Charging the HTC 10 with another adapter does actually have some risks

It’s getting hot, hot, hot once again for HTC — and we don’t know where the fault lays. The problem comes down to charging the HTC 10 and, perhaps, the LG G5.Android Central’s Jerry Hildenbrand wrote up a post — which you can link to below — describing the blazing danger zone his HTC 10 got into while charging on a power brick that came with his Pixel C. The phone shut off after getting very hot, — Hildenbrand guessed that the phone never stopped charging even after 100 percent — ...

Is USB Type-C too early?

USB Type-C is one of those much-anticipated concepts that has finally made it to the masses – including (finally) me! I just picked up a Nexus 6P and I find myself needed to make a little bit of an adjustment in my charging habits. One of the most attractive features of the USB Type-C connector is the it is reversible. No more cable acrobatics just to find the right way to give your phone some juice. This is a priceless innovation that has been highly sought after for some time. Those who have used recent Apple devices have gotten a taste of this concept with the lighting connector, ...

Rumors point Samsung’s transition to USB-C on the Galaxy Note 6

Remember the Galaxy S5? Remember that weirdo Micro-B connector port that supported USB 3.0?That was a funky aberration, right? Since then, Samsung has decided to keep with plain ‘ol Micro-B for juicing up your phone and delivering data to and from other places. Even as many other OEMs slide over to USB Type-C connectors, the

Industry pressure grows to move audio away from headphone jacks – it’s not just Apple

For as different as smartphones can be, we all expect them to provide certain basics: you start with a touchscreen, add a couple cameras, and toss in a bunch of standard wireless connectivity options. For the better part of forever, that list has also included an analog 3.5mm headphone jack, making connecting headphones or external speakers a snap. But lately it’s felt like the tide is turning away from the classic port, buoyed by rumors that Apple could drop the headphone jack entirely for its next ...

USB type-C gains ability to securely verify certified cables and devices

USB type-C may be the wave of the future, bringing its advanced connectivity to the latest generation of smartphone flagships, but its rise to prominence has been plagued by some bad PR, especially as poorly-made cables and adapters infiltrated the market and found themselves blamed for damaging some expensive hardware. Retailers and concerned consumers had

Monoprice launches cheapest, most diverse line of USB-C cables you can probably trust

For all the convenience and ease of use delivered by USB Type-C technology, the risks associated with buying certain faulty cables and adapters almost don’t make the “upgrade” worth it. Not yet, at least, though if you know where to look and who to listen to for pre-purchase guidance, you should already be safe and never worry your gear will ...

JBL Reflect Aware C earphones leverage USB type-C for active noise cancellation

Big changes are coming to the way we listen to music on our smartphones, and the analog headphones we’ve been using for years are feeling the pressure from new, digital alternatives. Most of the conversation we’re hearing these days is centered around Apple and rumors that it will ditch the analog headphone jack in favor of a Lightning-only solution for the iPhone 7, but headphone-makers have ...

Problematic USB Type-C cables and adapters are now banned on Amazon

How sweet is that new USB Type-C standard? Extremely, ensuring all charging and data transfer ports and accessories are created equal (we’re looking at you, Apple), and eliminating the possibility of plugging a compatible device in the wrong way. When combined with 3.1 technology, it’s even greater, letting you swap digital content between supporting gadgets at mind-blowing speeds. Unfortunately, the two don’t go hand in hand on mainstream phones yet, and USB-C can often do more harm than good if you’re not very careful about the cables and adapters you buy.On the bright side, a

Leaks go against notion of Huawei P9 dual speakers

After a cascade of leaks a couple of weeks ago, we now have another volley of images showing off Huawei’s spring flagship for 2016, the P9.One source on Weibo shows off the back of the phone, though excluding much of the surface area with a black case and labeling. We do see the circular fingerprint sensor, a dual-LED flash module with some sort of focus unit below it and a dual-camera setup. No, the trend of two is not over just yet.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge pic confirms micro USB is making a return: no USB type-C this time

How many images have we seen of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S7 by now? Between the renders, and the recent spate of hands-on picture of actual hardware, there’s been ample opportunity to get a peek at this still-yet-to-launch smartphone. But the problem with pics like those – for as much as they are able to show us about the hardware – is that we don’t get much say in just what we’re looking at. That’s meant a lot of head-on shots, and now a few of the phone’s rear, but not a lot of ...

Apple offers replacements for faulty USB type-C cables

We’re coming up on just about a year now since Apple introduced its latest MacBook, and in doing so became one of the companies helping to lead the charge in the move towards USB type-C connectors as the next-gen standard for data, power, and everything in-between. And while we’re largely welcoming the ongoing adoption of USB type-C with open arms, its arrival hasn’t been ...

USB Type C vs Apple’s Lightning Connector: Smartphone cable showdown

Sure we have wireless charging and cloud data back ups, but we still rely on cables for a lot of our power and data management. iOS users went through a connector transition several years ago, moving from the wide, flat, 30 pin dock connector to the smaller lightning connector. Now the rest of the smartphone industry is migrating to USB Type C. Which cable design offers the better feature set? Which connector has more longevity? Can we call something a “standard” when certain companies remain holdouts?

USB type-C cable tester takes one for the team as bad cable destroys his equipment

For a lot of users, USB type-C represents uncharted waters, so it’s been great to see Google’s Benson Leung wading out into them on our behalf, testing all the type-C cables he can lay his hands on, and sounding the warning when manufacturers are caught selling cables that don’t quite hit the right specifications. Leung already got OnePlus to admit that its cables weren’t up to muster and offered ...
