Best Buy takes LG G5 discounts to a whole new level with $240 Sprint bargain (and more)

No, the LG G5 isn't a perfect phone, especially a year in, but at $240 all in all, it might be impossible to resist on the very eve of G6's announcement.

‘Weak’ LG G5 blamed for yet another even more disappointing company quarter

LG is quick to single out the very weak-selling G5 as the culprit of the company's big overall Q4 financial losses, but that's not entirely fair.

LG G6 reportedly confirmed for MWC debut next month, March 10 commercial launch rumored

Not to be outdone by Samsung insiders recently getting specific about the Galaxy S8’s release timing, people allegedly familiar with LG’s H1 mobile product roadmap now claim to know exactly when the G6 will be rolled out domestically.

It’s even earlier than previously rumored, namely on March 10, which would be a measly couple of weeks on the heels of the non-modular flagship phone’s MWC announcement in Barcelona, Spain.

Speaking of, Korean press apparently received confirmation from a “high-ranking” company official that the G5 sequel will indeed be coming out at this year’s Mobile World Congress sometime late next month. Most likely, on February 26, the very day before the trade show actually kicks off.

The boldly experimental but ultimately too fanciful and out-of-focus G5 also saw daylight at MWC last year, needing however over a month to reach end users. Meanwhile, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge on February 21, rapidly following up with European and North American distribution, which obviously worked out quite well.

That’s probably LG’s plan now, although it remains to be seen if mass production can ramp up in due time. The LG G6 could get a jump on the Galaxy S8, widely expected out in April, aiming to stand out with a super-high-res 2:1 LCD screen, cleaner design, iris scanner, MST functionality, and both a headphone jack and USB Type-C port too.

Best Buy discounts LG G5 for AT&T, Sprint, Verizon to $350

Best Buy is clearing out the rest of its LG G5 inventory after letting it idle past holiday shopping time.

It has units of various colors compatible with AT&T, Sprint and Verizon networks for a cost of $349.99 with savings of at least $230 on the table. The big box retailer is also coupling the phone with an accessories bundle for free.

Note that these aren’t unlocked units, but you will have gotten one of this year’s top-tier phones for a major discount (for reasons beyond its natural depreciation) and you won’t have to worry about financing it with your service payments.

LG G6 sales may start a month earlier, right after MWC

While the LG G5 was launched at MWC this year in late February, it took about a month before units started getting to consumers.

But with Samsung potentially calling for an April reveal of the Galaxy S8, it seems that LG wants as much headroom as possible for its G6, according to word from The Electronic Times out of Korea.

The company is supposedly moving up its first ship dates closer to right around MWC time, which starts on February 27. The company has moved up its production schedule to align with this change, made in the hopes of amping up sales volume.

LG has been losing money on its smartphones for the past six quarters and its especially been the case with the G5’s performance that a turnaround was in order. This change is one in several made in the wake of that phone’s poor buy rate. The subsequent release of the critically acclaimed V20 has done somewhat better in the market, though its performance pales to those of other certain phones.

The chaebol declined to address any rumored details on what it terms its “next strategic smartphone.”

LG G6 leaked schematics affirm company’s new design language for phones

If the LG G5 and V20 has shown us anything, it’s that the chaebol really seems to like its dual-camera implementation. So much so, in fact, that it may carry on the phones’ design language for another season.

Shai Mizrachi, in partnership with Android Authority, has leaked out a generic design diagram showing off the X and Y dimensions of the phone, along with some feature call-outs.

The dual-camera module is similar to those seen in LG’s past two flagship phones with a fingerprint sensor placed below it and some side-mounted volume buttons to follow. There’s a circular port on one of the Y edges that’s likely a headphone jack, but we aren’t entirely sure what’s going on here.

The 72.43mm width of the phone is about 1.5mm slimmer than the G5. The thickness may also get cut down, too, but that’s undetermined at this point.

The phone is expected out about the same time as last year, either around or shortly after MWC 2017.

AT&T’s iPhone 7 BOGO deal expands to Best Buy with free gift cards also on tap

Reckon you can’t do much better this final part of the holiday season than buy one iPhone 7 and get one free of charge after monthly bill credits from AT&T? Think again, as Best Buy just upped the discount ante to also include $900 in complimentary gift cards.

There are a bunch of strings attached, naturally, and strict conditions you need to adhere to. First of all, you’ll have to swing by a physical Best Buy store, and activate two new AT&T lines with your two-for-one iPhone 7 units.

More importantly, you’ll only qualify for the $900 coupons if you’re willing to trade in a pair of iPhone 6 or newer devices in presumably mint condition. Eligible traders can get $700 in gift cards in addition to a free “backup” iPhone 7 with one new service line and an upgrading account, while online customers are looking at a maximum of $400 gratis e-vouchers.

On the bright side, if you choose to conduct business on the web, there’s no trade involved. Just buy and activate one iPhone 7 on a monthly installment plan, get the second free, plus your $400 gift card when both lines are new to AT&T. Finally, one new line and an upgrading Ma Bell subscriber will merely score the BOGO deal online, no extra freebies.

Interestingly enough, while the iPhone 7 is clearly advertised as the promo’s protagonist, the fine print also mentions the 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S7 Active, LG G5, and V20. Worth a try, don’t you think?
