Nokia’s Viki said to take on every other voice assistant

Cortana. Alexa. Kestra. Bixby. Viki?

Nokia has just filed for trademark protection for the name “Viki” with the European Union. The term is classified to apply to the following:

Software for the creation and monitoring of mobile and web digital asssistants working with knowledge and combining all data sources into a single chat and voice based interface.

In other words, another proprietary digital assistant, if not a Google Assistant.

HMD Global launched the Nokia 6 smartphone in China this week, the first of several to come this year, so we’re trying to see where Viki will land and, if it will, how.

Samsung’s Viv on the Galaxy S8 could have characters called Bixby and Kestra

Multiple trademark applications filed at Korean and European intellectual property regulators are showing off what may become of Samsung’s acquired Viv artificial intelligence technology on the Galaxy S8.

The chaebol announced that a voice assistant would debut with the new phone(s) this coming spring. Sure, you might consider them a dime for a dozen these days, but Samsung is tops when it comes to global smartphone sales volume. The chaebol would have a domain to command over and mine data from if it established an assistant. But in order to do that, the AI will need to act a little more like a human. Part of that begins with giving the voice that a customer will be talking with a name.

The KIPRIS and EUIPO have entries for different pronunciations and spellings of “Bixby” and “Kestra” [PDF download] filed under Samsung’s banner. Both of them are proposed to be used for purposes related to smartphones, software and/or hardware for dictation, voice recognition and other intelligent tasks requiring voice control. The likeliest scenario the two words will be used in will be in naming two voices or characters that might fall under a unified “S Voice” or “Viv” service. GalaxyClub.nl is also speculating that the two may refer to names of individual services provided by the new service.

Samsung acquired Viv Labs, the artificial intelligence company founded by one of the co-creators of Siri, in October.

What could LG V20 S trademark in Europe mean?

Europe is assured not to see the LG V20 in its most common form direct from retailers. Heck, even UK unlocked smartphone retailer Clove wasn’t able to snag the phone through its backchannel negotiations.

But a version of the V20 could be headed the continent’s way anyways. That’s at least what we’re speculating with a trademark appearance at the EU’s Intellectual Property Office.

An trademark protection application from LG for the “V20 S” was filed yesterday. The word mark can apply to “Smartphones; Portable communications apparatus” among other wireless equipment.

No associated leaks have been dug up just yet on the V20 S. We do know that there was an LG G5 SE that featured a lesser Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 than the 820 on regular G5 units. On the other hand, there’s an off-chance that this could be European branding for the smaller, water-resistant V34 that’s currently exclusively sold in Japan.

We’ll have to wait and see if this trademark gets activated — the holiday season is essentially upon us.
