Android 4.3 for US carrier HTC One devices not happening this month

The Android 4.3 update for the HTC One has popped up in certain regions, especially in Taiwan, and, according to some recent reports, on some lucky European owners’ devices. We’re talking Developer Edition phones, as well as unlocked version of the HTC One. According to Jason Mackenzie, head of HTC USA, those rocking a US carrier branded/version of the HTC One will have to wait a little more for their own Android 4.3 update. Previously shared information had us hoping that it would happen by ...

iWatch for fitness, Google share display project, Beats divorces HTC & more – Pocketnow Daily

Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk bout some BlackBerry results along with the official divorce of Beats and HTC. Then we talk about Nokia smartphones getting hover interaction according to new patents. Google is next as an Open Project demo shows us how we can share our smartphone display with other monitors in an easy fashion. We then continue with the iPad 5 and some thickness changes according to leaks, aside from other leaks pointing to a gold iPad mini with Touch ID, but missing a more important feature. We end today’s show talking about iOS 7.0.2, and Apple’s ...

Samsung really wants you to believe it’s not copying Apple with gold phones

A little earlier this week we caught wind of yet another Galaxy S 4 variant, this time delivering the phone with golden accents, as has become such the vogue thing to do lately. After all, Apple introduced a gold option for the iPhone 5S, and it’s proven to be wildly popular (or at least very hard to get your hands on). Then there’s HTC, which might just deliver a gold version of the One, as well as third-party companies all too willing to ...

One more candidate for HTC One Max launch date rumored

Not that it hasn’t for weeks now, but with the HTC One Max hitting TENAA in China, the phablet has been looking more and more like it’s nearly ready to launch. In fact, when sharing that TENAA filing with you we also mentioned what was at the time the latest prediction for a possibly launch date, looking to October 15. We’re still in the same general ballpark, but now another source is stepping forward with an alternate date, suggesting the One ...

Microsoft raises device limit to allow for essentially unlimited app installs

So far, Microsoft’s been pretty lenient with the number of devices on which you could install apps purchased from the Windows 8 store. Buy an app on your Surface, and you could also use it on your Windows 8 laptop, on your all-in-one desktop – all told, you could “roam” the app on a total of five devices tied to your account. At least, that was fine for many users, but if you’ve also got a work PC, or maybe a second tablet, you’re already pushing the limit here. Today Microsoft announces what essentially ...

Microsoft talks need for focus on low-end phones going forward

With news of Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services divisions, we’ve been thinking a lot about what it all means for the future of Lumia devices. So far, we’ve been pretty concerned with branding – would Microsoft use the Nokia name? What about Lumia, or PureView? While we’re still very much interested in getting to the bottom of those questions, they’re ultimately a bit academic – what really matters, after ...

iPad 5 could measure even thinner than we’ve been expecting

As we were just noting when bringing you word of those new pics, seemingly showing off an iPad mini 2 in gold, there’s been no shortage of leaks of new iPad hardware. That’s covered the iPad 5 as well as the mini 2, and both have been popping up in one form or another for months now. We expect the new full-sized iPad to pick up some of the look of the iPad mini, shrinking down its side bezels in ...

Apple recruits Nike FuelBand designer – maybe for iWatch?

Rumors of an Apple smartwatch have been bouncing around for months, going on years, and while everyone seems to think that this so-called iWatch is an inevitability, we’ve yet to see any hard evidence of such a device. Instead, we’ve been tracking more general rumors about its development, and occasionally that’s turned to Apple’s efforts to recruit new staff specifically for this wearable project. Now word of a new hire has leaked out, and it sounds like ...

Pocketnow Weekly 063: Apple soars, BlackBerry plummets, and HTC & Beats divorce

The mobile space is full of profound juxtapositions this week as Apple can’t make enough iPhones to meet demand, while BlackBerry can’t keep its head above water long enough to sell existing stock. Meanwhile, Microsoft announces its second round of Surface products, while soon to be-acquired hardware maker Nokia (allegedly) prepares its own Windows tablet – and the horrible marriage of smartphone maker HTC and audio baron Beats finally, mercifully, dissolves. That’s the big news for the week ending September 27, 2013, and all of it -plus iOS 7 literally making ...

Google Open Project demo shares phone content on larger displays

How many ways are there to get content from your smartphone to an external display? You can use a wired HDMI connection, or even MHL for that matter, and there are wireless options like Miracast. Google researchers have been cooking up something that’s just a bit different from any of those, a new system called Open Project. The idea is to give smartphone users an easy, flexible way to share ...

Crappy tablets don’t sell. Duh.

Back when Android Gingerbread was the latest and greatest operating system out of the Google camp, Apple was selling iPads like crazy. And why wouldn’t they? The iPad was pretty much the only tablet on the market at the time, it was built well, and it got the job done. The bad news? Only Apple made it. Other manufacturers wanted a piece of that action, and since they couldn’t (and still can’t) license iOS to put on their own hardware, they turned to Android. Android, being an open operating system, enabled pretty much anyone to do pretty much anything with it. Android ...
