OPPO’s AirTags rival leaks with support for UWB and USB-C charging

Apple unveiled its long-rumored AirTag object tracker at the Spring Loaded event earlier this week. The device goes up against Tile and Samsung but you’ll need an iPhone or iPad to configure it. While the iOS space has gotten its object tracker, the options in Android segment are limited with Samsung being the latest entrant. Now, it looks like OPPO is developing an object tracker as well. The company could join the likes of Samsung and Apple with its Smart Tag that has been leaked online.

OPPO-smart-tag-live-leak

The latest development comes from leaker Digital Chat Station who took to Weibo to post images of what he claims to be the Engineering Test version of the upcoming OPPO Smart Tag. The device looks small and appears to have a white paintjob. Moreover, the upcoming object tracker could have ‘Ultra Wide Band’ support like the AirTag.

Plus, the OPPO device looks to be more environment-friendly than the rivals with support for a USB Type-C port at the bottom. This is absent on both Apple and Samsung’s offerings like the AirTag and Galaxy SmartTag / SmartTag+, respectively. Therefore, the OPPO Smart Tag could come with a rechargeable battery.

For the unaware, the rivals promise a 1-year battery life on their respective object trackers but you cannot recharge them. Although, you can replace the CR2032 battery on Apple AirTag. However, a rechargeable one might be a more convenient option. On the other hand, we’ll have to see if the OPPO Smart Tag comes with any kind of IP rating to protect it from dust and water.

Coming back the the UWB feature, it essentially allows the users to track the location of tags, and help you with directions better than the Bluetooth-only version. As for the design, it looks like AirTag and doesn’t seem to have a hole like that on the Galaxy SmartTag.

OPPO starts rolling out iPhone support for Watch and Band Style with HeyTap Health app

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

OPPO is expanding its ecosystem with wearables and audio product launches alongside its smartphones. The company has cemented its place in the audio segment with the budget Enco M31 and the more-affordable-than-AirPods Enco X. Plus, its OPPO Watch is one of the best Android Wear smartwatches you can buy in the market at an affordable price point. However, these products have been limited to Android with no support for iPhones. It is changing now.

OPPO has started rolling out its HeyTap Health app for the iOS platform. The app allows you to pair the OPPO Watch or the Band Style with an iPhone. You can use the app to adjust the settings as well as synchronize the data and view them on your iPhone now. Moreover, they can also synchronize the information with Apple‘s own Health after authorization.

For reference, prior to this, the OPPO Watch had the option of synchronizing the data of the smartwatch with Android and iOS devices using Google’s Wear OS application as it runs Wear OS. Now, it can also sync with the iPhone using OPPO’s own HeyTap Health app.

That being said, the HeyTap app for audio devices has not been rolled out still. It can be used to pair one of the best affordable TWS earphones – OPPO Enco X with Android devices. Unfortunately, iPhone users will have to wait for an AirPods alternative at a budget. While the earbuds do connect with the Apple devices, you don’t get the app to customize things like gestures. Notably, you get LHDC and AAC codecs and miss out on aptX. But you don’t miss out on the sound quality. As we said in our OPPO Enco X review, the earbuds offer a fantastic sound with a segment-leading ANC.

OPPO and Vivo foldables could be around the corner

Xiaomi recently launched its first foldable device – the Mi Mix Fold in China. It is an inward-folding phone like the Galaxy Z Fold series. Now, it is being tipped that foldables from OPPO and Vivo could be launched soon. It is rumored that foldable displays for upcoming smartphones from both these companies are nearing mass production.

The latest development comes from tipster Digital Chat Station (translated) through Weibo. They revealed that there are two versions being worked on. One of them is an 8-inch flexible display while the other is a 7-inch display. Both of these are inward folding panels, just like the Mi Mix Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 2. The 7-inch display is said to already have a prototype as it is closer to mass productions. It is tipped that its production has been delayed from January this year.

According to the tipster, the Vivo foldable will have an impressive hinge design for its 8-inch flexible screen. Moreover, when folded, it will offer a 6.5-inch display. However, a specific time frame for commercial launch has yet to be confirmed.

It was earlier rumored that an OPPO foldable will be launching in June this year. As per the previous report, OPPO is expected to introduce its first foldable smartphone in Q2, which starts in April and ends in June. The manufacturer has already showcased a rollable smartphone last year.

The rollable phone is called OPPO X and it features a flexible OLED display that measures 6.7-inch. It can be rolled out via a dynamic scrolling frame to give you 7.4-inches of screen real estate. Further, the display is unrolled by using a side button on which you have to swipe to extend and retract the flexible panel. However, the upcoming phone is not rollable, and the showcased device isn’t coming anytime soon.

OPPO Find X3 Pro gets a vegan leather variant but it is limited to China

When OPPO unveiled the Find X3 Pro earlier this month, the first thing people noticed was the glossy back. The smartphone ditched the leather finish found on the predecessor in favor of a mirror finish. Many reviewers noted how OPPO should bring a vegan leather variant to the market. Now, OPPO has finally launched one! However, you won’t be able to buy it yet since it is limited to China.

The OPPO Find X3 Pro is receiving a new color variant, which is named Cosmic Mocha. It comes with a light gold allure frame that coincides with the camera island design on the back, with a vegan leather exterior. Further, the signature Oppo logo sits at the bottom right of the back – crusted on the vegan leather finish. This is the fourth color variant of the Pro model. It is priced at RMB 5,999 (around $915).

The OPPO flagship features a 6.7-inch QHD+ (3216 x 1440 pixels) HDR 10+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1300 nits of peak brightness. It recently gained support for adaptive refresh rate that allows it to reduce its power consumption by 50 percent. It can go as low as 1Hz and as high as 120Hz. Under the hood lies the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC that is paired with 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of onboard storage. It packs a 4,500mAh battery with support for proprietary 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 Flash Charge technology that promises up to 40% juice with just 10 minutes of charging.

On the optics front, you get a quad-camera setup that is highlighted by a 50MP main camera with Sony IMX776 sensor, backed by OIS and an f/1.8 lens. It is accompanied by a 50MP wide-angle camera that also employs the same Sony sensor. It offers 110-degree field of view. Then there’s a 13MP telephoto camera on the phone offers up to 5x hybrid optical and 20x digital zoom. Plus, you get a 3MP macro lens that is claimed to offer up to 60x magnification.

OPPO Find X3 Pro gets adaptive refresh rate of 1Hz-120Hz with an update

Within a few days of launch, OPPO has started rolling out a new update for its new flagship. The Find X3 Pro is receiving an update that brings an adaptive refresh rate of between 1Hz and 120Hz. It seems similar to what OnePlus has announced to offer with the OnePlus 9 Pro. OPPO says that its smartphone is designed to recognise which app is running on the system to accordingly adjust screen’s refresh rate. While Xiaomi and Samsung also offer adaptive refresh rate on their flagships, none can go as low as 1Hz.

The latest development comes from Weibo where OPPO announced the new update. It said that the new adaptive refresh rate update on the Find X3 Pro is aimed at reducing power consumption by 50 percent. The new feature allows the phone to adjust refresh rate according to the apps being used on the phone to provide optimised results.

For instance, if you are watching a movie, the refresh rate will be between 24Hz and 60Hz. If you are scrolling, the screen will move at 120Hz However, if you are using an e-reader app or looking at some of your photos the Find X3 Pro refresh rate will drop down to 1Hz. The slower the refresh rate, the less power the display consumes.

On the other hand, the OnePlus 9 Pro will also support an adaptive refresh rate that will allow the screen to go as low as 1Hz. OnePlus is calling its new form of OLED display “Fluid Display 2.0.” It will be a combination of Samsung’s OLED panel and a bunch of exclusive OnePlus software optimizations and tunings. The low refresh rate will allow OnePlus 9 Pro to consume less power when the screen is sitting idle. The Find X3 Pro refresh rate seems to work the same way.

OPPO Find X3 Pro review: the wow got conventional (video)

Anton D. Nagy contributed to this post.

For the longest time, the OPPO Find lineup has been more about Finding innovation than restraint. The Find 7 wowed many of us with its specs and QuadHD display for the time. The Find X was… Well, crazy. It took the design and motorized cameras more seriously than any other, and then the Find X2 Pro didn’t just go Periscopic but also taught the new kids how to do it in a compact body. There’s never been anything conventional about them, so of course, it creates this sort of expectation of another vanguard phone for 2021.

Well, this is the Find X3 Pro, what OPPO dubs as the Billion Color phone, and what I’m gonna call one of the sleekest, best-looking phones of the year so far, but not necessarily what I’d call a successor to what made the brand popular. So yeah, it’s not crazy, there’s no wow factor, but if refinement was the intent, there’s a lot of that here. This is our OPPO Find X3 Pro review.

You know, I saw the leaks, and sure, I also thought it looked a lot like an iPhone, but I think that’s a huge oversimplification. See, usually, smartphones in this category are large and chunky just to fit all their hardware, but this is probably the thinnest and lightest flagship I’ve tried yet.

Hardware

To provide some context, it’s just 193 grams, making it around 35 to 36 grams lighter than the 12 Pro Max and S21 Ultra respectively. It’s also just 8.2mm thick, leaving the Ultra trailing behind at 8.9, though the 7.4mm on iPhone is hard to catch up with. I don’t usually make a big deal about these things, but because the body is narrower than average, somehow the weight distribution makes this phone feel almost hollow and effortless to use.

OPPO Find X3 Pro review

Now, it does seem like if 2021 is the year of the contour camera, but this is a very different approach. There’s a whole scientific explanation into how it takes 40 hours and more than 100 processes to create this kind of a curve, and I like it. It’s more cohesive and helps prevent lint from being stuck in the corners. If anything I’d say the curves make the hump look larger than it is because it doesn’t really protrude much. It is elegant, I’ll give you that, but that’s so long as you can keep it clean. I might recommend you try the Blue option cause this Gloss Black color doesn’t do so well in that department. Also, I don’t have a specific rating for the back, but I do know the front is Gorilla Glass 5.

Now the whole claim for the Billion Colors starts with this display. Last year’s Find X2 Pro was my favorite display on a phone, edging out every competitor in contrast ratio, and the legacy continues. This is a stunning 6.7-inch Quad HD OLED capable of 10-bit color, 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, HDR10+, 1,300 nits of brightness, and the same 5 million to 1 contrast ratio from last year. Colors, brightness, and viewing angles are seriously fantastic, and because it’s LTPO, you also have a variable refresh rate between 5 and 120hz at more power efficiency, and 240hz touch sampling. Match this with tiny and symmetrical bezels allowing for 92.7% of screen to body ratio, and a good pair of dual firing speakers, and yeah, content consumption is great. There’s also a very fast but not as reliable face to unlock through the punch hole, and an optical fingerprint scanner at the very bottom of the display to unlock it easier while wearing a mask.

OPPO Find X3 Pro review

Internals are also that of your typical high-end flagship, with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, 12 gigs of RAM, 256 gigs of non-expandable storage, Dual-SIM 5G that supports all flavors, the latest Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a large 4,500 mAh battery, VOOC rapid charging up to 65 watts and yes it comes in the box. Finally, some wireless charging up to 30 watts if you have AirVOOC which is optional, it’s reversible up to 10 watts, and yeah, IP68 water and dust resistance are in tow.

Software and Experience

This is Color OS 11.2 running on top of Android 11, which sure is not stock Android, but not really far from it. The UI elements are still mostly OPPO, but the more you use it, the more you realize just how much Google-ified it is. You have the Google feed to the left of the launcher, there’s an option to call on the Google Assistant from the power button, and you can also set an app tray if that’s your jam. Other features are actually welcomed, like using your fingerprint to unlock your Private Safe or specific apps, in addition to calling on shortcuts with a gesture. A side menu for quick shortcuts, and other enhancements like Game Space and OPPO Relax 2.0.

OPPO Find X3 Pro review

Really all you care about is that the UI doesn’t bog down the experience, and that’s the case here. Apps launch fast, animations are minor so it all feels smooth, and as a result, I feel battery life is pretty good. After a week of testing on Google Fi, I’ve been able to end my days with enough of a charge left, no overheating, though even with all the 5G antennas included, I can’t say I ever got 5G to work. Fi is still finicky about the phones it supports with it, even leaving iPhones off the list, so I’ll attribute that to my problem.

Camera

Now let’s talk cameras for a bit, cause that’s another reason for the Billion Color tagline. OPPO and Sony co-engineered a new 50-megapixel IMX766 sensor that’s capable of 10-bit color, but this is actually the first phone to include two of them. One for the primary camera, and the other for the ultra-wide. This makes a lot of sense cause if you think about it, in a mirror-less camera you can change lenses to provide different focal lengths, but image quality is never affected cause the sensor doesn’t. I wish that were the case with the telephoto, which took a step back from being periscopic. I’ll let the results do the talking, and we’ll discuss that fourth camera in a bit.

OPPO Find X3 Pro review

At first, I thought they just looked great because the display made them look good, but once you pull them into a computer, the results remain consistent. As expected daylight photos are great, but OPPO is playing with a bit more contrast in its color science, creating this sort of Leica grain that I’m really liking. It makes colors like red look bolder and more elegant. It plays in its favor mostly when switching focal lengths since you’re losing aperture on the other cameras, so the grain sort of compensates for the loss in detail in the shadows. Having the same sensor in the Ultra-wide leads to color consistency, and even if there’s one less element on the lens, there is nearly no distortion on the sides. And sure, we lost the periscopic zoom lens, but I’d say photos even up to 5X hybrid are really good, though I do suggest you stay away from 20X digital.

In low light, I’d say this phone performs better than most. These would be the only ultra-wide photos I’d recommend at night, providing results that are almost on-par with the Primary. Obviously the darker it gets the harder it is given the differences in aperture, but I’m very impressed overall. It’s not until you jump to the telephoto that things start falling apart, but it’s the story with every other phone.

OPPO Find X3 Pro review

Oddly, I’m a fan of selfies, but not of selfie portraits. Somehow the latter needs some serious tuning as all dynamic range is blown off, something every other competing phone solved generations ago.

And sadly, it’s the same way I feel about the video. I mean, the back camera can go up to 4K at 60 providing some decent results with good stabilization and colors, but I’m gonna apologize right now for the selfie video footage. No stabilization, pretty regular dynamic range, and it’s still stuck at 1080p, which again is something that competitors addressed ages ago.

OPPO Find X3 Pro review

As for camera number 4, well this is a Microlens that allows up to 60x magnification and even records Full HD video of, well, the weave that makes up my mouse pad. It uses a circular ring light to help you get really close to your subject, but aside from learning that my hankies were not really 100% cotton, this is more of a gimmick given the low resolution of the results.

OPPO Find X3 Pro review conclusion

To conclude our OPPO Find X3 Pro review, I think the best way to summarize the OPPO Find X3 Pro is by calling it the most mature flagship in this lineup. I mean sure the wow factor is gone, but I think it was done on purpose. During our briefing, we asked why features like the periscopic lens were taken away, and the engineers claimed that users didn’t use it as much as the primary or the ultra-wide. It kind of makes sense for the complexity to be removed if it’s an extra value that’s under-utilized.

Because of its great design, superb display, a great set of cameras,
and excellent battery life,
the OPPO Find X3 Pro is our choice
for a great overall flagship smartphone.

Maybe the reason why I disagree with that approach is that I feel the industry needs phones like the ones this lineup used to stand for. Not all features will stick around for an extra year or two, but the only way to live in the future is through experimentation. If it wasn’t for those motorized cameras or periscopic lenses, I don’t think other manufacturers would’ve adopted the technology. It’s proof that OPPO was actually delivering on useful ideas and not the usual gimmicks we get from other manufacturers.

Regardless, if I were to judge the Find X3 Pro as a flagship, it’s a great phone. From the look and feel of the hardware to the experience with the software, it’s a joy to use. If photography is your thing, it’s one of the best phones on my list, even if I wish all my needs for video were addressed. Sure, I was expecting a bit more than just another flagship with this phone, but that doesn’t deter me from the fact that I have no problem recommending it.

OPPO might mark its entry in the tablet segment in 2021

It was reported late last year the OPPO could mark its entry in the tablet and notebook segment. Now, new details regarding its tablet have surfaced online. There is a wide space open in the Android tablet world. While Apple leads the segment with iPads, there are Samsung, Huawei, Honor, and Lenovo in the Android space. We could use some more competition, which would likely benefit the end consumer.

The latest development comes from a report by the Chinese publication, ITHome. As per the report, insiders have revealed that OPPO is already in talks with suppliers for its first tablet. It didn’t reveal any names. Hence, we do not know who OPPO’s partners are for the components. While not much is known about the upcoming OPPO tablet, it is likely to run Android. Hence, it would compete with the likes of Samsung, Huawei, Honor, and Lenovo which are the major players in the segment.

While the tablet market was facing a decline a few years ago, it picked up momentum in the pandemic during 2020, which introduced more work from home and online studies. It forced schools to close and students to learn virtually. Hence, OPPO might be looking at it as an opportunity to debut a tablet.

The company is also rumored to be prepping to launch its first foldable smartphone. However, the upcoming phone is not rollable, and the showcased device isn’t coming anytime soon. For the unaware, the 6.7-inch prototype was showcased to roll out via a dynamic scrolling frame, and you get 7.4-inches of screen real estate. You could simply swipe the side button to extend and retract the flexible panel. That being said, it isn’t coming anytime soon. Hence, we expect OPPO to be making a Huawei Mate X series and Galaxy Z Fold 2-like foldable smartphone. However, it remains to be seen if it will be announced before or after OPPO’s tablet.
