ASUS has today announced that its next flagship – the Zenfone 8 – will break cover on May 12, most likely via a virtual launch event. If the company’s 2020 flagship strategy is anything to go by, we might get two devices – the vanilla Zenfone 8 and a pricier Zenfone 8 Pro model. But lately, we’ve been hearing a lot of chatter about a compact device that will likely debut as the Zenfone 8 Mini. The ‘Big on Performance, Compact in Size’ phrase on the official website only adds more fuel to these rumors.

A Zenfone 8 Mini with no compromises in terms of raw firepower? Yes, please!

Now, ASUS has not revealed any official information about the Zenfone 8 series yet. But going by the usual Android flagship playback for 2021, expect the upcoming phones to rock Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 888 SoC ticking alongside plenty of RAM. It would be interesting to see whether ASUS continues with the flipping camera module design that was introduced with the Zenfone 6 back in 2019.

Interestingly, the official Google ARCore support database also namedropped a device called ASUS Zenfone Flip. At this point in time, it is unclear if the ‘Flip’ here refers to the 180-degree flip camera module or if it’s a foldable flip phone similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The folks over at XDA-Developers also discovered details of an upcoming phone codenamed ‘PICASSO’ that features a 6.67-inch display and four cameras (64MP + 12.2MP + 24MP + 8MP telephoto lens).

ASUS Zenfone 8 Flip is also in the pipeline. A foldable maybe?

Back in February, DigiTimes reported that ASUS will launch a Zenfone Mini later this year. The report mentioned that ASUS won’t make any compromises for its compact phone when it comes to the internal hardware, following a strategy similar to what Apple did with the iPhone 12 Mini. Alleged Geekbench listing suggests that the ASUS Zenfone 8 Mini will draw power from the Snapdragon 888 SoC paired with up to 16 gigs of RAM. Rumors also point towards a 5.92-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and support for 30W fast charging.

ASUS Zenfone 8 Mini appears on Geekbench ahead of launch

ASUS is tipped to be working on an iPhone 12 mini competitor. It is reportedly making a compact flagship, much like what Apple did with its mini flagship last year.   Moreover, details of the alleged ASUS Zenfone 8 Mini were recently leaked. Plus, it appeared on TÜV SÜD certification, which gave us a look at the offering in terms of charging capabilities. Now, the smartphone has been spotted on Geekbench, which reiterates several rumored specifications of the upcoming smartphone.

The ASUS ZenFone 8 Mini’s model number is ASUS_I006D / ASUS_ZS590KS as per several past reports. The smartphone has appeared with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC on Geekbench. This reveals that ASUS is planning an outright flagship in a compact footprint. In the listing, the SoC is mentioned with ‘lahaina’ and a 1.80GHz base frequency. As for the scores, the smartphone got 1121 and 3662 in the single-core and multi-core tests of Geekbench, respectively. Moreover, the listing reveals that it will come equipped with 16GB of RAM. There could be more RAM configurations available at launch.

There were references to the ASUS ZenFone 8 Mini and ASUS ZenFone 8 Flip in the ASUS PixelMaster Camera app. Later, it was revealed that the “Flip” and “Mini” could be the same phone. As per previous reports, the ASUS Zenfone 8 Mini could feature a 5.92-inch OLED display, which will make it one of the most compact Android flagships on the market. It is tipped to have support for a 120Hz refresh rate and full HD+ (2400×1080) resolution. Further, the device is rumored to have two image sensors: a 64MP Sony IMX686 and a new Sony IMX663. The smartphone could have support for 30W fast charging.

For reference, the smallest Android flagship available in the market right now is the Samsung Galaxy S21, which features a 6.2-inch display.

ASUS Zenfone 8 Mini inches closer to launch

ASUS is reportedly making a compact flagship, much like what Apple did with the iPhone 12 mini. While many appreciated a smaller footprint with a flagship processor, the sales figure didn’t reach the targets set by Apple. That said, an Android manufacturer is boarding the “mini” train. Details regarding the alleged ASUS Zenfone 8 Mini were recently leaked. Now, the smartphone has reportedly bragged a certification, which hints that the device is inching closer to launch.

The ASUS Zenfone 8 Mini has reportedly received TÜV SÜD certification. While it doesn’t reveal much about the upcoming mini flagship, it does give a look at the offering in terms of charging capabilities. The Zenfone 8 Mini could have support for 30W fast charging. The information comes from a screenshot shared by tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore on Twitter. It reveals that the ASUS_I006D/DA is equipped with support for 30W rapid charging. The device is likely the upcoming mini flagship.

As per a previous report, references to the ASUS ZenFone 8 and ASUS ZenFone 8 Flip were found in the latest version of the ASUS PixelMaster Camera app. However, it was reported that the “Flip” and “Mini” could be the same phone. The device is said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. It might have a 5.92-inch OLED display. It could have support for a 120Hz refresh rate and full HD+ (2400×1080) resolution. Moreover, it is tipped to have only two image sensors: a 64MP Sony IMX686 and a new Sony IMX663.

As of now, the smallest flagship Android phone we have is the Samsung Galaxy S21, which features a 6.2-inch display. While it is interesting that an Android manufacturer is working on a mini flagship in 2021, the size could lead to disappointing battery life. The iPhone 12 mini, for instance, lasts lesser (on a single charge) than the vanilla iPhone 12.

Like the iPhone 12 mini size but prefer Android? ASUS is making a phone for you

Apple made a compact flagship last year with the iPhone 12 mini. While many appreciated a smaller flagship, the sales figure didn’t reach the targets set by Apple. However, it seems like Android manufacturers are all set to board the “mini” train. It was recently rumored that ASUS was working on a ‘mini’ variant of its next ZenFone flagship, which could be named ASUS ZenFone 8 Mini. Now, more details regarding the device have appeared online.

The folks over at XDA-Developers have revealed some of the specifications of the upcoming ‘mini’ ASUS phone. The publication says that they found references to the ASUS ZenFone 8 and ASUS ZenFone 8 Flip in the latest version of the ASUS PixelMaster Camera app. And, the “Flip” and “Mini” could be the same phone. All of these devices will be based on Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 mobile platform, according to the kernel source code.

The ASUS ZenFone 8 series has three phones with codenames “SAKE”, “PICASSO”, and “VODKA”. The “SAKE” could turn out to be the ASUS ZenFone 8 ‘Mini’ since it is defined as a 5.92-inch OLED display, and is referred to as a “small phone” in ASUS’s software. Moreover, leaked features from the configuration file suggest the presence of a 120Hz refresh rate and full HD+ (2400×1080) resolution. According to the report, the smartphone might come with only two image sensors: a 64MP Sony IMX686 and a new Sony IMX663.

It would be interesting to see an Android manufacturer other than Sony attempting a compact flagship. As of now, the smallest flagship Android phone we have is the Samsung Galaxy S21, which features a 6.2-inch display. However, a ‘mini’ form factor could lead to a disappointing battery life. The iPhone 12 mini, for instance, lasts lesser (on a single charge) than the vanilla iPhone 12. That being said, a ‘mini’ flagship smartphone is something to curiously look forward to.
