White House Historical Association releases 1600, an AR touring app

If you would like to tour around the building where the executive branch of the US government does its most important work, there’s a lot of hassle involved in getting down to Washington, D.C., and making the proper guiding arrangements.

But if you have an iOS or Android device and a $1 bill, you’ll be able to get a new take on how the White House came to be and what purpose it serves with the new “1600” app.

The app is a collaboration with the White House Historical Association, the White House and Nexus Studios out of the UK. It features an animated, augmented reality sequence where the White House suddenly rises out of George Washington’s face — he was the only president not to have lived there, though he did order the facilities built during his presidency. The narration behind the story goes on about how the White House is “the People’s House.”

The app is free to download, though you do need the $1 bill to trigger the experience.

The evolution of the smartphone

Smartphones are commonplace today. Almost everyone has one. My grandmother carries an iPhone and my father – a man who once swore he’d never carry a phone with him anywhere – slaps a Samsung Galaxy S III with an OtterBox case on his hip every morning. It wasn’t always so. I remember being the only person at my high school – teachers and administration included – with a smartphone. First, I had the Moto Q, then the BlackBerry Pearl 8130, followed by the Curve 8330. And that’s where

This week in mobile history: Windows 95 on iOS, PureView comparisons, and eFuse controversy

The mobile world moves quickly – probably faster than just about any other industry in the world.New devices are announced on what feels like a weekly basis; perpetual software updates are hitting for the hundreds of mobile devices; one-off press events are always happening; and while phones seem to have a longer life span than they did back in, say 2010, they still become antiques in what feels like no time.Back in September, I went on a nostalgia binge and did a throwback review for one of my favorite mobile devices of all time: the BlackBerry Curve 8330. Looking back, it’s crazy ...

Looking back, it’s crazy to see how far the industry has come in less than a decade – from phones that (barely) handled email to pocket-sized computers that a increasingly ...
