Forget 3GB; 4GB of RAM already coming to smartphones?

Right now, your top-of-the-line smartphone is going to max out at having 3GB of RAM. And really, despite a couple high-profile Androids launching with such expansive memory at their disposal, the adoption of 3GB has been incredibly slow – far slower than we saw 2GB catch on. Is that because we don’t really need 3GB of RAM just yet? Well, a little thing like that never stopped the tide of progress, and there’s a chance that the first 4GB RAM smartphone could be just around the corner. We’ve been thinking about 4GB of RAM in smartphones since last year. At first, it ...

Is ZTE falling into the same trap as its competition once did?

If you asked me last year if I would have ever considered using a ZTE smartphone as my daily driver, I probably would have chuckled, realized you might actually be serious, then answered with a solid, “No.” It’s not that ZTE is a bad manufacturer. But it has never been known for high-end flagship smartphones, something I’m admittedly a sucker for. Instead, ZTE is globally known for its prepaid and budget smartphone offerings. In fact, as recent as one year ago, ZTE was in a close fight for the position as third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. It has

Three reasons to be excited for the coming ZTE smartphone onslaught

If you’d told me a year ago that one of my key takeaways from CES 2014 would be a renewed interest in ZTE smartphone developments, I’d have told you to “go home, you’re drunk” (which would have been a pretty timely reference back then). Nonetheless, it’s true: of the many impressive sights we beheld at this year’s International CES, the wares showcased by ZTE were high on my list – and if you’re my kind of mobile geek, they ...

Pocketnow Weekly 078: CES 2014 wrap-up – the best and worst from Vegas

Horrible sickness. Missed flights. Broken promises from major airlines. Desert air-induced hacking. A too-late arrival followed by a too-early departure. That’s just a partial list of the challenges faced by the four-man three-man Pocketnow team at 2014′s International CES in Vegas, easily one of the most difficult trade shows we’ve ever done. But while the road was rough, the payoff was (mostly) worth it: in exchange for our hardships, we were among the first to spend time with some of the world’s newest and hottest mobile gadgetry, and we did the best we could to ...

ZTE Grand S II: hands-on (Video)

ZTE’s CES announcements came last week, and while that means there’s less for us to be surprised by at the show now that we’re there, we’re also finally able to check out its new hardware in the flesh. The company had news of a number of devices to share, but one of the handsets we’ve heard the most about has been the Grand S II. ZTE followed-up yesterday on its initial announcement to share a little more about the phone’s ...

ZTE offers new details on Grand S II voice features, hybrid hotspot/projector specs

ZTE wasted no time in getting its CES spread out there, and last Friday we told you about the new devices it announced, including a smartwatch and phablet. As we get closer to the official start of CES itself, ZTE has some additional info to help flesh out the picture for some of its new gear, and today offers new detail about the voice capabilities of the new Grand S II, as well as delves into the feature set of its intriguing portable hotspot/projector. We heard last week that the Grand S II had “high-precision voice,” ...

ZTE reveals CES spread: phones, phablets, and a smartwatch

ZTE is one of those manufacturers that sees quite strong sales on a global level, but fails to really assert itself in our minds as a smartphone heavyweight. Still, we’ve been paying more attention to it lately, going hands-on with the Nubia 5, and hearing about some of the rumored next steps for the company, like its own smartwatch. With CES at the front of everyone’s minds, companies are getting early starts on announcing their new ...
