iPhone 13 series could support faster Wi-Fi 6E

The iPhone 12 was announced just a few months ago, and iPhone 13 rumors have already started coming in. From a smaller notch to the return of TouchID, we’ve heard it all in the past few weeks. Now, it is tipped that the next iPhone series will have support for Wi-Fi 6E. It comes from Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Thomas O’Malley, cited by MacRumors.

As per the report, the investor sentiment surrounding Apple supplier Skyworks has become “too negative” since the semiconductor company will apparently be supplying various components for this year’s “iPhone 13” models. These components include Wi-Fi 6E amplifiers. The report also says that the chipmaker Broadcom also stands to benefit from both Apple and Samsung adopting Wi-Fi 6E this year. For context, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra announced recently houses Broadcom chip for Wi-Fi 6E support.

How does Wi-Fi 6E benefit an average consumer?

The new Wi-Fi 6E offers higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates in the 6GHz land as compared to Wi-Fi 6. It allows more airspace beyond existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. This results in increased bandwidth and less interference for devices that support Wi-Fi 6E. As of now, the iPhone 12 support the standard, non-6 GHz version of Wi-Fi 6.

It is rumored that Apple is planning to integrate TouchID on the upcoming iPhone 13 lineup. Further, the base variants(iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13) will reportedly have LTPS while the Pro variants with 120Hz will feature the LTPO display. The LTPO-TFT backplane could be used to evade the power consumption caused due to the 120Hz refresh rate. You can expect:

  • iPhone 13 mini- 5.4-inch LTPS display, 60Hz refresh rate.
  • iPhone 13- 6.1-inch LTPS display, 60Hz refresh rate.
  • iPhone 13 Pro- 6.1-inch LTPO display, 120Hz refresh rate.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max- 6.7-inch LTPO display, 120Hz refresh rate.

Apple’s TouchID could return with the iPhone 13 lineup

The iPhone 12 was announced just a few months ago, and iPhone 13 rumors have already started making the rounds. A new rumor alleges that the much-beloved touchID would mark its return with the iPhone 13 lineup. The feature disappeared from iPhones when Apple introduced FaceID as the biometric authentication mode. The only 2020 iPhone to have TouchID was the iPhone SE, which featured an iPhone 8-like design with big bezels.

The latest development comes from a couple of tipsters. First, while replying to a user’s tweet, a tipster who goes by the name L0vetodream said that Touch ID will ”be back soon.” However, there was no conclusive evidence of the rumor. But Jon Prosser, famous for his Apple-related leaks has also replied to the same tweet saying, “You’re getting it.” Since there is no upcoming iPhone but the iPhone 13, it is being speculated that the future lineup will come equipped with TouchID.

TouchID could be housed in the power button of iPhone 13

How Apple is planning to integrate TouchID on the iPhones remains unknown. However, the go-to version could be integrating TouchID in the power button, which Apple has already done with the iPad Air 4. It will be interesting to see if Apple applies the same tech on its upcoming iPhone 13 lineup or introduces something new like the in-display TouchID.

The fingerprint biometric authentication feature has been a topic of conversation in the post-Covid-era where people are almost always in masks when outdoors. Hence, FaceID doesn’t work, and you have to enter your pin to unlock your device. For the unaware, Apple got rid of the feature in 2018. But the new iPhone SE and the iPad Air 4 have showcased the importance of fingerprint authentication on mobile devices.

120Hz LTPO display will remain limited to iPhone 13 ‘Pro’ models: Report

One of the signature features of recent flagship devices has been high refresh rate displays. Apple was rumored to bring 120Hz to iPhone 12 but at the end of the day, that didn’t happen. Now, a report claims that iPhone 13 will get the 120Hz refresh rate, but there is a twist. It sheds light on the display tech of the supposed ‘Pro’ variants. It goes on to say that the 120Hz LTPO display will remain limited to the Pro models in the iPhone 13 series.

As per a Korean report, Apple is working on bringing a 120Hz refresh rate to the OLED displays of the top 2 models of its next iPhone lineup. It is likely referring to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max – both ‘Pro’ variants. Moreover, it goes on to say that Samsung and LG will be the supplier for its displays. The latter is said to be housed on all the models except the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The new report clashes with the previous report that claimed all the models will have high refresh rate displays. Further, the base variants(iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13) will reportedly have LTPS while the Pro variants with 120Hz will feature the LTPO display. For the unaware, LTPS is Low-Temperature Polysilicon while the LTPO is Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide.

What is LTPO, anyway?

The latter, LTPO-TFT backplane could be used to evade the power consumption caused due to the 120Hz refresh rate. This will enable Apple to bring the best of both worlds- advantages of LTPS and limited power consumption. These new LTPO displays will help the new iPhone 13 lineup be more power-efficient, and it is rumored that they would also allow them to feature always-on displays.

In a nutshell, you can expect:

  • iPhone 13 mini- 5.4-inch LTPS display, 60Hz refresh rate.
  • iPhone 13- 6.1-inch LTPS display, 60Hz refresh rate.
  • iPhone 13 Pro- 6.1-inch LTPO display, 120Hz refresh rate.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max- 6.7-inch LTPO display, 120Hz refresh rate.

iPhone 13 may arrive with F/1.8 ultrawide lens and LTPO displays

We have received new rumors concerning next year’s iPhone lineup. This time Ming-Chi Kuo gives us details on the camera of the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, and a report from Korea claims that LTPO displays will finally make their way to next year’s iPhone lineup.

First, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that we will receive four new iPhone variants once again. The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max would arrive with a significant camera upgrade, as they would feature a new F/1.8 6P (six elements) ultrawide lens with autofocus. This would give us better quality than the F/2.4, 5P fixed focus ultrawide modules found in this year’s iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. Further, the main lens provider for next year’s iPhone 13 lineup is expected to be Taiwan’s Largan Precision, which would get around 70 percent of all orders.

Then, we move onto the new display in next year’s iPhones, as a report from The Elec says that LG is getting ready to create a new type of OLED panel for the iPhone 13, using a technology known as low-temperature polycrystalline oxide or LTPO. These new displays would consume ten to 20 percent less power than the recently launched iPhone 12 lineup.

“LG Display will expand the production rate of its organic light emitting diode (OLED) panel factory lines dedicated to Apple, TheElec has learned […] LG Display is planning to put in low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) thin-film transistors (TFT) equipment […]
“Apple is planning to apply LTPO TFT to higher-tier iPhone models launching next year. It has used the low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT process so far. An oxide TFT process will be added to become LPTO TFT.
“LG Display likely got prior approval from Apple for its expansion plan – it needs Cupertino’s review to transfer is production liens from LTPS to LTPO. The LTPO equipment being placed in the factory lines will be for OLED panel supply to iPhone next year, while the ones after May will likely be for panels for iPhones of 2022.”

The report also suggests that only two iPhone 13 variants will include the new LTPO displays, which could very well end up being the higher-end iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. However, the report also suggests that these devices won’t feature always-on displays.

“The biggest question for us under-the-hood types: what is an “LTPO” display, and how does it allow for an always-on face? […]
“During the Apple Watch portion of its event, Apple implied that their LTPO tech is the reason the watch can drop its refresh rate and save battery life when it’s not actively being used. But it’s the other components briefly mentioned during the segment, and listed on the news release, that likely make the real difference: “an ultra-low-power display driver, efficient power management integrated circuit, and a new ambient light sensor.”

Now we will only have to wait and see if next year’s iPhone 13 lineup finally gives us a design with a smaller notch and displays with 120Hz refresh rates.
