Could a Galaxy Note 8 dual-boot Android and Windows simultaneously?

Samsung has a vision of a smartphone that primarily runs Android, but can also run Windows 10 Mobile if it wanted to. Yep, no longer just restrained to a tablet that never got released, the chaebol went to Korean patent agency Kipris to have its regulators look over such a phone.

Finally. You can also quick switchFrom the outset, the biggest development we’ve been talking about for N is the Split Screen feature. Android N multi-window support docs tease free-floating “freeform” mode

Modern smartphones sure manage to stand their own against traditional computers, armed as they are with incredibly powerful hardware, as well as buckets of software, but there’s at least one area where the old-fashioned PC has continued to outdo them: multitasking. Even with increasingly deep pools of RAM making it easier to have more software in memory at once, tasks that require users to interact with multiple apps in quick succession can prove to be exercises in frustration – and a good ...

Pixel C discount for developers looking for Android N tinkering

When manufacturers churn up specific models of their devices for developers to tinker with, — by the way, that seems a bit long ago — the latter end up paying like the rest of us, if not a little bit more. If anything, these people should be getting some slack cut off them. They are the ones making the apps we might want to use.So, Google, makers of reference devices all the world around, has decided that ...

How Android can really do split-screen multitasking right

Some of you are too young to remember the early days of computing. Back in the 1980’s most of us ran MS-DOS. In this environment your user interface was a black screen with a flashing white cursor (or some other color combination). From there you’d type a command to launch whatever program you wanted to run. That program might have been a word processor, a spreadsheet, an encyclopedia, a game, or some other “app”. Not only could you only run one program at a time, you had to exit out of it if you wanted to switch to another one. Yeah, try writing a research paper ...

Android 6.1 Marshmallow to come in June with Split Screen

We’re testing the Google Pixel C this week and one of the sadder things we had to say about it came in software: Android 6.0 Marshmallow wasn’t fit for a tablet. A team from Google committed during a Reddit AmA that split screen multitasking is “

Google confirms Android split-screen “in the works,” possibly for Android N

Google’s new Android tablet is here, and in a break from tradition, it’s not a Nexus model at all: earlier this week, Google Store sales opened for the new Pixel C. Understandably, Google’s out on a PR blitz to help spread the word about the new tablet, and yesterday that included having some members of the Pixel team participate in a Reddit AMA. During the course of questioning, Google’s Andrew Bowers ...

Android needs multi-window support if it’s going to succeed in the future

I’m Joe the Android Guy, and I’ve written over 1,500 articles for Pocketnow. How many of those were written on an Android-powered device? Sadly, only a handful. I would have expected someone with the moniker of “the Android Guy” to use that platform for the majority of the work he does. If you did too, I’m terribly sorry to disappoint you.Android is a great operating system. It scales from phones and phablets, to ...
