long?

As we touched on earlier, Epic Games Store’s practice of making anticipated PC games exclusive has been rather controversial. However, many of these games will only be exclusive to the Epic Games Store for a set amount of time.

The developer of Manifold Garden, William Chyr, has tweeted that the game will be exclusive to Epic Games Store for 12 months.

Epic has been almost ruthless in its bid to win over Steam customers, and has been encouraging developers to make their games exclusive to the Epic Games Store by not just paying for exclusivity, but also offering the developers a generous 88% of the revenue from the sales of their games – a much larger share of the profits compared to what Valve offers with games sold on Steam.

Still, there are gamers out there who are not happy with being forced to buy their games from the Epic Games Store, as many argue that Epic’s store (which is still in its infancy compared to some of its more established rivals) lacks the features of its competitors.

However, there’s an argument to be had that Epic’s money is helping to bring these indie games to market by offering financial security to the developers — something that developing indie games cannot always guarantee.

Fresh Nikon D6 rumors surface

Is Nikon about to confirm the development of a Nikon D6 DSLR? It's been rumoured for some time – and it seems the company may be set to make things official very soon.

Camera-leaking website Nokishita, which has proven itself to be fairly reliable in breaking news of upcoming products, claims on its Twitter account that Nikon will be confirming the model's development on September 4.

That leaves plenty of time to get the camera out onto the market ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games that begin in July.

Like its rival Canon, Nikon may now be focusing much of its attention on getting its new mirrorless system off the ground, but sports photographers with a collection of telephoto lenses are still likely to be better served by a model such as the D5 (pictured above) or a potential D6.

The D5 was introduced at the start of 2016, and has been adopted by many sports and press photographers since then. Announced alongside the D500, the pair were the first models to bring 4K video to the Nikon DSLR line, along with a 153-point AF system.

Nikon has released many DSLRs since then, such as the full-frame D850, APS-C-based D7500 and the most recent entry-level D3500, in addition to bringing out its Z system of mirrorless cameras and lenses.

Sensor-based image stabilization?

So what could a D6 model feature? Based on the specs of previous models at this level, we expect existing functionality to be upgraded rather than anything that really breaks from the pro DSLR template.

That means a newer sensor with a slightly higher resolution, together with more advanced autofocusing, a wider sensitivity range and faster burst shooting. It's also likely that the model would sport stronger 4K video specs than the D5.

Nikon Rumors had previously stated that a source had mentioned that the new model would be fitted with a 24MP sensor, together with 4K video to 60p and sensor-based image stabilization. The latter feature would be very welcome given its absence from previous Nikon DSLRs – and the fact that Nikon's full-frame mirrorless models now sport this gives such a rumor more credibility.
