Facebook now lets you move photos and videos to Dropbox

Facebook expanded the availability of its data transfer tool to more users earlier this year in June, allowing the movement of media such as videos and pictures to Google Photos. Launched as part of the company’s open-source Data Transfer Project – which is backed by the likes of Google, Apple and Microsoft – the company is now expanding its scope to include more cloud-based storage services to give users more options than just Google’s Photos.

In its official blog post, Facebook notes that users can now use the aforementioned tool to move their videos and photos to Dropbox and Koofr. “We’ve long believed that if you share data with one service, you should be able to move it safely and securely to another. That’s the principle of data portability, which gives people control and choice while also encouraging innovation,” Facebook says. The data transfer tool can be accessed from the settings within the Your Information Section. Here’s how to proceed:

File window with photo thumbnails, "Transfer a Copy of Your Photos or Videos" prompt, and "Start Transfer" button
  • Open the Settings page on Facebook.
  • Tap on Your Facebook Information.
  • Click on Transfer a Copy of Your Photos and Videos
  • Once there, enter your Facebook credentials.
  • After entering the password, tap on the Choose Destination dropdown and select Dropbox or Koofr to transfer your photos and videos.
  • Choose if you want to transfer your photos or videos, because the tool only supports one media type at a time.
  • Sign in to your Dropbox account and hit the Allow button.
  • Now, hit the Confirm Transfer button.

The data transfer tool currently supports only three services – Google’s Photos, Dropbox and Koofr – but the company has promised that it will add more names to the list soon. “There will be more partnership announcements in the coming months,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying by TechCrunch. Facebook is also urging other companies that offer cloud-based storage service to join its Data Transfer Project, so that users have more options at their disposal.  Moreover, the social media titan also assures that all data is encrypted when the transfer is in progress, making sure that your photos and videos are secure.

Dropbox is testing a password manager app, but it is invite-only right now

Using a password manager is a no-brainer these days, thanks to the ton of services an average internet user signs up for. While there are options aplenty out there, Dropbox is also throwing its hat in the ring with its own version called Dropbox Passwords which is currently in the early access (or beta) phase on Android.

At the time of writing this, the app is available to download on the Play Store, but it is accessible on an invite-only basis. What this means is you can install Dropbox’s password manager app on your phone, but you won’t be able to use the features without an invite to test it out.

As for the features, the Dropbox Passwords app offers cross-device and cross-platform password syncing. Dropbox says that its password manager app uses zero-knowledge encryption to make sure that credentials are accessible only by the user and their accounts remain safe from hacks.

There is no such thing as “the cloud,” it’s just somebody else’s computer

Nearly everybody uses cloud services these days, to some varying degree. It’s almost unavoidable at this point; the moment you set up an Android phone, it prompts you to create a Gmail account in order to download apps, then proceeds to automatically back up your contacts and other information to the cloud. The same goes for Apple’s iCloud service, and Microsoft’s OneDrive as well. At any given moment, your phone could even be uploading your photos to the cloud, if you have such a feature enabled on your phone. Even if you try your best to avoid it, it’s likely that ...

OnePlus One gets a new, lower price – permanently

Back at the start of the month, OnePlus teased what was supposed to be a major announcement – one that would “shake up” the industry. Well, we didn’t get the launch of any new hardware or anything so interesting, and found ourselves left with the consolation prize of a $50 discount on the OnePlus One. On its own, that wasn’t huge news – sales comes and sales go, and especially for a one-year-old phone, a price cut now and then is to be expected. Today, however, OnePlus tweaks that deal in a ...

These are the best cloud storage options for mobile users

While smartphones haven’t exactly changed all that much in the last two or three years, the services and applications that make them run definitely have. The apps and services are smarter, more affordable, and more openly available to a wider array of devices and operating systems.More specifically, cloud storage is available in abundance. Two years ago, cloud storage was relatively expensive, corresponding mobile application support was sparse, and there were only a few services to choose from.

Dropbox brings its Mailbox app to Android users

This time last year, Dropbox had just bought Orchestra, the company behind Mailbox, the popular email app for iOS. At the time, the Dropbox team posted an announcement of the news, mentioning the desire to see Mailbox get “into as many people’s hands as possible.” Well, moving beyond the iOS user base sounds like a prime way to do just that, and today Dropbox announced a “new chapter” for Mailbox with the debut of an Android port. Mailbox for Android is in the Play Store as of right now, free for you to install. At ...

Motorola leadership finds a new home in the cloud

MWC 2014 is just over a week away, and its schedule has already been coming togtehr to include announcements from some of mobile’s biggest brands. Companies like Nokia and Samsung are expected to show off some new hardware, but not everyone will be bringing along new gear; Motorola, for instance, sent out its own MWC invitations last week, but made it clear that instead of having any major hardware news, it would instead be talking about the business itself. Considering the new Lenovo ownership, there’s plenty ...
