iPhone surpassed the Samsung Galaxy line-up in sales last quarter

Apple’s results last quarter have proven to shock more than few of us. Just recently we learned that the iPad actually gained global marketshare for the first time in a while last quarter, which is extremely difficult in a world full of $200 tablets. Now it seems that even the iPhone broke some records in sales last quarter when compared to its direct competition. Two quarters ago, Samsung’s 38% of US smartphone market share had surpassed Apple’s 34%, something which proved to be ...

Apple sold more than Samsung in the US during the holidays

There’s no denying that Samsung dominates the mobile space around the world, but the company hasn’t really had that same consistent luck in beating Apple in the US. Samsung has sold more Galaxy phones than Apple has sold iPhones on more than one quarter, but it seems that doing so during the past holiday season wasn’t possible. Counterpoint Research just shared its numbers and Apple’s iPhone sales grew from 31% to a staggering 43% during the month of December. Samsung on the other hand actually lost marketshare, going from a 34% to just 30% during the same month. ...

Bloat watch: which smartphones ship with the least available free space?

Every so often, we get to talking about how much storage is available on our phones out of the box – and not the 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB on the spec flyer, but how much is actually free for us to use, after system software, OEM add-ons, and all that pre-installed bloat is accounted for. The thing is, we only pay a lot of attention to it after we first notice it’s a problem – like how Microsoft found itself in hot water when Surface RT owners noticed their “32GB” tablets only having 16GB free. What we ...

Samsung Galaxy S 4 KitKat test build leaks; no big UI overhaul yet

Back in November, we saw a leaked document that indicated Samsung’s plans to begin with distribution of an Android 4.4 KitKat update for its Galaxy S 4 flagship sometime this month, in January. It remains to be seen if the company is going to meet that schedule, or if things have (all too likely) slid back a little, but today we get a little bit of a preview of what to expect, with the leak of a pre-release GS4 KitKat update. The interesting part, however, may not be what we see present, but what we ...

G Flex vs Galaxy S 4 (Video)

LG’s G Flex broke the bounds of normality in search of a form factor and device which is more resilient, ergonomic, and beneficial to the user. The G Flex is a compelling product and a step in the right direction which, hopefully, will encourage other manufacturers to solve real problems. Samsung also attempted to solve long-standing problems with its Galaxy S 4 through software innovations, and it has since become ...

Nokia makes lemonade out of Samsung’s lemons with great PR move

Remember back in October when we told you about the story of the filmmaker whom Apple ripped-off when the company co-opted his video for internal uses without compensation or credit? It caught our attention when we saw Nokia interject itself into the matter, hooking the filmmaker up with a brand new Lumia 1020 with the hopes that he might take advantage of it for future video projects. Sure, the whole thing had nothing to do with Nokia to begin with, but the company saw a great opportunity to get itself some good PR while ...

At first, that meant devices like the GS4 Zoom, Mini, and Active, but later we saw Samsung’s attention turn to the chipset powering the GS4 itself, upgrading from the Snapdragon 600 at the heart of many LTE editions of the Galaxy S 4 to a ...
