Apple may be getting closer to deliver a new foldable iPhone

We have been receiving rumors about a new foldable iPhone for some time now, and it seems that we may be getting closer to get one. The latest rumors suggest that Apple is already testing some of its designs to see which device may end up hitting the market.

While looking for interesting information, Jon Prosser received some updates about Apple’s future foldable iPhone. A couple of his sources mentioned that Apple is working on two foldable devices. The first device would be a previously leaked phone with two display panels with a hinge between them, something like what we see in the Microsoft Surface Duo. However, the second device has a clamshell design, which means that we could get an iPhone in the same form factor as the Galaxy Z Flip and the latest Moto RAZR.

According to Prosser’s sources, shells of this device are being tested in a Shenzhen Foxconn factory. These shells are not the entire unit, as Apple may be trying to see just how durable is the hinge mechanism. Now, this device would indeed arrive with a foldable OLED display, which would be supplied by Samsung. They also suggest that Apple is still trying to decide which of the two designs hits the shelves, as only one would make it to the market. In other words, don’t expect Apple to do as Samsung with the Galaxy Z Fold and the Z Flip lineups, or at least for now.

Still, Prosser’s sources claim that Apple may finally join the foldable market until September 2022, and they give that timeframe as their best guess. The reason for this is that there’s nothing concrete on the production schedule of these devices, but a late 2022 or even a 2023 release would sound logical according to Apple’s product progress. In other words, Apple fans will have to wait a while to see these new foldable iPhones.

Google kills Astrophotography mode for wide-angle camera on Pixel smartphones

So, after years of complaints and feverish requests from Pixel owners, Google finally added an ultra-wide camera to its phones – starting with the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. Both the phones have since received a warm reception for their camera prowess. However, it appears that one feature that wasn’t so stellar was astrophotography mode when used with the ultra-wide camera, which is apparently why Google has decided to disable it.

Quality issues appears to be the culprit here

Yes, if you own a Pixel 5 or a Pixel 4a 5G, you can no longer click long-exposure shots of the night sky with the astrophotography mode using the ultra-wide angle camera. “On Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5, astrophotography only works on zoom settings equal to or greater than 1x,” Google mentions on an official support page

As per a 9to5Google report, the change was made back in November with the rollout of Google Camera v8.1 update. Earlier, it was possible to switch to a 0.6x zoom level for astrophotography mode, which handed over the imaging responsibility from the main sensor to the ultrawide camera. Now, users see a warning at the top which says “Zoom to 1x for astrophotography” at the top and the option to switch to the wide-angle lens has been removing entirely.

READ MORE: Google’s 5G Pixels get new Adaptive features, older Pixels also receive a ton of cool tricks

Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G owners are now left with two options only – click an astrophotography mode shot of the night sky using the main camera without any magnification, or get a slightly magnified shot with a 2x zoom output that is digitally cropped. The reason for killing the astrophotography mode for the wide-angle camera on Pixel smartphones appears to have been linked to poor quality.

As per a user complaint on the official forums, the astrophotography mode results achieved by the wide-angle camera are far worse compared to those captured by the main snapper. Have a look at this thread to see for yourself. However, it is unclear if Google will fix the quality issues and bring back the capability on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4a 5G anytime soon.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, Apple’s 27-inch iMac and more on sale today

Let’s begin today’s official news with deals. The year is about to end, but those Samsung trade-in seem like if they’re here to stay. If you’ve been watching us you probably are familiar with them but, that Galaxy Z Fold 2 for $999 continues to be a huge steal for our phone of the year. The Galaxy Note 20 Series is still starting at $450 for the regular model and at $750 for the Ultra. The S20 Series starts at $350 for the S20+, going up to $550 for the Ultra. But again, you need an eligible device to trade-in for all of these. Moving on, the OnePlus 7T is currently $250 off its regular price, leaving it at $349. You can also get the OnePlus 8T for $749 and they’ll give you a 7T for $99 along with it which is a pretty crazy deal. Finally, if you’re in the market for an iMac, the latest 27in model is $100 off, leaving the Intel Core i5, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage model for $1399, We have other deals on more iMacs, Beats headphones and more in the links below.

OPPO Find X3 could feature a custom-made Sony IMX789 lens

Let’s move on to OPPO as, we’re getting somewhat close to the release of the OPPO Find X3 and we know that one of the main things the company plans to focus on is the camera. According to a new leaks from Weibo, OPPO is working with Sony on a custom chip, the Sony IMX789, which we could see on the Find X3 Series. Apparently, all flagship OPPO models will come with a customized sensor, with the one we mentioned previously remaining an exclusive for them. As a reference, the previous Sony IMX766 promises top-notch photography in low light conditions with a 1/1.56in sensor offering 1.0μm, taking in 63.8% more light than the 48MP IMX586. So yeah, we should expect a custom sensor that absorbs a crazy amount of light. Some of the other leaked specs include the Snapdragon 888 5G, a 6.7in display with 525ppi, a 4500 mAh battery with 65W SuperVOOC charging. And, for the camera’s we’re expecting two 50MP sensors, probably including the one we mentioned before.

OnePlus 9 leak reveals major battery and charging technology upgrades

OnePlus is also getting ready to launch their 9 Series as, multiple reports hint that we’ll be getting it earlier in the year, some time in March. We’re expecting 3 devices so far, the OnePlus 9, 9 Pro and even a Lite variant. Well, according to a new report from 91Mobiles, the regular OnePlus 9 will finally get wireless charging support as well as reverse wireless charging. Did I already say finally? IF you remember, earlier this year, the 8 Pro brought this feature but, both the 8T and the 8 missed out but, it looks like the company wants to even things out, only leaving out the Lite variant. Older leaks hint that the OnePlus 9 will bring a flat 6.55in FHD+, OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, it’ll be powered by the Snapdragon 888 5G, 8GB of RAM and it’ll probably start at 128GB of storage. When it comes to the cameras, it’ll apparently bring 2 48MP shooters, with some rumors hinting that we may even get a 50MP sensor from Leica. Wait what, Leica? Could it be that OnePlus is finally gonna fix the one thing they still can’t get right?

12.9-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED display might launch in Q1 2021

Let’s move on to Apple for a couple of segments, as aggressiveness seems to be part of their 2021 too. Let’s start with iPads as we’ve been covering a ton, and I mean a ton of mini-LED iPad rumors and leaks and it looks like we’re finally closing in on getting the actual products. According to a new report from DigiTimes, Apple has diversified their supply chain for displays and touch panels as, BOE has finally received approval to supply OLED for iPhones and integrated touch modules for mini-LED backlit panels for the 12.9in iPad Pro which according to them, will launch in the first quarter of 2021. So if you think about it, Ming Chi Kuo mentioned in one of his research notes that these new mini-LED iPads would begin production in Q4 of 2020 which goes along with this new report from DigiTimes. So yeah, we’re expecting these new iPads in the first half of 2021, most likely in Q1, and they are rumored to bring 5G support as well. Apple is reportedly preparing 6 devices with mini-LED displays but this iPad might be the first one.

Apple might take until 2027 to launch its ambitious car: Kuo

Let’s keep talking about Apple but this time, the Apple Car, which many could argue was anything but true until all the news that happened last week. It definitely looked like Apple was hard at work to get this car out but, this new report makes a lot more sense and it gives us a better time line. According to a new research note from Ming Chi Kuo, this car will be launched sometime between 2025 and 2027 the earliest. To quote Kuo, “we predicted that the car would launch between 2023-2025 but, their latest survey indicates that the current development schedule for the Apple Car is not clear, and if the development actually starts this year and everything goes well, 2025-2027 would be the earliest”. This is apparently due to some changes in the EV and Self-Driving market and Apple’s quality standards, with Kuo saying that he wouldn’t be surprised if it drops until 2028 or later. Last week we heard from Reuters that Apple is already contacting suppliers and that might be true but apparently they’re just beginning this process. And it’s still not clear if we’ll get a self-driving car, or a regular passenger vehicle like the report mentioned last week. We’ll see how the rumors develop over these upcoming years.

Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21+ leak bares all the key specifications and features

Samsung Galaxy S21 series goes up on pre-order in the US

And finally, the Galaxy S21 Series continues to be the hottest topic around as we’re getting really close to the launch. So far, most leaks have focused on the Ultra but now we get some more information on the more affordable siblings. We have a new detailed breakdown from WinFuture of the Galaxy S21 and S21+’s specs. Starting with the S21, it’ll rock a 6.2in FHD+ flat display, which will be 120Hz capable, with Gorilla Glass 7 on top, a downgrade when compared to the QHD+ panels on the S20 Series. It’ll either be powered by the Exynos 2100 or the Snapdragon 888 5G along with 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage and a 4000 mAh battery. When it comes to the S21+, it’ll bring a 6.7in AMOLED display, with the same specs as the S21 and actually less PPI. It’ll also be powered by the Snapdragon 888 or the Exynos 2100, same amount of RAM and same storage but, here we get a 4800 mAh battery. Now, when it comes to the cameras we’re expecting a triple camera module, with a 12MP primary, a 12MP ultra wide and a 64MP telephoto with 3x hybrid zoom. Both of these phones will be 5G capable, IP68 certified and will bring a 10MP selfie shooter. And, speaking of the fact that we’re getting close to the launch date, a new report from XDA reveals that the S21 Series is available for pre-order registrations through the Samsung website. Giving you a good amount of money in trade-in credit. For the Ultra’s specs we’ll link one of the previous Daily’s up here, make sure to check that out.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 may jump into the mid-range category

As 2020 is getting closer to an end, we are starting to get more and more rumors concerning Samsung’s future phones. We have seen that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S21 series is now available for pre-order in the US, along with leaked specs and color options. However, we will focus on Samsung’s future foldables, as a new rumor claims that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 may not be the flagship device we were expecting.

It seems that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 may not be as expensive as we expected, but the main reason for that is because the new foldable may fall in the mid-range phone segment. The guys over at Galaxy Club got their hands on some rather interesting information that suggests that we will get a Galaxy Z Flip 3 variant without 5G support. This variant comes with model number SM-F720F, which indicates that it will be an international model, and it also tells us that it will lack 5G, as all of Samsung’s devices with 5G support have a “B” at the end of the model number.

Now, we are expecting Samsung to launch four new foldable devices in 2021, so it’s not crazy to think that we will also receive a 5G enabled Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, which would also come with a higher price tag. The best example comes from the current Galaxy Z Flip and Z Flip 5G, which are currently selling for $700 and $850 over at Samsung.com right now if you trade in an eligible device.

The worst-case scenario would probably give us a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor or an Exynos 990 with an LTE modem. Remember that the Snapdragon 855 Plus was the last chipset to release in an LTE-only configuration, which is the same processor found in the original Galaxy Z Flip. This choice of components would set it in the same category as the Galaxy S20 FE, but let’s remember that the S20 FE is not a bad phone at all. Now, we will only have to wait and see if we get more info about Samsung’s upcoming foldables before the possible launch of the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, which is expected to take place on January 14.

Almost a year after its launch, Sony Xperia Pro 5G might finally come to the US market

So, Sony launched the sleek Xperia 1 II flagship all the way back in February and it hit the US soil rather late in June. But if you remember, Sony also launched another flagship alongside the Xperia 1 II called the Xperia Pro 5G that offered mmWave 5G support and had some extra camera-centric chops. Well, it appears that the Xperia Pro 5G is finally ready to hit the US shores soon, but ten months too late following its launch.

It will most likely cost over $1000

Now, we don’t know a date as to when the Xperia Pro 5G will go on pre-order or starts shipping. B&H has currently listed the status as “Coming Soon”, and is asking users to sign up to get notified when it eventually goes on sale or the pre-orders go live for customers in the US. So yeah, your guess is as good as ours in this case. Now, there is no information about how much it will burn from your wallet, but it will most likely cost north of $1,000 if the Xperia 1 II’s asking price is any indication.

Talking about the device itself, the Xperia Pro 5G comes equipped with a 6.5-inch 4K (3840×1644 pixels) HDR OLED display with a tall 21: 9 aspect ratio. The IP68-rated device is powered by the Snapdragon 865 SoC ticking alongside 12GB of RAM and 512 gigs of onboard storage that can further be expanded using a microSD card of up to 1TB capacity. A 4,000mAh battery with support for fast charging keeps the lights on.

In the imaging department, you get a trio of 12MP sensors (wide + ultra-wide + telephoto) cameras at the back that offer up to 3x optical zoom output and can shoot cinematic 24 FPS (25/30/60 FPS options also available) videos at 4K resolution. An 8MP camera on the front handles selfies and video calls.

What separates the Xperia Pro 5G from the Xperia 1 II is its 360-degree 5G antenna system that is more efficient at picking up mmWave 5G signals. Notably, the Sony offering has an HDMI port at the bottom and can be connected to a professional camera to serve as a hi-res 4K monitor. When used as a monitor, the device offers controls such as brightness, pinch to zoom, and grid lines.

Also, when it is connected to a camera, the device can also be used to directly stream videos over a 5G network. Sony says that the wired connection between the phone and a professional camera also makes the process of file transfer much faster.

Xiaomi is doing the ‘no charger in retail package’ thing much better than Apple

So, it begins. Following in the footsteps of Apple, other smartphone makers have begun to ditch the charger from the retail package of their smartphones in the name of environmental concern and reducing e-waste. The first brand to do so is Chinese giant Xiaomi, whose latest flagship – the Mi 11 – doesn’t come with a charging brick. Xiaomi announced the move a day ahead of the launch itself, but the company has today revealed a rather consumer-friendly move that will honor Xiaomi’s commitment towards environmental protection and will also make a lot of concerned buyers happy.

Xiaomi is offering a 55W charger at no additional cost

Xiaomi has announced that it will offer the Mi 11 flagship in two bundles – one without the charger, and one with a 55W GaN charger – for the same price. Yes. you right that right. Buyers won’t have to shell out extra cash for buying the Mi 11 bundle that comes with a 55W charging brick. Xiaomi’s move kills two birds with one stone!

In fact, it shifts the responsibility into the hands of buyers. Now, the customers can decide if they want a new charger with their Mi 11, or if they can make do with those already lying around at home. As for the cost, Xiaomi has priced the Mi 11 at ¥3,999 (~ $611), which is a terrific value for the package. In fact, it is going to be one of the most affordable Snapdragon 888 phones of 2021 from a reputed brand, and if its predecessor is anything to by, the Mi 11 will offer an unbeatable value for your bucks.

READ MORE: Xiaomi Mi 11 with SD 888, 2K AMOLED 120Hz display, 108MP camera goes official

But before you get too excited, the offer is only limited to Xiaomi’s home market of China. “As for the in-box charger removal, the announcement is for Mainland China market. Xiaomi will be offering two versions, one with smartphone only, and the other with the smartphone and a separate 55W GaN charger as a bundle, both at the same price,” the company notes in a statement shared with Android Authority. We don’t know if Xiaomi will extend the offer to more markets, but it definitely will be a welcome move.

Xiaomi’s implementation is technically the most efficient way to sell the idea of a flagship smartphone without a charger in its retail package in the name of environmental protection. By selling the charger at no additional cost to customers who really need one, Xiaomi is sending the message loud and clear – it cares for the environment as well as its customers.

Maybe it’s time for Apple to emulate Xiaomi?

Apple set the ball rolling for this ‘no charger in the retail package’ trend, but for customers purchasing an iPhone 12 Pro Max that can cost up to $1,400, not having a similar offer on the table is definitely annoying on its own. And with Xiaomi – a company that has been frequently accused of copying Apple – coming up with the better solution, buyers of a shiny new iPhone 12 will definitely feel the pinch even more now. Maybe, it’s now time for Apple to extend a similar gesture to its buyers?

I, for one, would definitely appreciate Apple launching a similar offer for iPhone 12 buyers. What is even bewildering to me is that Xiaomi is offering an impressive 55W fast charger with the superior GaN charging technology. But Apple, on the other hand, is asking buyers to spend an additional $19 for its noticeably slower 20W USB-C charger? Strange times!

Tesla will ‘start operations’ in India early next year, says the country’s transport minister

Tesla’s foray into the Indian market has so far been shrouded in rumors and speculations. However, it appears that the top brass at Tesla and the Indian government have been in talks and the EV maker might finally set foot on the Indian soil next year. Nitin Gadkari, India’s Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, said in an interaction with Indian Express that Tesla will “start operations” in India in early 2021.

Tesla will start by selling its electric cars in India and will handle the sales operations directly. The company will then explore manufacturing and production plans in the country based on how well Tesla’s cars are received in India. Until then, Tesla will import its cars in the country and will likely focus on its cheapest offering – the Model 3.

However, Tesla’s much-awaited India debut certainly won’t happen in January. Responding to a tweet that asked about Tesla’s potential arrival in India in January, the company’s CEO Elon Musk mentioned that a January debut is not on the cards. However, he did affirm that Tesla will ‘definitely’ enter the Indian market in 2021. Back in October this year, Musk tweeted that Tesla will enter the Indian market in 2021 for sure.

READ MORE: Tim Cook refused a meeting to discuss Apple’s acquisition of Tesla, claims Elon Musk

Another report from Economic Times mentions that the Model 3 will start at approximately Rs. 55 lakh in India, which translates to roughly $74,800 based on the current conversion rate. The asking price is much higher for the Indian market compared to the US market, where the Model 3 currently starts at around $38,000.

That price markup is because Tesla will import all Model 3 units in India, which means a lot of taxes and import duties will be levied on it. While Tesla’s entry will give a huge push to the nascent EV industry in India, the company will have to tackle another huge challenge – building a robust charger infrastructure in the country prior to scaling up its operations in the country.

OnePlus 9 series will reportedly skip the periscope-style telephoto camera

As the rumored March 2021 debut of the OnePlus 9 family inches closer, it increasingly appears that the company will miss out on one of the hottest camera technology trends once again. I am talking about periscope-style telephoto cameras or folded lens cameras. Yeah, the one with a rectangular lens opening that you’ve seen on the likes of Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Leakster Digital Chat Station, who commands a fairly accurate track record when it comes to Chinese smartphone brands, has tweeted (translated) that the OnePlus 9 series features a regular telephoto lens. He also added that multiple upcoming smartphones – likely referring to high-end devices – won’t feature a periscope camera system next year as well.

READ MORE: OnePlus 9 leak reveals major battery and charging technology upgrades

Another missed opportunity for OnePlus to up its camera game

If true, this would be a major disappointment for OnePlus loyalists, because camera prowess is one key area where OnePlus smartphones have customarily lagged behind Samsung and Apple’s offerings. In case you’re not familiar, a periscope-style telephoto camera system uses prisms to bend light and offers a much higher optical zoom range. In simple words, you can zoom in on objects much farther away compared to a regular telephoto camera without losing much in terms of detail.

However, the latest leak isn’t entirely shocking though. Leaked CAD-based renders that surfaced online last month also showed a quad-camera array at the back, but none of them had the signature rectangular lens opening of a periscope camera system. OnePlus’ Pro flagship for 2021 will likely be powered by Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 888 processor and will reportedly retain the 120Hz display as well.

Notably, OnePlus is expected to shake up its smartphone portfolio once again next year by launching three smartphones in the core OnePlus 9 series. As per leaks, the upcoming trio will consist of the OnePlus 9, its Pro variant, and the OnePlus 9 Lite. The latter will reportedly draw power from the Snapdragon 865 processor and will likely be priced somewhere around the $600 mark.

OPPO Find X3 could feature a custom-made Sony IMX789 lens

OPPO launched the Reno5 Pro+ recently as its first smartphone that is powered by the latest Snapdragon 888 chipset. It comes with an electrochromic rear and a 50MP Sony IMX766 lens built in partnership with Sony. Now, it seems like the Chinese company has plans to upgrade the camera features of its upcoming flagship as the latest leak states that OPPO and Sony are also working on a custom chip named Sony IMX789. We could see it on the OPPO Find X3 series.

The leak comes from Weibo via a reliable tipster who claims that Sony and OPPO are working together on a new sensor. This lens could be called Sony IMX789, and it could be seen first on the upcoming OPPO Find X3 flagship smartphone. As per the machine-translated text, all flagship models from OPPO are tipped to use a customized sensor. Moreover, the lens could remain exclusive to OPPO for certain a period. While it is unclear which upcoming OPPO smartphone will be arriving with the new IMX789 lens, we expect it to be present on the Find X3 series. It could also launch alongside the Reno6 series that may debut by mid-2021.

The Sony IMX766 is the latest camera sensor from the brand. It promises a top-notch photography experience in low-light conditions. It features a 1/1.56-inch sensor and it offers a  unit pixel area of 1.0μm. The sensor can intake 63.8 precent more light as compared to the 48MP Sony IMX586 lens.

As per earlier leaked information, the upcoming OPPO Find X3 Pro is codenamed Fussi. It is said to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G processor and a new ‘full-path color management system. The OPPO Find X3 Pro was earlier expected to feature two 50MP IMS766 image sensors from Sony. It might have a 6.7-inch display with a 1440 x 3216 pixel resolution (525ppi). OPPO’s new flagship is also expected to include a dual cell 4500mAh battery, with support for 65-watt SuperVOOC 2.0 wired charging and 30-watt VOOC Air wireless charging.

According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple has diversified its supply chain for displays and touch panels. BOE has finally received approval to supply OLED panels for the iPhone. Plus, GIS will be providing touch panels for both the ‌iPhone‌ and the upcoming ‌iPad Pro‌.

As per the report, GIS has approved investments of NT$2.198 billion (US$76.3 million) and NT$1.421 billion proposed by its subsidiary in Chengdu, China in August and November 2020 respectively. These funds will be used to expand production for integrated touch modules used in tablets. The subsidiary will invest another NT$753 million to improve production line automation. As per the sources, it currently produces integrated touch modules for iPads and MacBooks. The report goes on to say:

Besides iPhones, GIS will produce integrated touch modules for miniLED-backlit panels of 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ to be launched in first-quarter 2021, the sources noted.

Xiaomi might launch 3 foldable phones in 2021

We recently reported that the foldable smartphone market is all set to expand next year. While Samsung and HUAWEI have been in the segment for a couple of years now, Google could try its hands at the foldable market. Plus, Chinese OEMs like OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi are also said to introduce their folding phones in 2021. Moreover, Xiaomi has already showcased its own take on the foldable segment this January. According to a tweet, the Chinese company could launch up to three foldable smartphones in 2021.

The latest development comes from analyst Ross Young, who took to Twitter to claim that Xiaomi is working on bringing three foldable phones next year. He goes on to say that the company will have three types of devices. It is expected to unveil an outfolding phone, an in-folding device as well as a clamshell. However, we don’t know what type of display technology the devices are going to use.

So the next foldable to hit the market will likely be from Xiaomi who is expected to have 3 foldables in the market in 2021. They will actually have all 3 types. The first will be outfolding, the second will be in-folding and the third will be clamshell.

Ross Young

Earlier, Young has said that Samsung will announce at least three foldable phones as well. He claims that there will be no Z Fold Lite, which is surprising since several rumors have pointed towards the presence of the device. Instead, as per Ross, Samsung could announce a new Z Flip Lite in late 2021. The South Korean company is likely already working on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, which are tipped to be announced in the third quarter of 2021. As per Young, the Galaxy Z Flip Lite will have a 6.7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate.
