One big reason Windows Phone phablets make more sense than Android ones

Adam Doud sure doesn’t like the idea of a Windows Phone phablet. Pocketnow’s newest editor is, if nothing else, consistent. He’s denounced the concept of a Nokia-made smartphone/tablet hybrid more than once, with his latest anti-phablet proclamation coming on the heels of today’s unveiling of the new

Nokia Lumia 1320 mid-ranged phablet announced for Europe and Asia

If you thought that Nokia was just working on one phablet according to the rumors, well the company has proven that it’s also capable of keeping things under the radar, even if these things aren’t as hot as we’d wish they’d be. Lust as we saw the big and mid-ranged Lumia 625 earlier this year, Nokia has also announced a larger sibling to serve the mid-ranged European and Asian market. This new phablet is being dubbed the Lumia 1320, which yeah, has a name that makes the Lumia 1020 look bad if we were to follow the numerical designators. The device sports a dual-core ...

Nokia Lumia 1520 announced, a 6-inch Windows Phone for $750

Nokia World is finally happening in Abu Dhabi, and it’s great to see that the company’s new products got announced in time before a competing company stole their thunder. Where is my GDR3 notification center?

Have you ever had that feeling that something is missing? It should be something so obvious, when you walk in the room, that it hits you in the face like a frying pan in a bad marriage. And yet, you just can’t put your finger on it. It’s that dangerous question that a wife asks her husband – “Notice anything?” – and you know there’s something different, but you just don’t see it? Microsoft has that feeling right now. Or at least it should. Or else it should be hit in the face with a frying pan. The power of three GDR3. Just think about that for a ...

Pocketnow Weekly 066: special guest MKBHD joins us to talk Nexus 5, Galaxy Gear, & more!

There comes a time when you just gotta do what the readers want. Particularly when their demands are awesome. You tweeted, you pleaded, you emailed, you told us in person at trade shows and during mildly creepy public run-ins: “have Marques Brownlee on the Weekly!” you demanded. And after weeks of dancing around schedules, overseas trips, and major

What’s new in Windows Phone 8 GDR 3 (Video)

The Windows Phone 8 GDR 3 update was released as a preview for developers just recently, so in this video we’re going to take a look at some of the new features. The update isn’t terribly large, but there are some significant changes.  Check out the video below to see all of the new features. I’m going to start with my favorite new feature.  With Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8 GDR3 you can now access internet sharing without having to go into the phone settings, turn it on, and look up the password.  I’ve paired my Nokia Lumia 925 with my Surface Pro using ...

Third Live Tile column on Windows Phone 8 GDR3 is only for 1080p phablets

Yesterday, Microsoft detailed some of the upcoming features of the GDR3 update for Windows Phone. We were looking at both hardware (1080p resolution, large screen support, Snapdragon 800 SoC support) and software changes that will start coming in effect soon. The third Live Tile column has generated discussions regarding its availability. Apparently, according to Joe Belfiore, the third column will only be available on 1080p screen display-enabled phablets. Furthermore, Belfiore ...

How to install Windows Phone 8 GDR3 for free

The latest update to Windows Phone 8 was just announced today, but more importantly, a method for enthusiasts and developers who want to void the warranty on their phone for the privilege to install the update right away (instead of having to wait for their carriers to approve the update) has also become available.  We heard about this program a while back, but now it’s finally come to fruition.  Having to wait for carriers to approve and allow the distribution of Windows Phone operating system updates has always been extremely frustrating for users.  Of course, the carriers want ...

In addition to bringing new colors to the table, the Nokia refresh is also expected to bring notification icons to the Glance Screen. In the image above, we can clearly see such a notification. Windows Phone 8 GDR3 tipped to bring extra Live Tiles to existing WXGA devices

The past few months have brought us plenty of leaks, rumors, and speculation about what’s next for Windows Phone system software. Primarily, that’s meant looking forward to what to expect from WP8 GRD3, tipped to finally introduce quad-core SoC and 1080p display support, but considering just how many WP8 users are on Nokia hardware, we’ve also had a lot of focus on the company’s own Bittersweet Shimmer enhancements. One thing that’s ...

Nokia Glance Screen color options coming with GDR3 and Bittersweet shimmer

We’ve recently seen that the GDR3 update, together with Nokia’s own Bittersweet shimmer package, will bring additional notification icons to the Glance Screen on devices, where available. Apparently, that’s not the only change Microsoft and Nokia are planning. At the moment, the color of the information displayed is white (and red, for the night mode), but that’s about to change if the image above is legit, claiming more Nokia Glance Screen color options. Since the ...

Nokia Lumia Windows Phones getting hover interaction soon?

Nokia’s Lumia Windows Phones getting hover interaction soon, at least according to a recent report, that is speculating on a couple of patents filed with the European Patent Office. To be more specific, we might be looking at hover-based text and/or object enlargement while reading or UI interaction, as well as handling of text input and icons (where you zoom in on hover and pan upon moving your hand). Nokia is already using hover-interaction on phones running its Lumia Amber package, especially in the Glance Screen, where the device can be woken up from standby to display the time ...

Nokia Glance Screen notifications coming with GDR3 and Bittersweet shimmer

Nokia’s own Glance Screen — the setting which allows you to display the time and battery information on your Lumia device in several different modes, introduced with the Lumia 925, available to all with the Amber update — will apparently be further tweaked in the upcoming Bittersweet shimmer software refresh. One of the main complaints with Glance Screen was (and still is) the fact that it will not display notifications; hence, you’ll need to unlock your phone anyways, in case you want to check on anything else but battery and the time. The Bittersweet shimmer ...
