OnePlus 9R vs Google Pixel 4a 5G: Budget flagship or budget champion?

With the OnePlus 9 series, the company has entered the bonafide flagship territory where the likes of Apple and Samsung offer their top-end phones. While the company has definitely upped its game in the hardware department and made strides to improve the camera performance as well, it is still keeping a foot firmly planted in the budget flagship territory. At least in a few markets. The best example of that strategy is the OnePlus 9R, which is currently exclusive to the Indian market. But how well does it stack up a similarly-priced Google phone? Read this OnePlus 9R vs Google Pixel 4a 5G comparison to find out which one’s the better option:

Display

lake blue OnePlus 9R

High refresh rate display, or not?

High refresh rate display or not? That’s the question you should ask yourself before considering either device. If you’ve previously used a phone with a 90Hz panel, going back to a 60Hz panel can be a not-so-good experience. Actually, it is a bad experience, and you can take my word for that. And that’s exactly what happens if you go with the Google Pixel 4a 5G.

OnePlus 9R offers a 6.55-inch AMOLE display with FHD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. The panel supports the sRGB and P3 color gamut, and is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass. There is a circular hole-punch cutout that plays home to the 16MP front camera.

black pixel 4a 5G

On the Google Pixel 5, you get a smaller 6.2-inch FHD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) display, but the screen refresh rate is capped at 60Hz. If you’re someone who has gotten used to a 90Hz or higher refresh rate screen, moving back to a 60Hz is a major compromise. The hole-punch aesthetics will greet you on the Google phone as well.

OnePlus 9R vs Google Pixel 4a 5G: Internals

OnePlus 9R races way ahead of the Pixel 4a 5G when it comes to raw processing power. The OnePlus offering relies on the flagship-grade Snapdragon 870 SoC, while the Google Pixel 4a 5G comes equipped with the Snapdragon 765G 5G SoC. Additionally, the memory configurations are also more diverse (and powerful too) in case of the OnePlus device.

OnePlus 9R is a flagship, Pixel 4a 5G is strictly not

You choose between 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB options for the OnePlus 9R, while the Pixel 4a 5G is available in a single 6GB + 128GB model. Unfortunately, there is no scope for storage expansion on either phone. However, the Google phone offers a 3.5mm headphone jack, while its OnePlus rival misses out on this convenience.

Another key area where the OnePlus 9 emerges as a far better option is charging speeds and battery capacity. The OnePlus device offers a 4,500mAh battery with support for blazing-fast 65W fast charging. The Google Pixel 4a 5G, on the other hand, packs a smaller 3,800mAh battery that maxes out at 18W fast charging.

OnePlus 9R vs Google Pixel 4a 5G: Camera

pixel 4a 5G white

Choose between versatility and the Pixel camera experience

Right off the bat, the OnePlus 9R offers a camera setup that is more versatile, but the actual color science is where the Google Pixel 5a might emerge as the winner. OnePlus has four cameras at the back, with the main shooter utilizing the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor backed by both OIS and EIS. There is also a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5MP camera for macro photography, and a 2MP depth sensor. You get a 16MP front camera.

Coming to the Google Pixel 4a 5G, it offers an optically-stabilized 12.2MP dual-pixel main camera, sitting alongside a 16MP ultra-wide camera at the back. And to take care of selfies, you get an 8MP front camera. Both the phones can capture 4K videos at 60fps though.

OnePlus 9R vs Google Pixel 4a 5G: Pricing

The Google Pixel 4a 5G is currently priced at $499 and comes in two color options – Just Black and Clearly White. As for the OnePlus 9R, it costs around $550 and is up for grabs in Carbon Black and Lake Blue colors, but it is currently limited to the Indian market.

Google kills Astrophotography mode for wide-angle camera on Pixel smartphones

So, after years of complaints and feverish requests from Pixel owners, Google finally added an ultra-wide camera to its phones – starting with the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. Both the phones have since received a warm reception for their camera prowess. However, it appears that one feature that wasn’t so stellar was astrophotography mode when used with the ultra-wide camera, which is apparently why Google has decided to disable it.

Quality issues appears to be the culprit here

Yes, if you own a Pixel 5 or a Pixel 4a 5G, you can no longer click long-exposure shots of the night sky with the astrophotography mode using the ultra-wide angle camera. “On Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5, astrophotography only works on zoom settings equal to or greater than 1x,” Google mentions on an official support page

As per a 9to5Google report, the change was made back in November with the rollout of Google Camera v8.1 update. Earlier, it was possible to switch to a 0.6x zoom level for astrophotography mode, which handed over the imaging responsibility from the main sensor to the ultrawide camera. Now, users see a warning at the top which says “Zoom to 1x for astrophotography” at the top and the option to switch to the wide-angle lens has been removing entirely.

READ MORE: Google’s 5G Pixels get new Adaptive features, older Pixels also receive a ton of cool tricks

Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G owners are now left with two options only – click an astrophotography mode shot of the night sky using the main camera without any magnification, or get a slightly magnified shot with a 2x zoom output that is digitally cropped. The reason for killing the astrophotography mode for the wide-angle camera on Pixel smartphones appears to have been linked to poor quality.

As per a user complaint on the official forums, the astrophotography mode results achieved by the wide-angle camera are far worse compared to those captured by the main snapper. Have a look at this thread to see for yourself. However, it is unclear if Google will fix the quality issues and bring back the capability on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4a 5G anytime soon.

Adaptive Features for Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G)

Adaptive Sound: This feature uses the phone’s mic to detect the acoustics in your surroundings and accordingly adjusts the sound output from the phone’s speaker by playing with the sound equalizer settings.

Adaptive Connectivity: The Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G) will automatically switch to 4G for tasks such as basic web browsing and social media usage, while 5G will be enabled only in demanding scenarios such as content streaming or large file downloads. Intelligently stepping down from 5G to 4G network is claimed to boost battery life.

                says

Adaptive Battery: This context-aware feature starts power saving when it detects users are about to miss the usual charging schedule. Google says it also helps preserve battery health by variably controlling how fast the phone charges.

Google also mentioned that the latest Pixel feature drop further enhances the accuracy of GPS on Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G) when users are walking. However, this enhancement is limited to a certain regions only.

                New features for older Pixels

Google is also bringing some new features to the Pixel 4a and Pixel 3 series devices that were earlier limited to the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G). The first one is Hold For Me, which makes the Google Assistant wait for you on the line when a business puts your call on hold, and once the person on the other end is available to speak again, it will alert users about it. However, it currently supports only English and is limited to the US market.

The latest Pixel Feature Drop also brings the Extreme Battery Saver mode to older Google smartphones. As the name suggests, it aggressively saves power by automatically limiting certain apps and prioritizing only the most important ones.

The redesigned image editor in Google Photos now shows new suggestions for tweaking variables such as brightness and colors, and has also introduced a bunch of sky suggestions to let users create multiple sunrise and sunset scenarios in their photos with a single tap.

Additionally, group video calls on Google Duo have gained support for screen sharing, but only if you are hooked to a Wi-Fi (or 5G) network.

Google has also added a new Google Lens integration that makes it easier to translate text during your web browsing sessions. When you open a web page that is in a different language, just enter the app overview for multi-tasking and tap on Lens icon to quickly see a translation of the on-screen text.

Users can now export the Now Playing tracks into a YouTube Music playlist

Pixel smartphones come with a Now Playing that automatically recognizes songs playing around you, and a record of these songs is saved under the “Now Playing History” in the Settings apps (Sound & vibration > Advanced > Now Playing). Now, users can export all those songs into a separate playlist on YouTube Music in a couple of easy steps.

Coming to personalization, Pixel smartphone users can now play with new icons, grid views and app shapes. Plus, they can also pick one from a set of custom wallpapers of famous artworks sourced from the Google Arts & Culture platform. These wallpapers will soon be available directly within the wallpaper categories in settings.

Amazon and Apple to face antitrust scrutiny in Germany

And, I guess this can become a spin off of the ban section, since it seems that political drama remains a thing in tech these days? Apple and Amazon are both facing scrutiny in Germany for “brand gating”. Basically, this allows the makers of branded products, in this case Apple with the iPhone, to have independent sellers removed from the platform, in this case Amazon, for Amazon to sell them instead… which is kind of what we’ve seen since day one. Amazon responded by saying that they have never removed sales permissions of sellers without sound and specific reasons as, they invest heavily into protection customers from illegal distribution of goods. However, the German agency claims that Apple and Amazon are a clear example of this. Similar claims have been made in the past and in other countries so, we’ll see how both companies thread after this, though I’m seriously hoping this doesn’t mean the end of Apple deals on Amazon.

macOS Big Sur beta references three unreleased Macs ahead of Apple Silicon debut

Now, moving on to something I’m really excited about, let’s talk Apple Silicon Macs. The company is reportedly having an event on November 17th focused on these Macs, and the latest update of the macOS Big Sur beta gives us more information. The files were discovered by a user on Twitter, where we get to see three different, unreleased Mac models. The models ending with f, g and h are all new, with one of them added back in beta 10 and 2 with the latest beta 11. If you go up in the list, the model ending with 2019 f, belongs to the 16in MacBook Pro I’m rocking, so 2020 f will most likely belong to the 2020 model which was leaked yesterday in the Boot Camp update. The other files most likely belong to a new iMac, and a MacBook Air. We don’t have much other information as of right now but, things should start ramping up very soon as we get closer to the event. I’m not gonna regret buying a MacBook Pro right now, I promise.. I’m trying.. Ugh, like seriously Apple?

The iPhone 12 mini was recently caught on video

Now, let’s keep talking about Apple’s unreleased products, and unreleased is a keyword here. Yes, Apple already announced the iPhone 12 Mini but, it’s not even available to preorder for another week. Well, a Romanian Tech Journalist managed to get his hands on one and went live for 40 minutes with the phone, showing off, well everything. He compares the size to the iPhone 12 and the 11 Pro Max and, man this thing looks tiny. He also shows us the camera working, both rear and the selfie shooter. At first we thought it could be a dummy because, even if he has the phone plugged in to show a screen recording, every time he showed us the display he couldn’t move it. However, we went through the whole thing and he did move it a couple of times so, it looks like the real deal. This iPhone 12 Mini brings a 5.4in display with pretty much the same capabilities as the iPhone 12, expect some coverage on it as soon as we are able to get it. I’m not gonna lie, this looks like such an iPhone 5 throwback and I like it.

                Story of the day:

The latest Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra renders show an extra sensor

And finally the hottest news today have to do with Samsung and how it keeps moving things around with the Galaxy S21. Even if we are expecting the Galaxy S21 to launch earlier than expected, apparently Sammy is still tweaking the design… continuously. Last week we got the first renders for the device and I said that they might change over time. Well, OnLeaks is back at it again, this time with a revised version of his renders for the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The display and the camera module pretty much look the same but, there’s an extra camera here. The first renders brought a quad camera array but, this new one includes 5. From what we can see, this includes the main sensor, a wide angle, the periscope telephoto, and two extra sensors. One of them might be a ToF sensor, but that still leaves a mysterious one out. The S21 Ultra is expected to bring an updated version of the 108MP sensor we get on Samsung flagships, as well as a 40MP selfie shooter to match the original Ultra. Some other rumors hint to this 5th lens being a second telephoto, but that’s all speculation. And again, we are expecting these to launch either in late January, or early February.
