Misfit creators branch off to measure once, cut once with InstruMMents 01

Rulers are outdated. Multi-laser systems are overrated. Perhaps it’s about time that someone made something to measure with that didn’t involve paces, whirly wheels or a thousand bubble levels.

If you’re a person who wants to measure once and cut once, then John Sculley, of Apple, PepsiCo and Misfit leadership, and Mladen Barbaric, founder of design firm Pearl Studio in Montreal, have something for you in a new venture called InstruMMents. Its first products is an aluminum and steel pen called the 01.

Any one pen can roll over or scan across surfaces of any gradient and take in dimensions with its six-axis gyroscope as well as a laser, too. The 01 connects wirelessly to your iPhone or Android device where an app logs all the information. Yes, you can write with this thing as well.

The 01 comes in three versions: one with ink, one with pencil graphite (both refillable) and one as a passive stylus. The battery isn’t rechargeable, but it should last between four and six months before needing to be replaced.

The product will go on sale at InstruMMents website, IndieGoGo and select retail shops starting December 1 for $149. The first 20,000 orders get a complimentary Saffiano leather sleeve, a $29 value. Each 01 can also be engraved with your signature.
